  • Will it take better videos and photos than iPhone/Pixel?

    • +12

For a vlog? Yes. The 2 phones you mentioned compensate heavilly for the tiny optics by making up detail using alghorithms. While this one would have more of actual detailed reality in the picture.

But if you just had the idea "oh, vloggers use this instead of phone, so I will get cooler Insta/TikTok pictures" then I would avoid buying it. You will end up not using it because it is not that convenient and you might need filters and postprocessing on phone or PC anyway to get the usual Insta/TikTok fakery back in.

    • +1

For photos your phone will stack multiple images and denoise the result (to compensate for the undersized sensor)

You would want something like this particularly for video.

      • -1

Actually the phones stack images to produce HDR photos/video, and to achieve the same result with the Sony camera would require post-processing or even bracketing.

        • Also to denoise.

    • -1

In poor light probably. For most use cases no.

      • -1

        No. Lookup pixel binning.

    • Depends on the use case. Sony can shoot in HLOG/ SLOG/Cine4 etc raw (8bit) profiles which allows you to reproduce the colors your own way. i.e film look or a particular way you want all your videos to look if you are creating a niche content.
The newer version ZVE10 II can shoot in 10 bit raw (4:2:2) internally

  • +2

bought this from Sony on the weekend (via sony price pricematch, pretty easy process) and combo with amex deal.
and there is 30 days money back if you change your mind or use it price drops significantly.

    • How is it as a typical point and shoot camera?

      • +6

No viewfinder, keep that in mind

        • Newbie question… why does that matter if you can see through a screen?

          • @CaffeineCruiser: I have a ZV-E10 so I do have first-hand experience

The screen is on the smaller side and it can be hard to tell what's happening (if you're framed correctly, focus, exposure, etc.) if you're in a bright setting - whether that's studio lighting, outside, etc. The screen doesn't get very bright and it isn't matte, either. Using a viewfinder would eliminate this issue.

It isn't a major issue but it is worth noting.

            • @CrispyChrispy: it's 3 inch which is standard. just use the fully articulating flip screen and adjust the angle.

I had a Fuji X70 that had a lousy tilting screen. This is honestly fine.

          • @CaffeineCruiser: Better stabilisation, helps with difficult lightning conditions, or fast moving objects, otherwise just preference, really.

I don’t need it as I prefer my camera to be as compact as possible but there are others who think it’s a dealbraker.

          • @CaffeineCruiser: best example I can think of is difference between a rifle with a scope and using a shutgun. With a scope gives you focus and precision and speed. A shotgun is a scatter gun approach. Another example would be driving a car using the parking camera rather than looking out the front window.

They probably excluded it because of the "vlog" focus, e.g. not a camera to shot precision photos I guess. hard pass for me.

  • +1

How does it compare to Nikon Z30?

  • really tempted by this for something smaller and lighter for bike trips but i probably should just invest in a better compact lense for my A7cii

    • The 20mm 1.8G on the A7cii would be much better than this, and still reasonably compact

    • +1

      smaller

fuji xm5 with tt artisans 27mm 2.8mm has been fun for a small and light option , size/weight was the main thing holding me back with taking my a7iii out all the time, even when just using 55mm f1.8.

going back to a7iii when i can really highlights how trash fuji AF (at least in xm5) is though.

      • +2

AF on Fuji is highly dependent on the lens

Certain lenses are quicker than the others. I'm using the ancient X-Pro 2 and my LM lenses focus very nicely.

And certain lenses could benefit from newer bodies even, like the ancient 56mm F1.2R. so if you mount LM lenses on the XM5 it should focus real good.

Whats the cute little fluffy hat for

    • +9

Reduce wind noise on audio recordings.

    • -1

Keeps the viewfinder from getting cloudy in cold weather.

    • +1

      That’s a well-trimmed secondary characteristics of adult ‘man-camera’

    • +9

      Part of the queens guard.

      • +3

MAKE WAY FOR THE QUEEN'S CAMERA!

      • +1

lol - would be funny to take that on a trip to England to film them with the matching camera

PS - It's been the King's Guard for ~2.5 years now and for the foreseeable will remain so!

    • I thought it was a tribble !

