Reviews say a subscription is required to use the app.

That's if you are after advanced (fancier) labels with icons available on app etc
You can do your day to day labels, QR/barcodes with free version.

    • +5

More importantly these use RFID tags on the rolls and cripple the outout if you print on 3rd party labels (power is reduced to the point you basically can't see anything, yet trick it into thinking it's a Niimbot roll and they print fine)

      • +8

Sorry OP but I just don't think anyone should support printers with built-in DRM… Not to mention a bloody subscription model. It's the hallmark of an unscrupulous business that has no qualms profiting off user data. The product appears cheap because you're paying for it in different ways.

        • +2

          Agreed. Enshitification at it's finest

        • Can you enlighten me on this further pls? I just installed the app, connected via Bluetooth and printed some basic labels within few mins of unboxing.

          • @WhatsTheBigDeal: The sample rolls that came with it?

Look inside the roll and you'll see an RFID tag.

The good part is they allow the printer to know what size label is installed.

The bad part is Niimbot decided to use this as DRM as well. They forcibly cripple the output when using a roll without this RFID tag.

            • @bamzero: Ok so in terms of $ how much are we saving by switching to third party labels compared to their own brand ones?
I can see Amazon has 2x 30x50mm rolls for $30 (460 total labels).
Isn't this similar to toner for printers being locked to genuine ones via firmware upgrades etc? How is this different?
I'm new to whole label printing scene :)

              • +1

@WhatsTheBigDeal: Depends where your get your labels from.

Check the prices of 3rd party ones on AliExpress and you'll see can be quite a lot to be saved. Prob not so much if you buy labels from Amazon tho.

What Niimbot does is worse IMHO. They don't say you can't use other labels or stop it printing, they just make it look really crappy when it doesn't have to be. And it's not like toner going through a machine that could possibly cause problems as an excuse for using genuine.

          • +3

@WhatsTheBigDeal: Printers like these are designed to squeeze or coerce even more money out of their users.

Got a few spare printer rolls lying around like @SwarleyAUS? Well, you can't use any other printer rolls except NIIMBOT branded ones because they come with an RFID chip that tells the printer this is a roll sold by NIIMBOT. If you use rolls purchased from other manufacturers, this printer will simply refuse to print properly unless you trick it into thinking it is a NIIMBOT roll.

Think you can use the printer without a subscription? Well, one day the manufacturer will push an update that forces you to sign in to their app before you can start printing so they can start collecting and selling user data. They can also just as easily start demanding for paid subscriptions before you can print. One day you might find out that you can't print anything if the printer or app is not connected to the internet. This has happened time and time again with various businesses that employ such practices.

            • +2

@anonym: They are already collecting a lot data. When I got a Niimbot and discovered the RFID problem, started looking in to writing my own tags and stuff and saw how much analytics they have going on in the app. Data is written back the to RFID tag and sent back to their cloud with every print (with each roll having a unique identifier) among other things keeping track of how many labels are left on the roll.

While I was able to clone the tag, don't know what would happen when the labels remaining got down to 0 anyway, as the cloud data trumped the RFID data once it had been added to their database. Figured there is a chance it wouldn't print any more with that tag. In the end gave up, got rid of the Niimbot and got a Phomemo.

              • +1

@bamzero: A unique identifier and a print counter for each roll that is also backed up to the cloud? Yeah nah, never gonna touch another Niimbot product in my life. Good call switching to a different printer.

              • +2

@bamzero: I've been reusing RFID tags on generic rolls for over 12 months. Zero issues.

AliExpress Bundle Deals will get me genuine rolls for <$2 anyway.

                • @Clear: How do you use RFID tags on generic rolls?

                  • +2

@Metz: They're a sticker. Peel them off and stick them to the side of the generic.

                    • @Clear: Thanks. Will try this when my roll that came with the printer runout.

            • @anonym:

One day you might find out that you can't print anything if the printer or app is not connected to the internet.

