@Calmago Hi, is this powered via usb-c? so I can use my usb-c docking to supply power to the laptop as well as connected to the monitor? thanks.

    • +4

      Yes that is correct.

  • Will you also be listing this on your Ebay store?

    • +2

No sorry. We are also unable to offer the upgrades.

    • +3

It is upgradable. I use this exact model with 16GB as my daily work machine. It runs well and I've never had any issues with it.

    • +34

They literally say in the deal post that there is a ram upgrade option.
And you can see there is one available if you go to the item page too.

      5 seconds worth of reading.

      • -2

Sure, but the comment by op 4 comments up above made it a bit ambiiguous.

        • +7

So you can read the comments on a deal, but not the actual deal?

          • -3

@ASR-Briggs: Of course most people including me can and did, But the comment

"We are also unable to offer the upgrades." came later yeah.

Don't just jump the gun and assume so quickly.

            • -1

@ozhunter68: ……which was in response to a question about eBay…..

              • +2

                @ASR-Briggs: Sure to be sure.

Not the first time people mix things up and make mistakes :-)

  • +2

    Backlit keyboard?

    • +5

From the few that I checked yes, But I can't guarantee it.

  • +6

We purchased 6x laptops from these guys last year on eBay sales. The 5420s we received were in outstanding condition and this is a bargain price on what we paid last year.

Just bought another 6 and hopefully they're as good :)

We did have a slight quality issue with 2 non-5420s and seller was happy to organise a return. We kept them anyway as just for admin purposes and didn't affect use - but it was good to know store was responsive.

    • +1

Can vouch for their warranty. Had one (diff model) that the USB-C charging port failed after about 6 months so couldn't charge it anymore.

They covered return cost and sent me another one.

      • +1

        Direct purchase or via eBay?

        • +4

Our customer service team offer the same service regardless of which channel. Only issue with eBay is if you want a replacement, but open a return request, we are forced to following the return for refund request.

        • +1

From their ebay store I think that one was. Just contacted them via eBay messaging, they supplied a return label, I sent back and within about a week they'd sent out a replacement.

But as rep says, shouldn't matter either way.

  • ah this would've been perfect for me if the screen was bigger :(

  • Thanks OP. Good upgrade for my aging 7490 that's taken a few hits.

  • +2

What's the battery life like for these models?

  • Does it have fingerprint reader?

    • +2

From the few that I checked, yes the fingerprint reader is part of the power button. But I can't guarantee it.

    • +1

The latitude series fingerprint readers are known to be pretty useless after a few years. I haven't used mine in a long time because it is frustrating when it fails 99% of the time) and I have to enter the password anyway.

The official trick to make it work is to lick your finger, rub it on your shirt lightly, then stick it in the reader. This works, the remaining 1% of the time.

  • Great deal but already have a few refurbs haha.

Anything lighter with 16gb ram? Got a surface pro 5 which I use for travel but its just a bit too underpowered for my liking. Form factor/weight is perfect though.

          I got you - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/186741965956?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

Current eBay refurb coupon code brings it to $332

          • +2

            @anthman: Good find, impulse purchased

          • @anthman: Also their used range for $30 less https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/186894929705?

          • @anthman: Bought 1. Thanks!

          • +2

@anthman: I received mine today. Really disappointed - it certainly does not feel like an "A grade" refurbished laptop (the Lenovo yoga l13 deal recently was much much much better condition - what I would expect for an A grade).

            Mine has the following:
            * 82% battery capacity (ok)
            * A crack on the base plate
            * Missing rubber feet and the rubber bar has one dangling loose
            * The screen has lots of scratches and dents and stains that seem stuck on.

Really disappointed, I feel cheated. Sorry for those who clicked the link I found, I was too trusting given all the upvotes.

            • +1

@anthman: WTF ,, Crack in the base plate still grade A?..

            • +1

@anthman: Contact them, I'm sure they'll be reasonable to deal with.

Not what I'd call A grade according to their description. Apart from the battery scraping in above 80% definitely seems to fit the B grade category.

              • +1

@bamzero: Thanks. I've messaged Camalgo on ozb and sent them an eBay message.

