How do you measure units of 'environment' so you know if it's being 'saved' or not?
not sure how many drivers cares about emission claims, it actually got drivers better mileage, and people seem more concerned about fuel consumption than emissions. there are people who reprogram their cars ECU to get more power, don’t think they care about emissions, doubt people would pay for lower emissions and less power or worse mileage software.
The point was that Volkswagen fitted cheat devices to their cars so they would stay within emission regulations when tested, this resulted in higher performance than the cars should've had. Volkswagen had to correct the issue which resulted in higher fuel consumption and reduced performance for owners of impacted vehicles, basically they no longer had what they paid for.
Which is exactly why emission regulations are needed and written in law.
If people won’t do it themselves, the problem will worsen over time until it’s too late.

Try not to be so gullible with common plot devices, especially when it involves make you pay more for things. This is OzBargain, not Oz-I've-been-scammed-into-paying-more-for-less-by-cheap-tricks.

I already said you shouldn't fall for common plot device tricks, and you respond by showing us all how you fell for yet another one.
TDS is real. Seek help.
If drivers care about kilometrage (non-archaic ISO term;), then 5.4L/100 fuel usage is another false claim for naive buyers. In my case, avg.~8L/100 in city driving, even with their inferior stop/start system (compared to Holden).
This is practical car, but I'm waiting for BYD Seagull or equivalent for better value city car. They are ~30% better value than any EU & ~15% better than Tesla (it comes from DeepSeek wisdom ;)
I'd personally go for fuel consumption over emissions, knowing that anything western countries do to reduce emissions is a waste of money when countries like China and India aren't kept to the same standards.
It would be better to buy a pre scandal VW than a current model.
Australia does produce only 1.1% of the world's climate emissions, but it has just 0.3% of the world's population. It is one of the highest emitters per capita in the world, mainly because of its high coal use (the most polluting of all fossil fuels except tar sands). Successive governments have only committed to more coal use.
While China produces far more emissions and pollutions than Australia in absolute terms, it also has 56x the population of Australia. Per capita, China's emissions are significantly lower than Australia's, and they have invested massive amounts in renewables (in some years installing more renewables than the rest of the world put together). Let's not forget that a huge amount of China's emissions and resource use also goes to produce stuff for rich countries, including Australia - these are counted as China's, despite being effectively generated by Australia/Europe/North America.
If everyone lived like the average Australian, we'd need around four Earths to sustain us all. If everyone lived like the average Chinese person, we'd need just over one Earth, or like the average Indian, 0.5 Earths.
Seems like a free add-on, should be added to the title.
Not to be a defender of VW, but I really hate this arguably unfair flack they get for diesel gate. Basically every auto manufacturer cheated emissions, VW were just the ones that got caught. If anything, VW cheated their emissions much less than others.
Diesel emissions scandal - Wikipedia - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_emissions_scandal
It started with VW yes, and they denied it to the last minute and beyond.
There are still a number of VW executives at the time who have arrest warrants by US authorities against them.
That's Capitalism principle: Profit above Customer needs. Start with iPhones, which are among the worst for SAR radiation (eg. iPhone 12 banned in France, 5-10x the Galaxy Note 10+ on head SAR)
That's Capitalism principle: Profit above Customer needs.
Lol, Just think about how insane this comment is for second. Capitalism (a free market exchange between buyer and seller) relies 100% on the customer choosing the products they like the best. You as a seller only profit when you give Customers what they want.
Start with iPhones, which are among the worst for SAR radiation
So if you feel that is not what you 'need' don't buy one. See how easy that is? Tell me how CaPiTiLiSm is forcing you to buy a phone that you don't want or need?
For bonus points now do that same test for Communism and tell me which one is better for the 'customer'.
it's pointless, but this is internet, so it won't stop until the brand exists =) .
I really hate the fact that they are so slow to bring in their technological capabilities outside of EU.
This. Most euro manufacturers should have been fined. They were all cheating..
Did they ever?
118TSI twin charge
what an amazing engine though (apart from the exploding)
Precisely.
No they don’t.
