You can stay and buy your own return ticket.

  • Any advice on sim/esim plans in china?

    • +8

Trip.com has reasonably priced esims for mainland China that comes with VPN. Everything worked flawlessly. Don't buy a local sim card as Google, Facebook and WhatsApp won't work.

    • +1

get a HK sim card on discount from ozbargain. also highly recommend getting a proxy for wi-fi use https://a.500ml.nl/

    • I used Sims Direct (now Simify) and on my non-eSIM phone, a $20 Felix roaming plan. Both were easy to use and worked well in China

    • I normally go with 3HK for travelling e-sims, especially for China.

You'd want one that is from outside of China if you want to use Facebook, Instagram, Google/Gmail etc

      https://web.three.com.hk/prepaid/travellerssim/index-en.html

Look at their "DIY Prepaid SIM" options. All prices are in HKD.

      • Second 3HK. Quite easy to set up and use but the app won't download unless your Google or Apple account is set to Hong Kong. So you might need to use the website or email for activation? If someone can confirm that would be great. But I know the app needs HK account.

        • To activate the e-sim, it can be done via web/email/QR code.

But to verify your identity (for usage in Hong Kong only), you may need to get onto customer support chat via website and they can send you a link to verify if you can't download their app.

It does sound not as straight forward, but once setup it's a breeze to use and top up, as I normally buy the 365 days packages and have had the account for the last 5-6 years.

          • @Charles89: Hey thank you for sharing this info! Will be useful in case I can't access my service on the app.

    • I roamed on Telstra. $10 per day. The firewall did not apply - Full access to everything I tried. All Google services, All Facebook services including Whatsapp etc. All news sites. Google maps seemed offset to your current location at times, but an app called Amap worked well. I highly highly recommend setting up Alipay before you leave Australia. Made life very easy. Avoid the street food.

      • With Optus, they do $5 per day for 5GB of data. But yes, set up Alipay or WeChat pay prior to landing, because 99.9% of places will take Alipay or WeChat pay, whereas credit card, less so.

  • $8.88 and I'm in

Genuine review from someone who has just returned from similar tour by TripADeal. The tour is a great value for money and great introduction to China if it is your first time. The hotels, transport and guides were all fantastic. The country is clean and safe. Yes, there are shopping stops and sales pitches. However, there is no pressure from the guides or even from the sales people to force you buy something you don't want. We didn't buy a single thing at these places. Once they finish their sales pitch we just chilled in the lounge or went our own way to see some attractions not part of the tour.

The tipping is not common in China but I personally think the guides and drivers deserve the tip. The guides took care of everyone from helping with ordering food, exchanging money and giving shopping tips. On the first day of guide jokingly said she is our Chinese mother for the duration of the tour and it's not an exaggeration if I say she cared that much throughout the tour.

The optional tours are usually expensive and sometimes double the actual price. Sometimes they are not avoidable as otherwise you will have to wait for few hours on bus without aircon on hot summer. For those that are in the city like the river cruise in Shanghai we booked it ourself and booked Didi which costed less than half the tour price.

On the last day we and few others even skipped the planned itinerary and optional tour and went to Disneyland. Our guide even arranged transport for us as it's hard to catch Didi while returning from Disneyland.

All those negative reviews you see on the internet are from long back and things have improved a lot. China was beautiful and so advanced. While language is a barrier, the guides and translation apps made it easy to navigate. Alipay is a must if you are planning to go. You pay with Alipay everywhere, book Didi and order food all from Alipay.

Having said all this, I did consider AVG travels for my China trip but the bad reviews scared me, so went with TripADeal.

