Damn bro those bezels are from the 2000s

    • I thought it was a ASUS eeePC netbook.

Oops, you forgot to mention the display: Maximum Resolution 1366 x 768

    • I could tell it was potato from just looking at the image pulled through on the link

Tossing up between one of these versus a tablet for a young kid on long haul flights and just general travelling. They seem quite tough, probably handle some abuse versus a Lenovo M9 or M10/11 tablet. 768x resolution annoys me… I doubt it will annoy my daughter though 😂

      Go the tablet 100%.

They'll run android which is designed for a touchscreen and full of apps, Windows as an alternative isn't much fun.

tablet are better suited for kids

Parents thinking this is why Gen Z and Gen Alpha are absolutely clueless with technology.

Give them a real computer. Not a brainrot iPad.

This ain't a real computer either, not in 2025 imo

@AeymothSky: I think I disagree? I have Ubuntu on mine. Mine is an older version from 2016 but I use it regularly for hacking around with vscode. Is that ok?

            • +1

@magnitude: hey i mean if it works for you ig

i just feel these devices are too old, and are approaching e-waste levels if running latest os / or having a poor battery inside.

              • @AeymothSky: I run Ubuntu 24.04, latest version. Does fine with Chrome etc. My battery died last year, I just replaced it yesterday - cost me $40 from ebay. It's beautiful now, i'll probably use it for a few years now. Computers are plenty fast for many things, i'm typing this comment on a 50 inch 4k screen with a N100 minipc, which is my daily driver. It replaced my $5k desktop with a stupidly powerful cpu and gpu and i've not looked back.

              • @AeymothSky: Sure, if you are only thinking Windows? There are plenty of modern OS that will run great on this.

                • @5kbjvb3o: though if brought for like a highschool kid,

atleast where i went they expect you to run windows / mac

can't authenticate on the school wifi without their certificates etc

        • Parents thinking this is why Gen Z and Gen Alpha are absolutely clueless with technology.

Each generation are clueless about the next gen's tech…

The modern pc for gen Z and gen alpha is the phone and tablet (+ social media etc)
and they are really good at it.

Also why do you assume the parents of Gen Z and Gen Alpha are any more knowledgeable about their tech (e.g. know how to fix the PC/laptop)?

Like with any gen, it is about each individual..
Some individual are knowledgeable in tech, cos they are interested in it and also studied personally or professionally.
Just look at your own gen, there are probably heaps of people in your gen that don't know how to fix their PC, while you might (if PC is hobby).

Give them a real computer. Not a brainrot iPad.

I think you missed part "young kid on long haul flights and just general travelling"

The reality is most kids and even adults nowadays just use computers to browse web, watch youtube / video streaming and some light gaming.
Also what makes you think most people don't already have a pc or laptop at home…

This is about what is suitable for a kid to use while travelling..
Tablets are just better suited in turns, UI, battery life, and to do those activities (browse web, watch youtube / video streaming) while travelling on flight, car etc.
Do you want the little kid to use a heavier laptop with keyboard while navigating a crappier (windows OS) UI to do those things?

Laptop has it's place (if required) for school or work etc..

Except the next gen’s tech is iPads. Devices even the oldest Baby Boomer can use.

Yet when it comes to the real world they struggle to use a real PC to do real tasks that actually contribute to society.

How can it be a ThinkPad with no clitmouse?

  • +1

I have one of these (older version). Just bought a brand new battery. I love it, gives me more joy than anything else I own tech wise. They're rugged and take a few knocks, mine lives in a backpack in the car.

  • These are part of the Lenovo 'education' range and are a) rugged by design and b) low power for peak battery life, and in return you trade have a lower power CPU, HD resolution and a 1990's era bezel

They are absolutely, and only, 'good enough'. They're perfect for kids because unlike a touch-screen tablet, these will handle some mistreatment, while also being a 'proper' computer experience. For gaming they'll run Roblox for the kids also your favourite SNES emulator.

    • windows OS still sucks for touch screen compared to tablets

kids are also used to the tablet UI, even a small toddler knows how to swipe and launch apps

  • Be sure to lookup benchmarks on this CPU. A decade old desktop will benchmark significantly higher. They are basically ex-lower primary school computers made for kids who don't know what PC is meant to perform like.

Whatever you plan to do with it, I doubt it will be fit for purpose.

  • Every generation
    Blames the one before
    And all of their frustrations
    Come beating on your door
