What Is Your Favourite Orange Juice?

I used to juice my own but then I figured its cheaper to let a specialist do it.

I've found a large variation in sweetness, sourness and bitterness across the different brands. Also, some brands suffer from inconsistencies in their fruit and thus some batches taste different. I find the Impressed brand pretty good so I'm buying that at the moment.

I love orange juice and drink a litre per day. Pulp-free all the way.

Coles Finest 2L Orange Juice (with pulp) for $6.

    https://www.coles.com.au/product/coles-finest-orange-juice-2…

The only OJ that tastes better is Innocent from UK. Not even Tropicana tops that.

    • Ahhh 20% Inflation… That used to $5 not a few months ago.

      • Yes, it was $5 for years, then went up to $5.5, then quickly to $6.

I thought this was funny until I realised you were serious. Politicians rarely achieve intended outcomes from their own efforts.

    • Came in to say the same thing, it reminds me of juicing oranges by hand as a kid

    • Orange juice loses all its goodness very quickly

So whilst bottled orange juice may taste OK its not as good as juicing your own or buying freshly squeezed juice at a shop

  • +1

Grove juice with pulp, I have a feeling it may come from the same factory that does the Coles finest juice. Same shape bottle (until like a year ago when it changed shape) and they taste almost identical.

We used to drink heaps of 'no added sugar' OJ until we worked out that the 'no added sugar' version contains heaps of naturally occurring sugar (fructose) and at the volumes were drinking, we were over indulging

Aldi's one. It's one of the very few that's not reconstituted.

    • There's plenty of not reconstituted options, you have to get it from the fridge section. I too enjoy Aldi one though

I love the Aldi OJ with Pulp, and prefer it over the Coles Finest one.
And 50 cents cheaper for 2L.

      • I agree. With pulp tastes more natural than without. There was one bottle had recently that had a syrup consistency which must have been a bad batch but overall like this brand.

        • With pulp tastes more natural than without.

The pulp is there, for the body to absorb the fibre from the fruit
(and obviously, extracts the sugar content from it )

    • I like the Aldi one too:

2-litre Pick'd with Pulp (which is currently at about $5.29 , but was about $4.50+ just over a year ago)

Anything that on sale half price or more

Nudie, nothing but oranges, or so they say

  • +15

Nudie when I have it, which is rare. Don’t let the fact that it is fruit fool you into thinking it’s good for you to be drinking 1lt per day.

  • depends on where i shop but generally speaking the 3L Coles brand does the job

    • +3

That is reconstituted, may as well drink cordial. Powdered dried orange mixed in water. You should try fresh juice it is a lot better in taste and benefit

      • Correct the home.brands usually not good…

        • -2

Not great, but still like juice not cordial. Boioioioi is very wide of the facts.

          • +2

@bargaino: How so? Its reconstituted. I am not talking about the Coles fresh juice. The 3L does not come in fresh as far as I know.

            • -1

@Boioioioi: Water out, water in. 70% of the world's orange juice production is frozen concentrate.

Oh wait - you are talking about the "fruit based drink" in 3l bottles. That never claims to be OJ. Coles reconstituted juice is in the 2l bottles. yes, a big difference!

The commercial branded OJ in plastic bottles in the supermarkets is pasteurized - might as well be reconstituted. The real difference if any is the oranges used. And none of them are at all the same as the "fruit drinks" let alone cordial.

              • @bargaino:

The real difference if any is the oranges used.

Whether its reconstituted from a concentrate or made from real oranges makes no difference. The real issue is that all supermarket juices are pasteurised. Its a legal requirement in same way as milk is pasteurised.

Try this experiment at home. Juice a glass of OJ from real oranges. Take a sip and taste it. Now pasteurise it by bringing it to the boil and cooling it. Now taste it. All the natural flavours, enzymes, vitamins have been destroyed. What you are left with is a tasteless, nutrientless coloured sugary drink. All manfactures fortify the product with artificial vitamin C, add flavours and possibly colouring/preservatives. Bang, thats your orange juice. Enjoy.