    • +1

May I ask, I have heard from some reviews (not this specific tour per se) that accommodation for these cheap tours is often way out from the tourist districts meaning once you've finished the activities planned for the day, you're essentially stuck in the middle of nowhere like an hour taxi ride away from where all the fun is. Would you say that is at all true in your experience, or somewhat exaggerated? not sure how comfortable I would be getting a taxi so far :|

      • +2

Yes, some of the hotels we stayed in were 20 to 30 mins drive away from city centre. Having said that most of them have one or more restaurants and some were actually right beside a large shipping centre. After a long day you usually won't want to go too far out for dinner. If you do, Didi is quite cheap and the wait times are usually 5 to 10 mins only. Also, although the hotels are far from city centre they are still high class hotels with clean and spacious rooms.

        • Thanks for your feedback!

      • +1

Also, sometimes you may get hotel close to city centre if there are multiple groups and the regular hotels are all booked out. During our tour there were 18 TripADeal groups doing the same tour. We stayed close to the CBD in Holiday inn in Shanghai. Our guide was also surprised because they never booked that hotel before.

      • +1

Went on one with tripadeal about 3-4 weeks ago. The hotels that I went to were 30 minutes to an hour away from the city centre, however sometimes they were close to a shopping centre or a walks distance away from a convenience store and resteraunts.

        • +1

but you should not be far away from shops and restaurants, cities in China are huge.

    • Our guide even arranged transport for us as it's hard to catch Didi while returning from Disneyland.

Disneyland in Shanghai? Did you buy express passes?

      • +3

No, we didn't. It was rainy day, the crowds weren't that bad. And the people were surprisingly quite disciplined. There was no pushing or jumping queues.

    • Sometimes they are not avoidable as otherwise you will have to wait for few hours on bus without aircon on hot summer.

Do you mind if I ask if you can just leave during this time and do your own thing instead and then make your own way back to the hotel that evening?

      • Yes, you are free to do whatever you want. You just need to make sure you are back at the meeting point on time or arrange your own transport to the hotel. On one occasion half of our group chose not to do optional activity and same with another group doing the same itinerary on that day. The guides arranged for one of the bus to go back to the hotel with people not doing the activity.

Would they try to sell you property, then try to sell you property and if you decline the first few times, try to sell you other property?

What is the average age of the humans in the tour?

    • +1

      88

    • Depends on your luck. Our group was 60% retirees, rest young to middle aged couples.

    • Looking to pick up or..?

      • We’re seeing if we’re too young for the tour scene

        • +1

I found talking to the various age groups quite insightful. Especially the retirees talked to us more than the young bunch who were in their own world. Also, feels to good to be youngest in the group 😀.

Flights from Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth attract a $400 surcharge.

Airline Selection: We book the best available airlines for your journey, which may include a mix of full-service and low-cost carriers. Specific airline requests can be made at the time of purchase. This includes upgrades to your preferred carrier, premium economy or business class cabins or specific seats. Whilst we will try our best, not all requests can be confirmed.

Flight Conditions: Flights may not be direct and could involve a maximum of two transits.

    • Yup. Got Cathay Pacific instead due to this

    • +1

When we went we got China Eastern both ways. The big advantage was that the flights were MEL-SHANG-BEIJ and then SHANG-MEL. Excellent airline, would fly with them again in a second.
A couple we know got Singapore Airlines, MEL-SIN-BEI and SHANG-SIN-MEL on the way back

      • Hey @branners - can I ask if you were given a booking ref and able to seat select ahead of time?
I did enquire this with Trip A Deal and got two different answers. One agent said it is a group booking for the flights and because of that you cannot seat select until you check in at the airport. The other agent said that this might not be the case, you may be able to manage your flight online and seat select but it depends how they book it - but you wont know until closer to the time.

        • +1

Gday. No, we did not get to select a seat, when we got to the airport the seats were assigned. My Mrs and I actually ended up in separate rows but I was next to 2 TADers on the same tour and she was next to one, so we swapped. The China Eastern crew were happy for us to move.
On the SHANG-BEI flight we were separated again but it was 90 mins and we did not bother (we were both next to other TADers again). Seated together on the flight home

          • @branners: Thanks very much for sharing (even though it wasn't the answer I was hoping for, haha!)

