[iOS] Day of The Tentacle Remastered $1.99 @ Apple App Store

1180

Don’t let the title fool you, this game is IMO one of the funniest, best and most memorable games of the early 1990s and this is the remastered version.

The only point n click adventure game better imo is the 1997 masterpiece, Curse of Monkey Island.

I have DOTT on steam too but actually it plays quite well with touchscreen interface too.

Other games that may interest you at $1.99 are:

Full Throttle

Grim Fandango

Such a great game, I'm jealous of anyone who gets to play it now for the first time.

    • +6

I had this game in my early teens but never played it.
Perfect chance now in my 40s!

      • +8

I’m in my late 30s and everytime I play I am transported back to the first time I played it in 1999, (but now in HD remastered). No work or life pressure. School tomorrow. Still got a head full of hair. No crippling addiction to alcohol and caffeine. Life is good.

        • +7

You can replay in another 30 years and recall how good you have it today.

I played this game for the first time last year and thought it was so zany and hilarious. Played Full Throttle and really enjoyed that too. I'm up to Grim Fandango now.

So many great Lucas Arts games!

Then there's Monkey Island, Indiana Jones, and Sam and Max.

  • +2

Good game that launched the SCUMM engine which so many of the late 80's and 90's Lucas Arts adventure titles were built with. Not my favourite though.

    • Which monkey island is your fav?

      • +3

At the time, I have the fondest memories of the original. But overall I think MI2 LeChucks Revenge was the high-water mark.

        • +4

Lechucks revenge was great. Same with Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, which is my favourite

Just played it through on xbox with a 12 and 9 year old and was pleasantly surprised by how much they enjoyed it.it was my first time finishing because disk 7 of 11 had some issue on my copy on the Amiga. Favourite was the Secret…

    • +9

The first SCUMM game was Maniac Mansion, which is also the precursor to the Day of the Tentacle.

SCUMM stands for "Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion".

      • +2

One day I will go back and finish MM game within a game in DOTT but I still always skip it every playthrough..

        • +1

I’m a big fan of SCUMM games but to be honest I’ve never managed to finish one prior to… Last Crusade maybe? It always seemed like too much time investment. Maybe I should have just resorted to walkthroughs.

I need to get around to The Dig sometime.

      • +2

Whoops, I thought this was MM. Was wondering why the op mentioned 90's when MM was made in late 80s.

    • Mate, your username lol.

Just a heads up that ScummVM is free, and plays all these games and a whole lot more.

However, I’m sure Double Fine’s version has platform optimised controls and $2 wont be missed.

    • Just a heads up that ScummVM is free, and plays all these games and a whole lot more.

You still have to buy the game to be able to legally play those games. It just lets you play them on another system.

      • +3

Yep. But I expect most people interested in this have already purchased these games a number of times since their release.

        • You can get Scumm emulator in the App Store now iirc. But it won't play the HD remaster version. These new versions let you toggle between new and old graphics.

Day of the Tentacle and Full Throttle are universal games, it includes the MacOS version too, is available in the Mac AppStore in any case. Grim Fandango isn't, the MacOS version is $5.

    • Not true. Full Throttle MacOS version is a separate purchase.

recently replayed this classic, it made the time on an international flight disappear, a hall of famer

  • Great game - but how does it meet the bargain requirements of OzBargain?

  • +9

Sam and Max hit the road was my favourite from the Lucasart heydays. But DoTT, Full Throttle and Grim Fandango were great too.

    • I have fond memories of Sam and max hit the road but only after struggling for some years as a kid under 10, then finally finding a walkthrough when I had access to internet in high school… the voice acting was great with memorable locations but man some of the puzzles were just so random you read the walkthrough and had to think - well how the hell is anyone supposed to get that? I kind of remember the backgrounds being so busy you had to spend ages trying to figure out which were actually items you could click and interact with… and don’t get me started about the time sensitive parts…

The DOTT remaster in my op also has option you can click to reveal all intractable objects on screen. Saves so much time. (Even though I’ve finished it that many times in over 20 years I got it down to scorched into my memory now)

      • +1

I haven't tried any remaster, but this may convince me because I loved the Lucasart classics as a kid.

You're right though, memories are through rose tinted glases. With the exception of Full Throttle (from memory) there were always a few illogical "logic" puzzles in these games, typically driven by demented humour. The part from DoTT that detracts for me is Maniac Mansion, as a kid irked me how hard that was and not being able to complete it. I thought it was a mini game and not a port.

        • I only recently learned that wasting objects in MM causes you to get hard stuck and you have to start over. No wonder it was so difficult

    • +1

      Outlaws.

  • +1

When it first came out, the story was well written enough to carry the game. The more recent voice acting additions take it to a new level

    • +1

Voice acting was available on the original CD version

Some of the greatest games of all time listed here
