I was on a search for a new kettle. which I wanted to be with temperature control and without any plastic parts where it comes in contact with water.
It could be a little tricky to find an electric kettle like that, as the internal top of the lid and level indicators are often plastic. It is a little hard to tell from the photos, but the internal part of the lid does look stainless to me. It looks like a decent quality one to me overall, I was not able to find anything of better value.
This one was $99 in the morning, but they have just reduced it to match Harvey Norman and other stores.

Update 2025/03/20: I have recieved the kettle today. Overall, I am very happy with it. It is quiet, quick to boil water, stainless steel everywhere apart from a little tongue that holds the lid in closed position which is plastic, but it is only a 5mm little tongue. The only little downside is how the lid operates, it is awkward to open it as one needs to press the button on the top down, which presses the lid in preventing it to open. Also, it only opens half way initially and you need to then pull it up.

      • Do people even bother writing a positive review?

      • Wow, amazing info.

How were you able to find all these. Is there a website that lists/groups reviews/links to reviews, or did you manually get each on yourself?

Temp settings 40,60,70,80,90,100° for those wondering.

I'm buying this as our current kettle is increments of 20° and the Minister of War and Finance complains that she can't make tea at 70°. First world problems.

    Thanks OP.

    • Yeah but now she can’t have 50°

I'd better not tell her that or she'll want to keep both kettles…

Is this 100% free of any plastic touching hot water? Any internal mechanism? The filter in the spout?

    • I think the spout is fine. But just as I say, a bit hard to see every little detail from photos and no youtube reviews.

    • 99.9%, temperature sensor at the bottom, but the 5000 model should be 100%

Xiaomi kettles are one of the best in the market.
I own one and bought a few for relatives, we love it.

  • +5

Maybe have a look at Xiaomi kettle pro 2. Around same price range with more functions. Stainless steel all on the inside and spout. AliExpress

    • It does look nicer by features. So, maybe Xiaomi kettle pro 2 is a better one.

    • 1800W is a bit slower than 2200W, but 2400W is going to be ideal for kettles

    • +1

The bottom has teflon coating. which i think is a great idea to prevent scales, plus the temperature is controlled so not to worry about over heating.

      • +2

u mean the xiaomi or the phillips?

Looks to be all stainless steel interior from the website, dont seem to mention any teflon
        https://www.mi.com/global/product/xiaomi-smart-kettle-2-pro/

        • I'm trying to figure out which one too as I don't want to buy one with Teflon coating.

      • Picture shows interior, looks stainless steel

      • Which kettle has the Teflon coating at the bottom? Is it the Philips one listed here or the AliExpress/Amazon ones? I need to buy one that has either stainless steel or glass.

    • +1

Thanks, just bought Xiaomi kettle pro 2

      • Where did u buy from?

        • +1

          Aliexpress

          • @noone: Do you have a link to it please? Is it all stainless steel? No Teflon coating?

Do the AliExpress ones have an AU plug, or do you have to buy an adapter?

            • @Ice009: I can't share aliexpress links as it comes up as affiliated but you can just search xiaomi kettle pro 2 and should come up with a few options and I just chose the cheapest one.

It's all 304L stainless steel and comes with plug which is upside down to Australian plug so you can plug it upside down at the socket. The writing on the kettle is also in Chinese

              • @noone: Hi, thanks for the reply. I just went to AliExpress and saw that you can choose to ship with EU, UK, AU adapter. Is that what you meant? I found one for $86 AUD (How much did you get yours for?) And like you said, I also saw in the user reviews there is no English instructions. Is it easy enough to figure out with the Chinese writing? I see it has a few buttons. Do you just adjust the temperature with the dial?

I kind of like the one that uses 316 stainless steel in the Amazon link. Not sure if that is a better kettle or not material wise. I wonder if there is much difference between 304L and 316 in regards to the type of water used. The Kettle Pro 2 looks really good, though, with the temperature adjustment.

Also, the interior of the one you bought is stainless steel? There's no coating inside. Another member above mentioned something about Teflon coating on the base, but he didn't specify what kettle he was talking about (if it's an Xiaomi or this Philips one he was referring to when he said that).

                • @Ice009: Yes I selected AU adapter and they provided me with an adapter, however you can plug it straight to the socket up side down too. I paid $75.81 delivered, not sure if there was some promo before.

