Kogan Mobile 365 Days Prepaid SIM/eSim - 200GB $139 @ Kogan

1130

Got notice yesterday that my Boost plan was expiring today - so went hunting for a new plan on Whistle-out.

Saw this and thought it was a pretty good deal (at the moment, anyways).

Copied from the website:

  • Purchase this plan with FIRST and get $5 Kogan.com Credit!
  • $139 for 200GB of Data across 365 days – 17GB per 30 days
  • VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling capabilities
  • BYO Phone number & device
  • UNLIMITED* standard national calls for 365 days
  • UNLIMITED* standard texts and MMS for 365 days
  • Free eSIM card included
  • All for use within Australia
  • Voucher must be purchased by 11:59PM AEDT on 20/04/2025.
  • Voucher expires at 11:59PM AEDT on 31/05/2025.
  • Can be used by new or existing customers (as a recharge)

Currently only the Large mobile plans support 5G - so I assume this plan will only have 4G coverage. Not sure if this could change mid plan - but 4G is plenty for my needs.

Been using Kogan for years and it's always by far the cheapest deal out there. Service is good, never had any issues.
Only thing is 5G is not yet available but if you don't look for super high speed internet it's all good. (Still I can get over 100mbps on 4G sometimes…)
Relies on Vodafone , so I wouldn't pick this if I lived away from cities.

    • Am on a month to month plan with Kogan, biggest issue is that on the night of expiry your phone loses the ability to make calls/send texts/browse internet at midnight 12am. The recharge gets processed anytime from 30 mins to 3 hours.

Always known about it as I am generally up at that time but I could get by with WiFi. Recently was left stranded for 3 hours without connectivity. Need to switch away from them as I cannot have another one of these outages.

Do the yearly one instead of the month by month. Same price, same data, no hassle

        • I use 60-70 gigs a month watching netflix when on the road for work.

          • +1

@Prodev3r: If I use 60GB of data per month, I’ll go with Belong’s $21 plan and buy 700GB of data on eBay for $68.

I've found my network is way worse on a 5G network and prefer having it connect to 4G. I live in Melbourne city as well, not somewhere rural.

On 5G it's much less stable and the speeds seem pretty much identical to 4G. Also uses up more battery. So I don't think 5G is important at all.

    • +1

Vodafone recently expanded so they've got 98.5% of the coverage and using some of Telstra now

      • +5

it's optus. Superior coverage on optus imo

        • +2

My bad, well just 0.1% behind Optus so that's pretty good. I'll take it

    • +11

why do you need 5G? Honest question

        • +4

I genuinely want to know a use case of 5G vs 4G

        • Because you need it to load any modern application or web browser. Meanwhile, you can get around fine using 4G mobile data for the most part.

  • +2

Good deal. I this a few days ago with my $10 credit for the HP ddd fiasco, so $129/200gb and happy with that.

Vodafone has now got a deal with Optus sharing hardware in rsome egional/rural and can vouch it has improved

now in some I have travelled through.

    • +1

Vodafone sold their towers to Optus in exchange for access to Optus full network. So Optus maintains towers but still seperate core networks. In my opinion its gone to the shits now. Optus will do what optus does best look after their own.

I have a postpaid $20/month with Kogan. How can I move to this prepaid plan without losing the number?

    • I just went through the activation process now - it asks if you want to use a new number or bring your old one. (It also asks if you are currently on post-paid or pre-paid plan). As long as your contract is over - shouldn't be an issue - although you may want to consider your billing cycle - not sure if they pro-rata for the month you switch out on or charge you a full month for the post-paid plan.

    • Do you mean prepaid set to auto-recharge? Because I don't think Kogan mobile does postpaid. I think you would just get the voucher code by buying this, turn off auto-recharge and then use the voucher code for the 365 day plan to recharge.

Can Kogan receive SMS from overseas without roaming like Boost?

    • +3

Just came back from Europe using a travel eSIM with my Kogan SIM card installed in my iPhone. Still received SMS from Australia.

      • +2

All the networks have long had free roaming for incoming SMS, haven't they?

Boost and Telstra, resellers let you make call and SMS without roaming, using VoWifi instead.
        Voda blocks it.

      Why neg a question?

    • They can now, but it wasn't always the case, made 2fa and WiFi from changi airport impossible

Any reason to get the 17GB/30 days over the flex 200GB version?

    • +1

no reason at all, except if you want to opt out within a year you can at no loss

    • +2

if youre a teenager with no self control

    • Does flex have esim?

