    Grade A or Grade B?

    • +3

      Grade A mate.

      • +8

Refurb states 'Good' not 'Very Good' - Sometimes your listings have Very good, sometimes good, sometimes 'refurbished' only - what's the difference sorry?

If good is A, is Very good… Mint? But I've also read on other comments it's still pot-luck end of the day.

        • +4

          It is pot-luck.

        • +5

yea i bought the grade A machine before which turns out to be more like a grade B with lot of scratches. Hence, I decide not to pay with ebay gift cards this time so worse case I can return it for a full refund, not receiving a bunch of unwanted gift cards.

          • +11

@ozvictor: I've been following these ACT A-grade eBay deals for a while now..

And the consensus from buyers is that these units tend to have considerable wear, both in cosmesis (significant imperfections, sometimes including display) and internals (sometimes batts have been <80%, these machines are continuously running on a corporate desk).

Buyer beware, be prepared to roll the dice at these prices.

        • +22

All day these units are A-grade units; however, since it's open to such a wide range of interpretations and perspectives, I'm just trying to be a little more transparent. These units have been used previously, so will have some minor marks and scratches but are still in overall great condition. However, people think that if a unit shows signs of anything other than brand new, it's a B grade unit.

It's always been a balancing act.

          • +9

@Calmago: You pay peanuts, but expect avocados?

            Come on people. Be realistic.

          • +7

@Calmago: Thanks for the response! I totally expect some minor/moderate wear, but I suppose there should be a more.. Structured guideline as to what constitutes a particular grade - one that's easily readable and listed on your website perhaps.

I.e. 'x' amount of scratches on chassis but none on screen and 90%+ battery is A (or highest grade)
x amount of scratches on chassis and 1-2 minor (i.e. non function impairing) scratches on screen and 85%+ battery is A- or B+ etc etc. I think that would help with these queries and also allow you to better categorise sales. The scale you set will ultimately be subjective to you/your team but at least people will know exactly what to expect as well!

            • +4

@ReaperX22: It's really, really, really hard to manage that level of detail on a production level when we check in around 2000 items a day. Again, people's subjectivity plays a big part.

If you kind of look around, websites like, eBay, Amazon, Kogan, and Reebelo all have the same level of requirements for what advertised grading it has to be; again, it's a bit vague, and it has to be in some way or another.

              • -2

@Calmago: So why not just be upfront and say used? That chassis state may vary, check the battery status (which is usually the most important bit) and screen for scratches and classify them that way? That should reduce the amount of vagueness, this is not just you guys, but across the board.

Honestly, because it's all subjective, you would be best to try and make it as objective as possible to reduce the amount of unhappy customers and negative connotations the refurb industry gets.

                • +1

@Cousin IT: Doesn't 'refurb' mean 'used'??

                  • +1

@tight-a55: Refurbished products may deceive inexperienced buyers into believing that the company will individually open, clean, and replace components in the laptops, resulting in items that appear nearly new.

In contrast, labeling them as 'used' might scare off these novices, making them worry about potential issues with the products.

So, as a seller, which option would you choose?

          • +8

@Calmago: I've received a grade A which didn't even meet your own definition @Calmago - your sales team did return it for me and sent me another but even that one still didn't meet your definition (scuffs on the screen) but to a lesser extent so I decided to just get on with it.

I bought the Lenovo yoga L13 refurb which was grade A from a different seller - THAT is a proper grade A.

            Ozvictor is correct, buyer beware.

    • From listing:

Condition: Good - refurbished. The item shows moderate wear…

  • Love mine apart from the missing keystrokes issue that keeps coming back (apparently nothing to do with the hardware though).

Other than that amazing build quality and screen.

    • Yep, but discount only works through eBay

  • +3

Got specials also on the 15" version as well?

    • Keen on this

Or anything that can be expandable to 32gb

      • All surface laptops have soldered ram.

32gb was available on the 15" 3 but it's very rare.

        • +1

          :(

Maybe I don't need that much ram

          • @Lingnoi: Most likely not for a few years anyway. If you need 32 GB ram you probably require a faster machine in general.

            • +2

@ozhunter68: Thank you so much. Cant have it all

Being a tight a$$ and ram haha

    • Same here, keen for a 15" with a comparable price to this

  • Does the screen detach?

    • +1

      no, that's surface book

    • +111

      No more than once.

      • +1

I tip my hat to you, I think you will have won the single most upvotes to a reply.

        🙂

  • +1

What's the condition of the battery?

    • +2

      Min 80%

  • @Calmago do you have any top end Chromebooks at a good price. Don't see any on your website. Or eBay store

    • Don't really see Chromebooks, sorry, and if we do, they are too old for retail.

      • Hey mate, is this version the alacantara model or full metal?

      • +1

Happy to take an old chrome book off your hands for free if it helps (or cheap if you prefer)

  • bought one for my high school son.

  • How is this laptop compare to HP EliteBook 840 G6 Intel i5 8365U 1.60GHz 16GB RAM 256GB SSD that go for unfer $300?

    • This has touchscreen..

      • +2

What if touch screen is not something one care about?

        • The Elitebook is more futureproof. You can upgrade the RAM (Soldered on the Surface) & upgrade the SSD & battery far more easily.

