PS5 Pro doesn't seem to be going on discount very often, so when I saw this $100 off coupon, I jumped on it.

People will laugh and say 'what bad value' yet buy a mid range 5060ti GPU, which is 1 part of a PC for $900, let alone the rest of the PC + Peripherals

    • +8

And use the $100 savings to buy 32' inches Kogan TV aye?

    • +5

As prices have been increasing recently, it's more likely to go up than down.

like you can play flight simulator on this PRO Playstation…

      • +4

I mean you can play it on an Xbox Series S…

        • +1

that's not the point…PC can do a lot more than just gaming…

          • +6

@HD9990: if you're not video editing, buy a $149 i5/16gb ram 8th gen mini PC from ebay and it can do everything other than game or edit.

            • +3

@Mortgagetightass: obviously you missed quite a bit about how much PC can do…

            • -1

@Mortgagetightass: You can also just connect your phone to a monitor, get a wireless mouse a keyboard, and you can basically do anything except serious gaming and video editing. It's a very broad category of products if we start talking about watching YouTube and typing emails.

flight simulator will be ported to ps5 soon

        • Ran a quick search, couldn't find anything.

Do you have a source on that?

Forza was recently made available on the PS5

          • +4

@Barry off EastEnders: Whilst I think they are assuming, Microsoft do seem to be porting pretty much all their IP over to Playstation, so I wouldn't be surprised if it happens.

    • +9

Not really good value considering the disc version of the OG ps5 had a disc drive and stand come with it for 799

      • +13

the bigger hard drive(2TB) alone is worth probably $200-$300, then you have faster ram, 50% more GPU compute units, wifi 7, each to their own i guess, but if i didn't own ps5 console at all, no way would i not pay $300-$400 for an upgraded model

        • +1

if you want the disc version with stand though its a 500 dollar upgrade which is not worth it

          • +3

@kungfuman: i got my stand for $17 on ebay, disc drive is $124, so more like $450, and like i said, a hdd is $300, so you are paying $150 for faster ram, extra ram, better future proof wifi, 50% more teraflops, basically plays what games look like on quality mode on base ps5 at 60fps instead of an eye jarring 30fps, it's a no brainer, i have both consoles, the pro is the better choice(if you haven't already got a base ps5), not to mention, that obviously the way you buy this console is when JB Hifi have their $1200 gift card phone deal, so you end up getting the console and disc drive for $900 out of pocket)

            • +7

@Qazxswec: You're wasting your breath mate, some here simply can not comprehend spending more than the absolute minimum on anything.

    • +1

      50 series overpriced.
compare to 4060ti which are just over $600 is a better comparison.

    • -1

PlayStation players are so numb to the price of ps+ they forget how much they would save if they just bought a pc and controller

      • +7

        I don’t even have PS+, I just have the PS5 for disc-based games.
If a game is digital only, I wait until it either gets a PS5 or Switch physical release, or a deep discount on PC storefronts.

    • -1

You have to pay for PS+ to play online. You don't with Steam.
Also, PC games are generally cheaper when on sale.

      • Not only cheaper on PC but there are free games to claim monthly.

      • +2

Or free, if you know where to look…

        • +1

          High seas, or Epic.

          • +1

@stephcurry: There’s a reason why poor countries swear by PC gaming.
High upfront cost and digital games that can’t be resold don’t matter when you can find the games for free anyway.

    • +16

Or buy a standard PS5 with slight graphical downgrade and save 100's.

      • -4

Or buy a PS5 pro with slight graphical upgrades (or the same gfx but double the frame rate) and double the storage for a few hundred $ more (and better resale down the track), the choice is yours…

    • +2

Considering you can play all games on a cheaper console and not have to spend extra on a disc drive, yes it's bad value. Especially as differences are minimal for most games. Paying 50% more for a 10% bump in 10% of games hardly seems good value.

Most reviews say the pro isn't worth it for the majority. If you need the best of the best or just have money to blow then power to you though.

      • +7

It's absolutely not a "10% bump". It's quite literally a 100% bump in some games when it comes to frame rate, i.e quality mode becomes 60fps instead of 30fps on the base model.

        • Yes if you want to focus on a specific aspect I'm sure you could even find 200% increases.

But for the majority of people and overall it's about 10%.

          • +3

            @DingoBilly:

But for the majority of people and overall it's about 10%.

Where are you pulling this percentage from?

        • +4

          Brother that's not a 100% increase. That's nonlinear - no one would say 240fps is 100% better than 120fps.

Most users have no problem with 30fps, so the gain is marginal on average.

          The 10% figure is reasonable.

          • -4

@Wolfenstein98k: lol, what are you talking about, 30fps is basically unplayable, every time you turn around it is jittery, not only is it harsh on your eyes, it is completely immersion breaking, and your example is way off, 120fps is already buttery smooth so yes of course no one will say 240fps is twice as good, that part is correct, but going from 30fps to 60fps is going from jittery and harsh to nice and smooth, you're right, it's not 100% better, it is like 300% better, as far as your eyes are concerned anyway, 30fps looks ok as you are running forward or slowly turning, but as soon as you pan the camera at anything more than a crawl, it is horrendous, 10%, lol

            • +4

@Qazxswec: Just wrong. Most games were 30fps, many still are, most people never mention it.