It’s a weird things that some claim.
My 13 year old TSI VW Golf is still going strong.
It’s been my best car ive owned, and I’ve owned a few different car brands.
And yea… I’m old
It’s more the DSG (dry clutch) that’s the issue
I had this die in mine at about 4 years expensive fix. Would never buy another DSG VW.
I’ve had 3 VW and now 2x Audis. All been great cars. Get them correctly serviced.
The DSG is a dream to drive.
@Kustard King: I've had a Golf and an 2x Octavias. Both Octavias (7sp dry clutch) had DSG issues. And they drank engine oil.
Serviced 100% as per schedule, and I don't drive like a maniac.
I agree though that they are very nice cars to drive.
At what point do we move past this?
Do you also refer to VW at the nazi/hitler supporting brand too?
that's strange language
its a product, you can just not buy VW products… you dont have to 'move past' anything… just get something else lol
you dont have to 'move past' anything… just get something else lol
Sure, you can 'get something else', but there's a difference between 'just getting something else' and 'getting something else while moaning about the thing you didn't get for years on end'. I think this is OP's point.
Still in the courts
Heh considering the 'free pass' given to Mitzubishi … in that peeps forget that Mitzubishi manufactured planes that actually participated in bombing Darwin in WWII

At what point do we move past this?
how about never and you learn to look beyond those comments lol =D
Should see the BMW logo back in the day eh..
I did some work for a Chinese metals refining company. When it came to emissions testing, some people here asked how they passed - "oh that's easy, when we're doing testing we swap to the good ore".
Absolutely everyone will try something on if they think they can get away with it. It happens across the globe, at all scales.
Anyone here NOT sped through an orange light huh?
Absolutely everyone will try something on if they think they can get away with it. It happens across the globe, at all scales.
Yep it's called being competitive and every animal on earth exhibits those traits.
And they way you win at being competitive is to be better than your competition, because this is what drives all progress. People who call themselves 'progressives' need to learn how that works.
It's a 1.0L turbo, hold onto your hats. Living in the age of the last hurrah of the fossil fuel car.
We still going on about 10 years later?
85kw… lol
I’ve driven one of these, they are slow as shit
how fast do you need to go commuting into work in the new suburbs or inner city, find traffic congestion affects speed more than the engine in my car. if you live in the country it’s different and rive at 100km and need more zip for over taking.
Get a newer swift sport turbo that's actually nice to drive, easy to park, spanks this in a straight line or in the hills, and can be got barely broken in for 5k-10k less with all the same features.
Only downside is 1 star ancap rating. It's a death trap.
@ozzy1: I thought you were taking the urine but just checked and it’s true 🤣 how do you even get a modern car passed if it’s 1star
@ChocclateThunda: You're looking at the previous model.
Current one: https://www.ancap.com.au/safety-ratings/suzuki/swift/0315bd
Edit: oh right, the current model doesn't have a turbo sport model, so has to be the previous one.
@ol mate: You're right on your main point, how DO you sell a car with 1 Ancap star?
What a death trap.
@eddyah: Having just given away my Swift Sport to a family member, and purchased a new Subaru Outback, I'd have to agree. Outbacks are for lazy cowards. With receding hairlines, buckteeth, eyes too close together and dodgy knees. Which they can't see because of their food-baby bellies.
I do feel a bit sorry for insane motorbike riders though. The kind who roar around like they're in a video game, having just done meth and a cone. Eventually their luck runs out. 100% guaranteed. Then if they survive, they're maimed for life, living with pain every day. And even less attractive to a potential partner than an ageing boomer in a 5 star car.
Outbacks are for lazy cowards. With receding hairlines, buckteeth, eyes too close together and dodgy knees. Which they can't see because of their food-baby bellies.
That's a very odd way to describe lesbians.
@Pacify: wow 15 downvoters that don't know anything about ANCAP.
it's a total scam that means cars only score a 5 if they have all the 'safety technology' in place to alert you when you're not paying attention while driving.
our model y scored 5 on the rating and like I said, when we bought it we DIDN'T buy it because of the ANCAP rating.
