Seagate Expansion 3TB USB 3.0 Desktop Hard Drive - $118.40 @ JB Hi-Fi ($112.48 @ OW)

1520

Here's a nice deal which will probably be better than any Boxing Day sales for HDDs. Seems like it's the normal price of $148 with an unadvertised 20% discount, bringing it down to $118.40.

Pricematch at Officeworks for an extra 5% off ($112.48), which should definitely make it the cheapest 3TB around today.

Merry Christmas all!

NOTE 29/12 - Officeworks have dropped their price to $118.40 as well, so no more 5% discount.

So…it can be used internalyl like say on a laptop, right?

  • Doncaster has heaps… price matched.. :) Kew East has ran out..

  • So is the general consensus that these can be opened without being obvious that they have been opened?

Ie. If it breaks, can I put it back in the enclosure and take it back to JB/Officeworks without them being able to tell I had previously removed it from the enclosure?

Also is the warranty 1 or 3 years - seems to be differing opinions on that…

    • Tried it yourself
      and help us out.

  • JB Hifi is doing 20% off on Seagate (today only) HDD. Just bought GoFlex 3TB for $151. I know this one is only $118, but I want to use one adapter for all my external HDDs. Therefore I have to stick with Seagate GoFlex.

    • I assume this is a CBD JB?

All the suburban JB's around postcode 2121 are shut today….

  • Got it price-matched + 5% less from OfficeWorks. This is great even if you rip the casing apart to get the bare drive.

  • Got one today from JB to use with another ST3000DM001 i have been using for over a year in a QNAP nas.

Pulled apart in 5min, used a old credit card to slide case open… no screws just internal clips.

Can confirm the drive inside is a ST3000DM001

Any clips break when you opened it with the credit card.
Can you provide a pic of how the cover clips together.
      Cheers

      • Nope none broke.. don't have a picture of it can get one for you if you need.. just slide card in between case gap and wiggle :)

        • -2

If you could grab a photo of it would be great, want to see the position of the clips and how they clip in before I attack mine.

I had one of the older style sloped front enclosures which I tried to gently open, managed to break every clip so any advantage I can get is for the best. :)

  • Bought last one at Glen Waverley OW; someone had bought out the entire of Nunawading OW's stock.

  • For some reason, the hard drive shows up as 349 GB when I installed it internally in my computer. Anyone else have this issue?

  • Last 2 have been bought from the NSW warehouse so anyone in NSW you better hope youre close enough to the Vic or QLD border to get it from there if ordering over the phone etc… Theyve been happy to pricematch n know the JB prices off heart pretty much by now haha..

If youre in QLD n ordering over the phone, hurry up too! I just ordered 2 from the Qld warehouse, leaving 8 in stock there…

    Otherwise, limited stock in stores.

    • I was referring to OW by the way ;)

Only one left on the shelf at OW Campbelltown NSW

Out of interest for people who have purchased this drive if you use something like CrystalDiskInfo and get
the serial number of the actual internal drive and do a warranty check on Seagates site what do you get?

I tried it with this new drive I got today and the Seagate site tells me the internal drive itself has 3 years warranty so
it makes it sound like if I rip the drive out of the external enclosure it is still covered by the warranty.

A previous older style 3TB Seagate Expansion external I purchased about 8 months ago tells me the internal drive is part of
a component and has no warranty. I have to put in the S/N and Part number of the Expansion enclosure to get warranty info.

In Australia we always have a warranty, despite what the manufacturer may say.

      • +2

Can't see that as being true in this case, if you tamper with the enclosure and remove the internals you void the warranty.
The warranty is for the enclosure/drive as a whole, both need to be in original condition to be accepted.

What your comment is alluding to has nothing to do with what my post was about anyway.

