    Search Brave browser

agreed but if you add this to ipad / iphone it will block ads in other apps not just browser ads

      • +2

Free tier of the NextDNS app covers most users.

        • do you have rough stats of normal usage (web browsing, facebook, youtube, etc)?

free plan have 300k dns queries a month. I wonder if that would be enough

          • @bheart: Over the last 90 days, my iPhone has made 790K DNS queries of which 21% were blocked. And it is 255K over the last 30 days, with 19.5% blocked. I do not use Instagram, facebook, snapchat, tiktok, etc, just reddit (on safari). With heavy socials usage, the device might exceed 300K monthly

        • NextDNS is just a dns blocker. Adguard is more powerful. I combine both of them by using Adguard + NextDNS as the DNS used by Adguard.

    • +1

Don't like their push into cryto garbage. I don't need that in a browser. Just use Firefox, or Zen if you want a fresh interface (note Zen doesn't have DRM support).

  • -1

Does it work on Android tablets?

    • Yass

    • +1

oh yeah, its a must for any android device. apart from stopping CR/SB/TCB from tracking it does an amazing job at blocking pop-ups, ads, etc.

  • Does this stop all those add that popup when the kids are playing add supported games?

    • +4

yes but some apps dont like it and stop loading the rest of the game

      • Even when it works it may not be the result you were after. I’ve had apps with full screen videos ads, where the video will be blocked but what you get is a 30 second black screen, because the app is still hard coded with a wait period that would match the length of the ad. Whether looking at a black screen or actually getting the ad is better or worse becomes a bit debatable then (although at least it saves mobile data).

  • After numerous past deals for this, I still don't know the advantages of it over a combination of the Brave browser and uBlock Origin extension.

    • +3

Brave browser and uBlock Origin extension are only for web browsing, it doesnt cover other 3rd party apps

    • -1

does that work on IOS/Android devices?

  • does it work on YouTube?

    • It's been a while since I started using YT premium, but last time I checked it worked on PC browsers, but did not work on mobile app

    • I believe the Google cat ate that mouse.

    • Free version on ios does browser youtube

    • +2

Look into YouTube vanced or smart tube

    • It contains a YouTube player that removes adverts. I dont play many YouTube videos, only used it once. You find the video in YouTube and then share the link to the Adguard app and it plays in their player with no ads.

  • +1

Bought this a while ago, used it for a month and it broke many apps. Tried customisations, adjustments and other things and nothing worked well enough. A few months ago started using Rethink, which is free, and has worked wonderfully so far

  • Does anyone know the way to keep it up on background with CN rom based Android machine? I have it installed on my family member's Lenovo Y700 (1st gen) and it always terminates adguard when I close all the apps via that background apps thingy :/

  • +1

Is adguard planning to sell itself soon, and then the new owners don't realise they were also buying up all liabilities, then deciding to cancel all lifetime access users, to safe and earn more money?

    https://www.wired.com/story/vpnsecure-canceled-all-lifetime-…

    • They’ve been offering this sort of promotion for probably over a decade now.

Maybe one day they will, but this isn’t a sudden change in strategy.

    • +5

Umm there's a native app in Android which blocks ad system-wide. Browser independent. Maybe spend 2 mins learning about the app before negging?

      • -3

That is not downloaded from the Play Store, which I can live with, but also requires to create a "local" VPN on the device, which is then in conflict and shuttng down with my already running VPN.

That is also not mentioned anywhere in this deal or thw product page.

        • perhaps the app is intended for the standard user that doesnt use anything else like vpn etc,

          • -1

@johnfuller: Hence my "negative" as the custom dedicated VPN requirement is not mentioned anywhere on the product page. But I would also disagree that the "standard" user doesn't know what a VPN is or doesn't run one. It's pretty mainstream these day.

        • right so you didn't even do basic research before buying something. Yep definitely the apps fault.

          • +1

@M00Cow: "Designed for both Android and iOS operating systems, AdGuard is a versatile software that works seamlessly on your smartphones and mobile computers."

I would expect important information like "you need to download a non play store app and run a dedicated VPN (which will disable any other VPN running") listed somewhere under the "requirements".

    • +5

      get the android app ffs
      what a shit neg

      • -1

As per my previous comment, that android app needs a VPN. I already have and run a different VPN. If I don't shut down my one, this crap doesn't work. I would say that's a pretty important piece of information to mention. I'm not "blaming" the OP, but the product page also doesn't mention it anywhere (nor the seperate download on non play store app requirement). The neg is for lack of information thy might affect quite a large number of users.

        • Not sure if neg worthy, but yeah the whole “trust us bro it’s a fake VPN not collecting data” thing is shit.

I really don’t get why people continue to use this when things like NextDNS and ControlD exist where all you need to do is change DNS servers.

          • @PainToad: “I really don’t get why people continue to use this when things like NextDNS and ControlD”

Probably a preference to not have the DNS processed by those companies which has its own element of “trust us”.

But I do like ControlD myself.

            • @Smigit: You do realise that the reason AdGuard needs a VPN is because it's taking control of DNS lookups.

        • -1

they also have a VPN which doubles as an adblocker.

But there is a method to get it working with another VPN via proxy mode, but it'd take at least 2 mins of reading, so beyond your abilities.