    • Great to see these fluffy mic wind protectors on cameras/camcorders.
I had been hoping for something like this to appear since the 90s!

    • +4

Phones would need to be camera size to get that sensor

    • +1

Compact cameras seem to be making a comeback, especially ones with content creation features, since every idiot seems to want to pump out crap to put on the interwebs. Also, phones are a long way off getting the kind of optical zoom that can be obtained with telephoto lenses (ignoring the new concepts that just came out putting an m43 lens on a phone)

    • Depth of Field depends on sensor size (ie parallax), and you will not get proper DOF on a phone camera.

    • -2

Optical zoom, DOF, Sensor size…been there done that. I have 4 cameras sitting in my cupboard for over 5 years.

Its a free country, people want to be anal about have a camera, that's fine. What I am saying is all these advantages of a camera is now manipulatable by computational technique in smart phone and its doing a good job so far for everyday user and it is still getting better. Phone camera is whole system, camera, hardware and software… etc that works hand in hand handle imaging process and one day the system will surpass the optical + sensor system of entry level mirrorless camera. Trust me this day is not day away.

One more point carrying all that gear going oversea is such a pain, high end phone make casual travel photography a walk in the park. Don't think anyone can argue about that.

  • is it much better than osmo action 4 for video? well apart from the fact they I wouldn't go swimming with this Sony here

    • for livestream yet =))
for carry around like action 4. NOPE

    • +1

The stabilisation is not the greatest. If you're doing stuff with a lot of movement then I would get the action 4

      • +1

yes. I got the osmo action 4 and that RockSolid tech is wow. hardly even need a gimbal

but I guess lower light situations would be better on Sony. at least in theory, with a fast lens

  • +2

How is this for filming fitness content, particularly Pilates? My partner has been looking for a camera. I've suggested just getting a new iPhone however she's quite keen on having a dedicated camera seperate to her phone which I understand.

    • +1

I helped my mate select this camera for his Vlog and gym exercise videos. It is a very good camera and doesn't hunt for focus

      • So that influencer in my gym is your friend?

        • Haha hope your gym influencer is not affecting your workouts

  • Would this be suitable for shooting concerts? What's the zoom like on it?

    • +3

Focus length is in the title, and it entirely depends on how far you are away from the stage.

    • +4

Shooting concerts is a bit more than "get a decent camera and a decent lens". You need to know what you're looking for before you jump into buying a camera and a kit lens. For all the lights in a concert, they're still pretty dark. What ISO rating can the camera go to without getting too noisy? How fast is the lens? What length of lens do I need? A 16-50mm lens is pretty short unless you're right up in the band's faces.

  • Can anyone recommend a camera +lens under $1k for taking good indoor portrait pics of family and friends during day and evening?

    • +1

Get this and get Viltrox 33mm 1.4 ($400) or Viltrox 35mm 1.7 emount (for 260ish)

      • +2

Sigma 30mm/1.4 can be had for less than $300 used so that's another option

        • That's a good lens for sure!

    • You can get the TTartisan 27mm F2.8 for $180

  • DP Review emphasises that this is “not a stills camera” so probably look elsewhere if you prioritise photos over videos.

    • There's definitely better options if you're primarily taking photos and not videos, but this is one of the best out there in this price range if you're doing both

  • +1

Pretty reasonable price! Love my e10, it's perfect with the zv-e1. Works great with the Tarmon 28-200 full-frame lens and the Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 APS-C lens. Hope Canon releases the V1 soon for those who want a pocketable setup.

  • This or sony a6400?

    • They're basically the same. However, the A6400 has a body design more focused on photography, while the ZV-E10 is designed primarily for video and is lighter.

  • +1

I have this camera and it's surprisingly good. Yeah, it's better as a video camera rather than camera but still works very well as a camera too. I use it for a webcam mostly when not using it for going out and about. I've since bought the Sigma APS trio of lenses (16mm, 30mm, 55mm) which have really pushed the system to become a small quality kit. Also, I have by far the best Teams setup for WFH purposes. As my first foray into the the Sony ecosystem, as a Pentax main ecosystem user, this has been great - and has made me want to further work with Sony gear so now looking at the 7CII as my next camera.