You've got to be brain dead if you think that's actually a thing that matters when buying a car. These things get crash tested by safety bodies around the world, yet somehow Australia are 'special' and we need our own governing body and standards.
Not to mention, a 5 star ANCAP car from 10 years ago is like 1 star.
@eddyah: a standard is better than a vibe. what's the alternative? agree with stars not being everything, but it's easy to through the full ANCAP breakdown to see where they lost marks.
@V2L: Lol braindead person spotted.
I've already said there are other standards across the world that test car safety. No point dragging manufacturers to do repeated crash testing for each car they make.
And if you're buying a used car, it'll never score as highly as a new car for an equivalent ANCAP (or any other safety) test. So why is it perfectly acceptable to go, 'oh new car 5 star ANCAP good buy!', but then purchase or recommend a second hand car with no regard for what that car would score on a newer ANCAP rating?
Most cars are so well built these days and you could figure out very easily from overseas crash testing if it was a lemon in a crash on wheels. ANCAP is bureaucracy under the guise of a safety board.
@eddyah: of course standards will continue to evolve as safety features evolve. why would anyone with half a brain cell think an 5* from 10 years ago means the same as 5* now?
NCAP or ANCAP or euro NCAP are all still standards. so now your problem is not with having testing standards but specifically ANCAP? make up your mind about what you want to yell at clouds about today
a standard is better than a vibe. what's the alternative?
Do you know what the A in ANCAP stands for? Do you know how many cars are made in that place? Do you think that somewhere where the cars are made also does testing so maybe it's a duplication of effort?
That is an alternative, and it would save millions in taxpayer dollars.
And like OP said, if you understood how the later ANCAP standards work you'd realise how much of a scam it is. My car is not 'safer' because it now has 10 warning bells instead of 5. Seatbelts, Crumple-zones, ABS, TCS, etc yes. ALC, AEB, a dozen different warning beep and bloops no. The people enforcing these 'standards' are just keeping themselves employed at this point.
@1st-Amendment: Exactly it's a game where the goal posts move.
Yes there needs to be a standard put in place, but we don't need one for Australia.
so now your problem is not with having testing standards but specifically ANCAP? make up your mind about what you want to yell at clouds about today
I have multiple problems with ANCAP, and a separate problem with people that would only buy a car with a 5 star ANCAP rating - make sense? You've got to be brain dead to be looking at cars and going, 'only ANCAP 5 cars are good cars' - it shows a lack of understanding.
The motorbike comment is meant as an example as to why buying for 'safety' is cowardice. It promotes a culture where dummies justify their SUV purchase for 'safety'. I bought an SUV because it's more practical and fits more in and we can load the kids in easier. ANCAP was not something we bothered to care about.
@eddyah: I don't disagree 5* means little at face value without looking at how they arrived at it and the breakdown, but to say standards are useless because of that is a bit of a reach
@V2L: I never said standards are useless - I said ANCAP is as there are already governing bodies for this.
Separately only cowards think 'oh gotta have a 5 star ANCAP before I buy it'. If that's a criteria for a good car to you, then I judge thee a coward.
It's literally my opinion that I'm sharing with you guys on OzBargain. I voice it strongly because I try and change perspectives on it but if you wanna go ahead and judge every car by it's ANCAP rating, so be it.
Just my opinion the ANCAP system is pointless and to judge a car by that is to judge a car by the range of colours it offers out of the factory (another useless metric - imagine car reviewers scoring a car on that…)
I never said standards are useless - I said ANCAP is as there are already governing bodies for this.
Australia does use Euro NCAP safety ratings unless the cars sold in Australia are substantially different compared to what's sold in Europe. Which is why the Swift was re-tested in Australia.
without looking at how they arrived at it and the breakdown
I looked did you?
Let me help you out by asking ChatGPT on your behalf:
Vehicles are assessed across four key pillars:
- Adult Occupant Protection – Measures injury risk to adult passengers in various crash scenarios (frontal, side, whiplash, etc.).
- Child Occupant Protection – Evaluates how well the car protects children in child restraints and how easy it is to install them.