Comments here are exactly why Aussie tourists are ranked top 5 worst in the world. Well overrepresented considering our population.

The price of the tour is dirt cheap and people are shocked at spending an extra cent that gives people on slave level wages a job.

    • -4

      corrections:
      1. price of the tour is dirt cheap - for us yes, for the locals there no
      2. gives people on slave level wages a job - for us yes, for the locals there no

      • +14

I don’t know how you got this kind of comments. I am from China. I go back to China every 6 months to visit my parents. Is usually go with cheap flights but it still costs me $550-750 return. The price of this tour, take out the flights and transportation and accomodation and breakfast. Tell me this is not dirty cheap. Tell me you believe the tour guide and drivers make a lot of money out of it.

I didn’t know Aussie tourists are rated top 5 worst but your comments proved it true.

      • +2

Why would the locals go on the tour?

        • I can’t find anything at this price m. 9 nights, return flights and transportations. I can go with you guys and then find my favourite food and places. Meet with my friends at Beijing Shanghai Hangzhou. If any concert nearby, I will take bullet trains to go. Also, Beijing is only 2.5 hours away from my hometown. I could go home if I choose too.

The only thing I consider is my annual leave hours. Opportunity cost.

          Do you need more reasons?

Trip a Deal tour was excellent, well organised and great value for money.
Air fares and 9 nights at a four star hotel alone is worth more than the $999 cost, plus $120 tips.
They also provided free tours to Great wall, Forbidden City etc took us to four different cities including Beijing and Shanghai.

I am from China too and I responded to some comments under this post. I am surprised to see you were surprised to see China got reputation of forced shopping. It is common in China. I am sure you know it. You cannot not know.

I actually think it is already friendly for foreigners and thankfully it is.

Hope it keeps improving. Hope people in China can improve their living soon. It is not easy there.

Did this tour with my partner in 2019. Wasn’t expecting too much but it ended up being such a memorable trip.

Each day began with a mandatory visit to a “specialty shop” where staff would give a brief lesson on the products; jade, pearls etc. You had the option to browse and buy, but there was never any real pressure to make a purchase.

Each hotel we stayed at was clean and very pleasant. Was nice that each hotel had a buffet breakfast, but Beijing’s was the standout. We stayed at the Ramada by Wyndham. Not sure if they still do this, but we had to give the hotel staff our passports during our entire stay.

We opted out on all optional activities so that gave us the opportunity to freely explore, and sort of made it more our own trip. Didi was very simple to use and just paid in cash.

Noticed this deal gets an extra day in Shanghai which is great. Shanghai is awesome! Also highly recommend the Peking Duck at Siji Minfu on Denshikou road when you’re in Beijing.

    • Did you offer to supply a colour photocopy of your passport to the Ramada?

I really thought you had to carry your passport around with you in China. Perhaps times have changed.

In 2015 hotels didn't ask to keep my passport. (Independent travel).

      • Might of been a weird one off thing. Went recently and they just took a photo. Every hotel has to lodge with the local police that a foreign guest is checking in. They have better systems now to make it easier so they can do it quickly during check in.

I did the 10-day version of this trip, on TripADeal, on March 2024. It was great and my wife and I are considering how and when we will go back to China. Ditto for now-five other couples to whom we recommended the trip.
None of the stops 'forced' purchases and the tipping was not one each for the driver and the guide.
Hotels were great, food was terrific and the extra day in Shanghai makes me think that we might just go back…
I have posted about it in the past and I am happy to answer any questions OzBers might have

    • Did you do any independent travel away from the tour group?

  • +1

The forcing thing i believe was true, 10 years ago. Not anymore. Or much less. Go and dont worry too much.

A lot of comments in discussion about how good the TripADeal version is, is AVG Travels comparable? Would it be the same tour/tour guides but just advertised via different travel websites?

    • My understanding is that the guides work across differently branded tours. When we were there our Beijing guide had a Wendy Wu tour next; our Shanghai guide had a group incoming from a European brand tour