The Chinese writing are just for the 2 buttons, the left one is keep warm and the right one is boil. You can turn the knob to select the required temperature you want to keep warm to.

I just checked my kettle again and looks like you're right, the bottom part looks like it's coated with Teflon (https://imgur.com/a/LgycqF4). You can also see from the photo that some pitting has already showing on the left side near the Teflon coating which is not good. I would say 316 would be more resistant to pitting so I might look into kettles with full 316L SS

Let me know if you have any questions regarding the kettle

                  • @noone: Thanks for the reply. I won't be able to buy it if it's got Telfon in it then, darn. I wonder why they put that in there? For durability against tap water?

Also, thanks for the photo. I appreciate it. I guess back to the drawing board. I wonder if Xiaomi make any that don't have the coating on the bottom?

What usually causes pitting? Is that an indicator of not so good quality SS, or would that vary depending on water quality used in it?

    • Wait is the voltage difference going to be an issue when buying kettles from China?

      • Seems like ok from buyers from Australia from reviews

Curse my missus for insisting we get a Smeg with no temp control or other features for $195.

    • +11

If it didn’t have the Smeg brand smacked on it, your wife probably wouldn’t have bought it.

      • +2

        100% correct.

      • +2

It's funny. Smeg means different things to different people. If you're a Red Dwarf fan, it probably won't induce you to buy.

    • Funny that, we had Smeg as a present about 6 months ago but it is a bit useless without temp control so gathering dust on a shelf at the moment…

  • russel hobbs have a similar temp controlled one, occasionally on sale for $50-60. it's great.

    • +2

Lots of plastic in it, I had one like that. Also, hard to see temperature writings on the buttons.

  • I have the 5000 model I bought for $40 (no temp control). https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/890648

The lid doesn't open properly. It will get stuck every 2nd opening attempt to fill it up. You will need to modify the notch the lid lever slides in. You will know what I mean when you inspect the mechanism.

    • I didn’t realise the lid opens all the way until the next day lol

It does bother me that the open button needs a second hand to push, otherwise a decent unit for the price.

      • Opening the lid is like a mario double jump timing attempt. Do it too slow and the lid will get stuck, too fast and the lid will get stuck again.

    • I bought the same model and quickly realized the lid only opening halfway is a safety feature.. Opening it all the way to refill after it's just boiled can allow scolding condensed water to run off the inside of the lid and over your hand holding the kettle.

Our shiddy kettle broke a few months ago, we've just been boiling water in a stainless steel pan on the hob.
Hardly really make tea, and we have a coffee machine we use almost daily

    • +4

cool story what does this have to do with the offer

      • +1

        Kettle

        • I'll allow it

    • I tried that for a few days, and it just so happens I needed to fill a hot water bottle. Kettles are pretty essential. Need to get one for the car then I’m all set :)

    • +2

Ha. Same. I got the whistling stove top kettle and got used to it now. Bonus, no plastic.

      • I've been thinking of trying one of these. How many minutes does it usually take to boil on the stovetop (I have a ceramic stovetop)? Any particular model/kettle you bought?
The no plastic is the main reason I'm interested in getting one.

      • Hi, just wondering if you happened to see my reply to your post? Curious how long those stove top kettles take to boil on average and what one you ended up buying, and also how it's holding up durability wise.

  • +1

I have this kettle for a while so here's a quick review.
Pro: temperature control, double walled, internal stainless steel, large capacity 1.7L, min to boil is 1 cup
Cons: lid is stupid. Doesn't open all the way with one click, have to push it with your hand on top of the hot steam. It boils to set temperature only, not to 100C then cool down so no good if you want to make baby formula.

    • +1

Isn't that the point of the temperature control, to heat the water to the selected temperature (eg. 70, 80, 90 etc).
Otherwise wouldn't you just boil it normally, and then let it cool off?

      • +1

My previous kettle was a Xiaomi. Via Bluetooth you can also set it to boil to 100C and cool down then keep at 40 C for 24h to make baby formula.

        • +2

That sounds like a huge waste of power?

          • +4

@caitsith01: No argument there. Having a baby is a huge sinkhole of energy.

        • Why do you need to keep it @ 40°C for 24hrs? Just up to 100, then cool and use?

