Mobile Plans - Family of 5 (It's Getting Pricey and I Am Swapping Every Other Month!)

Amaysim, Boost, Catch, Felix and Moose Mobile are my current providers for the 5 family members as we progressively moved off the much more expensive boost and then the Amaysim 50% rebate expired…

(Felix sucks btw on data bandwidth and so does Catch - moose 12.50 for 6 months actually been surprisingly good)

I checked this post https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/893569 - but only for mayor mobile co's… and works out much more expensive…

Any advice from smart ozbargainers here to manage a family of 3 teenagers plus parents… data allowances can be small (10GB per month) with ample wifi access.

Thx!

Best results so far (For me)
- Aldi family plans for 2/4/6 members sharing a large data pool. Still pricey at $95 per month for 4 sims, 100GB per month - approx $285 per sim per year (vs sales at $150 - 180)… this is Telstra network though

  • Superloop family plan adding onto broadband (also Telstra) with discounts scaling per month for each sim

  • Amaysim Woolworths Sales https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/910928 means I am still going to do them all manually again… - Maybe I can line them all up to expire in two batches…

Especially if you got in before the price rises last year… We still have the $170 Everyday mobile annual plans in my account and 10% off a shop…

      • i believe the 10% off is no longer available with cheaper plans. only more expensive 5G plan get to enjoy that.

        • i believe the 10% off is no longer available with cheaper plans.

It still works fine for those already on those plans.

@jv: well in this case it won't help OP much.

            • @OMGJL: unless they get access to a time machine.

    • Optus prepaid currently on sale
Doesn’t help today but was also $100-$150 cashrewards a few days ago

Look at aldi mobil family plans
    They use telstra wholesale network
upto 6 numbers on one plan starting from $55 a month
The data is shared and any unused data rolls over into a data bank

    https://www.aldimobile.com.au/collections/family-plans

    • They use telstra wholesale network

For some reason, the aldi one gets worse reception than other Telstra MVNOs.

      • Good? Different!

        • In this case ,shit ,different.

    • This!!. You can control the data for every account as well.

    • That is very much what I am looking for!

Too bad about the reception… but if feels like all the MVNOs have gone to crap
Moose mobile has been very good with their 6 months offer for what you get/pay… but a hassle to keep changing.

Thank you… this is exactly what I was hoping (pool data, allocation, pooled numbers)

EDIT: ah, its $95 per month for four, 22.50 each or 285 per year per sim… that is still pricey… (vs $240 4G for individual… the family plan is a lot more annual data, but certainly limited benefit in terms of total cost and more)

  • coles mobile is cheap and good if you are okay with optus network

    • yeah, we've been optus MVNO since slowly dropping boost…

The moose full optus is good / better than amaysim and fields better than catch (dead now anyway)… but not Telstra coverage (which I know is less for MVNO)

Superloop was the other option - I but broadband off them…

10% off a Woolworths shop a month per account could make it almost free. With 3 teenagers 10% off the weekly shop is significant I imagine.

Also has data gifting if you need to shuffle some around.

This is what I do, but on a grandfathered long expiry plan not available to new customers. Sadly they removed the 10% from those plans.

    • Sadly they removed the 10% from those plans.

Not for those already on the plans. Only for newly opened plans.

      • "This is what I do, but on a grandfathered long expiry plan not available to new customers"

    • Came here to say this, although it's a little harder to manage.

We currently have three award accounts with different mobiles tied to each for that 10% off three times a month (Plus we currently pay the $7 / month for the extra bonus thing that gives an extra 10% once a month as it's easily worth more than the $7 we pay).

The downside is all the other bonus points that add up to $10 off are spread across the cards, although I suppose you end up with the same aggregate at some point. We try and make sure that the discounts at least reach the value of the mobiles so they are effectively free!

I've just migrated the last two accounts over but couldn't be bothered setting up two more accounts. It also doesn't help that we are moving towards more smaller shops than single larger shopping trips where you could get the maximum benefit (which is capped at $50 per shop).