I purchased an HP Laser printer last month and signed up for 6 month HP+ program. 2 weeks later, I received a free HP toner. However, I’ve since discovered that I am unable to print without an internet connection and cannot use third-party toner.

              • @jimojr: HP printers are pretty much the worst and most egregious offender in this space 😅

        • +2

… whereas I bought one of their models, it was cheap, way cheaper than DYMO of similar features, I didn't subscribe for any premium features, and I print labels for things, and it prints them and its fairly cool how its just rechargable and portable and you just bash out a label on your phone and it comes out. Sure there may be cheaper labels maybe but I just bought a bunch of their ones and given how infrequently I use it haven't had an issue yet ?

but each to their own, you can bang on about that, but honestly if they are tracking that I printed labels like "car washing" and "screws" and "cleaning" for boxes in my garage, they are very sad people and I just laugh at how useless that data would be.

          • +1

@MrFrugalSpend: I was actually thinking the same, as long as I don't print anything sensitive this does the job for my requirements - also won't be using it frequently for home use, one 230label roll would a couple of years or more for me to worry about cost of rolls. When I have to one day I'll try out what @Clear mentioned above with AliExpress.
Only thing is the 'possibility' of them forcing the subscription for even basic labels, but I reckon it is highly unlikely if they want to keep selling these to home/small office use.

            • +2

@WhatsTheBigDeal: Don't think they were sending the content of the label. Was going to say here is a sample but seems they require niimbot-user-agent now though can see the data here under "Get Rfid info" (according to that once more labels than the allowed have been printed the app wont print but I never tested myself, and Clear is saying it still works (I do remember they had an extra 20% allowance per roll)

There is also the niimblue project with webui and android app that aims to work without niimbot servers.

At the least, block niimbot-pro.cn-hangzhou.log.aliyuncs.com as there were a lot of unnecessary calls to it.

End of the day, each to their own. Just that there are other options and I find Niimbot rather sneaky about the whole thing so as you can see on every Niimbot post there's gonna be someone letting everyone know ;)

        • bloody oath

Reviews are wrong. I have many Niimbot printers including this and no subscription required. You can pay to get some custom emojis and other crap you don't need.

  • +3

Good fun these little things, app is pretty good and can generate QR codes and read off spreadsheets, if you want to do Christmas cards and have a hundred addresses it’s brilliant

  • +6

DRM built into the rolls. Reject these types of practices.

  • Anyone got a recommendation for Bluetooth 4x6 printer? Got a few rolls for nothing, so now I HAVE to buy a printer xD

    • I'm planning on getting Phomemo 241BT $136 on Amazon, and a bit cheaper on Temu.
Seems best value unless you want a higher resolution print

      • Thanks, only thing stopping me is you can't wirelessly print from PC =(

  • Anyone recommend anything else?
Wanted to make some simple labels to put on boxes. Was looking for atleast 60mm x 80mm or roughly that size

    • +1

I got a Phomemo M221, can do up to 75mm width.

Little bit more than this Niimbot but 75mm vs 50mm and can use any brand labels you like (and save labels in the app without being forced to create an account)

      Currently $70 on Amazon

      • Thanks I read what you wrote in the deal thread back in Oct last year re the M221 - I presume you still rate the unit so I just ordered one too - price seemed good. I see Phomemo have also released a new M250 model which I presume supercedes this but it doesn't appear to be available on Amazon AU yet and I'm assuming will be over $100 if and when it does so …

        • Yeh still happy with mine.

Hadn't heard of the M250 but after a quick look changes seem to be largely cosmetic, apart from an ever so slightly faster print speed of an extra 2mm/s and it weighing more.

  • I really like those embossed dynamo label makers. Can anyone recommend one? Cheers

  • I bought this a few months ago and it works really well.
Biggest hate is the app trying to shove subscriptions down my face for different fonts and certain borders etc.

  • Do these fade on the first time they go through the dishwasher?

I was deeply disappointed when I realised that the Phomemo is no replacement for a Brother P-Touch.
