Definitely not when I lived that side of town…
I've had to throw all of mine out after the humidity in Queensland this past summer has caused all the MDF to grow mould. I'd only buy these for use in a low-humidity environment.

Couldn't tell you where Footscray is but Melbourne has a reputation for being wetter than platypus' pocket.
Sydney has the same amount of rain days as Melbourne with double the rainfall. I assume Queensland would be worse.

My dad did this when I was a kid for his particle board garage shelves. At the time I thought "who lacquers particle board?" I picked them up a few months ago 35 years later and their condition is amazing, despite lots of chemical spills on them over the years
