  • What the heck is that piece of chicken…
Can't they give us 2 pieces and no chips + gravy instead? :|

  • +7

Tried that last week…. a TINY chicken fillet, with FRIES only

    • +1

      No gravy?

      • +3

you're meant to get a small tub of gravy with it. It's the same gravy used in the potato and gravy

      • with gravy… but i don't like it and its not something eatable, just like tomato sauce can grab for free

    • I can confirm that chicken piece is tiny. Probably 1/2 or 1/3rd the size shown in the image.

  • It is grilled chicken fillet. Tried it last week, just ok

  • +7

I've tried it, ok for $2 but otherwise nothing special. I think I'd get more value using $2 on the Loose Change menu at Maccas to be honest

  • +3

Good price but the chicken I got was disgusting. Dry hard and tasteless…

    • yeah i went to get double downs and all they had was this rubbish.. looks tiny compared to the photo and the chicken was crap

it said "introductory price $2", even at $2, its a rip off

      • +1

Do they not have the double down anymore or was it just that particular store/time of day? D:

        • +1

          Gone everywhere sadly. :(

  • Chicken strip is the size of my finger (or smaller). For $2 it's ok given it includes at least $2 worth of chips (and there's free gravy) but I wonder how much they can charge for it. The chicken doesn't taste that great and it looks pathetic.

    • +7

Chicken strip is the size of my finger

      Do you have big fingers?

  • Not bad for the two dollar price point imo. But sadly, doesn't feel the massive void that 9 pieces for 10 has left.

    • 9 pieces for $10 is still going last time I checked (yesterday)

  • It's just a snack and won't satisfy any serious hunger. I wouldn't pay any more than $2.

  • Yeah, it is really really tiny.

    • +2

Would we face difficulty in finding the piece of chicken, in case if it drops into the gaps in between chips :D

  • +23
    • You can't be serious..

      • +3

Think he done away some chips. He's just showing the actual size of fillet I assume? (It really is tiny eh)

    • +18

this is what you get, no joke

      looks like a fried rat

    • +6

Come on. Surely you ate some of the chips…

    • +3

The piece of chicken I got was even smaller than that! No joke!

    • +1

it looks like a pretty gross piece of chicken… sort of like a legless cockroach belly-up…

    • +3

Based on that photo, I'm going to neg this deal…

    • +8

It looks like the burnt up fetus of some poor creature. It's even got an eye and is attempting to smile at it's sheer misfortune.

      • was going to say that it looks like a fetus!

      • I've officially lost my appetite.

    • There should be more chips but you did take out the gravy which goes inside the box.

  • I wouldnt call it a bargain, all its worth imo

  • +28

How much is the $2 taster box normally ?

    • +11

      Oh jv.

      You've done it again! :)

    • The equivalent of just enough petrol to get you out of the actual servo itself

  • +3

    Thanks, I'm hungry now -.-

  • Its OK. Not that great!

  • Big meh from me :/

  • Had it over a week ago. Big pass. Snack box a much better option if you have another buck or so. I guess it's alright if you only have a $2 coin. TIP: Ask them to get rid of the gravy as it's low quality and takes up precious room inside the box that could otherwise be occupied with additional chips. Unless they were stingy with me and the gravy container isn't supposed to be put in the box…

    • +18

In that case tell them you don't want the gravy and once they hand over the box, say on second thoughts can i have the gravy.

      • Genius!

      • I did this… Just blamed a child for being indecisive.

    • I've always seen them measure the amount of chips with a square plastic cup thing.

      • -2

exactly so it won't make a difference!

  • +3

I don't always admit it but I genuinely love KFC

I have a dream and it looks something like this:

    http://i.imgur.com/MrOGV.jpg

  • This is absolutely tiny. The piece of chicken isn't longer (or thicker) than a pinkie finger. There are very few chips or gravy in there either.

