  • is this better than g75?

    • +1

g75 slightly faster, not by much though - this is likely a better deal

      Octa-core (4x2.4 GHz Cortex-A78 & 4x1.8 GHz Cortex-A55)
      Octa-core (2x2.3 GHz Cortex-A78 & 6x2.0 GHz Cortex-A55)

      https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=13372&idPhone…

Other specs look similar, except for the 85 having a better selfie camera.

      • +7

G85 is OLED, g75 is IPS

      • +3

The software support on g75 is also better, 4 years or major updates vs just 2 on g85?

        • This says 4 years of updates too in specs?

          • +1

@Dyl: G85 is 2 years OS updates and 4 years security updates.
G75 is 5 years of OS updates and 6 years security updates.

      • 4 x A78 is quite bit better than 2x A78 cores

    • +2

G85 doesn't have wifi charging. The G75 does.

      G85 has 128GB storage. The G75 has 256GB.

The G75 also comes with a set of wireless Moto Buds.

      • +15

        wifi charging

        Thats a new one

        • +4

Imagine Wifi charging was actually a thing!

          • +15

@Mr Frodo: It is! Hotels for example make you pay extra to use their wifi.

    • How much is g75 selling for?

      • It's weird that it says G85 has better RAM?

  • +5

G75 is definitely a better deal than this
    -Water resistent
    -Wireless charging
    -Faster processor

On the other hand this has an OLED screen if that is a must for you

  • just smashed my S21, would this be a comparable phone, or at least a slight upgrade?
or should i cop the G75? cheers!

  • Any details on the XMAR2025 code?

It is the coupon code Everyday Extra members use to claim their monthly 10% discount at BIG W, so it will not work after 31 March.

If you want to know more about the coupon code and its limitations, I suggest you look at the Everyday Extra webpage.

      • They don't check if you're a member??

        • +1

When you try to redeem the Everyday Extra monthly discount on the BIG W website, BIG W only checks whether you have an Everyday Rewards account linked to your BIG W account. The BIG W website does not check whether your Everyday Rewards account has an active Everyday Extra subscription.

On the other hand, you can only claim the Everyday Extra monthly discount in-store at BIG W if your Everyday Rewards account has an active Everyday Extra subscription. (That is the reason in-store is not mentioned in the deal title.)

    • I doubt it .

  • thanks, added another item to make it over $300 and then TRS !

    • +1

      Dafaq is TRS?

      • +1

Tax refund scheme, you get your 10% GST back when taking items out of the country, then can bring it back in if it's under $1,000. Basically 10% back for free if you travel international often.

Total invoice needs to be over $300, but they didn't actually check this last time I flew out of Melbourne (claimed a $60 mouse along with invoices over $300, was all via an online form and it didn't flag it as ineligible)

        • 60days window to claim..

          • +1

@averycarson: Yeah, only really applies if you travel quite often or happen to have a trip coming up

        • -1

Taking something out of this country as a Tax Free item and bringing it back sounds like a scam. You should be charged the tax back.

          • +1

            @Genghis: Hi Gerry

          • @Genghis: You can bring up to $1000 of goods in without paying tax, so below that threshhold it's allowed.

Over that thresh hold you're meant to pay GST again on anything over it

            • @Dyl: don't forget you can pool the $1,000 with family members travelling with you, and in these days the definition of family is not hard defined……..

              • @fl360:

A family includes a person and his or her de facto partner (including same-sex couples) and any of their children under 18 years of age; or a husband and wife, and any of their children.

                They define family.

                • @Dyl: so a male visitor from Malaysia can bring in his 4 wives and 9 children (legally married over there), and it is still one family….

          • +1

            @Genghis:

            sounds like a scam.

Please read the rules at TRS website. Nobody doing anything outside the laws here.

        • Oh that's super helpful, will it work for Australian citizens? I have a flight out of the country end of this month and my brother is asking me to buy this phone, will it work even if I don't bring back the phone?

          • @h11deo: Yes. I do this all the time. Claim trs on goods $300 and up.

          • +1

@h11deo: Yes, works for Australian citizens.

It's considered as if you're importing the good(s) from overseas, so the $1,000 $900 traveller exemption applies.

Travellers bringing goods back into Australia for which they have already claimed a TRS refund
You must declare any goods you bring back to Australia, for which a TRS claim was made by you or another person when the goods left Australia. You can do this by declaring the goods at question 3 on your incoming passenger card when you return to Australia.

Unless another concession applies, for example concessions on personal clothing (excluding furs), you may need to pay GST on goods you bring back into Australia. This happens when the value of those goods, combined with any other goods you import for which another concession doesn’t apply exceeds the passenger concession allowance.

Penalties may apply if you fail to declare these items.

            https://www.ato.gov.au/businesses-and-organisations/gst-exci…

Return to Australia with goods subject to the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) provisions
You must declare any goods you bring back to Australia, for which a TRS claim was made by you or another person when the goods left Australia.

On returning to Australia, you must declare the goods at Question 3 on your Incoming Passenger Card (IPC)
Penalties may apply if you fail to declare these items
If you bring goods back into Australia for which a GST refund via the TRS has been claimed, the goods must be declared, and if the value of those goods (combined with any other overseas/duty free purchases) exceeds the passenger concession allowance, any applicable GST and/or duty may need to be paid unless another concession (e.g. all personal clothing – except furs) is available.

            https://www.abf.gov.au/entering-and-leaving-australia/duty-f…

Official guidelines you have to declare when returning with TRS goods, but if it's under $900 of goods total being imported (ie TRS items + anything purchased overseas where no other exemption applies) there's no GST payable

            P.S.
The official legislation is worded s 533(1): knowingly producing a false or misleading document, including your Incoming Passenger Card (IPC) or Crew Declaration, and the question is worded Goods obtained overseas or purchased duty and/or tax free in Australia with a combined total price of more than $900; it doesn't mention TRS goods require declaration even if under $900.

