Motorola Moto Tag Bluetooth Tracker: 4-Pack $165, 1-Pack $48 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ In-Store) @ Harvey Norman

150

Google launched their competitor to Apple's Find My network earlier this year.
3rd party tags have finally started being launched in Australia.

Motorola's Moto Tag is considered to be the current best offering in the Google/Android ecosystem for a few reasons:

  • UWB ready (Ultra Wide Band), when Google finally launch support for UWB over the coming months (Keep an eye on Google I/O on May 20th 2025).
All the other trackers currently launched (except Samsung SmartTag 2) don't have the UWB hardware in them.
  • Supports Apple Airtag accessories/cases, etc due to the same dimensions
  • IP67 Water Protection
  • Replaceable batteries (CR2032)
  • Bluetooth 5.4 with Bluetooth Low Energy Range of up to 100m
  • Frequent software updates via Motorola app

Moto Tag 1 Pack

RRP = $55, currently $48 (Save $7)

Moto Tag 4 Pack (x2 Blue, x2 Green)

RRP = $179, currently $165 (Save $14)

Top tip:

It's worth noting that by default Google's find my settings on android devices are very restrictive, where it will only work in high traffic area's. It is recommended you change your settings to 'With network in all areas' under the 'Find your device' settings option on all Android devices. The more android users that do this, the more accurate the Google find my device network will function. Sucks that these are exclusive to Harvey Norman in Australia (hence barely any discount/deals).

      Yeah agreed it sucks.
If Google release their own 'Pixel' branded trackers it could help spur prices downwards.

Compared to Apple Airtags they are priced roughly around the same money.

    • Bought my kid a $250 phone 2 weeks ago and they gave me one of these for free which was nice.

    • no deals is incorrect, had free MotoTag with any android phone over $199 like a couple weeks back

  • +4

I've heard pretty good reviews on these. Pretty similar tracking to AirTags.

Fingers crossed that UWB gets turned on at I/O or Google release their own version. And that the default setting becomes 'with network in all areas.'

    • Fingers crossed this doesn't turn out to be a Google fad - I'm looking at you Nest

      • +1

Rumors seem to indicate (or people hoping?) that at Google I/O on May 20th, that Google will announce new Nest hardware.
It seems in alot of global markets (including Australia) supply has dried up completely of:

        • Google Nest Hub (Smart Display)
        • Google Nest Hub Max (Smart Display)
        • Google Nest Mini (Speaker)
        • Google Nest Audio (Speaker)
        • Google Nest Protect (Fire Alarm)

And the Google Nest Cam's (Indoor, Outdoor and Floodlight) still seem to have stock around, but its a lot harder to come by.
So seems to indicate a refresh is right around the corner.

  • I have tried the MiLi tags and I think that they seem to work OK, you do need to be in an area where there are likley to be many andorid users passing nearby. I have not had any major issue with these tags They sell on Aliexpress for approx $25.00 -$30.00 each. Make sure that your order the correct tag as some are only for applie and others are just Bluetooth tags.

I have ordered another make from AliExpress just to trial called "SMART TAG" for android, so hoping this works the same.

It appears that there is new stuff comming every month from china in this space

The MiLi tags unfortunately don't have any UWB hardware inside them. So you wont be able to do the more accurate location tracking that UWB brings.
These Moto Tags have UWB support built in for whenver Google enable this (apparently coming very soon)

      • You'll also need a phone that supports it though. If you don't, no sense in buying the more expensive trackers.

  • Will these work for air travel luggage tracking?

    • +2

      Yes.

Aslong as their are Android smart phones nearby (they are everywhere), these tags will leverage that to send you their location.
Recent online reviews from early 2025 seem to indicate that Google has been putting alot of work behind the scenes into the Google Find My Device network to have it work better then when it launched.

There are still some gaps that they have hinted will be fixed very soon (implying Google I/O 2025 on May 20th).

These MotoTags have the UWB (Ultra-Wide Band) hardware already installed so they are 'future proof' for when Google enable this.

  • Guess I'm hoping my SmartTag2's remain relevant… can't complain when I got my 4 pack for ~$80.

But looking forward to seeing how these go.

  • Happy with the one I got from the first "deal" but now I know only Harvey stocks them, I'm just gonna view this as the true RRP.

That being said, I've just bought a couple of far cheaper smart tags from Aliexpress so I'm going to see how those go rather than buy two more of these just yet.

  • I've heard mixed reviews on these? mainly due to the fact that googles find my network is opt-in only

    • Not 100% accurate.
The Google Find My Device network is enabled by default on all android devices and the default setting is 'with network in high traffic areas'
The enhanced mode called 'with network in ALL areas' is opt-in.

There has been some further updates by Google over the last few months that have improved on the issues they had at launch, and some people doing reviews have backed this up. However there is still room for improvement. There is talk online that at Google I/O on May 20th they will enabled UWB support (which the Moto Tag's support) along with some other enhancements.

    • Yes I was looking at these and they sound completely useless. The only people that would know to turn it on would be people with the tags meaning almost nobody right now. Even of those people not everyone will turn it on.

Went with Samsung as I'm not with Apple it seems to have good coverage in all areas

  • +1

Moto knew what they were doing making sure these fit airtag accessories. Well played Moto.

  • More expensive than AirTags but worse performance…

    • +1

Not being restricted to a single company's phone is a pretty big benefit.

      • But I see AirTags go on sale for as low as $90 for 4. Is it really a $75 benefit?

I'd rather pay $90 now and another $90 if I decide to change brands, coming out at $180, than $165 now just in case I change brands and want to save $15.

Especially considering that the tracking performance is much worse.

I'm an Android user (Samsung as my main, Motorola is what I'm typing on now) so I'm not biased towards Apple, I just think this pricing is ridiculous.

        • I think it's less about changing brands and more about the size of the network. The current Android network is crippled, but has the potential to be very large. I agree if they never fix it they've lost the game, hopefully they can see this.

The Chinese brand tags are only about $20 each. It's literally a coin battery and a bit of BLE circuitry, no need to be expensive.

          • @xmail: Chinese brand tags are about $3 and they work well. If you don't need UWB they're perfectly good. Downside is you need an expensive iPhone or iPad to use it.

But coverage is everything… if Google doesn't have that it's useless even if it's usable from a cheap Android phone

          • @xmail: It seems like you mostly agree with me about the current situation except that you conclude it's worth paying nearly double Apple's price in the hopes things improve… I don't think that's sensible.

The product is crap now so it should be cheaper now. If it improves then charging more might be justified.

UWB should be turned on this month according to Google.

Great news for the Mototags. I'll still wait to see if Google announces it's own tag at I/O.

  • For future readers, UWB has been rolled out in the latest update for these tags.