          • @Lord Ra: Because the body temperature is 37 C. You want luke warm water to make formula. 40C is the lowest on these kettles.

            • @supperman: It's not the 40C part, it's the keeping it there for 24 hours part that is weird.

              • @caitsith01: Baby feed is around the clock. You don't want to reboil and wait for it too cool down every few hours, especially midnight. That's why the 24h timer is useful. Again, my specific comment is towards potential buyers who are after a kettle to make baby formula. It may not make sense for general use.

                • @supperman: I've got kids. Much simpler solution than leaving your kettle heating 24/7 is one of those specialised bottle warmers. They literally get a bottle to the right temp in a minute or two on demand and take up no space.

                  • @caitsith01: I got one of those warmers. They heat up too much too fast so you will have to hang around to check for the correct temp inside the bottle. Not a fun thing to do at 3 AM in the morning. The kettle only needs to keep temp at 40C. Small price to pay if convenience matters to you.

                    • -1

@supperman: It's more that we're in an environmental crisis and sitting around running your kettle 24 hours a day for 'convenience' shows how wildly out of touch with it people are. But anyway.

                      • @caitsith01: I’m glad your little bottle warmer works for you. Your solution may not work for others. I’m simply stating the boil then cool feature is not available with this kettle. The function itself consumes less than 1 kWh a day.
If you’re so concerned about environmental impact, maybe reduce your own foot prints instead of projecting your own personal opinions on other people’s life. I have EV, solar, and home battery setup to self sustain but I’m not going around forcing everyone to do the same. Let’s wrap up this discussion here.

                        • @supperman: I like the sounds of how you're doing it. Seems a lot more convenient if you have a kid. What model Kettle is it that you have?

      • +1

The purpose to boil to 100C isn't just because to get it to the desired drinking temperature but to disinfect. Therefore, there is benefits to first boil the water to 100C then let it cool down and keep at the desired temperature rather than just heat it to the desired temperature without boiling first.

While lower temperatures can kill some bacteria, boiling water to 100°C (212°F) ensures a more thorough and reliable disinfection, killing a wider range of pathogens, including viruses and parasites, that may be present in water, making it a safer and more effective method for water purification.

        • 100%. Newborn immunity is next to nothing that's why this feature is important.

          • @supperman: Personally, not just for newborn, but you never know how old/clean/dirty your water pipes are. In my house, we filter and boil all water before drinking.

            • @muddrex: ummm after a while a baby starts to develop thier immunity…. unless you filter and boil thier water and keep them wrapped in cottonwool.

You seriously filter and boil all water before drinking it?
Do you drink processed drinks or eat in restaurants?

              • +1

@SlickMick: At home, where I can control, we filter (using Brita) and boil all drinking water.

    • that lid is designed to open half way with a click, to prevent the hot steam releases to the face.

      • +1

Except that there is no other click to open it fully. My previous Xiaomi kettle has two stop clicks. One to open halfway and press again to fully open.

        • Which model/s do you recommend in the Xiaomi range, and do they come with AU plugs or are adapters needed?

          • @Ice009: Mine was the Viomi Smart Kettle V-SK152B with AU plug but it was no longer on sale.

  • Dispatch times shows longer in amazon

  • +1

Just need a simple kettle with basic function but no plastic interior , any recommendation?

    • +1

According to this thread you couldn't possibly live with a kettle that doesn't have the function of checks notes not actually boiling water.

  • Ended up getting it for $67.15 from The Good Guys as I got an exclusive Afterpay day voucher for 15% off some items… was going to create a post but it is said to be a unique voucher code. Also had some discounted TCN Him cards to use so that worked out well. No local stock though so had to pay $6 for delivery which negated some of the benefit.

  • Bought it, returning it. It stop boiling intermittently.

    • Unlucky! Mine is working perfectly.

      • How do you find it? Beside the faulty boiling for me, I find the lid release button is poorly designed. The lid release button cannot be quickly tap to open the lid, I need to gently press hold for 1 second then slowly release my finger to open the lid.

It looks food visually is the only positive things I can say.

Going to try the XiaoMi as other have suggested

        • Apart from the lid it is great!

  • Any recommendation kettle which can be controlled by alexa/google home?