      • You can select esim/Sim/none on both plans

  • esim via QR code. might get this for my samsung watch

  • +3

VoLTE? That is nice of them.

    • +1

I'm assuming this is sarcastic, considering that's literally the bare minimum these days, what with the 3G network shutdown.

  • Does this have 5g?

    • No access to voda's nokia AEQE's on this plan, so no 5G yet.

  • Any discount code?

    • APPLOVE via the app gives $5 discount.

  • I've been looking at this for a secondary number for work calls (my employer doesn't have desk phones) so I don't need to keep giving my personal number out. Only thing is I wouldn't be able to byo a number. Is there a cheap way to get an unlocked esim in order to byo?

    • What do you mean by byo number?

  • +1

Not as good as the 500GB ($89) -$100 Voucher deal, however Vodafone is pretty bad on my street….

    • +3

500GB for $89. How? Please let me know. Thanks

    • ??? what deal?

    • More info please

can you receive sms txt without activate international roaming while travelling?? (i.e receive credit card security code)
i know amaysims does, unsure about kogan

    • I’m travelling in Vietnam at the moment. Can confirm I get my OTP sms’s without activating roaming

      • I was in Vietnam some days ago.

Can confirm amaysim doesn't get signal there so no roaming/cannot recieve free sms with optus it seems

but can confirm roaming works with vodafone and telstra sims(boost)

        as in receiving free sms

        • I was in Vietnam with amaysim as well. Had to hop on chat and ask the rep to enable roaming for me. After that I could roam on Mobifone, with free incoming SMS like usual.

          • @nguyenlucky: Oh wow that's a thing so you had to ask chat?

Just with a PAYG plan? I had a prepaid 28/30day service or whatever and switch to PAYG after the plan ranout (was one of them ozbarg cashback deals).

But yeah didn't try that at all well didn't know you can.

            • @AeymothSky: It was a Woolies in-store 1 year sim I bought some time last year. In the app it asked me to buy a roaming pack so I figured I would just chat with them for more information.

They enabled the roaming pack server-side and warned that I would only be able to receive SMS for free (which is enough for me).

Edit: With a previous amaysim sim card I was able to enable roaming with just a switch in the app, but that wasn't the case anymore I think.

              • @nguyenlucky: wait so not amaysim?

                • @AeymothSky: Yes it was amaysim, the one posted here as Woolies in-store only, and not Woolies mobile. I think it was 140GB or something.

                  • @nguyenlucky: Ah righto, makes sense, thanks for your comment, I'll be sure to use it next time I'm in vietnam :D

  • This or the Lebara deal from WW? - They both use vodafone network, so does that mean they will be the same experience?

Be very careful with Kogan when you purchase anything from them.

I have purchased this 'medium' plan from them and they sent me a voucher code which I used for recharge of my existing 'small' plan on the Kogan mobile app. The recharge was successful but the data balance of my small plan was forfeited. I called the Mobile Help Centre up and they simply said 'bad luck', there would be no credit and refund for prepaid plans. I found nothing on their website alerting you that.

I bought a weight bench from Kogan on eBay last year but after several months, they had a recall due to safety issues. They took the weight bench back and processed a refund for the purchase price only. They refused to refund the delivery charge.

    I think they are CONS.

    • Your particular gripe on data is explicitly pointed out in the "Plan Information & Terms" section

Data sessions rounded to the nearest KB. Once data inclusion is exhausted, you will need to purchase a data pack or recharge to continue using data. Unused data expires on next recharge or expiry date of the recharge, whichever is earlier. For 365 FLEX Plans up to 102,400MB (SMALL 365 FLEX Plan) 204,800MB (MEDIUM 365 FLEX Plan) 256,000MB (LARGE 365 FLEX Plan) or 512,000MB (EXTRA LARGE 365 FLEX Plan) will be added to the account. 1GB = 1024MB. If data amount is exhausted before plan expires access to data will cease until the customer recharges or purchases a data pack.

I don't think this is unique to Kogan, other budget carriers do this.
Unless Roll Over is specifically mentioned you can assume you do not get to use remain time/data. if Roll over is mentioned there are usually T&C that will apply.

The other important point to note is the last day to activate which in this deal is
The unique Kogan Mobile voucher must be redeemed by 11:59PM AEST on 31/05/2025.
This is so you cannot just buy it when its on special well in advance but rather need to time your recharge to the very latest day possible

  • I need better reception, so buget choice for me is boost so far, but it seems not working in glen waverley area where the bush trail walk is…
