It might be worth emphasising that this is an ARM based system, it's not Intel compatible like most laptops.
Lots of software will have ARM versions available, but lots more won't.
If you need a web browser and long battery life then ARM might be a good option, if you need to run specific software on the machine (this might include driver software to use certain hardware) then an x86 based system might be a safer bet.
Compatibility is getting a lot better, still some issues though.
around 1 in 12 software don't run at all https://windowsonarm.org/
For casual use (browser, email, YT) it's fine
For professional or engineering use it's not there yetThis laptop is clearly not for any professional or engineering uses anyway
@Raynes: Lul, I'm using it for "professional" software development right now, but the 32GB/1TB version. Everything works, either natively on ARM or under x64 emulation. I don't even notice it. I install everything with UniGetUI which will prefer ARM native binaries first then fall back for the x64 binaries.
@glade90 the vast majority of the "don't run at all" list are games, software with a hardware component (like drivers), and design/CAD software.
For normal Desktop applications, just about everything works fine.
I couldn't see the mention of OS in the page. Is it running Windows?
Thanks——— edited ———
Sorry, found it. Windows. ThanksYou don't necessarily have to run the "ARM" versions of the software - it does Intel translations underneath to run most Intel based versions of apps just fine. There will be things that will struggle though (eg. badly written apps that uses certain Intel / AMD specific calls that is not usually available). The emulation is done on a hardware/kernel level these days and should work at full speed on most apps.
Good warning for 2023, much less of an issue in 2025
I was considering this laptop as I don't need any specific software, but then thought to check printer drivers. Found this on Brother's website: "**Please note that Brother drivers are not compatible with ARM processors on Windows. If your computer is using an ARM processor, the drivers and software will not install or function. However, you may be able to use a built-in generic Windows driver to print with limited functionality." https://www.brother.com.au/en/contents/top-faqs/faq-unable-t…
Is anyone able to confirm if a Brother printer would work? Otherwise it's a dealbreaker for me, being able to print with good functionality is pretty basicBasically, the universal print driver now covers most functions within Windows now. The goal is to remove the need for any third party printer drivers.
So unless your Brother printer does some specific custom feature that you use, the universal driver will cover you for 95% of printer use.
I haven’t used any Brother software with my printer for years now.
You could try hooking up a raspberry pi or one of those cheap gl.inet routers (mango, etc.) and using it as a print server in conjunction with your brother printer, if the generic drivers don't work anyway.
I use my Surface Laptop 7 (also an ARM PC) with my ancient Brother printer with no issues. Print and scan over wifi.
@John Doh: I could scan and create workflows using the Brother iPrint&Scan software no issues with the generic driver, but trying to install the full suite (including Brother drivers & software) failed at the driver installation for the printer.
I haven't used Brother's software ever to print or scan so I couldn't really comment on what would be missing. Although I'm happy to test features for others if they want to check.
@The-Real Team Doge: Thanks for offering to test, but I am all good for now. Not switching to qualcomm anytime soon.
FYI I bought one for $749 last week and it came on Friday. Looks absolutely brand new, and had done 2 charging cycles (not sure if that includes me charging it before use)..
How about the box and packing came with that? was it like a RE-seal?
Was just in a one of those big clear padded bags/sleeves, no box other than the shipping box. So not the same as normal retail (from what I recall of Lenovo).
most likely someone buying it not knowing it was an ARM windows machine and half their sh*t not working … in the US they have warning signs at the retailers for their Qualcomm laptops because of all the returns they are getting lol.
Oh look, another time traveller…
Thank you so much. Was literally about to buy a brand new one yesterday, but this is just as good. Already ordered.
Back in stock.
no it's not
It was out of stock for me but I kept an eye on the website and more stock was added and I order mine at 10:51.. If you are kin, just keep an eye on the website and refresh and maybe more stock wi be added. Hope this help.
Just say "back in stock CURRENTLY" to stop truly ridiculous replies like that one
For anyone who purchased one and wondering like me to find out whether the SSD can be upgrade. Yes, it can be upgrade. Here is the manual. https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/ideapad_sli…
Love Lenovo for including stuff like that in the manual
Nice. Is it worth upgrading if the size isn’t an issue? Are there any performance gains from another drive that are noticeable?
Thanks, snagged one. Hope it’s decent condition.
