Worth noting this is a modified sine wave inverter. Not recommended for sensitive equipment such as laptops. Probably be ok to boil the kettle though!

      maybe few light bulbs!
aren't most kettle above 1000w anyways?

    • Shouldn't it be alright seeing as your charging the battery of the laptop ?

I honestly don't know why they aren't recommended for laptops and such. I could do some research but hey… its New years day! Aparently they will run and charge fine, but may reduce the life of such equipment.

Laptop chargers use DC power anyway. You can get proper incar laptop chargers which can step the voltage up to whatever you need (Mine uses 19v as written on the power adaptor). Seems kinda pointless to go DC 12v —-> AC 240v —> DC 19v.

End of the day, if you're looking to just charge your laptop, maybe consider getting one of those units.

        • I was thinking more for emergency purposes when I'm away and need to charge camera batteries etc
But obviously if your constantly using it on 12v then a 12v adapter is the better option

i dont have this actual brand but the same type (mod sine wave) and used it when camping etc to charge laptops, cameras and fones with no problem. being they all have there own batteries i dont think it would make much (if any) difference

you probably wouldnt want to run a desktop or tv or something without a battery tho

    • Shouldn't it be alright seeing as your charging the battery of the laptop ?

      • What they said.

    • Switchmode equipment (laptops, phones, cameras) is fine to use. Motors and transformers may have some trouble with modified sine wave (and square wave).

      • Definitely should be okay. You might get a bit of an annoying whine from the transformer in the laptop psu though. I wouldn't trust anything expensive (fridge, TV, good computer) to a modified sine, but really for occassional use (or a crappy old carPC) it should be fine.

For a laptop I think you're better off chasing a decent universal dc-dc charger.

It might also be worth noting: the larger the inverter the more standbye power it will use. I.e. don't get a 300W inverter just to run a 25W bulb, as you're just wasting battery.

    Cool….
Now kids can play Wii U in the car

i used to regularly dumpster dive at the back of a DSE and every week there would be a couple of these inverters in there.

    useless POC

You've come a long way, used to dumpster dive, now Ozbargainer, congrats

      • +6

Isn't dumpster dive more advanced than OzBargain?

        • +4

          it's a right of passage.

        • +1

Dumpster diving is advanced ozbargaing. He's moved onto a 100% discount!

  • So… Would hooking this up to run an oxygen concentrator be a bad idea? Can someone explain why this is a POC? Is it about inconsistent power supply?

Had one of these for a while now and it's had an absolute flogging from my tribe and still doing well.
Just bought one as a backup unit. Thanks for the heads up!

    • What sort of things have you been using it for?

      • +8

        Powering Click Frenzy's server.

300W, from 12V does that mean you need at least a 25A fuse on the cigarette leghter?

    • Give it its own circuit. "supplied with alligator clamp leads for high power operation as well as a cigarette lighter lead for lower power use"

    • +1

      from the DS site

Full load current drain: approx 30A

so probably more like 35A fuse

^ and the cabling to match, please

After 27 comments, I still have absolutely no idea whether this product is useful to me or not.

    • I'll say not really. If it would be, you'd have known already.

    • I used a sander from the 12V plug in the boot, to get some rust off my trailer.
Only usage in 2 years for my 150W converter.