In other words, it may not actually be misleading to tick 'no', unless they specifically ask you if you have TRS goods or it's over $900 total. Not legal advice, but I don't see the legislation allowing them to fine for ticking no if it's under $900.

          • @h11deo: It will. The idea is, when you take something outside Australia as a gift, you don't have to pay tax. So whatever tax you paid in Australia can be claimed back at the Airport.

        • +1

That is because the $300 minimum is on the total purchase from the same supplier (ABN based) - not on individual invoices/items.
This is automaticaly checked by the system so you cannot accidentaly get a refund you did not qualify for.
There is a zillion fraud checks build into the TRS system that most travellers are not aware of.

So if you think you are smarter than TRS and the ATO, think again and don't try anything silly.

You have to declare any items you claimed a refund when you bring them back on the Incoming Passenger Card.
You may be penalised if you don't and get caught (unlikely but possible).

What you are suggesting is what is classified as a Tourist Tax Rort. TRS is supposed to be only available for genuine tourists visiting Australia but the Australian implementation is open for everyone to abuse (Home Affairs Border Force is keeping a close eye to catch abusers & they do catch them).

How do I know? Insider knowledge.

          • @Ave Maria: Did you see my quotes above from both ATO and ABF? Both say you’re allowed to do it if you declare it under your $900 exemption when returning?

If you have insider knowledge that differs maybe they need to update their guidelines…

            • @Dyl: The item you bought for $900 before leaving Australia will be value less than $900 by the time you get back.

              • @timhn: Depreciation doesn't apply to the traveller exemption, goes by price paid.

There's another exemption if you're out of the country with it for I think 12 months, but that rarely applies

            • @Dyl: Many of these guidelines are set up for failure. Mismanagement of powers.

          • @Ave Maria: Thank you. At least someone else shares the same ethical mindset. There are so many abusers of this TRS Scheme. Let me tell you one story I heard few years back. Person X was travelling overseas and purchased a Rolex worth 10K in Australia before he leaves for his trip. He claims back the GST amount which is around $1000 at the airport. On his way back into the country, he was travelling with a friend. So he made the friend wear his new Rolex. He/His friend didn't declare anything on the incoming passenger card. He smuggled the watch simply into Australia without any doubt at the airport. He saved $1000 which should have been paid into the tax system in Au.

            • @Genghis: why make the friend wear it? couldn't she have just worn it herself?

            • @Genghis: we already pay income tax on what we earn, paying extra gst on things we purchase doesn't make sense anyway. we're being taxed after being taxed. and the manufacturer/service provider/importer is also being taxed. so we're being screwed three times over tax.

  • This or stay with G84? One major gripe with the G84 is the Bluetooth audio issue.

    • +1

I'd like to know how the cameras compare to G84. Two of my kids have those, and they are pretty happy with them otherwise, but the cameras seem a bit lacking.

      • Also curious

      • @CeraVe, @jakentta

        You can even do a comparison with Moto-G84 @ 'Cameras – Fluctuating quality'-> https://www.notebookcheck.net/Motorola-Moto-G85-smartphone-r…

Two of my kids have those, and they are pretty happy with them otherwise
Some people say G84/G85 camera is crap, but what they don't tell you is that they are comparing them with a $1K+ High-end phone, lol.

Some people say G84/G85 camera is great, & it's their 1st phone & happy snapping selfies all day.

        This one includes moto buds

For anyone who likes to put screen protectors on their phones and prefers those screen protectors to be made of glass, the screen on the G85 has curved edges.
There will be different types, ones that just cover the flat bit and ones that also cover the curved bits, but are harder to put on.

If you prefer the hydrogel foil kind, then it doesn't matter as much.

  • This or neo edge 50?

    • Neo50 is better. But also much more expensive

      • But Mediatek vs Snapdragon SOC.

        • That means nothing

What year do you think it is?

          • +2

@CrispyChrispy: Obviously there are more important things like size. I prefer Neo for being slightly smaller.

Snapdragon has a general benefit in reception / cellular coverage, GPS compared to other SOC. Better chance of custom firmware due to driver, kernel access.

Agree G85 processor is on the weaker side so a Dimensity with slightly worse 4G/5G signal would be overall a better option for most.

  • +4

Had one of these for about 4 months. Was using a Poco X3 and the g85 seems a serious downgrade even though it shouldn't be. It's slower, apps don't work straight away, bluetooth turns on by itself , brightness is all over the place. Face recognition is slow. There is also no headphone jack. It's very uncomfortable to hold.
Maybe I got a bad one but I would avoid them.

    • +2

No headphone jack? That's a deal-breaker for me.

      • +4

Only thing holding me back from purchasing the G85 or G75, the lack of headphone jack.

        • same. such a shame

    • Thanks will save my money and get Pixel…

    • Maybe I got a bad one

Most likely & didn't ask Motorola to send a replacement ?

  • Bought this for 399 minus a bit of cash back late last year, and 2 weeks ago i accidentally dropped it (from sofa to floor), and to my surprise the screen cracked, touch screen no longer responsive to touch, colour & brightness went haywire , & couldn't be adjusted anymore. Basically this phone is bricked now.
I got a couple other mid range phones and were accidentally dropped in the same manner, none of them sustained any damage and still working til today.

    • +1

Did you have a case on yours? Screen protector?

  • +1

Almost but not yet < $250, it will be soon.

  • -1

Not sure why this phone is so popular when the processor is as weak as a processor for a $300 phone 5 years ago.. It would be so laggy.