- Vulnerable Road User Protection – Assesses the risk posed to pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists in a collision.
- Safety Assist – Tests the effectiveness of active safety technologies like autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane support systems, and speed assistance.
3 of those 4 things are things I don't care for.
So a 1 star could be equally safe to me as a 5 star for things I care about. I sold my last car because AEB nearly killed me. How is that safe?
So you asked about alternatives. Reading the fine print and ignoring things you don't care about is another alternative to just blindly accepting their rating system.
@ozzy1: Try 5 stars https://s3.amazonaws.com/cdn.ancap.com.au/app/public/assets/…
You don't want the hybrid anyway, and my point remains.
You forgot the best bit. Not having to slow down for corners or roundabouts.
The joy of watching a tailgater in their dual cab hilux almost roll their car, as they attempt to stay on your tail through a roundabout. Priceless.
The joy of watching a tailgater in their dual cab hilux almost roll their car,
The joy of watching the same (profanity) end up 200m behind after a corner, to then roar past you 30 seconds later doing 90 in a 50 zone to salve their bruised ego.
I put a greddy intake on mine. Hilarious turbo sounds, and all street legal. Living the dream. Next car will be electric.
@Ademos: The 90 in a 50 zone is so true . Cracks me up every time .
This T-Cross seems ridiculously underpowered. My 2017 Astra gets 5.6l/100 and has 148kw with 280nm . My milage is mostly freeway but it's 4:45PM through Perth at 25km/h .
This T-Cross seems ridiculously underpowered
Power is less important than torque for city driving. This is 200Nm and only 1240kg, so will do the job most people will use it for.
@1st-Amendment: The fuel economy just seems poor for the lack of power .
If it had Toyota like reliability I could sort of see past that .
struggling when pulling out onto a busy road or going uphill and watching all the cars zoom past or tailgate you gets old after a day or two
Our ford fiesta econetic was 66kw, and we still miss how much fun it was to drive. Numbers aren't everything.
I guess power output doesn't consider vehicle weight. Imagine the Fiesta would have been pretty light
Power to weight is the issue. These SUV crossovers are way heavier than their hatch counterparts.
T-ROC is around 1.5T. Polo with the same engine is around 1.1T. Add in the higher center of gravity, and it will feel much worse to drive.
Really hoping this trend dies of putting everything on stilts and adding weight, whilst removing aerodynamics with flat faced front ends…
The car market is saturated with rinse and repeat models, with the prices rising every year.
T-ROC is around 1.5T
This is the T-Cross, not the T-ROC which has more power.
whilst removing aerodynamics with flat faced front ends…
T-Cross has a Cd of 0.31 which is the same as Audi A3, Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic etc
Even the $5M Pagani Huayra has the same Cd.
Looked at the brochure. These cars are not for moving, but sitting, listening the 300W music, and enjoy interio lights
or get the Skoda Kamiq (T-Cross equivalent) for a couple grand less and extra 2 years (7 in total) warranty
Digital Cockpit
Travel Assist incorporating Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Assist and Side Assist
LED headlights with Light Assist
Digital Radio DAB+
Park Assist, parking bay and parallel parking assistance
Kamiq is very basic doesn't have these additional features like adaptive cruise etc
Out of those features would miss the ACC and LEDs but then prefer the Kamiq console controls.
ReDriven "Should you buy a USED Volkswagen T-Cross? Here's why we wouldn't… " https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvdo74GM0wo
Very lemony review.
Friend who owns one at their biggest disappointment was the boot now an issue after their first child but then it is the smallest VW in the range. Others who own everything from Golf R Wolfsburg (no issues, simply awesome vehicle), Golf R (Haldex failure, VW blamed third party service centre use of VW approved oil, taken to tribunal, GTI (black engine flakes and water pump replaced) to Golf (engine failure six months after warranty end) and lastly one Polo owner who was missing one of their rear speakers on delivery (how does that even happen?).
The DSG is special in that if you are used to driving a traditional auto you have to adapt your driving style to it - more gentle accelerations of the line and stick to the service schedule.
