No fee if you donβt amend it π
Yes there is. You pay $15 per annum for the ability to amend. If you choose not to subscribe to that, you can amend for a one off fee of $80.
So… there isn't a fee if you don't amend it…
@Originality: You can choose to opt out of the annual fee that is only charged after the first year (which you've agreed to when you initially sign up). Then you can amend the will for $80 each time you amend it. If you never intend amending it, and opt out, then there's no fee.
Has anyone dealt with these before? Have been considering getting my will done for some time..
It is one of those things that are too good to be true - I have experienced these guys when they offered the same deal through my super fund.
It's a great website, easy to use and you get a will from it, but it is not 'free'. There are a bunch of add ons that they upsell you throughout the entire process. It's not a bad thing and I am sure that they provide a quality service, but these fees for add ones are not upfront and certainly not 'free'.
Their add-ons are not necessary though. Sure its a good idea to have a power-of-attorney, but not necessary… etc.
Go see a proper lawyer :) Apparently, an incorrectly worded will can cause alot of headaches. I know you wont be around …. but the headaches for others.
That's always going to be an issue, no matter who you see, as the law is how it's interpreted by the person with authority at the time, and considering we can't bloody agree on basics 90% of the time, no chance that everyone will get the proper outcome, so you have to try and do what's best for you without intentionally hurting others. Yes, bit frustrated dealing with lawyers and their sly ways.
This is not legal advice!
I have no clue about a will.
Buts not hard to interpret simple language like
Bob, jane and bathurst get to split the house.
Mark is a methhead and gets nothing.
Mark is a methhead and gets nothing.
Yep, if you're going to exclude someone make sure you give a reason! Harder to contest, or so I've heard.
(profanity) you Riker, you swallowed my Lego, you're not getting shit.
@TsunamiInTheHouse: While I agree with your premise, I've seen and heard of some strange things, hence my comment. π
As a "proper lawyer" myself specialising in wills and estates, if your assets and wishes are simple, this service will be fine. Any complications like blended families, dependant children, uneven distributions, legacies and trusts, go see a lawyer.
As a proper lawyer can I ask, which ways can a house/home with no remaining mortgage be passed down. I know it can be "gifted" but can you also specify to sell and split funds? How does it work
@Mintee: not legal advice
Can be transferred by your executor into joint names as tenants in common in percentages you specify and sold later. Alternatively proceeds of sale can be split as you specify. Usually the beneficiaries decide with the execs but you can specify that the asset be liquidated. Prob not a good idea in most cases as the property market fluctuates.
I went to one. $5k later…. I am still alive.
@Mr Frodo: I am implying that I can't review how good their services are until after I die. They took 5k. I have a will. Not sure whether it works.
How can I create the most headaches when I pass? I know I already cause a lot when I'm breathing but want to plan something big on my departure. Can I elect a Nigerian prince as the executor of my will?
Why not just pass it down to Ai π
@prankster: Hahaha!!! Love this suggestion = )
Make it emulate my voice and give it a chaotic neutral alignment!
Isn't that only if it's contested?
If you only have one child, it's going to be pretty straight forward I would've thought.
Technically correct, practically stupid.
Except it isn't good enough.
For the love of God don't listen to this person.
If that's the way you think it is probably good enough for your needs. If you go to the casino and max out all your credit before you die you don't even need to have the bog roll.
Wills and estate planning are usually for people who have enough assets to give away.
Whatchoo talkin' 'bout, Willis?
If you have witnesses you "trust" to keep copies stored safely and file it so they can find it
(and maybe check on their well being every 6 months or faster)
and get them to sign and date it
and included on your will that you will create no future wills without destroying this one in front of your witnesses first
and store this will in a good location
and appoint executors
and maybe some other things
Maybe then … (something something)
(From Not a lawyer and maybe unreliable)
So… its a free $20 and a will that i can not use or cancel straight away?
Big companies really want your data.
I've seen people do much more for much less on here lol
You can use it as soon as you like. You just need a death certificate to activate.
Revocation of a will occurs by destroying it or writing a new one (or remarrying)
How to destroy this electronic one presumably in their database?
Do the will, wait till their in house solicitors (or assistants) check it, then wait to receive the finished version - then you're free to top yourself.
So you can only get the simple will which doesn't have these add ons:
Personalised legal advice
Will customisations to include:
Rights of residences
Custom ages of inheritance
Binding gift conditions
Optional legal advice for:
Blended families
Overseas assets
Asset pools over $1.5 million
Businesses, trusts and self-managed super
Upcoming marriage or divorce
Beneficiaries with a disability
Suitability for a Testamentary trust
Upon death, all your money goes to TA.
At least not jv
Should go to Scotty π
What about the Lego sets? π
I guess the philosophers were right - there truly is such a thing as Free Will.
And as a added bonus There's A Way as well
That comes with any and all Wills, though. Not a bonus.
However you get one, get one. The Public Trustee will rob you blind if they administer it.
Are there any legal repercussions if you just do it for the $20? Can I just ignore it if I want to make a different will with somebody else in the future?
Will you write in this will this isn't the will?
No, you could do that. It would be valid until you have another one done elsewhere.
Last time I looked at it
They will self appointment themselves as the executor of the will and charge a percentage of the assets
Thatβs how they make money out of these wills
Legally, you can nominate your family to do it
But if you click through without reading, you may be subject to a expensive unexpected bill should the time comes
You can choose your own executors.
They make money from the $15 a year 'subscription' (which enables amendments) and they initially try to upsell you other services (all of which looked useful to me). I only got a few emails so I certainly wouldn't call it spam.
Have you got the Will from them? Can you please share more of information on how easy or difficult it was to setup?
Yes about 18 months ago. Mine was a fairly simple one and was easy to do.
They do not force you to appoint themeselves as the executor.
You just get the will prepared by them and cancel any additional services.
Then you can print it and get witnessed and signed by a justice of peace or some other relevant person.
The rest is up to you.
You will have a professionally prepared will and get paid $20.
Free Legal Wills at Safewill
Better than a free illegal will
Like Aceboy confirms, BAD deal
If you're making a will by just blindly clicking buttons without reading what you're doing, you should probably see a lawyer instead. For everyone else, this seems like a good deal for simple wills where you wish to appoint your own executor.
so as a person under 25 do i need a will π
Find out what the government does when you don't have a will, then you can answer the question yourself.
If it's too hard … just sign power of attorney to me and don't question what I do … :P
Note that there's a $15 annual fee (after the first free year) to maintain your account (which allows you to amend your will)
