The Ryzen variant of this NAS Mini PC has been extremely popular and now the Intel variant is on sale for a really good price. Many people prefer using Intel over AMD due to Quick Sync and better support for Plex transcoding.

It's important to note that due to this having an Intel N150 4 core, 4 thread CPU it only has a single DDR4 SODIMM slot (2 in Ryzen) and a single full sized M.2 NVMe x1 SSD slot (2 in Ryzen). However you can convert the M.2 WiFi slot into an SSD slot using an M.2 key to M.2 NVMe adapter (should be included). Besides these changes pretty much everything else remains the same.

Other features include 4x 2.5"/3.5" SATA bays (not hot swappable), two 2.5G LAN ports, HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort, full feature USB-C port including video out, 2x USB 3.2, 2x USB 2.0, DP, HDMI, USB-C, MicroSD card slot, 3.5mm audio jack and the DC port. On the rear there is a large 120mm fan (4 pin, replaceable) to keep the system cool.

While barebones it still comes with Windows 11 Pro and you can install any other OS like Proxmox, XPEnology and more. Since this is using an ASMedia ASM1064 controller for drives, TrueNAS isn't recommend due to compatibility issues.

Tips and tricks:

The WiFi slot can be used as an M.2 NVMe x1 SSD slot and Aoostar may bundle a 2230/2242 sized SSD adapter to convert this. If they don't you can pick up adapters like this cheap or with a bit of effort fit a normal sized 2880 SSD.

Fan settings can be found in the fairly unrestricted BIOS under "/advanced/hardware monitor/system fan". Since it uses a 4pin connector you can swap it out for another. Fan modes:

  • Fan off (0x70) = 30
  • Fan start (0x71) = 35
  • Full speed (0x72) = 80

For those paying in USD this is how you get the correct exchange rate in PayPal:

Setting overseas websites to AUD or letting PayPal do the currency conversion results in an inflated rate. To get the correct rate you need a card without international fees and do the following:

  • Set the website currency to USD
  • Checkout with PayPal
  • Select your card with no international fees
  • Click "See currency options"
  • Select USD to bill the card in USD instead of AUD
  • Proceed with checkout

Now you'll get the correct MasterCard or VISA exchange rate depending on the card.

    N150 is a beast for it’s class/size

I made my own NAS (admittedly it is an 8 bay case) with an Intel N5095 CPU (slower than the N100), 16GB RAM and only 1Gb NIC and it cost me around $600 - so this isn't a bad price for an all in one. I installed Synology DSM 7 (google 'auxxilium') and have Jellyfin video streamer running in a docker (free version supports hardware transcoding).. works really well.

      • Can you get quickconnect/ mobile apps working on that, mate? I assume not?

        • Yep i want to know as well:
          A. If all syno android apps work as if we are using original syno nas,
          B. If i can reinsert my hdds from my current synolgy to this aoostar and it can be read (after installing auxilium) or i have to get new hdds and rebuild everything from scratch

        • 2FA doesn't work (but I don't care because my xpenology can't speak to interwebs)

        • yes you quickconnect register it with synology, but I figured why advertise myself to them, it's just asking for a ban (or a visit). I do plan on setting up tailscale vpn on the NAS and also will run immach or similar photo handler in docker.

        • setting up quick connect with an emulated synology NAS - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gC102SqxQ1Q

Jellyfin only has a free version.

        It's FOSS, that's kinda it's whole thing.

        • lots of people haven't heard of jellyfin and most of them are interested in the transcoding ability of Plex - so just pointing out it's free with Jellyfin.

          • +1

@gizmomelb: Free version makes it sound like JellyFin has free and paid options and is more likely to put people off.

            • @NobalaKoba: not any more than plex free and paid would put people off knowing they cannot test transcoding without purchasing it (and pretty soon won't be able to remote view stuff either).

      • Good job. I used Jonsbo N3 + N150 board.

        • I have a Jonsbo N3 as well, it's a damn nice case.

      • +1

have Jellyfin video streamer running in a docker (free version supports hardware transcoding)

wot ? Jellyfin is FOSS, or do you mean Plex ?

        • +1

Jellyfin is FOSS, Plex is closed source with a free-tier.
5 years ago I would have said to use Plex, now… consider Jellyfin as it's less restrictive, people you share your library get all features (unlike plex-pass).

It's come along way and has some advantages and ease to setup.
Namely, when Plex's auth servers tank once every year or so… you can still use the media that's right next to you.

          • @Commodore64: yup.. is why I went Jellyfin - I wanted access to my media on my terms, not having to log in through someone's server where they could potentially keep track of my data. Plus I've helped family and friends install the android and ios jellyfin client apps on their tvs and devices, though I have one friend with a Samsung TV where he has to use the tv's web browser to connect as he cannot get the app to run for him at all on his tv. Movies, tv series, music and comics are available, I use it daily at work during my break.

            • @gizmomelb: i just tried jelly today.
but it doesnt find (metadata) as much as plex. do you know the equivalent of "fixed match" on plex, where can i get this on jellyfin ?
also i tested with a folder with documentaries movies, and with jellyfin i choose mixed sources movie and show (well, because the documentaries sometiems just single episode sometimes a series). maybe this is the issue?