They really need to step up their game both in product quality and service support.
Good discount if looking for a VW but post sales support is abysmal and those servicing costs 🚀🌙
Find a better local European garage to service it. Never use VW servicing outside of warranty
If anyone was curious how these sit in the VW order of things - T-Cross is basically a raised Polo, T-Roc is a raised Golf. Both nice cars, but definitely considered VWs entry-level small SUV
I had a Polo when it had a 1.8T engine, times have changed…
2017 was the last good year for Polo. 1.8T with 6 speed manual…
Yar, 1st car I modified and enjoyed it to it's FWD limits. Next went to S3 for AWD traction but had less soul.
How is this compared to CX5 maxx sport?
Is VW has a better resale value?
CX5 is a medium sized SUV, the VW is a small one, more comparable with the CX30. Mazda 100% holds it's value far better, it's not even close.
The only thing VW has better is the door closing sound (thunk).
The new CX door close is comparable to VW (i own a CX8 and a Polo)
Agree. The CX-5 is the first Japanese car I’ve had that feels as solid as a European one. Most Japanese cars feel kind of flimsy when you close the doors, but the CX-5 has that sturdy, well-built feel, like nothing’s going to rattle or break.
Like Buddy195 said, VW isn't comparable to Mazda. I owned a Tiguan in the past and drive a CX-5 now. While Tiguan was a little more spacious, I love driving CX-5 and would always pick Mazda over VW if they're the only two options. My Tiguan was a trouble maker for me. It managed to give all sorts of issues; from electrical to engine piston, you name it. On the other hand, being with CX-5 for over 5 yrs now and thankfully still moving us smoothly.
Interesting to hear your experience. I’ve never owned a VW myself, but I did have a 2019 Mazda CX-5 diese. Honestly, it was a huge letdown. The engine blew just after 110,000 km despite always being serviced on time. On top of that, there were plenty of other issues: limited rear seat and boot space for a mid-size SUV, dated and sluggish infotainment, and the ride was firm with noticeable road noise. Visibility wasn’t great either, and to be honest, the gearbox felt pretty average. I wouldn’t buy another one.
Dude Mazda diesel never buy
I owned a Tiguan in the past and drive a CX-5 now.
Same here. Ex Tiguan owner and now CX-5 driver as well.
Owned a brand new Tiguan 2018 (MY 2017) for six years (<66kms). Vehicle was religiously serviced by the dealer. On year 6 (2024), the dreaded mechatronic failure of "Gearbox in Emergency Mode. You can drive on." appeared ("limp mode", gears 1, 3 & 5 would not engage). The dealer arranged for a service car for us while our Tiguan took 10 weeks to fix.
Four days after the Tiguan was fixed, the same gearbox problem reoccured again. This time, we saw the "writing on the wall" (the extended warranty was running out in January 2025 and, after the second failure, the chance of another mechatronix failure was deemed to be unacceptable) and drove the Tiguan straight to the dealer's yard (on a Saturday), handed the keys over, walked across the street to the Mazda showroom and made a deposit for a new CX-5 (MY 2024). Picked up the CX-5 five days later on Wednesday.
When the Tiguan was finally fixed (another 4 weeks), it never left the yard and we "sold it back" to the dealer.
VW DSG issue is very well-known. This particular DSG model, DQ381, is shared among the same class (or weight category) with VW (Golf), Skoda, Audi and SEAT from MY2016 until present.
If we did not purchase the extended warranty with the dealer, the cost would have been north of $7k (quoted only).
Even though the CX-5 that we have is newer, I still miss the Tiguan because it was really fun to drive.
VW is worse than Kia
Now days, yes
Well they only have a 5 year warranty, and a reputation for average reliability. So yes, I see no reason to pay several thousand more than equivalent cars Hyundai Venue or Kia Stonic. Resale value of VWs also poor, congruent with reliability level and higher maintenance costs.
What you do get is a car with a VW badge.
…for what?
We've owned/driven many of each. Just received our new Kia this week.
A constructive post could help others.
With or without fraudulent emissions claims?