                  @bigticket:

The real issue is that all supermarket juices are pasteurised

                  agreed but

Now pasteurise it by bringing it to the boil and cooling it.

Misleading. Your milk is already pasteurised (for good reason). Try boiling that and see if it tastes the same!

All manfactures fortify the product with artificial vitamin C, add flavours

All? This is false. Fortification (not at all a bad thing) is only needed for reconstituted juice.

First, lets be honest: OJ is not very nutritious to begin with, even fresh. If you need that vitamin-C, you must have a very poor diet.

                  AI says:

"If you’re comparing store-bought pasteurized juice to fresh, the bigger nutrient gap might come from storage time and exposure to light or air after pasteurization, rather than the process itself. For example, vitamin C continues to degrade over weeks on the shelf. So, fresh-squeezed wins for maximum nutrients, but pasteurized is still a solid option, especially for safety and convenience."

OJ is an unhealthy luxury food, a party food like chips & coke.

But I do like to buy the big bags of oranges when cheap and in season, to freshly juice as part of a decadent Sunday brunch.

                  • @bargaino:

Misleading. Your milk is already pasteurised (for good reason). Try boiling that and see if it tastes the same!

Yes and No. In my example, specifically juice, boiling (~100 degC) is over pasteurisation whereas commercial pasteurisation occurs at lower temps, 60-70 degC, over relatively short periods of time. Nevertheless, pasteurisation devoids the product of vit C and flavour and these are added during processing to make a saleable product.

All? This is false. Fortification (not at all a bad thing) is only needed for reconstituted juice.

Yes all! Why? As already noted, factually, pasteurisation kills vit C and flavours whether its reconstituted or freshly squeezed.
Can you cite a supermarket juice without added vit C and flavours?

    as per last week:

    1. Grove
    2. Nudie
    3. Juice Brothers
    4. Impressed

some brands suffer from inconsistencies in their fruit and thus some batches taste different.

All brands, unless they are loading their "juice" with chemicals to get a consistent taste.
What do you expect from a natural product?

But natural does not mean healthy. It is hilarious that they scream "no added sugar", when it has almost as much sugar as Coca Cola.

Buy fruit, not processed juice. I prefer low-sugar processed grape juice.

  • Pineapple juice. My girlfriend says its better for me.

    • Pineapple makes women smell better down there.

      • +1

Can only get a small pineapple to fit in "down there", and the texture makes it uncomfortable.

  • Nudie :)

    I make my own.
I used to do it the old fashioned way but now I have a juice loosener. You should see how much I get out of one bag of oranges.

Also good luck with the diabetus.

Nudie with pulp and no aded sugar. Pairs with vodka perfectly.

  • +4

If you can get Mumble Peg juice from Narromine in western NSW it is the best supermarket juice I have ever tasted. Coles carries it west of Sydney, not sure about other places.
The taste does vary according to season, but when the new season crop comes in it is sweet and great.

    • +1

recently discovered this in Coles. Cheaper than Nudie and love the taste.

  • Orange Juice and Apple Juice mixed together tastes way better than standalone.
30-70% depending on your taste buds.

    Tang

  • I am another supporter of Grove with Pulp. Its not broadly available in the supermarkets around me so you need to know who stocks it. I also have to confess, much to a lot of peoples horror I like it 50/50 with water.

  • I miss double pulp juice :(

  • Charlie's mango was mu go to. But they sadly gone 😔

  • No bottled juice tastes close to fresh squeezed. I don't understand why, but they obviously do something to spoil the deliciousness.
My favorite childhood treat was a whole orange and a few icecubes in the blender.

If I'm not mixing up my brands, Nudie uses reconstituted juice.Or is that Nippys? A lot do, you need to read the label closely. 100% juice means nothing.
In SA Coles has a homebrand true 100% fresh juice. I didn't try it, but it was $2/l - a third of the name brands.

I only drink 1/2 glass twice a week (i.e. I like juice with my weekend brekkie) but the stuff is 2nd only to softdrink for sugar content (distant 2nd, but still)
