Was spending $20 two years ago, now paying double that in Sydney.

For some, $20 haircut, but $20 search fee.

    • +5

      search fee?

        • +18

          IDKWYATB

        • And now I know my IYKYK, next time won't you…

      • -1

balding, hair loss, receding hairline etc.

search fee to look for the hair to cut.

  • +21

Who's doing $5 haircuts, Ray Charles?

    • +4

      Barbers colleges.

    • +7

Actually there's $2 haircuts at TAFE Ultimo building W. There's haircut classes for the students and it's $2 cuts.

      • +1

TAFE Ultimo building W - entrance off Broadway if I recall

I think I had one once - waited a long time, they lacked confidence, and I wasn't impressed with the result - after all they were students learning how to cut hair.

I last paid $20 for a 10-minute haircut from George St a few years ago, but was never quite happy with the result

So now milady cuts my hair to the shape I like - she takes 20-25 minutes which is a bit boring but I like the result - and save - what, now $30-40 ? - each time

in fact I recently upgraded from Remington corded hair clippers (like $19 and quieter than Wahl which sounded like a gravel crusher next my ear - offensive!)

to a battery-powered hair trimmer (around $20? - not but something like this $29 one https://www.amazon.com.au/Remington-5-In-1-Titanium-Multi-Gr…) - which is quieter again and works just fine on one charge to cut my hair

        • +3

they lacked confidence, and I wasn't impressed with the result

The difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut is …

          …. 2 weeks.

    • Oh man. I love this comment.

  • +44

Where’s the ‘$0, because follicly challenged’ option?

    • +32

      don't forget the DIYers

      • +2

Ive got both hands up for this one

      • +3

Same. Bought electric clippers about 6 years ago. Just give myself a #2 all over every month or so. Never been to barbers.

        • #2 = Shaolin monk style

        • Yeah, it's tough on Centrelink these days.

          • @Daabido: 😂 As hard as it is. Someone has to do it. All that tax payer money needs to go to booze and ciggies some how.

    • +1

hands up here too.. mums a hairdresser so free cuts for life

  • +49

Who gets a haircut every 2 weeks…? Aim for every 3 months, would save you at least $400 a year.

    • +4

      +1

I stretch mine out to every 3 months too !!! … Mainly because I work 10-12 hours, 6 days/week (so no spare time).

Never found them to charge more $$$ (even though they should, as they take longer).

      • +11

even though they should, as they take longer

That's a myth. When hair gets longer, you don't grow more strands of hair. Cutting 1cm off vs cutting 10cm off, where's the extra effort?

      • +2

Not sure what work you do but cut your hours back to live longer and enjoy life more!

      • Im surprised you have sufficient hair for regular haircuts if you’re working those hours and days, yeesh. A mildly stressful job and standard hours and days has been enough for me to thin and grey…

    • +3

Every two weeks is wild. Likely means the cut only actually looks good for a week or so after it has settled and grown in a tiny bit.

    • +1

This. Plus you get to rock 2 different looks, or 3 depending on how fast your hair grows. So win-win!

    • +1

Or at least 6 weeks - that's where I am at

    • Anything over 2 months and my hair goes wild. Every 2 weeks is crazy though.

      • I'd say 6-8 weeks is about right for most people maintaining shorter hair. I go about 6 months or so but that's because my hair is below the shoulder and keeping things frugal, would likely otherwise get it tidied quarterly.

    • Every week - but DIY head and beard. No one every compliments me on my haircut… :(

    • I saw a guy who said he got his hair cut every week - probably a young lebbo - he wanted it about 3mm long - so a week's growth would lose the look he wanted - or maybe the feel when you run your hand over it for the buzz 🤭

  • +4

    $10 at the local TAFE.

    • +4

      TAFE option saves cents, cheers!

    • For some reason I pronounced TAFE like cafe… hahah must've been the preceeding "local".

  • +14

Every 2 weeks is ridiculous. I cut mine myself about every 2-3 months. It really isn't hard. Invest in some made in USA Wahl clippers and have a crack. I do a better cut myself than many of the so called 'professionals' have in the past.

    • +8

I tried that a few times and learned that out of all the things I'm capable of, cutting my own hair is not one of them. No idea how you guys do it, I'm jealous.

To answer the poll I reckon it's $40-$50 for me now unless I go out of my way to a cheap place.

    • How do you manage the clean lines at the back of the neck and behind the ears?

      • Mirrors

      • +3

I use a tall a frame mirror and the bathroom mirror to see behind my head, then just move your arms around a little to work out which inputs give the right direction then dive in

        • +1

work out which inputs give the right direction

I wish I could go into the settings and just invert controls.

    • +11

If you’re cutting your own hair and do a better job than a pro, you’re going to some crappy professionals

      • +2

Or they have low standards of what is good to them

      • It's also about consistency, some barbers and hairdressers rush when they have a bunch of waiting clients, so to get a consistently decent cut every time is near impossible without spending a shit load of money for it.. For hair that grows quickly it's more economical to diy in one's own time, it's an art not neuro surgery, anyone can cut their own hair if you're patient and dexterous enough.

    • The game changer is the tapered clipper for left and right. Makes it much more forgiving. A pair of thinning scissors can handle the top from within.

    • I get a pretty simple cut and have done a somewhat decent job myself before. But the thing I overlooked was the cleanup and finding little hair clippings everywhere for the next few weeks. Considering I only get a cut every 2-3 months, I opt to just pay the barber.

