    "g…rab"?

    • You get that cutting and pasting from FriendFace

  • +8

FREE SEATS! From as low as RM26

    This does not make sense

    • +1

Looking at their Facebook page, the RM26 seems to be Airport Taxes and fees, not the seats

    • +2

It is the taxes. The seat is free.

      • +6

Thats Bullshit. You cant buy the seats without the taxes - so the seats are not free.
I know several (most/all) airlines advertise this way but its illegal in Australia. Just ask Dodo who got fined for similar advertising tatics.

        • +11

I dont know who negged you but I support your point. Airasia previously got fined for misleading advertisement. That should be why thid was not advertised in australia

        • +29

Ummm…It's on a Malaysian website. Unless you advocate barring of websites into Australia then there's nothing illegal about it in Australia.

        • +1

What? Cardz is saying that this kind of advertising is illegal in Australia, not that the website should be barred in Australia. Its wrong to mislead consumers, and it should be illegal everywhere, its certainly immoral everywhere…

        • in australia, the airlines has to includes all the charges, but if they advertised in malaysia website then it is different story

        • +5

Mate, if you go to the Australian version of the website, the word FREE is no where to be found, instead they state " A BIG sale is coming"… Hope that solves that legal complex..

Australian consumers are quite "well protected" by the law, they pay multiples of what most of the rest of the world pay.. And I'm not whinging!

        • So shouldn't this site being Australian follow the same principle and not use free when its not?

        • +1

This website is run on users' posts, like a forum. It is not a commercial advertising medium - although the line gets a bit grey when reps post. What you are suggesting is censorship of users' posts. This comments section usually (as in this case) suggests to the Op to clarify anything which is misleading or unclear, and usually (as in this case) the Op complies. There is simply no need for moderators to go to a higher level of censorship when the community is so good at self-regulating. Instead of moaning about OzBargain to change its policies, how about joining the community and making constructive suggestions to the Op?

        • They advertised in Australian newspapers & go into trouble.

Also if they have an Australian presence & direct advertising to Australians, then the local arm can be liable.

    • The more you spend the more you save!

  • +4

    FREE SEATS FOR $8!

  • so when does it start AEST?

    • +2

      0300 15 january 2013.

      • I think 0300 is total number of promotion ticket.

  • +7

We can't expect the airlines to pay for airport tax and fees for us, so free seats is correct advertising, as they effectively does not get any income from the passengers, although the passengers does still need to pay something.

    • -7

But they get you with fuel surcharge.

      • +7

We can't expect the airlines to pay for airport tax and fees for us, so free seats is correct advertising

What if all other business follow this "FREE" style? Surely we can't expect them to pay storage fees, handling fees, refrigeration fees, taxes they paid when they bought the merchandise. So, are they allowed to advertise as "FREE (just pay the storage, handling, refrigeration fees and GST we paid. We effectively don't get any income from you. You just pay us the fees that we have paid others)"

    • +1

Selling without making a profit, and giving something for free are two different things. They advertise this as FREE!

      • +1

They are actually losing $$ as they still need to pay for fuel and wages for the pilot and stewards/stewardess.

    • Sure?! If a free ticket was given to you to fly to KL return by AA, u wont go then?
True OZB'er should never say never. Have seen deal when people complain, but I am sure if a super deal comes again from same company, they'll jump straight onto it. I know b/c I'm (and my family and my friends) one of them LOL!! :).

    • +20

Flown with them over 10 times. Never had a problem with them. They were always on time. Got me to where I wanted to go and staff were friendly. Or do you mean "as good as tiger" as in you didn't read the rules, turned up to the airport 5 minutes before boarding and threw a tanty they wouldn't let you on?

      • +3

I'm with you, at least 10 flights, including 2 return fares to europe when they flew to London and never had a single probably.
Even went the option town route and had the lie flat seats a few times.

      • +3

I flew with them often as well, most of the times is good, there will be the occasional delays, but that also happens to the full priced airlines like Singapore Airlines, Qantas or Malaysian Airlines. I flew with other budget airlines as well like Jetstar, Virgin, Lion Airlines and Scoot Airlines and I would say they are about the same. Never fly with tiger airways though.