          • @Cyphar: HPs do not last as long. ususally get hot, issues start right when they cross warranty period, the list goes on. So how futureproof can they be when they dont last?

            • @dan0909: I sell heaps of Elitebooks from Gen 5 - Gen 9. Can't say I've encountered those issues. I think they are a great laptop.

        • touch screen means glass digitizer, so stops lcd from getting scratched, think of it as a screen protector if you don’t use touch.

    • +2

      and an i7 Gen10 CPU

      • I think i read here people said that from 8th to 10th there is very little improvements?

        • +1

About 20% difference in benchmark performance between these two CPU's.

Not sure how much noticeable difference in your/real world use, but sure noticeable.

In saying that an 8th gen i5 still holds up pretty well, for now.

    • +2

get a microsoft surface, put it in a blender & blend, what comes out woud be better than HP's working laptop.

  • Bought a surface laptop 3 last year refurbished from another reputable dealer ebay and cant fault it. Condition was as described, and overall performance for daily word processing, internet browsing, media comsumption very good.

Only downside is the alacantra keyboard which can get dirty, not sure if this is the same being offered.

    • -1

Avoid USED Surface Alcantara keyboard. It doesn't age well.
      But this one isn't Alcantara

  • If only the SSD storage was bigger then I’d consider this deal.

    • +1

You can upgrade it pretty easily.

  • Hi Calmago, Just ordered one ! What are choice of colors and kb type? Didn’t get to opinion to select

    • +4

Hey mate, these units are all black with the solid keyboard. Not the Surface Alcantara keyboard.

      • +1

Cool, any chance of upgrading and add to larger ssd to 512gb…(at extra cost ) after purchased?

        • Sorry, mate, we don't offer upgrades on Surfaces.

  • Can I upgrade the ram and SSD by myself? Will it void the warranty of 12mths?

    • +4

      SSD yes, Ram no.

I can't see them being able to tell anyway if you swap the old ssd back in.

  • +6

    Release 2019, fyi…

    • +3

Believe or not, my phone is even older than this refurb bloke. lol

      • +1

My phone is 2019 (Note 10+), I'm trying to make it my first phone to 10 years, looking strong so far..

        • I had the same phone for years but then battery becomes bad.. yours?

          • @McMaferMur: Accubattery estimates my batt capacity at 84% after six years. Am feeling the shorter charge cycles gradually over the years, but still very much functional.

I follow all the usual batt charging hygiene practices (up to 80% for me).

Feels like I've easily got at least a few more years in it.

What have you kept so long?

            • @muwu: I like the s pen i have many notes model of samsungs before note 10 for example note 3 and i still have it. I think i played games alot on the note 10+ and didnt do the goos battery charging way like you did

  • +4

I got the Surface Laptop 4 with a dock from these guys a few months ago for about $100 more. It's in great condition and is a lovely little unit. I was a bit worried the soft palm rests might be gross on a refurb model but was pleasantly surprised.

  • These are like 5-6 years old.

  • +1

Thanks Rep, just bought one, with price under $400, it's a no-brainer not to miss, good for kids to play Fortnight, Roblox and some school works!

  • Brought one as I trust Australian Computer Traders

    • +13

      Where did you bring it?

      • +2

They brought comment to the party

      • +1

        Brought one to OzB party

  • @Calmago, bought one with EOFY20. See that EOFY22 is a further discount so requested cancellation of the order so I can order with the 2nd code.

  • Bought one. Hopefully it will be good for couple of years for kids.

  • +7

Just got the mac Macbook Air deal they had recently and the unit looks like had been run over several times… scratches and dings all over the bottom. Not sure if that was meant to be grade A also but it's bad….

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/909811

    • Got mine today. Looks fine except the Apple logo is a bit tarnished

    • +1

Yeah, I would defiently like you to send through some detail on that, feel free to PM more or shoot a message through the eBay portal, and customer service will assist.

      • I Willl PM you… as this was a birthday gift that I no longer can really give as the condition is a bit embarrasing

  • +1

No RAM upgrade, but SSD is. It is one of those tiny m.2 2230 ones.

Battery is replaceable on these, but a major PITA: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Microsoft+Surface+Laptop+3+13.5…

Screen res is good, but not as good as surface Pro.

  • +1

    Any newer models?

  • This one or Samsung tab s9?

    • Oranges and pears ?

      • +5

        more like a pineapple.

Our entire store range should be included.

  • Maybe a noob question, but can you charge this laptop itself via the USB C on this model ?

    • +2

Yup, check your charger supports PD 2.0 with 60W

      • Thanks, I was worried as I already ordered assuming it will support USB C charging

  • anyone getting 'This code can't be applied to your order'?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/205388124815

    • +5

that is 3 years older processor than this one, even worse it is HP.

    • +1

      The Dynabook looks much better:

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/186894929705

      • Great laptop but could be rubbish condition as it is B grade.

  • +2

So just some feedback. Ordered one and then requested cancellation 5 mins later realising I could get a further discount using eofy22. Ordered another assuming cancellation would go through and dropped a message to them via ebay. They declined stating its already shipped and no response on chat yet.

Hoping I can return one as I receive it.