The median gamer doesn't even know what the numbers mean, and most games don't play in a way where you'd notice it.

              • +1

@Wolfenstein98k: i used to not think too much about it before i experienced games with 60fps, but once you get used to 60 then you try to go back to 30, it really is a terrible experience, every 1st person or 3rd person game(most games) you have to notice it , as soon as you turn the right joystick, it stutters, people who have only played games in 30fps may just be used to it and accept this as normal, but once you go 60 or even 120, it is very jarring going back to 30, each to their own though i guess

            • @Qazxswec: I personally can't tell the difference between 30 and 60 fps. I prefer a higher resolution than more fps.

              • +4

@DingoBilly: i am all for good resolution as well, but 30 fps makes everything look like it is vibrating or shaking which basically makes the whole screen blurry when panning the camera aka turning with the right joystick, look at this video 30fps vs 60fps notice the top circle is very smooth(60fps), now the middle circle(30fps) is very shaky, especially the left and right sides of it, making it blurry and "not really a circle", now imagine that same effect but with everything on your screen, trees, columns, cars, anything, it all starts to vibrates and becomes shaky making the overall graphics much worse, basically making it so that resolution mode only looks better while running forward or turning very slowly, as soon as you jerk the camera, it is terrible

    • +4

I feel like the poor value is mostly when talking about upgrading from the base PS5, the differences seem negligible

    • +3

2020 PS5 disc version came with a disc drive and a stand - released at $799

      2025 PS5 Pro (no disc drive or stand additional cost) 124+50 = 174 additional cost so 1099.95 + $9.95 + 174 = $1283

      so…… 799 vs 1283…..

      • It actually released at $749, then the price increased by $50 in 2022, and now ANOTHER price increase by $30 this year.
Obviously the biggest culprits were rampant post-COVID inflation, supply chain constraints and TSMC increasing their prices to secure the bag for its shareholders and the rest of Taiwan. But then again, the PS5 Pro has no business costing $1199 WITHOUT the disc drive.

Give me the PS5 pro WITH the disc drive for $1099 MAXIMUM, and I might consider it.

        • Remember when consoles would get cheaper as they got later in their life cycle?

          • @qtr pounder: Exactly. But then inflation happened and TSMC increased their prices, so perhaps the console makers should take a lesson from Nintendo and go for the cheapest node possible.
At least they don’t have to actually raise the price every time an economic shock happens.

    • +8

      Fit girl disagrees

    • +1

      Isn't the PS5 Pro closer to a $400 4060/7600?

      • +9

PS5 Pro GPU capability is in the realm of the RX 6800 / RX 7700XT / RTX 3080 / RTX 4070 type of zone.

However, the benefit for developers is that they can target an exact configuration and pre-compile all of the necessary shaders etc, which can lead to a smoother gameplay experience in practice compared to an equivalently powered standalone GPU in a custom PC build.

    • +2

I would suggest they are both bad value.

    • +1

So over the false equivalence of PC vs Console arguments.

    • Yes but imagine how much more games are available to you on PC, and they are usually at cheaper price compared to console games, which are usually more expensive compared to pc games, and don't forget pc games often have more sale.

Forget about hardware price, you're also saving money in the long run from game price alone, and you dont have to buy new console just because the console suddenly decide that they want to milk money from consumer by releasing new console forcing all the new games in the new console (plus backward compatibility can be nightmare at times)

Yes, pc is not plug and play in general, but there's also steam deck and the alikes as well that tackles this

      • +1

If you buy disc versions, you can resell them for a small loss $10-20. So you're paying at most around $20 for brand new games. Cant do that with PC, have to pay full price.

    • +8

I've saved thousands pirating games, the pc pays for itself.

      laughs in PCMR

    • no spoilers or fact checking please

    • +1

There are no good options at all.
Neither PlayStation nor Xbox have acquitted themselves this generation with almost every console release of note making it to PC and everything native to PC available on consoles going on equal or deeper discounts on PC even without considering PC bundles.
On the PC side of the argument it's impossible to recommend a gpu from this generation or last generation. Nvidia has prescalped everything for your convenience and with TSMC being the only show in town for manufacturing AMD has no route to compete on volume if they even want to leaving inflated card prices while Intel remains a non entity.
The worst part is I suspect we are at least two gpu gens off having competitive alternative manufacturers as although there are various nascent projects in the EU, USA and Asia teething issues have been insurmountable on new nodes even for TSMC which has a national security interest in successful development and implementation.

Hopefully it shakes out sooner rather than later.

      • Need AMD and Intel Arc to step up and fill the void.

    • Same price as the PS3 on release day ?

      • +1

PS3 60GB was $999 RRP on release in Australia in 2007. From memory the 20GB model was $829.

    • Who'd buy that cripple card when you can get a B580 for like $400?

    • I upvoted your comment, because I partially agree.

But a PC is so much more than a console.

