Westacre Dairy Tasty Cheese Block 1kg $8.99 (Was $9.49) @ ALDI

590

Whilst reading the Weekly Times I saw this article and realised ALDI have dropped their price again. Whilst not as low as last years it’s still a good deal.

Personally I buy it above $10/kg and alternate between Cheer and Bega. Bega more frequently because it is Australian made and owned.

Enjoy!

  • How tasty is this?

Quite tasty according to the cheese name

      • +7

Can't be too tasty if it's not called extra tasty

    • +1

      How tasty is this?

      Dairy Tasty

    • -2

This must be a competitor question otherwise its a 1st world problem question.

      • Is the only cheese you have eaten Kraft blue box stored in the cupboard?

        • Wow I can't believe they actually still sell that. Does anyone under 70 actually buy it?

      • +1

I don't understand your comment/point. 90% of comments/questions on this site could be considered "1st world problem questions/comments".

    • +2

We buy it because it's cheap, but it's far from what I would call tasty. It's probably the least tasty tasty cheese I've ever had.

      • How can tasty cheese exist that isn't tasty? This is blowing my mind.

        • +2

It's a conspiracy by big cheese to introduce flavours like "vintage" or "extra tasty" which are actually just what tasty used to be.

      • thanks

    • Not very nice the last time I tried it.
Quite dry and crumbly as well making it difficult to cut slices

The Black & White Colby Cheese in Woolies for $9.30 is much nicer and smoother!

      • We buy the vintage version of this.

  • +3
    • +4

Is that 31 cents more tasty?

    • -2

That White Label Woolies cheese is just awful

      • +6

Hard disagree. It is much more aged with a strong taste. Likely the closest to a "vintage" cheddar in the economical 1kg size.

        • Just for a bit of profiling…what is your thoughts on Dr Oekteker Pizza?

          • @tunzafun001: I don't like the Alfredo sauce that seems to be on them. I tasted a slice of Italian Connection wood fired pizza today and it was ok for frozen.

I like vintage cheddar and dislike most frozen pizza grated plastic cheese.

            • @mskeggs: Hmmm…I think the Oetekkers are actually frisbee's mistaken as pizza!

But I'll give this a try based on its got a vintage taste (maybe just extra salt?)

      • +1

I disagree. We used to buy this weekly buy changed to the white label cheese. Its more flavoursome and we find the Aldi cheeses texture is quite rubbery.

        • -3

"more flavoursome" than crap is not a resounding endorsement… If people understand what cheese is actually supposed to be, then it's not good at all.

      • +1

The white Label Colby is awful, oily melting, rubbery and flavourless haven't tried the Tasty.

      • Care to elaborate?

    • +2

That one is so much better than if has any right to be, been in cheese heaven since I found it!

      • -2

Looks like the old Black and Gold… Which is $8.90 per 1kg any day of the week at our local Foodland.

The budget ColesAldiworths cheeses seem more like erasers than cheese.

        • +3

Nah this much better than the Old & Gold (which was my go to before this white label one) and it doesn’t go mouldy in 2 weeks like the black and gold one was.

          • -2

@lordezekiel: Going mouldy is normally a good sign. Wonder what stops the white label going mouldy.
            Preservatives or salt?
            How much sodium per 100g?

But if Hamza and mskeggs is in…I'll give it a crack.

          • +1

            @lordezekiel: Right..gave it a crack in a cheese toasty…. impressed.

Thanks for the heads up 👍

    • +1

The Black & White Colby variety is very nice indeed!
Went to buy more today and my local Woollies Metro is out of stock of both.

  • My personal choice is mainland extra tasty cheese

    • +1

Agreed, but they stopped making 1kg blocks.

      • I was a mainland extra tasty person too, but it got too expensive. It took me awhile to find a replacement.
Now I get the cheaper one from Coles. The Coles Tasty Cheddar is my go to generic cheese

  • Bega has a better taste in my opinion.

    • +1

      I preferred Coon.

        • Were they shareholders?

What's the point in reporting a protected species?

  • +3

I wish they had the Light Tasty Cheese Block in the 1kg variant. It is $6.99 for 500g.

    • +5

How can it be both light and tasty?

      • +2

I don't know how they do it. I am assuming some sort of witchcraft and or wizardry. Perhaps that is what justifies the $8.99/kg > $13.98/kg price increase.

      • I have had an expensive cheese that was very high protein and almost fat free. Great taste. The protein level maybe is what gives flavour, in the place of fat.
        Possibly a lactose free one.

  • +6

I love Aldi dearly, but they just ain’t it when it comes to cheese. Even if you spring extra for the vintage cheddar, it doesn’t hold a candle to Cracker Barrel.

    • +15

I thought the opposite. For the price, the cheese in Aldi is high quality. Obviously Aldi doesn't have many high-end cheeses, but for the same price as Coles you'd likely get better cheese at Aldi. Or sometimes, for the same price as an Aldi cheese, you wouldn't get any cheese at Coles.

      • 100% agree.

      • +10

Aldi has plenty of high-end cheeses too, Australian and imported from France, Holland, Italy, UK, Cyprus, Spain etc … some in very similar packaging to ones sold at Colesworths for almost twice the price.

        Favourites in our house …
        - Spanish Manchego
        - French L'Ovale
        - Dutch Smoked Cheese
        - Cypriot Halloumi

        • +2

Strongly agreed, it's the only cheese I buy for cheeseboards etc for med-large gatherings - suitably nice to meet anyone's expectations, not so fancy that it's a waste that will go unappreciated.