              • @McMaferMur: You might need to configure it, for me it works even with foreign tv shows and anime

              • @McMaferMur: I've only ever used separate folders for movies, tv, music and books and set the content type for each folder as appropriate in jellyfin. Each movie/album/tv season has all the files in it's own folder and I've never had any meta data not be found.

The worst I've had is I think a couple of albums not matched with their artists (seem it thinks 'Black' (song: Wonderful Life) was by Black Sabbath) and one movie which it kept matching to an asian movie of the same name (the metadata can be hardcoded for each entry if you really want to / the automatic metadata isn't correct).

I had to google 'fixed' match on plex - with jellyfin if you hover over the metadata tile, it will have three vertical dots in the bottom right corner, click that and you'll have a menu pop open where you can play, download, delete media etc. but the very bottom options relate to metadata management (if you don't want to use the built in metadata library manager) - select 'identify' and a window will open with all of the closest matches that jellyfin can find from the metadata sources that you enabled in configuration.

In the Jellyfin Dashboard, go to Plugins section and I'd recommend enabling the following plugins, if they aren't already: TMDB box sets, The TVDB, OMDB.

Then in Dashboard, Libraries, Manage Libraries, make sure the metadata scrapers are ticked/enabled and arranged in an order from most to least that you want.

You can then re-scan individual libraries or do a global library scan to update / replace existing metadata.

Super fast delivery via DHL Express. I ordered my Ryzen one beginning of this week and installing it now (arrived this morning) :)

    • Woah

    • This one is shipping from China Box store instead of Aoostar Store. It may not be DHL.

      • Aoostar Store said for the Ryzens they were waiting for more stock that will ship next week :( They said I got second last one

You're lucky. I still haven't picked one up yet and nearly caved in.

  • Any known compatibility issues with unraid?

    • -1

      Id like to know this

      • if unraid is linux see my comment below about kernel version.

  • Thx op, now looking for NAS hdd deal

  • I heard that plex are going to double their fee and put remote streaming behind the paywall.

    • +3

      Use Jellyfin :)

    • If you already have plex pass youre fine

      • I don’t.

I read and read and try to work out if I’m putting money down how to best arrange my stuff so that when I’m passing a fat 4K file with dts it doesn’t fall awfully out of sync because I have a b7 and a soundbar so the arc isn’t an e-arc and it’s running through infuse and all the other stuff to take into account so the talkie noises look like they come out when people’s lips move.

This used to be so easy.

        • all my media has DTS-HD, Atmos, Commentary tracks and subtitles as well. I haven't had a single person say they've had audio or subtitle sync issues when they've watched anything using the jellyfin client apps on smart tvs (android and ios). I do notice when I've checked who's on my server that sometimes the DTS-HD is being transcoded in real-time to support their tv audio.

For my home setup I have an intel n100 mini PC running LibreElec off USB, so it boot's direct into KODI. KODI is running the Plex plugin, so that all the metadata etc. is synced from my NAS (running Jellyfin in a docker) and is connected to the HDMI1 input on my soundbar. The soundbar is connected via E-ARC to the TV and plays back 4K video, all audio formats with no issues. I don't use the Jellyfin client on the tv since I also use the mini PC for retro gaming and ehh just habitual I guess (the TV isn't connected to my network at all since the LG adverts pissed me off - I will eventually set up a block for it on my opnsense firewall).

  • Whats the trick with aliexpress, haven't used them before signed up and none of these codes work. Tried a different browser same deal, is there like a well known thing im doing wrong here?

    • +3

Unfortunately coupons won't work for new accounts that haven't made an order before. The welcome deal discount can give you low prices on many products for your first order.

      • that's different never come across that kind of restriction before but clears it up. Thank you :)

PSA: Anyone installing Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, note that the 6.8 kernel will not discover the /dev/dri/render device… meaning no acceleration.
I'm currently checking 24.10 non-lts and it appears that the 6.11 kernel does show /dev/dri/renderD12, meaning you should be good to go!

    • I’m assuming this would also be the case for TrueNAS Scale?

      • +1

TrueNAS runs on FreeBSD right? So no, but whether Alder Lake DRI it’s supported or not I can’t say

        • Scale is linux (Debian) based, Core is FreeBSD.

  • What are people's recommendations for a SOHO/Business NAS. SOHO/Business because I have my business office at Home. 80% Business use, 20% personal use to store backups of phones/photos.

Will primarily be used to work live on the files stored on the NAS, accessed by 2 windows PCs. Files are anywhere from 50MB to 500MB. CAD Files 99% of the time.

Speed and reliability are the most important aspects. As of now I use very little plex, which I the Google TV picks up from my desktop.

Need something cost effective too, not over the top and without nu-necessary faffing around. None of us are IT people. I've built PCs and handle the current network but I wouldn't know what to do with Networking.

Leaning towards Terramaster F2-212 purely for the cost factor.
Ideally want to spent ~$500 for the whole setup (including drives)

    TIA

    • +2

Get something with a NAS OS installed then. This is really sort of an enthusiast's device.