The link you shared describes keyboard imprints in the screen under b grade - my one definitely has heaps of those!

                • +1

@anthman: Thanks all. I contacted ACT and they gave me a return label which I've shipped back today for a replacement. I just need the screen to be unmarked which according to the comments, seems all possible. Scuffs on the outside, I don't mind.

Thanks all for your replies! Will post back when I get my replacement.

            • +2

@anthman: When a product has been graded as A Grade, it means that the device has been renewed to be ‘as good as new’. https://www.australiancomputertraders.com.au/our-refurbishme…

            • +3

@anthman: Mine has been delivered to my PO box but haven't had a chance to go collect it yet. Will also share an update when I do (probably Thursday).

            • @anthman: I'm sorry - i also bought. Hopefully we can send them back?

            • @anthman: Received mine today (Dynabook Portégé off ebay as per the link). Scuff marks everywhere. Rubber feet and strip are all gone. Very disappointed as it's not "Very Good Refurbished". I expect it to be in a better condition.

          • +1

@anthman: Ordered too from the 399 link too, let's see how I go Monday

            • +2

              @Nalar: Screen is fine
Case is scuffed all over but expected on 2nd hand
buttons are either worn or dirty.
              Rubber foot missing
Hinge feels loose-ish but I dont know if thats normal
              Battery is 88%

              • +3

@Nalar: I couldn't wait and picked it up on the way to work this morning and threw the box out at the station, bringing the laptop into work with me.

The plastic body gives some serious flex - but I guess that's how the weight is kept down.

                Inside it looks very good:
                - keyboard looks basically unused
                - some minor scratches on the palmrests that are only visible under light reflections
                - no imprints on screen
                - hinge also feels flimsy but I think that normal

Outside is a bit worse but acceptable:
                - missing a front foot as well, although doesn't seem to make it wobbly
                - the longer rubber foot thing has some serious wear/peeling - might see what i can do about that somehow….
                - on the lid can see where a sticker has been removed - not because there's still residue but because its a different shade of grey in that area (as though it was never exposed to the sun)

Battery I'll need to test when I get home though, I cbf doing Windows setup while at work to check but given the rest of the condition I'll expect the battery life is OK.

Came with a Dell branded USB-C charger.

                I'm happy enough with it.

                • +1

@Shadowsfury: I received mine this morning. Happy with it, good condition and everything appears to be working. It's quite slim and light. How nice!

edit, one of the front rubber feet is missing. should i remove the other one? Haven't figured out how to get into the bios yet so i can put linux on it. I haven't figured out how to check the battery % but will edit it in when I do.

                  • +2

@magnitude: Not as slim as I expected but very happy with the weight

Haha yeah I'm undecided on leaving one foot on or just removing the remaining one. Why so many lost one foot?!?!

                  • +1

@magnitude: Bios - Open command prompt in administrator mode and enter: shutdown /r /fw
Rubber foot - seems like everyone has one missing, it doesn't really make it wobble when sitting on the desk so up to you
Battery - Command prompt in admin again - powercfg /batteryreport

Out of interest, hows the hinge is it solid or very loose? and same with flex of the bottom part? is it flexy

                    • +1

@Nalar: @Nalar hinge is very normal to me (not unusually loose), same with the flex on the base (the unit that holds the keyboard). Thanks it looks like my battery is just around the borderline (<80)).

                  • @magnitude: Thanks for sharing feedback on the dynabook, how is the performance? Is it suitable for a student , who just needs it for ms word/ excel/ ppt and for streaming YouTube/ Netflix?

                    • @Spadty195: Performance is very good. I can't fault it on that end. I'd be happy with it as a student, just hope you get a good battery because as a student you have to be unplugged often?

                      • @magnitude: Good point. Yeah I will be using it unplugged most of day. How long do you reckon would it last on a 80% battery?

                        • @Spadty195: That's luck of the draw. Mine says it will do about 6 hours but i haven't tested it from 100% to zero yet, so I can't say how accurate that estimate is. If battery life is important, i'd skip this one and get a used Lenovo and buy a new battery from Ebay imho.