Usually with the Seagate External drives the physical hard disk inside the enclosure does not have any warranty information associated with its unique serial number and model. Sort of treated as an OEM drive.
The warranty is based on the external enclosures unique serial number and model with the internal hard disks serial being associated with that enclosure to stop hard disks being swapped out.
It also should stop people making warranty claims on the hard disk itself if they remove it from the enclosure and use it as an internal drive and later try to make a warranty claim on just on the hard disk.

What my previous post was pointing out was the physical internal hard drive inside the Expansion enclosure shows as having 3 years warranty when using Seagates online warranty checker. It shouldn't be showing that information for the internal drive, only if I do warranty check using the Expansion enclosure information.

Essentially I can remove the hard disk from the enclosure and use it as an internal hard disk on my PC and still be covered by the 3 year warranty as the physical disk is covered.

    • Same here one from a amazon enclosure says its a Component OEM drive.. this was purchase 12months ago :

      Component

The product you identified was sold as a system component. Please contact your place of purchase for service. Seagate sells many drives to direct OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) customers. These products are usually configured for the OEMs only, as components for their systems. You must contact your place of purchase for any warranty support on these drives.
If you purchased this unit directly from Seagate, please return to the previous page and verify your Seagate customer number, because the customer number you entered ( ) does not match our records.

The JB one i purchase yesterday says its from ingram micro and looks like it could pass warranty as a bare drive.. maybe..

      Expiration 19-Jan-2016

      In Warranty
Please contact INGRAM MICRO PTY LTD Alternatively you may request RMA directly to Seagate

Strangely enough, if you proceed to the 'Create Return' page on Seagate's warranty checker, my 2TB from Officeworks says:

Our records indicate that the product you have entered was sold inside a larger product. Are you sure you want to return just this piece, or did you want to return the entire product it came with? If you want to start over, please click on Check Warranty/Re-enter Products link. For more info, please click here.

The 'click here' link pops up a page showing the enclosure as the parent and the drive as the child. The text seems to pretty clearly imply you can return the bare drive, even though they know it's from inside an enclosure.

My Officeworks one is from Synnex rather than Ingram Micro so I'd be interested to see if the Ingram Micro distributed ones from JB are the same.

        • Well spotted.
          Didn't try that.

My 3TB Synnex drive shows exactly the same thing as yours so probably got my hopes up for nothing.
Seems strange Seagate go to the trouble of having the warranty checker set up to separate the
          enclosure and internal drive.

Will have do some reading on the warranty for these external enclosures and see what it has to say.

  • Great find, purchased one from Officeworks in Hawthorn (Melbourne), guy said they had plenty at the back even though there were none on the shelves, dodgy.

  • West Ryde had 20 in stock this morning - only 2 on display at any one time but plenty out the back…

Also the boxes say 3 year warranty…

Credit card trick can open the case, but you'll probably break several of the clips even if you are careful - especially the smaller ones. There are about 14 clips in total, all around the edges of where the 2 halves connect.

Don't use a credit card you want to keep coz it will most likely be destroyed in the process - bye bye Flybuys and Woolies Rewards….

When you mount the drives they may only appear to be 349gb RAW partitions, then another 1651gb and another 1000gb.

Delete the RAW partitions, then tell Windows 7 or 8 you want to convert them to a GPT disk and you'll be able to access the full 3tb…

Drives are SATA 3gb compared to SATA 6gb for the 4tb Hitachi's….

Bought 1. Thanks for the heads-up. I now have a total of 7TB (2x2TB+1x3TB) of unopened Seagate drives under my table :-)

    Any one open these?

Can you tell me if they can detect if it was opened?

  • wow talk about hard work. I went to JBHiFi where the staff / supervisor claimed that this receipt was 'OBVIOUSLY' a forgery and looked to 'neat' to be the real thing.

He had obviously received a company memo / warning and wanted to know where I got the receipt lol.

Headed off to officeworks and they said they could DEFINITELY price match it if I could show them the better price online OR supply a receipt that is within 48 hour time frame (ie: recent).

    :(

If anyone has a recent receipt would appreciated it
