  • Random question, did you used to/still do have a service manager (I think) named Tim (I think) who had a suziki swift all wheel drive that was imported from Japan?

    • Negative

    • Why?

      • Because 25 odd years ago I remember going in there a few times as one of the owners of the small company I was working for worked there, not sure about the name or position but he had just imported an AWD Suziki Swift GTi like car (I think the Japanese badge was Cultus). Maybe it was another with a similar name, thought I'd test my memory heh.

        • I did know a guy who used to live in north side of Melbourne who was a big fan of chicken kebabs with hommus and bbq sauce.

          Not sure if that helps?

          • @butter: sounds like a monster, hommus on a chicken kebab…

Thanks ACT. Bought for my son to use as a school laptop . Never been disappointed with their products. Bought close to a hundred devices over the years business and otherwise and all have been excellent quality.

  • do you know how many ram slot in the laptop, is there any empty slot for adding more 8GB ram?

      B grade @ A$249?

      • Yeah I would bite at $249

  • Can this run command and conquer remastered?

    • I would say yes

  • What would be the difference between this and a latitude 3520 with the i7 1165G7?
Recently bought one from FB marketplace for $250. Thinking if this is a step up in terms of portability or it’s much better might get this and sell the 3520

    And gone

    Damn sold out

    • Still says available

I've relapsed into buying unnecessary tech from Ozb :'(

    • That’s not relapse son, that’s the prime directive around here

  • Argh just saw on phone and about to pull the trigger but missed out!!

  • +4

    No thanks to B grade

  • Sold out?

    • not sure. I bought one / went through .. like 10 mins ago… still says available

  • My checkout failed after a successful payment with PayPal, saying 0 availability of this product. I hope my PayPal will get refunded soon.

@calmago, do I need to do anything to get the refund? Thanks.

Do have B Grade units left

      • +5

B grade units are not really a deal. Even with the discount.

        • +1

          yeah agree

          • +2

@paul04: Kind of a bit scammy, 'offering' the same price for lower grade.

            • -1

@Nalar: Not the same price. They are still cheaper (~$282).

            • +6

@Nalar: The worrying part is what if they accidentally send you the B grade?

I bought the A grade and they accidentally sent me the B grade. (Lots of scratches , sound not working, one of the usb is not working - more like C grade to me) Took 3 months to get money back.

        • +4

I don't normally go into this level of detail, but to be honest the B Grade stock is pretty nice.

Under the lid they look barely used, however the suffer from bad paint peel when removing assest stickets. Batteries are all recording good too.

I've take a few photos and pasted them below. Just to note the products still need to be cleaned and packed.

          • @Calmago: I just bought a b-grade. Will take your word.

          • @Calmago: Can you chop off a bit more on your b grade to make it a comparable deal for the condition?

            • @kickling: Pricing is already pretty sharp on those units.

          • @Calmago: Gotta go the extra for the OzBargain fam…

@OP any surface pro deals ?

  • +1

I used Apple Pay to check out but no stock shown after the payment. I saw the record in my Apple Pay history. Do I need to do anything to get refund or you received me the order?

  • +1

    Darn it. Missed out

  • +1

@OP, B grade with 16GB $301 after apply the code, would be good to make it below $300

    • $300 so you can claim TRS, no?

      • Not planning to claim TRS

      • +3

I think that below $300 you can write this off in one year without any depreciation for the tax purposes.

  • she gone

  • Refurbished laptops actually seem pretty nice

  • I am genuinely curious about the usecases for refurb laptops that are few years old. I get that price is a big part of the deal, but from my personal experience, even the new Windows laptops from most brands (Dell, Lenovo, HP etc) start to deteriorate drastically after around 5-6 years, to the point you struggle to do even basic tasks as word processing or web browsing because of slowness. So assuming refurbs are already few years old, what do people use it for and how long they last in that specific job? Do people use it as media server or some IoT stuff or something else? Because I can't think of these for actual work purposes, may be for a couple years at max, but is that worth the hassle to chuck it to landfill in just few years? Again, no judgements, genuinely curious as I like the price, but don't know what would I use it for.