                        • @Spadty195: Depending on your use case/how many hours you need, maybe consider instead of carrying around the power brick, carry around a big portable battery to keep it topped up instead. Obviously the portabe battery can run out too but maybe is enough to keep you going and then just charge both at home.

          • +1

@anthman: To close the loop: I sent the laptop back, all good. Got a replacement sent - screen not as bad but still lots of keyboard imprints. Also there is an area on the right that looks likes it pressed in - like if you were to push on the screen and the colour changes - I suspect it's from keyboard pressing on the screen when closed during its previous use.

Overall, I would not buy from these guys again - their definition of A grade does not meet the expectation of A grade, even by their own definition on their website. Read the other comments for similar experiences. I would rate this "A grade" as B+ at best.

Compared to the other Lenovo yoga l13 refurb deal (same price), this is absolutely night and day - the Lenovo yoga is near new condition except for battery, the definition of A grade.

            Buyer beware.

      • +1

        Nice will consider, thank you

      • Anyone know if the Dynabooks have backlit keyboards?

        • If you can wait I'll let you know next week when it arrives.

          • @Nalar: I contacted the eBay seller and unfortunately they said not his batch. Really need backlit keyboard for my use case.

            • +2

@ozhunter68: Turns out, it does have backlight, at least the one I received.

              • @Nalar: Very happy to hear that for you and others who ordered.

I would have ordered one if that was communicated clearer and more certain. How is the condition of the case, screen and battery?

                • +1

@ozhunter68: see above. Not the "refurb as new" described, but probably not as bad a some B grades I've seen.

  • Looks pretty good for a cheap egpu setup :D

  • Just a pity about the lack of storage options on this model: Only one SSD, given the size of the notebook it should have been easy for Dell to have two slots.

    • +3

@whats up skip - there are some good value upgrade options on the dropdown list, for 500gb / 1TB / 2TB SSD storage!

      • Sure, but that doesn't help if you want two different kinds of drives: one fast for booting and some data, then a larger slower one.

  • great deal

  • Is this the touchscreen model ?

    • +3

      Negative

      • Hi @Calmago,
Can I please ask if you have any dynabook x30w-J in good condition with above 80% battery levels?

Am using this for work with 16gb ram and 512gb ssd variant. Amazing workhorse!

  • +2

    Any surface pro deal?

  • +2

any 15 or 16 inch screens for people who just want a larger screen?

    • same here, looking for a laptop with a bigger screen

    • +2

No sorry, not really seeing volumes of 15" units these days.

    • +5

The companies buying these devices are expecting staff to take them to and from the office. 14" is the largest device people will accept for this but also the smallest screen size people are happy to use by itself.

      It's a bit of a sweet spot.

  • Anyone installed Linux on these?

I've typically always used my work laptop for personal use too (with no major issues) but recently they've installed zscaler and traffic now going through proxy etc I'm more hesitant to use it for personal use now.

I'm looking for a lightweight alternative that doesn't break the bank. 1.3kg or less is best, I don't need a powerhouse. I have a gaming pc for that. It'd just be for managing my proxmox and docker stuff, and web/e mail/ media consumption etc.

(I'd really love a macbook air m2 onwards frankly but can't justify the price jump currently…)

    • +2

Linux should work just fine. These Hackintosh pretty well, too.

  • Special Discount 'Dell 5420 Sale' from Australian Computer Traders (5420$196) only applies to specific products. Your order will be processed without this discount.

    • Haha did you try the coupon on a different laptop?

      • Same laptop

        • +1

should be good, can you try again?

  • +3

OP, thanks for making the RAM upgrade option!

  • OP is there plenty of stock at the moment? Need to move some $$ around before I purchase. :)

    • +1

At the current sell rate, maybe another hours worth.

  • What's the difference between this and the 7-series Latitudes?

    • Virtually indistinguishable for the same size and generation.

    • +1

The 7 series move closer to the ultrabook type of style.

  • Hey @Calmago just wanted to check what drives are you guys using for storage upgrade?

    • +1

As in specific drives? Couldn't tell you sorry as we order from suppliers what is available at the time. They are new however.

      • There are 1tb and 2tb options listed under upgrades. So just wanted to check if they're gen3 or gen4