  • +1

its a 'sampler' box to introduce a new style of chicken (like the maccas lamb taster). chill

    • +1

If they wanted us to sample it, they should have given them for free.We get samples at supermarkets, in shopping centres, at bakeries..etc Can't believe we're being asked to pay $2 for this 'sampler' box and that over 30 OZbargainers reckon its a bargain

  • -5

    Tried one already. VERY UNHEALTHY

    • +19

who would have thought at a fine establishment like Kentucky Fried Chicken

    • +1

      Sherlock.

  • +10

I use to work at KFC and there are rules with substituting items that makes this deal workable, I think. A side can be traded for any other side but chicken can't be traded for anything not even other less expensive chicken.
Here's the list of sides: gravy, potato & gravy, chips, drink (in this case obviously can size), coleslaw and lastly a bread roll. I would just swap the gravy if I was you for a drink.

In case anybody wants to know the best times to get KFC are just before peak periods as once it is cooked it can legally be kept for up to 1 and a half hours before it has to be thrown out and most chicken is cooked so that chicken doesn't run out (this is done because generally from start to finish original takes about 20 minutes to reach the customer).
Before anyone starts saying you shouldn't hold food for 1 and a half hours it really isn't possible any other way and because it is pressure cooked so the internal temperature reaches 175 degrees the chicken doesn't lose moisture because of rather than the internal juices evaporating the chicken gets cooked by them i.e. pressure cooker so the chicken doesn't dry out for an hour and a half the problem is when the door to the keep warm cabinets is left open or when there isn't any water left in the keep warm cabinet.

PS the gravy is REAL gravy btw unlike other chicken stores that use packet mix.

    • +3

Can I swap the gravy with potato & gravy?

    • +1

I can't see too many KFC's swapping the sides in this $2 box, even if the KFC policy says it is allowed. I have enough of an issue ordering any of the $10-$11 combo meals and trying to swap original chicken for hot and spicy. I swear, more than a few KFC stores won't do it if the sign says "original", even if they sell the two for the same amount. Really irks me.

      • Also regarding the gravy, I've heard different things from different employees. Is it definitely made the same way across all stores and states? Given some states have different menu items, it wouldn't shock me that some also prepare the gravy differently.

        • +3

it wouldn't shock me that some also prepare the gravy differently.

I also used to work at KFC. The potato is always packet/powder mix. I'd be surprised if any of the stores claim to use fresh potatoes to make the Potato and Gravy.. There's a reason why they advertise the chicken is made fresh instore (and only that, nothing more)
The brown gravy itself can either be packet mix, or the sludge of crumbs(chicken fines) at the bottom of the fryer, this is then filtered through a metal sieve so a crumbless sludge will be used. The fines are obtained when they filter out the oil (they never really chuck away the oil for the fryers, just keep topping up on daily-filtered oil.
The chicken itself, yes it is delivered daily, but most likely the ones you eat are delivered from 1 to 3 days before (maybe even more) but they're always refridgerated.
Something I'd like to mention is they (managers) told us to change the little tag (we used ones like the breadloaf bag tags but with a little piece of paper attached to it) for where the time of expiration (1.5 hours) once it expires. This practice occurred at the store I worked for, until the customer noticed it (the 'expired'/cooked chicken became very dry), or if the manager was expecting someone that was inspecting the cleanliness of the store + customer serivce (know as CHAMPs program, like an internal mystery shopper, can't remember what it stands for anyway, but it was the store's incentive to keep up quality standards, bonus cash or something for perfect 100 score)

        • Thanks. I was certain I had heard that the gravy may in fact be packet mix depending on where you go.

        • Sometimes the sieve thing is stuffed up, that's when they use the packet mix until it's fixed, this sieve thing is usually at the bottom of some KFC specific warmer, "Kentucky Fried Chicken system" I recall was on this warmer, and the sieve/tray thing that drip filters the crumbs out of the oil is on the bottom.

        • When I was a cook it was thrown out every week unless oil had run out and then it was done the following day. If you kept using the same oil the chicken would eventually just come out black.

    • +5

The gravy is real, but the stuff they use to make it, eww.

      • I don't understand this mentality sure it is using oil and chicken scraps/debris that falls off the pieces during cooking but isn't that better than a packet mix of who knows what?