          • +1

@M00Cow: I don't want their VPN, thank you. If I knew I need their VPN and can't use mine, I wouldn't get it. As I said I neg the deal as the product page is not clear about that and it's a warning to anyone else running some other VPN.

Jumping through hoops to make it work kind of kills the "AdGuard is a versatile software that works seamlessly on your smartphones and mobile computers." for me.

        • It doesn't need a VPN - according to its FAQs page, it "uses a so-called local VPN to block ads on non-rooted devices." Which is what a lot of adblocking apps use, so it's nothing unusual in that sense.

If you want to run an actual VPN at the same time that's not possible (unless you buy their VPN service, which I'm not going to do). But if you're simply looking to block ads then in my experience with the app it absolutely works just fine.

          • @punkindrublic:

If you want to run an actual VPN at the same time that's not possible

And that is exactly the problem, that it's not clearly (or actually in any way) pointed out on the link/product page so you don't know the limitations and requirements BEFORE buying the product. You only find out later. If it's advertised as "it seamlessly works on your phone and blocks ads" then I expect it to do that, without disabling other apps/functionality on my phone.

My negative vote was a "buyer beware" warning, but looking at the backlash I guess I was wrong to do it because I was somehow supposed to know something that is NOT written on the product page.

OzB has gone full on Reddit.

I have been using adguard for the past years. I mainly use it on my phone and my levono tablet.
The app generally works well. But the user needs certain troubleshooting capability in order to deal with the randoms. e.g.
    1. The app sometimes shuts off on my Pixel 7. My phone will tell me about it and all it takes is to start the app again. But it's annoying that it doesn't self reboot. I have checked battery optimisation settings and made sure the phone is not shutting down the app iteself. So far a minor inconvenience
    2. The app doesn't work with some apps. (last one I experienced was Medibank private). It blocked certain traffic causing Medibank private app fail to start or the digital card fails to beep. All it takes is to go to Adguard and stop routing traffic through Adguard for the affected apps. But you will need to remember that when an app suddently doesn't work properly.
    3. In terms of dealing with Youtube, Google services, and other ads provider, yes it's a cat and mouse game. It works until Google brings another new way of avoiding it. But Adguard is considered as an "active mouse" so sooner or later it'll start blocking ads again (right now Adguard works on Youtube)

I have tried to install this on my mom's device and eventually she doesn't want it because I don't have time to constantly tune her experience with her phone and the risk of app not working when she needs it is not worth the trouble.

EDIT: FYI for those who has synology or some kind of server setup, AdGuard Home is also a great option if you just want to block all ads at the router level. But again you will need to constantly check family member's experience to see if something that's not meant to be blocked.

  • I don't know where all the hate is coming from, it's a pretty good adblocker for the price. It crashes on occasion (usually overnight while charging) and needs to have whitelisting set up for some apps, but overall it works well across my phone, PC, etc.

    • +1

Hate? People are suggesting better options…

It crashes on occasion (usually overnight while charging)

If you used an DNS based option, there would be nothing to crash.

      • All I see in terms of alternatives are 'Brave Browser' and 'uBlock Origin', which are great … if you want to block ads on your browser only and not in any of the apps that you might use. Or Pi Hole, which is great … if you'd rather buy a Raspberry Pi and spend a whole lot of time setting the whole thing up … for it to only work on your home network and not while you're out and about.

        • +1

I really don’t get why people continue to use this when things like NextDNS and ControlD exist where all you need to do is change DNS servers.

Yeah except the alternatives I suggested have all the advantages of Pihole with none of the negatives you said. The services are hosted, so no setting up (besides setting a DNS server) and works on any network.

  • Pi-Hole, all the way!

  • Haven't looked into a comparison but keen to know - How does AdGuard compare to NextDNS?

Has anybody used both and can vouch for one or the other?

    • I use both. NextDNS and any other DNS that have adblocking capability has more limitations in blocking ads. That's why I use Adguard app but put my custom NextDNS as the DNS in Adguard app, so my Adguard uses NextDNS as the default DNS. Double protection 🤷

Certain things that cannot be blocked by NextDNS, can be blocked by Adguard.

  • I know this is ~$25 and for a lifetime for that, but what this does which AdGuard Home doesn't do? I use AG Home and it is good because I don't need to install on every devices. So I am genuinely wondering what are the advantages using this as compared to AG Home? Thanks.

    • I haven't used AdGuard Home before, but isn't AdGuard Home only for your network at your place just like the name suggests? With AdGuard app itself I can travel and connect to any network whilst it running locally on my machine.

      • That's correct … and I'm sorry I wasn't clear about that … I meant the differences in functionality … for my mobile (when I am not home), I use AG private DNS which has the free plan.

  • I’m trying to associate the license key with my account but after logging in getting error something went wrong. Is anyone else having same issue

I don't want to pay for YT premium, is there any adblock which might work in blocking ads in Youtube videos.

  • -2

I am the minority that likes ads. Found many useful information/deals. I just can't stand in-video ads, so I bought Youtube Premium.

  • They add a tax a millisecond before you click pay. Super dodgy practise per AU standards, almost expected from a US company. Your final total, and payable is a tad more.
