Might not be ATL but I was on the hunt for a WD Red to replace a degrading 4TB in my Synology NAS.

This might be the best time to explore Dell refurb SFF machines with vPro capability as well.

  • Anyone running Synology NAS know if putting WD Reds are still a no go?

    • +4

WD Pro and Plus are CMR so they're fine

Basic WD Red are SMR so they aren't

    • +1

Have had 8 of these running across two Synology NAS (4 each) for 3+ years, no issues. Added 4 more last December (2 per NAS). All drives locally sourced.

  • I think this is cheaper, and a conversation starter

thats the most broken amazon listing ive seen lmao

    • Think again.

    • Does the 2 storey xbox come with the HDD or is that just a picture?

Dell refurb SFF machines with vPro capability

    which model do you recommend?

Very average price tbh, it's been at this price on and off since December, and it's been cheaper before

    • Fair point - as I highlighted it is not ATL, but seemingly - at least on amazon's website - it shows up with a -30%.

      • +2

Never blindly believe a discount tag :)

  • +12

10 TB for $355 is $35.5 per TB which isn't competitive. Aim for like $25 or per TB.

  • Is a google search the best place to start looking into a home NAS setup or can anyone recommend a guide?

    • +5

Look into whether you want to run a hypervisor, eg Proxmox, or bare OS, eg TrueNAS/Open Media Vault, then go from there

      • +3

Personally, if someone doesn’t know where to start, then I’d recommend maybe looking at Synology, Qnap and the like is going to be a better starting point.

Proxmox and those other OS involve diving in a fair bit deeper and if they’re a good fit, you’ll probably have some idea going in.

        • Very true, there are off the shelf solutions

Plenty of threads and discussion on ozbargain.

      Start with your requirements:

      File sharing
      Redundancy
      Media server
      Dockers
      How much storage
      Physical size
      Power consumption

    Terrible price, not a deal

    • +2

Can you please help me find a better deal right now? That's the best I could find, but happy to cancel my order and buy it for less. Thanks!

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/901496

        Significantly cheaper per tb

        • +2

While you are right it’s also $150ish more expensive so not too sure if comparable.

        • +1

I'm not defending this deal specifically, but that is a poor comparison. The Seagate is an internal drive for a PC. They are lower quality for NAS purposes.

  • +2

While not a "terrible" price, I've seen anecdotally the 10TB has different internals to the 8TB and the 12TB, and NAS users have complained about the noise level of the 10TB drive on forums.

    Just one such example below:
    https://www.reddit.com/r/synology/comments/186lquk/comment/k…

That being the case, if you don't care about a noisier drive, just get an enterprise (or ex-enterprise) drive from East Digital.

    • I have a 10TB red with 49000hours. Noise has never been an issue, side of case is off

      • +1

I've got WD 8's and 16's and I'm happy with them. I can't believe the 10 would be terrible for noise but it's not awesome value either so I'd probably pass.

    • I'm a bit worried about the price. Whilst not directly comparable I have a WD8002PURP that hums like crazy. It's driving me insane and putting me off any WD drives, even thinking of replacing it

    • +2

Up to 8TB Red Plus drives are 5400RPM, then from 10TB they're 7200RPM. To counteract the noise from the extra speed, the helium filled ones start at 12TB - so this 10TB is much louder.

  • +3

I have returned 3 out of 4 HDD from amazon I have bought this year.
Packaging on all of them as been woeful! Coming from UK,.DE and USA
Still waiting for refunds on 2
Bought 20TB Red from Umart and it is working

  • I sell my red wolf NAS HD 12TB for $390 each and it is not refurbished HD.

    • Are these refurb HDDs? I couldn't find any indication of that.

    • Where?

  • How hot do these run? Last time I checked they are air filled, not helium filled.

  • +1

Id love a deal on on WB 16TB Red Pro's they seem to never go on sale

    • +1

    • Sometimes the big WD Red Pro 22 & 24's go on sale sub at Amazon $800. It's a lot of money (although comparable price per TB as this) but for those who want maximum storage on quality brand new drives, it's an option.

      • Those big drives are great if you've got limited storage slots in your NAS. I have 14 HDD bays in my rackmount case, and if I throw a lone 22/24TB in the mix, it would either have to be my parity drive in the array, or I'd only have 12TB usable of the 22/24TB (since my current parity drive is 12TB), or I'd have to raw-dog it as a solo drive without any array protections. I really would have to buy at least 2 of them to have it make sense.

tbh, the best thing for me about those larger drives is that it eventually drives the prices of lower capacity drives down, in theory (and sometimes practice).

  • Great drive. Run my 12TB one 24/7 in a Silverstone FS305B-12G enclosure. Runs a little hotter than my helium filled Exos, but within safe limits for sure.

Only issue: I got my 12TB for around this price from DeviceDeal (in 2023). In 2022, I got 2x 10TB Exos for around that price (each) from there, too. At least shopping with them, they have a physical warehouse (Eastern suburbs in Melb) - have even opted to pick up from there before. Would rather that than having to RMA a drive overseas.

Look around for local stores when they have sales (DeviceDeal having nothing of note right now). I'd even pay more to get it from CentreCom for $395 (if you can't wait for a sale) - even less of a bargain, but most certainly Australian stock, stores in multiple locations and states, etc. https://www.centrecom.com.au/wd-red-plus-wd101efbx-35-10tb-n… (I'd actually go the 10TB Exos for $379 with its 5 year warranty, since any extra noise of a DC drive is of no concern in my set-up - https://www.centrecom.com.au/seagate-exos-7e10-10tb-512e4kn-…)
