And install koreader
oh? Does that work for the other devices too? I dont like the default reader, doesn't do anything about margins.
Koreader is multi reqders and platform. I have it on my android phone and my kobo. You have tons of customisations, including margins. There are lots of tutorials on YouTube on how to install it on any device. Beware, it has lots of customisations, but a lot of support online. It took me a couple of days of reading to find and fine tune all the settings to my desired experience. My next step is to configure cross-devices sync for the progress on my books between my referee and phone since Kobo doesn't allow you to do that by default with..ahem…"sideloaded" books
Does this allow you to installed libby?
Sorry, no idea, I'm mainly a kobo person
No, but if you can be bothered you can borrow digitally on your computer with Adobe Digital Editions, then remove the DRM with the DeDRM Calibre plugin.
Make sure you don't autoupdate though as the latest firmware blocked it but I believe they are close to releasing updated jailbreak.
It has been patched recently in 5.18.1 - so best to jailbreak fresh out do the box if it is of interest.
As others have mentioned, firmware 5.18.1 cannot be jail broken at this stage.
On first boot, skip setting up the WiFi. Then follow the winter break instructions, and finish with disable OTA updates or leaving it on airplane mode.
Details on how?
$295 on TGG commercial 🤔
TGG is usually srp, unless there's an actual deal
Get a Kobo colour
Has there been a Kobo sale lately, i am interested on the Kobo because of the sideloading.
Kindle also lets you sideload.
Calibre send to email or jailbreak
why jailbreak if you can use calibre?
@fredblogs: just went through the jailbreak myself. honestly, wasn't worth it. preferred the stock gui and easy enough to transfer books with calibre on stock
@belongsinforums: Can access calibre librwry or manga wirelessly
Koreader takes a bit of getting used to but its much more customisable than stock reader
@impoze: Someone needs to make a server side interface for Calibre which allows for shared web interaction.
@fredblogs: Lets you customise a lot of things and allows for wireless transfer of ebooks with calibre and drag and drop with windows explorer. Can even get it to run gameboy pokemon games.
Not many sales, and sadly, barely any second hand ones in marketplace
why Kobo over a kindle (or jailbroken kindle)?
only good reason i can think of is they don't want to support amazon, which is fair
Libby/overdrive let's you borrow ebooks from the library.
oh, didn't realise you can't borrow ebooks with a kindle
and calibre + dedrm lets you keep them. (can I say that here?)
Can't stand the weird "textured" look of the screen when reading B&W content.
Thanks, been waiting for a deal like this since my old kindle 4th gen stopped working.
It may be worth contacting Amazon - they usually give you a fairly generous discount on a new Kindle if they can see you have a broken one linked to your account.
Stacked with cashbacks - it brought the cost of my current one way down.
Feels like kindles are getting more expensive? Any new features? My 4th gen is still alive.
If anything they are getting less features as the DRM is more restrictive now than when you bought your 4th gen
I personally think 4th gen is where it's at. Mine is still alive too. The stuff that came after felt incremental and, at least for me, added little extra value.
If my 4th gen ever carked it, I think I would grab a current gen Kindle instead of a PW. The latest gen base kindle seems like the perfect update to a 4th gen P.
why not the PW? there's not much price difference…
Can this $237 used at Officeworks for price beat, like price beat a price beat?
I’ve got some officeworks gift cards to spend before end of May :(
Does this version have ads?
The one i bought from last deal here didnt specify if it had ads or not, Happily it doesnt have any, but im not sure how you tell up front.
Afaik the ads are an American thing and we don’t have them on Kindles here (so far)
Had an original Kindle a long time ago and then Kobo’s after that. Got the new Kindle recently.
Im liking the Kindle UI now, its really slick and the device doesnt crash like my Kobo’s (admittedly they a few years old now).
epub is now easy to load via calibre
I had calibre and an old kindle from 2011…. You could drag and drop ebooks via USB to your laptop. With your comment on EPUB load via calibre is it still the same? Convert to EPUB in calibre and you can drag and drop files via USB plug and play for unrestricted reading?
Sort of , you dont need to first convert to kindle format anymore, you just drag and drop as an Epub.
Afaik , it now auto coverts it to the current amazon format, but its faster and more stable because kindle directly recognises epub.
I used to get (mostly) minor formatting glitches when converting the old way.
Sorry for the stupid questions but are you saying it auto converts as in you drag and drop the EPUB into the actual kindle via USB cable directly plug and play on ones computer ?
Or that you drag it EPUB into calibre which auto changes it to kindle when sending to your kindle?
I bought a Kobo back in 2022 for that formatting issue. Everyone said use calibre but some files after converting pages would come out weird. I got fed up and decided it was far easier just obtained EPUB online and directly dropping it into Kobo. Unfortunately after low usage my Kobo has now died and the new Kobo colour Libra 2 screen is horribly different to my black and white libra 2. So I am reluctantly considering moving back to kindle.
I also need one for my old parents so wanted an easy one with no restrictions where they can USB drag and drop files in
@SaberX: That’s no direct way via usb without some software being involved.
Easiest way is probably via “send to kindle” which also has a windows app. Ive never used the app, but it looks like its very simple, just drag and drop the epub into the app and its done.
@dclee12: No direct way as in to directly drop an epub in to a Kindle to be converted ? But you can still drop converted kindle format epubs from ones computer to the kindle directly by USB right? With my old 4th gen you just copy and pasted the file into the folder location for books and it picked up. Does that still work?
Did Amazon re-allow sending files via email to kindles?
When did they stop? They have stopped allowing .mobi over email but can send .EPUB no problem.
Yep, just don't update as others mentioned, I updated mine to the latest firmware and now I can't jailbreak =(
There are so much used one on market.
Won't recommend buying brand new unless one really hates used ones.
Just searched australia on gumtree and there are only 3?
Try facebook marketplace?
Gumtree is basically dead.
Yeah between a 10" tablet and kindle…. decisions decisions.
Nice, thanks.
Also showing up on TGG site as a PriceBeat without chat.
Got one. Thanks OP!
What does jailbreaking or adding Calibre add compared to just manually uploading .epubs?
OW were happy to pricebeat this for me when i called them \o/ also was fine in store where i used the ultimate gcs for net price of ~$205. not bad!
Tried in store to price beat - no go. Sad.
thats a shame, i think the key for me was:
Do new kindles still plug and play via USB cables to laptops and allow you to drag and drop EPUB files converted into kindle formats via calibre directly onto the kindle via windows explorer ?
Or is this locked? Seems alot show the send to kindle function or talk about DRM and other issues so I was just curious if one can still sort out converting via calibre and just dragging files manually via your computer to kindle direct?
nothing changed since the last 3-6 years ? .
Picked one up.
Got it price matched at Officeworks.
$225.15
Happy days
Think the 6" kindle basic would be easier to hold in one hand
Kobo Clara has the better e-ink display.
Would end of FY deals be better than this?
You can jailbreak these quite easily which is a plus
