Time to stock up TCN restaurants!

    • The Coles deal for TCN Restaurant just ended yesterday, but this deal is better points wise.

Also, further stack with Amazon deal atm- buy Category Choice Groceries and use in Coles.

      • +1

Can you use Category Choice Groceries to buy gift cards at Coles and Woolworths?

        • +2

          Coles: that should be fine.

Woolworths: that should be fine, unless you purchasing some gift cards. I talked about this earlier today in a different deal.

Keep in mind there is always a chance a staff member from Coles or Woolworths will prevent you from purchasing a gift card if they notice you using a prepaid gift card as a payment method.

  • +1

The max denominations of TCN restaurants is $100 in Woolworths?

    • Yeah only $50 and $100 unfortunately at Woolworths unfortunately.

    • $100 was the largest I found last time they had 10% off

      • +3

And only 2 cards per day. I wish they have variable load.

        • yes and that ^

        • the 2 cards per day limit is really annoying

  • 10% off TCN Him (Redeemable at JB Hi-Fi) and Pub & Bar Gift Cards (in-Store Only) @ Coles - OzBargain is a better discount but it doesn't support fast food like TCN Restaurant does when converted to digital Mastercard/mobile wallet.

I say better because this is actually 9.x% discount (I can't remember the maths). Also 4% off gift cards for Woolworths are widely available (motoring organisations such as RACQ have it always).

    • -1

For someone like me, I would prefer 20x over 10% because of the higher redemption of Qantas flights which always gives a better discount than 9.x or 10%

      • Qantas points will devalue later this year.

        • Yup book before that

  • Does restaurant card work at coffee shops / cafe?

    • +6

It depends on a couple of factors.

      1. The MCC assigned to the coffee shop / café.

I would have thought that cafés are supposed to use MCC 5812 (Eating Places and Restaurants), but Mastercard's MCC manual says cafés are actually supposed to be classified as MCC 5814 (Fast Food Restaurants):

Merchants that sell prepared food and beverages for immediate consumption either on the premises or packaged for carry-out. Fast food restaurants may or may not operate a drive-up window for ordering and pick-up, and may or may not provide table service by a waiter or waitress. In any case, orders are paid for at the counter or at a drive-up window. Fast food restaurants include cafes, cafeterias, grills, coffee shops, diners, pizza parlors, sandwich bars or shops, deli shops, and snack shops. If table service is provided, a gratuity may be added to the bill. Such merchants generally do not sell alcoholic beverages.

Having said that, in reality, who knows how the café you go to has been classified. I have seen cafés use MCC 5812, MCC 5814 and MCC 5462 (Bakeries), and the reason I point this out is that out of these three MCCs, the only one officially permitted on the TCN Restaurant gift card is MCC 5812. (If you convert your physical TCN Restaurant gift card to the digital TCN Restaurant gift card, the digital gift card should actually work at MCC 5812, MCC 5814 and MCC 5462, although the last two MCCs are not officially supported1.)

      2. Whether the café chooses to accept TCN Restaurant gift cards as a payment method.

Assuming the café you go to uses a permitted MCC:

      • If you have the physical gift card, you can only use it at cafés that accept swipe (magstripe) payments from eftpos cards. Most EFTPOS terminals I have seen lately still have magstripe readers, but (for example) Zeller has a newer EFTPOS terminal that has no magstripe reader, and I have seen one recently at a café. Additionally, if the café uses Square EFTPOS terminals, those will not process swipe payments from eftpos cards, because Square chooses to not support this. Additionally, you cannot use the physical gift card for any payments through a website (e.g. ordering through a QR code at the table).

      • If you have the digital gift card, you can only use it at cafés that either accept payments from a mobile wallet or directly on a website. Keep in mind that some websites will reject the digital gift card, because they are unable to support 3-D Secure and are therefore a "less secure" payment method to accept as a merchant. You can get around this by using Apple Pay or Google Pay at the online checkout (where this is supported).

      1. When I say "officially supported", I am referring to the fact there have been previous reports that transactions using those MCCs work on the TCN Restaurant gift card, even though those MCCs are not listed as permitted MCCs in the gift card's terms and conditions.

How do you have the time and skill to write such clear, encyclopedic comments?

        • +1

Time to reveal my trade secret…

I recycled this comment and updated it to cater for TCN Restaurant gift cards instead.

The old comment obviously took a few minutes to write and format, but most of that time was spent taking the ideas from my head and trying to figure out how to turn it into something you can digest!

          • @WookieMonster: You my friend are a deity in my books!

You mention it should work at mcc5462 bakeries, have you tested at places like bakers delight or brumbies?

            • +1

@cloudy: I have not tested this myself, but:

              • This is the most recent comment I have seen here for the TCN Restaurant gift card working at MCC 5462. (I am not sure which bakery they were at.)

              • This person in 2023 essentially said they were able to use TCN Restaurant gift cards at Bakers Delight.

              • This person in 2022 said their transaction at Bakers Delight was reported as Bakeries.

LG G5 77" at JB, here I come!

    • How much is it?

Any reason you're not buying the TCN Gift cards which also support JB on this 10% off TCN Gift (Redeemable at JB Hi-Fi), Cinema and Active Gift Cards (In-Store Only) @ Coles deal now?

      • Because I went to two Coles tonight and these cards are nowhere to be found. The current 10% is for GIFT cards. I'm hoping the WW cards are easier to acquire due to people valuing pure discount more than EDR.