    • +3

I'm genuinely curious about what you're doing that's wearing a new laptop out in 5 years, especially since CPUs are incredibly durable and can run continuously for many years without issues if properly cooled. In most cases, motherboards tend to be the weakest link due to power surges or long-term heat exposure, but they can still last decades without real issues if properly taken care of.

    • +1

I still have a 2007 Dell Latitude around somewhere (D630 I'm fairly sure) that's still perfectly functional for word processing and web browsing as long as you don't open as many tabs as I typically do. For me I bought refurb for my most recent laptop because I got twice the RAM for something like half the price (yeah I know I have a tabs problem, but it was cheap enough, I already wanted to get another laptop, and I do have reasons to keep some of them open okay).

    • Have you tried re installing winblows? A fresh install will often get rid of the bloat that builds up over time slowing the machine.
These are also good for Linux installs.

    • Kids laptop.

    • +2

start to deteriorate drastically after around 5-6 years

That is not normal at all. The only thing that should be expected to deteriorate is battery life, and batteries can easily be replaced in most models, including Dell.
It is possible that you have experienced slowdown to to thermal problems from blocked or failing fans,
but far more likely you have a software problem. Windows installs can slow with age.

Why get a new laptop when all you need is to re-install Windows (or something better)?
Android is a different matter - they really can slow with age due to forced updates and bloat. Windows has not done that in many years.

My workplace still uses 9th Gen i5 desktops. About the only thing it doesn't like is massive spreadsheets and massive PowerBI's, otherwise it's plenty quick for a ~$300 workstation.

  • Is this a scam? After purchasing the A-grade model yesterday, I received an invoice showing paid but without an order number! WTF?

    • +1

Reach out to @Calmago. He’s usually very responsive.

    • +1

Doesn’t sound right. Send through a pm and I’ll take a look. Or if you log into your account you can see your order details.

    • I purchased a new RJ40G battery from eBay for $80, installed it, and based on the battery report, ChatGPT confirmed that it appears to be a genuine Dell battery.

  • +1

Looks like its back in stock.
    Just picked one w/ memory

    • Oos again. Can't check out

      • I signed up for notifications about said model and received an email that it appeared in stock. So just got one.

        • Yeah i just saw my email. Must have only been 1

  • Has anyone received their tracking number or order yet?

    • +1

      Yes, on Friday.

      • +1

Yes, but I'm a bit worried since someone received one that doesn't align with the 'Grade A' classification.,

        • I would find that very concerning too.

        • +2

check the SKU in the invoice,

          if it's SKU: Dell5420i56-r then Grade A;

          otherwise Dell5420i56-r-B if Grade B

    • +1

      Nope not yet!

  • +1

    Recieved order today.

When turning on, screen does not load up with anything.

anyone else got any issues or a solution on this one?

    Cheers

    • Mine went Win11 setup after power button.

  • +4

Just received A grade (Dell5420i56-r), base looks bad with peeling and some scratch on top. Not sure if we can call this A grade.
But I don't really mind as I'll be leaving this at work as work dell 16 is too big to carry around.

    https://ibb.co/nM2wPSxx
    https://ibb.co/DHj1g6Sx

    • On the base, maybe that's where a sticker (eg asset tag) used to be?

It's on the bottom, so not a big deal?

      • Yes, not big deal.
Latitude these days are known for paint chip.

    • +5

From the images you posted, the condition does not match the seller's now questionable description of A-grade units.

      • +2

With the Pics provided, This is definitely not Grade A quality. I've purchased many Grade A laptops from other vendors, and all of them were in pristine condition.

According to their website , "When a product is graded as Grade A, it implies that the device has been renewed to be "as good as new."

        https://www.australiancomputertraders.com.au/dell-latitude-5…

This isn't good… I'm confident similar issues will arise as more people start receiving the item.

