Even the newly released Sony WH-1000XM6 is way cheaper than this. Who would buy this instead?
These could be priced similarly if Apple wasn't obsessed with metal.
Audeze Maxwells are mostly metal, and >$300 less than this…plus they're probably better that these airpods
Maxwell are very good but they're not noise cancelling

Still, processing aside it only would account for around $60 of yhe price with apples scale. The simple fact is that it is apple, and they get away with 60% higher profit margins than competitors.
People that are invested in the Apple ecosystem and care about things like the seamless auto-switching between devices.
If you go to an airport or university campus, you'll easily notice these are the second most popular headphones after the Sony XMs.
Maybe do a quick OzBargain item search before claiming ATL

Compared to the expensive sony and Bose options they really do feel heavy, though they still weren't bad i don't think. They did apply too much pressure for my liking, and despite the noise cancelling being good i find they are terrible for impact sounds - like walking

This is true. But OP didn't specify ATL for airpods max USB-C so I chimed in. Also as other people have linked in the comments, There are currently cheaper prices for the USB-C Variant.

Not even close to an ATL, was as low as $600ish sold by Amazon back in 2021/2022, might've been even lower on various ebay sales.

If you’re willing to pay several hundred more for a connector, it’s probably time you got off this website.
Tech also shouldn’t be expected to follow the same pricing trends as products at your local supermarket. A loaf of bread will forever just be a loaf of bread. It’s inevitable the same product will eventually increase in price due to various circumstances.
A tech product that’s more than 5 years old, especially something with a battery that will make it obsolete eventually, should only ever trend downwards.
If you don’t have money to buy, just stay silence and look at something else.

@Be careful: I know how economic works. Why people complain grocery price goes up but never complain how their income goes up as well. Nowadays $100,000 becomes a middle class income so don’t expect grocery price to stay the same. If something is too expensive for you, that means it is not made for you. No point to keep complaining just buy something that suit you budget. Easy.