Option 1: Get $600 off the TV Purchase
        TV Price: $6,000
        Discount (10%): $600
        Final Price for TV: $5,400
In this case, you're saving $600 directly on the TV purchase.

Option 2: Convert Qantas Points to RTW Ticket
        Points Earned: 60,000 Qantas points
Value per point for RTW ticket: 6 cents per point
        Total Value of Points:
        60,000 points × 6 cents = $3,600
So, 60,000 Qantas points would be worth around $3,600 in terms of an RTW Business Class ticket.

        Comparison:
Option 1: $600 savings on the TV.
Option 2: $3,600 value from using Qantas points for an RTW Business Class ticket.

If you value Qantas points lower, 4 cents per mile, it is still $2,400.

      “In 7 days”

  • We'll never have variable mastercard promos again ey :(

  • Do these act like virtual credit cards when added to Google Wallet etc, like the Special cards do?

Are or they straight gift cards with the associated restrictions on buying other gift cards, for example?

    • +3

It depends on which gift card you are referring to.

      • TCN Gift/Active: the version in this deal is a physical prepaid eftpos gift card that can only be redeemed at the merchants listed on the TCN website (and the table in the deal description), and cannot be added to a mobile wallet.

      • TCN Restaurant: the version in this deal is a physical prepaid eftpos gift card that can be redeemed at selected merchant categories. If you exchange the physical version for the digital version, the digital version will be a prepaid Mastercard gift card that can only be redeemed at selected merchant categories and can be added to selected mobile wallets, so it behaves very similarly to Special gift cards in that respect.

      • Uber/Uber Eats: this can only be redeemed by adding it to an Uber/Uber Eats account.

      • +1

        Thanks for the clarification.

  • Nob question, can we do mixed payment, tcn and cc in uber app ?

    • +1

If you want to redeem a TCN Gift gift card on Uber / Uber Eats, you need to go to the TCN website first and exchange the TCN Gift gift card for a digital Uber / Uber Eats gift card that is emailed to you. You can then load the Uber / Uber Eats gift card onto your Uber / Uber Eats account.

When you make a transaction, Uber / Uber Eats will redeem your gift card balance first, and then any remaining amount owed will be charged to a payment method on your account (e.g. Visa, Mastercard, AMEX, PayPal).

      • +1

        Cool, thanks

  • If I buy TCN Restaurant $100 x2 and TCN Gift $100 x2 in one transaction under one Rewards Member on the same day, would I get 20x points for all 4 cards (2000 pts x 4) or just 2 of them (2000 pts x 2)?

    • +3

Unless something has changed lately with the Everyday Rewards system, you should get 20x points for all four gift cards in that scenario. If you are at a self checkout, I suggest you check the points counter after you go to the payment screen to make sure it says 8000.

      • Great idea, thanks for the info! Is there a limit on gift cards (either on quantity or amount spent) you can purchase through self checkout?

In the past at my local Woolies, I've been told by staff to go to a manned checkout if I'm purchasing more than 2 gift cards. So I haven't had much recent experience with self checkouts when it comes to purchasing gift cards.

        • +1

In terms of hard limits at self checkouts, the only one I know for certain is that you cannot purchase more than ten gift cards per transaction. I am not sure of the dollar limits (and the different approval thresholds associated with them).

The self checkout should sometimes trigger a threshold reached - approval required prompt, and I have triggered this when trying to load one gift card with $500, but I did not trigger this when purchasing a $100 gift card. In my experience, nearly all staff will press Yes for this prompt and let me continue with the purchase, but there was one time a staff member pressed No and said “the checkout is saying I am not allowed to approve this, you need to go to the service desk”.

I am not sure what makes the staff member think you cannot purchase more than two gift cards in a transaction at a self checkout… Maybe it is something to do with the extra approvals when purchasing over $1000 worth of gift cards (i.e. more than 2x $500 gift cards) and the fact that it can be easier to go to a standard checkout to get these approvals?

    • Still haven't received 20X bonus points yet from the last TCN Active cards, grabbed a couple.

Maybe that's because this deal hasn't started yet. It begins on Wednesday and is not yet active, hence why you haven't yet received points.

      • Um I thought the other deal was going already?

Otherwise seems like a dupe post. Not sure if you can return them but people have already been buying the cards..

        • +1

Yes, the deal you linked to is going. When you mentioned "TCN Active," I thought you were referring to this deal.

The deal you linked to is on Ultimate Active and Wellness Gift Cards, which look like this. This deal, which starts on Wednesday, is on TCN Active Gift Cards, which look like this.

If you've brought the Ultimate card, then you should receive points, but if you've brought the TCN version, then you won't receive any points as this deal isn't yet active.

  • Think I know the answer, but can you use your rewards dollars to purchase these?

    • +1

      No.

      • It is against the Everyday Rewards terms and conditions (section 17) to use Everyday Rewards Dollars to pay for any gift cards (unless the gift cards are sold on the Everyday Rewards Shop, and this deal is not available through the Everyday Rewards Shop).

      • At a Woolworths checkout, if you are only purchasing a gift card, scan an Everyday Rewards card and have balance available for redemption, the checkout will not give you the option to redeem Everyday Rewards Dollars. If you are purchasing a gift card with at least $10 worth of eligible items, you can redeem Everyday Rewards Dollars, but only to cover the cost of the eligible items.

      • +1

Thanks for the reply mate. Thought so, although seems unfair as it's our money.

        • No doubt everyone has thought of that, but yeah doesn't really make sense as you're not spending new money to accrue rewards.

it's like paying off a credit card with a credit card, haha.
