$25 bucks is ridiculous. Makes this deal good though.

    • +21

      Even $15 is ridiculous.

      • +7

Used to be circa $7.50 for 750ml.

So roughly double in the past 5 years. Hmm.

      • Agreed. Should be $5 a bottle.

  • +3

I ran out while I was waiting for a sale. Picked up the Woolworths Australian EVOO for $18/L which is a cheaper option than this deal if you're not near an IGA.

    • Everyone else seems to rec the aldi evoo

      Any idea how it compares?

      • Aldi evoo is quite good. My taste buds can't tell ay obvious difference

        • +1

my understanding is that any of the home brand australian made olive oils are produced by cobram estate.
not to say theyre the same grade.

the article over the weekend also said 70% of local olive oil production is by cobram

      • Aldi is the same price $18/L (Coles too) but i get 10% off per month and pay with discounted gift cards at Woolies so i come out ahead (and more if theres a good Everyday Rewards points deal too). Having said that i have bought Aldi before and feels same same. I’m not glugging them or having them side by side to be able to give a fair comparison though

        • Is it prying if I ask how you get your 10% off and discounted gift cards?

          • @Pusheencat: Whole family is on Woolworths Mobile plans that offer one 10% off shop per month so enough for one shop per week every month for us. Not sure if they still offer this anymore but if you have any insurance product with them you also get it. Discounted gift cards you can find everywhere on rewards platforms like shopback, cashrewards, health funds, energy companies or certain employers offer access to these platforms to buy discounted gift cards. • Didn't know until a few days ago that they grew and sold in the USA

    https://shop.cobramestate.com/collections/our-extra-virgin-o…

    • +3

Is that a bad thing? I honestly assumed they grew it here in Australia and now that its actually in USA, I am not sure how to feel about that

    • +14

The ones sold here are grown in Australia though

  • +7

The Aldi 'Olive Tree' brand evoo is a pretty good alternative to this. I can't justify these prices anymore

  • +2

I read elsewhere that Australian Olive Oil production has increased a lot this year.
Thus they cannot justify these high prices anymore. It's just profit taking now,

    • +2

The latest harvest is about to start so it's not profit taking yet.

    • Yes, because Cobram has monopoly on EVOO.

just to let you guys know, cobram olive oil rates as one of the highest levels of Phthalates of the olive oils. Something to do with exposure to plastic containers/buckets when they are doing the processing. it seems the spanish/italian versions are much cleaner, possibly due to less use of plastics in their processing.
*California Olive Ranch 100% California Extra Virgin Olive Oil — Total phthalates = 2,646 ppb
Cobram Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil First Cold Pressed 100% California Classic Flavor — Total phthalates = 6,092 ppb
*Colavita 100% California Extra Virgin Olive Oil —Total phthalates = 3,148 ppb
Madhava Clean & Simple Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil — Total phthalates = 3,188.9 ppb
O California Extra Virgin Olive Oil Organic Crafted from 100% California grown olives First Cold Press — Total phthalates = 4,477.07 ppb

Avocado oil and coconut oils tested very low , with levels usually sub 200ppb

    so YMMV

    • +5

      Source?

        • +3

these niece websites are loaded with dubious claims, even a quick glance has some of their 'best' ranked ones coming in plastic bottles.

          • @thesainter: Oh I don't fkin care. Still use Cobram/Red Island in my kitchen. The guy asked for source, I just did quick Google search and gave it to him/her to ponder

          • -2

@thesainter: These aren't claims, it's empirical evidence from EPA approved testing labs.

            • +1

@elektron: Except… it's from a sample of 1. And on US product, which is completely separately produced from Australia.

Obviously not good. But at the same time with little relevance to Australia, and not even reliable enough to form a judgement on there.

            • +2

@elektron: There are ZERO links to any evidence/testing in that article,
The owner of the site also has ZERO relevant qualifications. and is just a grifter.

              • +2

@thesainter: She is just on social media. She has a Masters in Communications. nothing to do with being a Chemist, lab tech, and whatever else you need to understand or test products

        • +1

Which shows it's a US test, on one bottle (sample). So not really relevant to Australia.

Something they'd want to look at over there of course. But can't be used to compare here.

    • +7

Phthalates make my microplastics taste richer and creamier.

    • +4

6ppm is not a huge amount though, for oil. If you drank a cup per day, that is 1.5mg of phthalates, around 20ug/kg body weight, within recommended limits. You may experience weight gain though.

    • +2

That is for the Californian version, not the Australian ones for sale here

      • -2

I noticed that too, but it would be reasonable to assume that they would be using similar processing techniques / manufacturing process.

        • +1

Yes and no. They would be similar but each market will have differences, like how Coke relies on corn syrup in the US because it's the dominant sugar, whereas Coke uses cane sugar as our dominant supply. Which has a relatively signficant difference on composition and flavour, even though the same product.

So as the issue is plastic based, it may well be that their process uses plastic there due to America's oil dependency/preference, whereas we use other materials more, just like different countries use more local materials generally. Our equipment and process is completely separate from theirs.

        • Nah , it would be reasonable to assume no similarity.

There are heaps of examples of products having a different composition in the USA or manufacturing process compared to other countries due to looser local standards.

  • +3

read its a bumper season for cobram. they're hoping focus on expanding bigly to the states.
maybe trump could increase tariff to 100% so they can make their own oil????!

  • +7

Ye na, at these prices, Aldi all the way, they had a good run but are taking the piss now that they're popular.

'Strayan made' only gets you so far.

  • +4

Woolies will have it on sale at that price from Wednesday

  • -8

It is not Mediterranean EVOO and overpriced. Mediterranean quality order: Spanish>Turkish>Italish>Greekish. lol.
Aldi sells mediterranish EVOO 3.780L for $36.99 https://www.aldi.com.au/product/the-olive-tree-mediterranean…

  • Yeah going to avoid buying at this price & wait for a drop. Sticking with the $18/L til prices drop.

  • +1

Wow that's some pricey Olive oil, even Michael Corleone wouldn't jack his oil prices that much.

  • Thanks OP, bought 6. Actually.

  • +1

Gee, I remember the half price was 7.50…