I usually travel with the full priced airlines for business trips and use budget airlines for my personal travels, the savings from the air tickets I used to stay in better hotels and have a good time, so I would not mind the occasional delays, which does not happens everytime, I would say 1 in 10 times (the longest delays I encounter is about 2 hours, but if the delays if say 12 hours or more, then I think I will get very upset).

      • -1

Well I'm glad you had a good experience with them, can't say the same for myself and about 50 other Aussies that were stranded in KL for 36 hours recently. Communication from AA was absolutely shocking, and 3 months later we're still trying to get a refund of around $250 for items we pre-purchased, but were never given. And my original post was my personal opinion, not a directive to ozbargainers to dismiss this offer.
As for throwing a tanty….grow up DH

        • +2

Sorry to hear about your experience from AA. Interesting about the refund on pre-purchase. I also had a similar situation on pre - purchase of psp which they cancelled sometime just prior my flight which I was unaware. I was expecting your situation when the flight attendant told me about it. Only when I asked and she said I had to do online refund. BUT to my amazement, without doing anything, got a call personally from AA about this and they said will refund.

Anyway I believe AA are trying, and have improved overall since they were formed, just need to have consistency on their services..

But as a frequent AA flyer, remember it's a Low Cost airline.

      • Double post, sorry

      • Totally agree. They were excellent as a low budget carrier and will happily fly with them for all of my trips to Asia.

    • +10

I've flown AirAsia about 4 times and like them and had no trouble at all. Flew Tiger once, and never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever again.

Is that enough to make my point? :P

      • +5

Exactly the same for me. Flown Air Asia 4 times with no problems what so ever. Flown Tiger once and had to take them to the ACCC for a refund.

      • like your comment.. THUMBS UP !!!! :)

      • +1

        Soo…ever?

        • You could say that :P

When I flew Tiger it was a 9pm departure from Melb - Perth. When we got there, the flight that was meant to leave the night before were still there, and most had been there since 9am that day. Our flight was delayed by 2 hours, and when we left the people from the day before were still there, and would be (from the announcement before we boarded) for another 2 hours. Absolutely appalling.

Plus when on the aircraft the leg room was non existent! I'm not tall (6'0") and my best mate was in the seat behind me (6'3") and I couldn't move my seat back at all as his knees were hard up against mine, and same with me my legs were hard up against the seat in front of me. Most uncomfortable flight I've ever had. I've never had that problem on any aircraft before or since (and I've flown on a lot of small aircraft).

So there's my rant/story of Tiger :) AirAsia on the other hand were really good, would definitely fly them again!

    • +1

      ozhipsters is thata-way —>

    • I think everyone has a horror story with a airline.

Mine is with jetstar cancelling flights and lying to us about our rights in such a occasion. I'm definately not paying for a flight with them again, but if cheap enough i'd go (and carrying weights just to spite them)

as for AA i've flown them probably 6 times, each time they have been fine. I can say the same for tiger actually.

  • getting over there doesn't seem that cheap, the cheap flights appears to be leaving their main base so IMHO there's no free seats to indonesia

    • only worthwhile if you actually planned to go to SE asian countries i think. fly-thru to JP/china to and back amounts to about full fare anyway

  • +1

I feel that the title may be misleading. AA has often posted their 'BIG' sales now and again. The 'free' seats generally apply domestically within SE Asia. Not to/from Australia. If there was actually free seats, should also entail which sectors are the actually free seats (which would be a bit tricky considering all their fares are 'all-in' ).

I am +ve this as there it will help getting a good deal to Asia.

  • The email I got stated the sale starts on the 15th 0300 hours AEDST

I thought you can only see the sale when its on?

  • +1

bunch of freeloaders. nothing better to do than complain about little things. +1 for the deal

    • +20

But you didn't +1 the deal

  • so should we stay up till 3am or will it be ok to grab them at like 6 or 7 am or they will be gone you reckon

    • +7

you should get up at 2:50 and refresh your browser every 2 seconds

  • All in all, nothing's special here.
Gold coast - Bangkok, one way nearly $300. no return. Normal airlines are about 600-750 for return ticket.