        • Have you seen it? It just looks gross.

        • sure it is using oil and chicken scraps/debris that falls off the pieces during cooking

It's a thick brown sludge, like a coke slushie, except hot.

but isn't that better than a packet mix of who knows what?

At least with packet mix it's like gravinox… just full of sodium :p

  • +6

I tried to buy this last week after seeing it on tv and the drive thru skank told me that you could only buy it with the purchase of a meal deal.

  • +1

This is the standard price and they've been around a while.

  • I tried it, didn't like the chicken, the chips were soft. Not a bargain to me!

  • I wouldn't mind a box of grilled chicken fillets though. I'd feel slightly less guilt pigging out!

  • Come on guys, this isn't a OZB worthy deal.

  • Tried it last week. I LOVED the chicken piece and am now looking forward to trying the Twister Max that has the grilled chicken in it. But all you people complaining… it's a taster box… it's $2. Yes it was small, but it was what I was expecting. $2 if half the price of a snack box…and well, that's what you get, do not expect anything else. $2 probably isn't bad for a piece of chicken (mine was not even close to the size of a finger like people are saying - much bigger), chips and gravy… not sure where else you would get that for $2.
Having said that, is it a "bargain" though worthy of this site, I say no…

  • I tried it last week and was shocked to see how small the chicken was! Essentially paying for the chips, so not a bargain in my books.

    • +2

I guess they're not joking about it being a taster … "here, just have a little taste" :) Might be good for those with little ones though.

  • +6

Echoing the sentiments of many others here… the chicken piece is small, dry, and tastes horrible. You get a few soggy chips and a tub of 'gravy'. Not even worth it for $2.

  • +2

have to agree with matt, i posted a comparison photo on kfcaustralia, plenty of agreed unsatisfied customers!

  • +1

Mate of mine sent me a photo that looked worse than the one posted above, not even worth the time it takes to go to KFC let alone $2…

  • -1

    Not worth it's value.

  • +1

The best thing kfc had for $2 has got to be that $2 sub, now THAT was worth it!

  • Boycotting kfc.
Bought this the other day. Tiny chicken and minimal chips. After requesting more chips so my box looks like the picture they said "We have to use a (tiny) scoop to measure how many chips you get" wtf… maccas never had a problem with giving me more chips.

  • +1

The taster box you get looks nothing like the ad picture … deceitful advertising by KFC. They need to fire their management for thinking up this stinker of a deal

  • had this yesterday. the chicken "strip" was smaller than my pinky finger. lol.

  • +1

    I'm neg'ing too.
My piece was the size of a chicken nugget.

  • -1

Reckon the new twister combo is better value for money. You get :
A twister max or BLT ( http://www.kfc.com.au/menu/index.asp#NewTwister ) with small chips and a can for only $6.95.

  • +5

Still doesnt beat my $2 mcdouble or chickncheese plus small fries and free medium soft drink(student edge) for $3

    • +2
    • you're lucky your student edge works with the cheap change menu, the guy at myer centre BNE maccas told me I can't unless I buy full priced items…

      • Ring Maccas head office and tell them that he won't honour it.

  • +2

Did anyone watch Food Inc. on SBS the other night? Powerful stuff.

  • Tried these today, the piece of chicken is TINY, nothing about 1/3 of the size shown in the picture!

  • No deal

  • haha i got 3 of these based on the comments… i think i counted 16 chips and then i was confused whether there were another 3 more chips…. but they were allegedly pieces of chicken…

  • +1

Local green grocer is selling Kensington Mangoes for $2.
How would posting that as a deal differ to this KFC slop?

  • It's approximately just longer than a chicken nugget, but not wider.. So it's around the same.. Horrible deal.. Sorry… -1..

  • -4

Quit complaining, it's only $2, if you don't Like it, then buy something else or else where, no ones forcing you to buy it.

  • +1

So, we just post ads for Big Fast Food now?

  • After seeing "first in line"'s photo, I was interested in seeing what I would get… http://tiny.cc/l9b1qw

  • Far far far far from a bargain!