You have unlimited possibilities to use a PC for.

    • And even that you still don't get Copilot+

Not buying a DIY until they sort that shit out

Pretty common $100 discount for eBay Plus members.

    I'm in at under $1,000.

    • +1

I've been keeping my eyes open for a while. My other option was to finance it at Vodafone for $33.33 per month over 36 months - https://www.vodafone.com.au/accessories/playstation5 - but I decided that $100 off RRP was good enough to bite.

      • +13

Just financed my burrito bowl last night and reached my afterpay limit, otherwise would’ve jumped on the voda deal

        • You are such a female dog

        • +4

I enjoy BNPL Burrito Bowls as much as the next hombre, but snark aside, it would actually be financially advantageous to finance a $1200 item (that I was going to buy anyway) at 0% interest for $33.33/month over 36 months, as opposed to paying the full amount up-front.

When discounted for the present rate of inflation (3%) - financing the item over 3 years it ends up being a saving of approximately $55 purchasing power in today's dollars.

Obviously, with a $100 discount - it does make sense to purchase it outright - for a total net saving of $45 over the financed option. But otherwise, a $55 saving through the power of inflation would be nothing to sneeze at.

          • +1

@Gamer Dad Reviews: Totally fair - and no snark intended on my end either, my comment was in jest. I completely agree with your point, taking advantage of 0% financing in an inflationary environment is a good deal.

  • +11

Mine showing a code SSNOW that works for $100 off for regular/ non plussed members? Great price. Go for it I reckon with recent price hikes on base.

  • +8

[Clears throat] Well, I had no idea the RRP on these was so high! Wow.

    • +8

Why did you clear your throat?

      • -5

In converation, it's an indicator of surprise, shock or discomfort. Like I said, I was surprised/shocked at the RRP on this, I know this is the pro (not the base) but still.

    • Which generation are you from that you assumed the RRP would be lower?

      • +2

A 1 slaps Nillionaire around a bit with a large trout.

        • If that doesn't answer your question, I'll just say, "I am OLD"

In '85, the NES was $199, even inflation adjusted that's more like $700 now ( link ), so $1,200 feels like a lot. Yes, the whole thing is much more complicated than price but that is all we are discussing here.

        • Pretty sure my mates Commodore 64 was $129 and that was way expensive compared to my donkey kong handheld at $35.
And PS5 digital was $629 last week at the GG and Amazon .
Games are the sticking point now when Returnal is $109 3+years later.

    • +3

Me too! I started to do some research earlier in the year when I was under the impression GTA6 will launch in 2025. Was shocked at the price.
Might start keeping an eye out on shopback etc to find the best way to get one.

      • +3

At this rate the PS6 will be out before GTA 6!

  • +8

I got a Pro for Christmas and love it. The console is totally silent even under load and I've never experienced any lagspikes or frame drops. It's way too expensive and I still need to buy a bloody disc drive, but operationally they're great and complement high quality TVs beautifully.

    • +17

Totally silent because of no disc drive

      • +1

It certainly helps - but the fan on the OG also ramps up a LOT that hasn't happened once yet on mine.

        • but the fan on the OG also ramps up a LOT

          Sound like a dust issue
Try vacuum or if fan is looking bad/ rusted - replace

I faced this on my launch OG ps5 last year) despite being well maintained and vaccumed - the metal bits rusted due to the humidity in my area) - and it’s

    • +4

Don't have the pro but +1 on how gorgeous the PS5 looks on a quality OLED.

    • +1

From all the reports of Reddit (basically everyone that owns one) is that the PRO is louder then the OG when playing games but quieter then the slim

The OG was quiet on PS4 games but when playing on the pro it doesn’t matter what it is PS4 PS5 indie game it gets the fans going

It’s just like the PS4 PRO and loud compared to OG

In ideal the pro is quieter then any PS5

PRO is great tho just wish PlayStation would stop using Gloss Black plastic on their consoles as it scratches just by looking at it

  • +8

    Looks at $1099
Looks at the so called upgrades over base ps5

At this rate they’d have to pay me to watch out for the zoomed in detailed leaves this ‘pro’ brings

    one lol ✌️

    • Also no disc drive in that cost 😱🥲

      🏃‍♂️💨💨💨💨

      • +2

this or mario kart world switch 2 bundle for $769 hmm

    • +1

      Why not both? j/k

Just decide which games offer you prefer, Sony or Nintendo, if first party Nintendo games aren't essential for you then go the PS5.

    • +3

Build a mid range PC with an Intel GPU like the B580 to bypass the insane nvidia and slightly les worse AMD GPU prices. Then get the switch 2. Lots of Sony games are now available on PC anyway

    • this or mario kart world switch 2 bundle for $769 hmm

      Switch 2 bundle any day of the 12 day week. (Yes twelve days - M T W T F S S & V A L U E - )

    • +1

I’m avoiding switch for 6 months or so to see if drift issues are fixed or not.

      • -1

I'll be waiting for the Switch 2 OLED, drift should be fixed by then.
I'm in no rush because I got a huge backlog of PS4, PS5 and Switch games! 😫