      • Thanks, any recommendations?
2 bay should suffice, I think

        • +2

My opinion is don't stuff around with anything too underpowered. They are OK for backups through the night but processing and unpacking large files can be slow and would annoy you over time. F2-424 is a 2bay but has an Intel which would be OK.

          • @buffalo bill: Thanks, any recommendation for something budget friendly?

            • +3

@alterego13: Busineess and budget, pick one.
Get synology or build own of you capable

              • +2

@McMaferMur: True words. It shouldn't be the aim to cheap-out on business file storage - that's how you lose years' worth of client data. If on a budget, just use OneDrive or a SharePoint setup. Under $500 won't get you a reliable solution with parity.

              • -1

@McMaferMur: I appreciate what you're saying but Businesses also have budgets, especially solo ones. I'm only asking if there's anything that's less $$$ than what was recommended.
                Thanks again.

              • +1

                @McMaferMur:

Get synology or build own of you capable

But don't get a budget Synology.

Bought a QNAP 2-bay NAS with dual-core ARM + 2GB RAM 2 years ago to replace an aging HP Microserver. With all the bloated NAS software that thing is slow af, and equivalent Synology is even worse. By the time you spec up a Synology or QNAP with more RAM and faster processor, you might as well buy a prebuild box from AliExpress like this one here.

                • @scotty:

But don't get a budget Synology

                  :(

Exactly right… The configuration of the deal here seems very good… But with limited knowledge about setting up a NAS, I would either have to invest time in learning or $$ for Synology/Qnap's software or $$ for someone to set this one up for me…

                  • +2

@alterego13: See, you cant win here. Either get top synology or pre built. I understand budget but we are not talking $5k here, a business should be able to afford synology, claim as expenses and you can devote your time to expand your business instead saving $500 and spend hours tinkering how to install the os.

if you still think synoloy is expensive. here some insight:
i have 1511+ model, from 2011, and running until now without issue. so you can imagine the cost per day.
and yes in 2011 mine is the top model (hint: + on the back of the model number)

        • +1

One of the Western digital my cloud series? Plug the box in and away we go, don’t have to know anything. Not as cheap as this though.

Or similar Synology or QNAP for a more fulsome NAS option.

  • So TrueNas will not run properly on it? I was considering running that. If not, can I know some equivalent good OS?

  • -1

    Sorry, general question about aliexpress:

If I am a new aliexpress customer and I buy two items at the same time in one same transaction, will both items track at the new customer rate at cashback sites? e.g. 28% at Shopback

  • Anyone know a good nas os for automatic photo video backup from phone

    • +2

Not a NAS OS itself, but Immich and Photoprism (when used with PhotoSync) can be set to upload photos “automatically”.

The issue is that the automatically part is only fully true on Android - it’s a bit unreliable on iOS due to the way the memory management and permissions work.

PhotoSync seems to be anecdotally more reliable than Immich in my experience.

Both of those photo solutions exist on Unraid, TrueNAS Scale, Casaos and Zimaos. I found the TrueNAS version to be slightly easier to wrap my head around once I figured out user permissions.

I seem to be in the minority in finding TrueNAS Scale easier to understand than Unraid

      • Thanks. I hate having to spend hours and hours learning then setting up.
Do you think truenas pretty straight forward?

Can you run this just through windows?

  • Great post OP. Informative and CLEAR

  • First time thinking about getting a dedicated plex server with some torrenting and archiving software - just simple backup software that can create duplicates on 2 hdd per backup set, will 16gig of ram be enough? Must be able to playing large UHD remux and 4k mkv via direct play, no remote streaming and minimal transcoding. Also can anyone comment on the noise - is it ok to be in the same room as your watching?

    • +1

      Yep 16 would be plenty.
Dont worry about noise people just too sensitive once you have something else in the room it will be okay. If you put next to baby bed then yeah no.
Its hdd and fan. How noisy they can be. Less than Lamborghini for sure

  • It's important to note that

    However

If we keep cp/pasting these AI phrases straight out of ChatGPT, it'll create a feedback loop. Future models will slurp this up during training and produce even more predictable phrases.

Maybe create a regex to replace some of the slop?

    • +1

My AliExpress posts are training up DeepSeek.

  • These would be so much better than a synology for the price

    • and you can install synology dsm on them too.

      • i used to insall custom firmwares on phones, so with installing unofficial o/s on NAS (with important data), i am worry one day it will just crash and burn and all are gone.
but probably wont happen after years of stable release of this auxxxilium

        • +3

You could really benefit from using AI for a lot of your questions. If your NAS is backed up you're all good.

        • +1

at worst buy a real synology and move the drives over.. they will be detected and work, assuming the drives / entire DSM hasn't been cactused. Some history, I've been running the earlier xpeneology for around 11 years (DSM 5 NAS is still in service, the two DSM 6 NAS have been retired with all their data to the DSM NAS running under auxxxilium).

        • +2

i am worry one day it will just crash and burn and all are gone.

Then you just restore your backup, no big deal.
