Yeah, with how the markets going for PC gaming handhelds, I'd definitely say its safe to assume 799-899 is the new RRP for this.
8840U is basically the new entry level processor.
OLED is becoming standard (Ayaneo 3 OLED and LCD are the exact same price for example) and there isn't a whole lot of innovation on the zotac zone.
It's pretty much, shoulda launched over a year ago, kinda specs to be worth even close it its actual rrp.Ayaneo 3 is way more expensive. JB & Gamesmen both have it on pre-order asking for $1799 LOL!

This will prob end up $799-$899 before Xmas! No way they can sell at this ridiculous price! There's still a few available from their indiegogo campaign at 1086 AUD (they claim a lower value to get it through customs and avoid fees) https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ayaneo-3-the-world-s-firs…
Also it has a modular system for the controls, so you can easily swap out different styles or replace broken ones.
The specs in general are better other than the CPU being the same. The OLED version is 144hz for example. It'll definitely wind up going down in price eventually though.
AMD has lot of tech enabled in recent drivers for these handhelds using the 780m gpu like latest frame gen and FSR that helps alot
What capacity storage drive comes with this model?
512GB, according to the specs tab on the Handheld Console listing page.
512 GB M.2 NVMe PCIe 4.0 x 4 SSD (2280)
I'm happy with my vanilla Steam Deck that I got a couple years ago - but this seems like really good value, now that you can directly install SteamOS on it - or am I missing something?
I think the only obvious limiting factor is that the 8840U seems like it's a 15W version of the 28W Z1 Extreme found in the ROG Ally X - but if you're predominantly using this for older titles, indies and emulation - it should be more than enough.
This one goes to 35 watts
I found the 15W number originally from a spec comparison site, so my fault for not validating further. The PCCG listing states up to 28W, so I'm all the more confused now!
So what the heck is the difference between the 8840U and the Z1 Extreme then? I have no heckin' idea…
But that does make this feel like an even better deal, then - right?
7in 120Hz AMOLED 1080p screen, hall effect joysticks and triggers, full-size m.2..The only difference between Z1 Extreme and 8840U is that the former has the NPU disabled. They are the same sillicon otherwise.
Bazzite might be the best middle ground OS for this in lieu of SteamOS
Wonder if you can upgrade the battery with a bigger after matket one like the Ally, seems like a decent package and i can't see why SteamOs won't run on this. I have Game Pass so windows is the main option, really hope MS make a deal to have steam OS on their Xbox app but also have XBox game pass link to Steam on the SteamOS…
A bit better battery and 24gb memory would have made this a mint device. Sell it at $1,000 and it would have been the near perfect handheld.
Would have been a great deal few months ago but now Z2 Extreme devices are on the horizon which offers 15-30% performance bump …
yeah but they will also be 50%-100% price bump.
Guess you gotta weigh up your options.
Should also note that when z2e options become available these older ones will likely get cheaper.
As an ROG Ally owner, I’d prob woulda gone for this now if I could get it for this price (paid 650 2nd hand for the Ally earlier this year). The pros of the Zotac vs Ally: OLED screen, standard SSD size, touch pad controls and finally 2x USB-C 4. That last one is prob the main thing, I could use this as my main computer just by adding an external GPU. Cons: doesn’t look as good (subjective), smaller battery. I think anyone looking to get a PC handheld should consider this unit based on the strong price / specs. Any upcoming new handheld will not be 2x faster while costing heaps more. My 2c.
I agree with most of what you said, the only other piece your missing is the quality factor.
In my experience I've always gotten lower build quality from zotac products (2 gpu's and a mini PC). In the case of the gpu's, after 6 months 1 started to fail, had to go through warranty which was hell, had to be shipped back to China and when it got back there the help was limited and it felt like a constant battle to try and get it to fall under warranty.
The 2nd GPU started having artefacting and smaller issues right outside of warranty period.
The mini PC felt cheap and had thermal throttling.
My experience may be unique, but I don't rank zotac high on the quality ranks.
Fair call, that's good to know.
I guess that's the trade off, better specs for lower price or get the ROG Ally X for double the cost for "peace of mind".
Lenovo has a history of having amazing build quality, especially on their laptops…if that translates to their handhelds aswell then I would rank the Lenovo up on that list
Will buy when the battery last 24 hrs at least
?
The battery life of handheld PCs isn't ever going to get anywhere close to 24 hours 🤷
not long time ago we all say mobile phone screen isnt ever going to get folded three times
looks like this will be the new RRP now, who the hell will buy this at their current RRP$1400??? Bet Legion Go S - windows version will dive soon once steam OS one is out
