    • I'm half Filipino and visited family with no issues in the past but since my other half is also Filipino I probably wouldn't be a target.

I have a friend from there and she said if I ever visited, she'd hire private security for me. She also lives in Australia now and hasn't been back there in 12 years. That tells you a lot about the place.

    • Kidnappings occur in the Philippines and kidnappers may target popular tourist areas.

Shootings occur in Australia every couple days as a contra example

As to The Philippines I have been by myself and with my (f) partner a dozen time over the last several years, no issues, including late night wandering around. So far, one volcano, 3 typhoons and 1 earth quake.

The only thing is trying to organise trips things can be tricky, they nickel and dime you but annoying is not the same as not safe.

Southern parts of Mindano might be best to avoid though

As to Cebu Airlines, its the Jetstar of Philippines Airlines We have travelled with Cebu several times ex Melb, I like them because you can't recline the seats and the flight match ups to get to Melb from Tassie are great, twice recently they have been very delayed :)

That aside, I have no idea how you people plan so far ahead, these are for next year !!! Normally I can't plan a trip more then two weeks ahead, something unexpected always seems to occur if I try so I have given up and I have been retired since I was 35 (am now 59)

"Shootings occur in Australia every couple days as a contra example" - yes but the difference is that violent crime in Australia doesn't tend to target tourists specifically (similar story in the US). We don't have kidnappings of tourists, for example.

          wot ?

          https://www.news.com.au/national/queensland/news/backpacker-…

THE young British backpacker who was allegedly held for two months and abused by a Cairns man has been captured on CCTV at a roadhouse just moments before her rescue.

Australia has seen a number of horrific attacks on foreign tourists in recent times.

On Wednesday, a 60-year-old man will stand trial over an alleged sex attack on two female backpackers at a remote beach southeast of Adelaide. The man, who denies the charges including attempted murder and indecent assault, is accused of attacking the women at remote Salt Creek, in the Coorong National Park, in February last year.

And just last week, Queensland police revealed a 24-year-old Polish nanny, who was violently raped while working at Petrie north of Brisbane last year, was killed in a car crash back in her homeland.

She died just days before a 28-year-old man was charged over the vicious attack in a council car park that saw her undergo facial surgery for injuries including a broken nose.

But one of the worst cases in recent years involved the rape of 21-year-old French woman Sophie Collombet, who was left to die on a Brisbane park bench in March, 2014.

In October last year, Benjamin James Milward was jailed for life for raping the student while he was high on ice, and then leaving her covered in nothing but a jacket and a newspaper.

          and another

@ruprectaus: Sorry, when I said we don't have kidnappings of tourists, I meant the type of kidnapping involving a ransom. Also, that last link you provided from 2019… I wouldn't call someone in Australia on a working holiday a "tourist" in the usual sense of the word. A Google search defines a tourist as "a person who is travelling or visiting a place for pleasure." - the key word being pleasure, not work.

Interestingly, I never heard about any of these stories - I guess they didn't make the news here in Victoria.

Also, all of the incidents you mention are attacks on women. Can you name some murders/kidnappings/assaults that have taken place on male tourists in Australia in recent years?

Did you get all your jabs? Also all the flu jabs? I didn't get any and didn't get any of that. Neither has anyone in my family. Sheep.

Only gays get hiv. So unless you're one of them or you don't plan to share a needle with one, you should be pretty safe.

lol 7kg carry on only. Who are these deals targeted at. People who only want to spend the weekend in Manila?

    • Lots of Filipinos ship the bulk of their gifts to family in a box via sea freight. It's very cheap and takes 6-7 weeks to get there.

If they ship it ahead so it arrives before their flight they just have to personally fly back and won't need checked luggage.

    • Lol, but I do think Cebu are a low cost airline like Jetstar. All add ons are at a cost.

      • +1

@WhatTimeIsIt They ARE a low cost airline. But even if you match and pay for the add ons included in a full service flight like Philippine Airlines, for example, the savings are still massive for a direct flight. (around 40-50%)

Me and my family did 3 weeks in Hawaii (among over 10 other summer destinations at other times over the years). 7kg is a lot of shorts and t shirts. Definately not for the likes of you, princess. Why are you complaining? Either cough up double the amount for your needless stuff, or pay tripple for a full service airline.