They put normal price mixed with free seat (which is only in asia)

    • I think you are missing the point of the sale.

    • Normally they are 600 one way.. I just booked thailand a few weeks ago.

      • you overpaid

  • So the return legs are not "free"? I am thinking about flying to HCM and then to KL. Sounds like that segment will not be discounted.

  • if i was in perth i woould grab the 21 dollars bali - perth and just lookout for cheap outgoing flight later or grab the 161 and its 180 return not bad

    • +3

I am in perth, but think I will be in the eastern states when I fly to SEA. Going on a NZ cruise that finishes in SYD.

But PER - DPS is a good ploy generally, as long as you factor in flying into that shithole. About $40 in entry and exit taxes and just the fact that it's bali.

  • Can't wait to sit and stare at a heap of "408 request time out blah blah blah" pages on their website come 3:00AM. Hopefully will take less than an hour and half to book a seat this time….

  • They aren't actually advertising it as Free Seats in Australia (because it's misleading and illegal here). They are marketing it as Big Sale.

It's also not that much cheaper than their sale that just ended today midnight! SYD -> KL was $299, it's now 'from $249'. It is $150 cheaper than their regular price one way though. KL -> MEL was $188 (if booked as a one way) now $134, saving of $54.

    • +1

I dont think the sale started yet. It says 15th

  • +1

ah..dont bother …99% the website will jam, and you had to wake up at midnight keep pressing refresh button on your pc..im not saying you wont get the free seat, but chances are real slim…worth it or not..you be the judge…5 years ago, it used to be easy when not that many people fly AA, now it's just ridiculous to get any special offer ticket ..

    • yupe, i will just see what i can get tomorrow at work, leave my holiday plan to chance :D

  • Just a silly question, are those prices single way or return?

    • one way :D

  • a good site to use for these sales is airasiaplus.com they will do a search for 15 days from the date you enter. Helps you pin point the cheapest flights. Booking during a sale is another matter.

    • when i used airasiaplus.com even though i pick the destination, when it shows the figures it says to KL? Not the destination i picked.

      • They only do the direct routes, I guess it's just the way it's programmed. The destination you picked would have had a layover in KL so you'd need to do two searches in that case. Realistically though the main game is the flights from and to Australia as that's your biggest cost right there.

What I do is search for Syd - KL flights to find the bargain date and then jump onto AA for more precise info on joining flights etc.

  • What would the cheapest fare be for a return flight from MEL to anywhere in India.. during this sale period?

According to http://www.airasia.com/au/en/promotion/rr3730802.page Melbourne-KUL-Kochi is AUD 319. Is the return fare double of that i.e. $638?? Can anyone help? Thanks

    • Return leg is about $190 (Kochi to KL $65 to Mel $125). It is cheaper to book the return leg seperately.

  • so our friends in asia get to spend $8 to fly somewhere yet that would never happen in australia. Even somewhere as close as hobart-melbourne you would be lucky to get a cheap ticket for $50, one way. Lame.

  • +2

Another AA sale. Once again - fares are not as good as seem at first.
Routes I am interested in are dearer than last Big Sale http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/83160
5 November bought Air Asia KL-Gold Coast for $72, now $134!
See that post for changes to cabin luggage limits (1 bag only, 7kg max) - came in on 1 Dec 2012.
Oh well a good nights sleep for me.

  • +4

Big surprise. Goes straight to 'waiting room' and even has the nerve to call me a 'Poof' (http://postimage.org/image/gq41ftgn1/) w0w!

  • Can't see much of a 'big sale'. BEst fares are a little bit less than normal but this isn't like in previous years

  • -2

I wasted a good hour of my sleeping time this morning.

    • whoopty-fudging-do

  • Can anyone advise how to save on the booking (credit card fee) when booking via the KL web site. I know we can pay through paypal from the AU website and save the booking fee.

    • +1

I think if you change the currency on the payment screen to AUD then you can use paypal but the exchange rate is probably crap so you do the math.

  • thanks jack. that is a very good tip