    • Shell is scuffed but how's the ports and inside of it, especially the screen? The scratches are unlucky but if everything else works then I'd be lenient enough to give them the A still.

An easy fix if you don't mind the tackiness for the gash on the top is a large mono-colour sticker from ali or ebay. 14" rectangular one in silver.

  • Anyone else’s tracking stuck at “Label been created by sender” since Wednesday?

  • +1

My order says Status: Dispatched but Tracking not yet available. Is that normal? I’m in Melbourne SE suburbs

  • Mine came today (regional NSW) and was in 'A' grade condition apart from a nvme hold down screw rattling around under the mother board that required a bit of disassembly to extract.
Bonus WWAN 4G LTE card installed I didn't expect!

  • +2

Got mine today, unfortunately not what I expected for A grade. Some scratches on top and peeling at base :(
    https://ibb.co/DPbq8rP4

  • +2

Definitely not A Grade sadly. Plenty of scuff marks and deep scratches on the body.

    • +1

Based on the comments from those who’ve already received their orders, this seems highly suspicious — it’s starting to look like a scam. The items definitely don’t appear to be Grade A as advertised.

      • +1

Ok, I received mine today. Here's my assessment:
A few scuff marks on the top cover, and some paint peeled off on the bottom — likely due to asset tag removal.
No marks or scratches inside, or the panel, looks clean.
Hinges are solid — no issues.
Battery health is at 94.6%, which is better than expected.
Mounting pads are intact, nothing wrong there.
I haven’t tested the ports or overall performance yet.
The charger still has its original plastic cover.
Overall, considering the condition, I’d rate this as Grade A — nothing to complain about.

          • @chutibuti: Are you sure it's not microSD card slot?

            • @kampret: definitely not SSD slot,, exact model is WWAN: Dell DW5820e Fibocom L850 GL LTE/WCDMA

  • +3

I got mine a few days ago.

Purchased A grade, and generally it looks pretty good, but I am struggling with battery life - I'm getting a max of 2-3 hours even on battery saver mode.

Reviews of this laptop often highlight how amazing the battery life is, often saying it lasts 9-15 hours. Even at 80% capacity, I should be getting much more 2-3 hours…

Anyone else having this issue as well, or know what to do?

    • +4

Mine came with a 3 cell 42Wh battery not the optional larger 63Wh battery so 2-3 hrs is about right for a 80% battery.
Replacement 63Wh batteries (RJ40G) should cost about $50 delivered.

      • +1

        i think genuine costs more

        • +1

They are probably all made in the same factory, Genuine is about $85, if you want to get one from Aliexpress it's $45.

          • +1

@iratepirate: Do you know any place where I can get a genuine one for $85?

            • +1

@chutibuti: If you search ebay for "RJ40G genuine" there are lots on there for around that price.

  • received the laptop today, generally it looks good except,
    1. the cable for the LED charge light is missing, so the charing light not working
    2. RTC CMOS Battery assembly is missing (next to SSD slot), which caused the system complainng everytime

    • +1

As far as I am aware. they remove this to avoid any detection of the MB issues, Refer to this for more details (https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-au/latitude-5420-lap… )

If there is a failure with the system board, the battery status LED flashes the error codes for 30 seconds. L-BIST is an enhancement to the single LED error code diagnostics and is automatically initiated during POST. L-BIST will check
the LCD power rail. If there is no power being supplied to the LCD (that is if the L-BIST circuit fails), the battery status LED
      flashes either an error code

  • Can somebody tell me what the battery reporting software that was on the computer when I first started it up was?
It seems to have auto deleted itself?

    • Nilsoft battery viewer. Was located in my startup folder.

  • So.. did anybody that bought the Dynabook have trackpad stuttering/unresponsive issues? I’ve emailed ACT but want to try a few troubleshooting steps or a solution if someone has one. I’ve tried reinstalling windows, reinstalling drivers etc to no avail.

    • Its a rubbish trackpad (potentially the worst ive ever used) but its working nonetheless.