  • +19

    Where is the $0 option?

    • +4

This! Haven't paid for haurcut for the last 20 years. #BaldHeadsMatter 😄

      • Clippers cost though… probably under a $1 / cut even on some pricier clippers.

  • +11

    I do it myself

  • +2

As much as it’s financially most sane to diy, a fresh zero fade by a barber hits the spot every time.

    • +11

I see your zero fade and raise you being bald as a cue ball that you polish in the shine-o-ball-o

    • +1

Not to mention the chit chat and 10 year old mags.

  • +17

$0 for me, wife cuts my hair

    • +3

similar, I give myself a once over with the clippers using the number 3 comb, then she comes and finishes me off just in case I've missed some bits and tidies up neck line etc
      .

      • +43

then she comes and finishes me off

I also choose this guy's wife

      • This guy laughing, whenever he sees comments about " lifetime supply" on other deals

      • +2

        True story from work colleague/me:

There was a shop in our building (ground floor) that had transformed over the years. It first started off as a souvenir shop selling Aussie tourist stuff.
Sometimes there was an older Chinese man that would just sit on a stool out the front watching people walk by. I saw nobody go in/out but wasn't really monitoring.

        That didn't really work…
So one day work mate notices a sign, $10 haircuts. Wow! He was short on time so decided to give it a go. Low standards, doesn't really care.
Walks in: Hey, I'd like a haircut please.
        confusion
People rushing around trying to find a chair and then some scissors etc. The haircut was probably what you would expect for $10.

It then became a massage shop which did not look appealing at all.

And then it closed down… The end (there was no happy ending for work colleague).

    • But what about the cost of the dinners, the movies, the flowers, the ring, not to mention the wedding itself.

      • Forget about those…..
You never break even with the nagging 😂

    • +1

Likewise. She does a great job

    • Dumb comment without the energy equipment costs

  • +4

i cut my own hair. been doing this since 2005
    it takes literally 10mins max

    • +1

Are you bald or do you just leave hair clippings all over everything after?

      • +1

        not bald.
I cut over a bathroom sink with a box to catch 90% of the hairs
Then i use a handheld vac over my body then the floor, then a wet wipe to pickup hairs off the sink that missed the box.

    • Cleaning just by itself takes more than 10 minutes. Do you just let your mum or wife clean after you?

      • not bald.
I cut over a bathroom sink with a box to catch 90% of the hairs

      • +1

        10mins cut + 10mins cleaning = 20mins total
It would take longer to travel to barber, wait, get haircut, travel home.

    • -1

Takes a min 3 hrs for me

      • Yeh. So paying roughly $50 for 2.5hr back in my day is worth it.

        • -1

But 3hrs is including shaving the balls lol

    • it takes literally 10mins max

Not including cleaning the mess in bathroom/wherever though.

      • +1

        I cut outside
        .

  • +9

    2 weeks or so.

    confiscate OP's ozbargain licence.

  • +7

Wow, even $20 every 2 weeks is a lot. I cut my own hair, been doing it for 22 years. Even assuming you were paying $15 for a haircut 22 years ago, that means I've saved around $10,000 by not being you. And currently saving $1000 per year.

    • How often do you cut your hair?
How often were you getting a haircut prior to DIY?

      • +1

I cut it about once every 2 months. However, OP has indicated he cuts his hair once every 2 weeks. So by not being him, I've saved $10,000.

        • +1

          by not being him

Gotcha. Yeah, I would hate to be him. Wasting so much money and time on primping and preening.

  • +7

Wife cuts mine every 6-8 weeks. I couldn't imagine getting a haircut every 2 weeks, what a hassle that would be.

  • Rather than going every 2 weeks to get a hair cut, go once a month but get lots cut.

    • +2

Get it all cut off for maximum value.

  • +1

I cut my own with decent Wahl clippers corded and a cordless trimmer. I am thinning on top so it's usually size 1/2 mm all over and 3mm for the eyebrows. Bushy eyebrows are ridiculous.

It costs me over $120 every time I gey my 3 kids hair done though. Zero fade, line, style. 3 or 4 years ago it would have been half that.😭

  • +1

All my local hairdressers are like $40 and none of them specialise in men's hair. I've been going to the TAFE for a $7 haircut, the wait times are way down compared to years ago, it's ran much more like a real hairdresser now. Probably varies from what city you live in. The instructor is an older gay barber like you'd hope so it might even be better than a hairdresser winging it for $40.

    • Tafe cuts sometimes take aggeees because the instructor keeps checking everything to make sure the student isn’t screwing it up. Maybe if you get an experienced student. But for me, not worth the stuff around

  • Mine went up to $35 and I haven't been in the last 12 months. I've moved to at home haircuts.

  • +4

I go once a month, and it’s $35. They do hook it up with a 10mins head massage as well

  • +3

$0 Lol, partner learnt off YouTube

Haircuts are like cake nowadays, special occasions only

  • +2

Remember Just Cuts used to be $10 walk-in with no appointment. Now. it is $40 for men's cut!

    • +1

      UnJust Inflation

    • +1

It’s Labor’s policies. Everything they do drives up business costs.

      • Can I have a "Wong" cut because of being wong is always right

  • Was paying $30 and only takes the hairdresser 15 minutes. Previously had the wife try but takes her like 45 minutes and I get impatient - not worth a divorce but price has gone up to $40 so might need to reconsider….