There's a time and a place for expensive, fancy cheese (a few people with a bottle of wine and a late-night fire, for instance) but if it's a party etc, Aldi cheese clears the bar handsomely. The key is to let the cheese sit out of the fridge for an hour or so ahead of time so it comes to room temp.

      • Aldi obviously have a huge variety of cheeses. I am not talking the high end, specialty cheeses. I'm talking the bog standard cheddar and aged cheddar. You might save a few bucks compared to their colesworth counterparts, but it's the difference between having flavour and ……..not.

      • I mostly agree, although I find this particular "tasty" cheese from Aldi to be not very tasty. Most of their other stuff is good value.

    • Aldi won so many awards at blind tasting competitions that the "Artisan" cheesemakers pressured many of the competitions to set up a separate "low-volume" category.

      https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2013-02-20/aldi-win-prompt…

      • I assure you, aldi is not entering their base level cheddar into any competitions.

IMHO Aldi's basic 1kg Greek Style Yoghurt is much much better than the Colesworth alternatives. Like MUCH better.

      • -1

And Snackos shit all over BBQ shapes for half the cost. I'm not hating on Aldi. I'm hating on their basic cheeses.

        • +1

I found your problem. The only real Shapes worth considering are PIZZA SHAPES.

      • any recs on a close replacement for Chobani yoghurt? I love chobani but haven't found a good (close) replacement.

Their 500g Emporium Brie is IMO the best supermarket cheese you can have in Aus from a quality / price ratio perspective. Much better than blocks of cheese like Belga or this one. We call that "plastic cheese" in France.

    • +1

i don't think i've tried anything that come close to cracker barrel's vintage 36month.

    • The bries and other European style cheeses are good to excellent. But cheddar-wise: no. Too little flavor, even the Aldi vintage is no good.

      • This was exactly what I was saying, but most people didn’t seem to get it. The posted deal is for run of the mill cheddar, so that’s obviously what I was talking about. But I got a million replies saying “Nar you’re wrong, tHeIR sPeCiAlTy cheeses are aWaRd WiNnInG”

    • +1

Yesterday I bought the Cracker Barrel you mentioned. Just tastes like a typical cheddar. In fact, it has that cheap Australian "Tasty" cheddar taste. You need to get an English cheddar if you want something especially good.

Aldi version of Curtis stone: feed your family of 4 for $8.99!

  • +4

Aldi does have great products, but this cheese is bit blah. No real flavour to it, kind of tastes like milk.

    • +2

Yeah agree. Not the best taste. Just got back from ALDI. Coffee beans been sneaking up in price. Was $11.99 few months ago. Today $17.99 (was $14.99 2 or so weeks back). perhaps time to get good brand instead when on sale.

      • So the dark beans are up to $17.99? Medium beans have been at $17.99 for a while I thought. I might be wrong though.

        • Yes, dark beans.

          • @Mikael: Yikes, that's a crazy increase.

            • +1

@HappyPants: Yeah, 66% in a few months. $14.99 was fair rise as haven't been going up much last year or two. But within few months 2. Still got 2 as needed coffee. But might get other brands from now when on sale. First world problems. We do need our coffee though.

              • +1

@Mikael: Wholesale costs for beans has gone through the roof in the last few years. ALDI are among the last to raise their prices.

            • +1

@HappyPants: I'm salty their Choceur choclate bars went from $2.99 to $3.49 to $4.99 now in the space of a few months.
I thought it was their best kept secret vs buying Cadbury and what not from Colesworth.

        • Medium Beans are $19.99 now in Perth stores

      • That's still a bargain, I noticed that Colesworth has jacked up prices by like 20% in the past few weeks.

      • Yeh just noticed that today too.. Coles are usually last to follow, their Simply are still $15 and Urban $18 but expect they will be $18 and $20 next week too.

If you want proper nice tasting strong cheese for similar price, I strongly recommend trying this one at Woolies, ignore the plain packaging, this is as good or better than most the much more pricey name brand cheeses

Never noticed this. Looks like no frills

    • +2

100%. The mainland extra tasty was the most matured tasting cheddar in 1kg, this is better and cheaper.

  • i'm eating (some of) it right now

  • +2

Refering to big block Cheddars only. I'm an aldi fan but NOT when it comes to cheddar. I buy Aldi tasty in desperation (and their so called vintage), swearing I'll never buy again LOL.

The "new" Woolworths Extra Tasty is nice compared to their other crap generic brand from NZ (they take the protein out). Not as good as my all time generic fav - Coles Tasty Cheddar.

Just happened to try Bega for the 1st time in years (was a 1 day special last week at Drakes Rosewood QLD for $9.95). I bought 3 blocks. A nice cheese, different and slightly stronger but at typically $ extra, Ill stick with Coles

Of course Mainland is the best and occasionly splurge for those weekend cheese platters. Slightly off topic - Aldi grated Pizza cheese is tasteless too :(

  • Hoping the coles tasty comes back on special! My personal fave.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/859454

    • That one dropped down to a reasonable price, with much fanfare, and then immediately shot back up. Very sad!

  • can anyone confirm if they contain animal rennet.

EDIT- it contains non-animal rennet. Good for vegans.

    • +6

it contains non-animal rennet. Good for vegans

As long as they don't think too much into the milk part of the ingredients lol

    • I'm confused… won't our vegan friends take issue with the milk aspect?

  • Many seem to think that Woolworths, Aldi and Coles have cheese factories somewhere. As a matter of fact if it's made in Australia must be one of the big names supplying it to them

    • +1

I read the comments again and can't see anyone who said that.

    • After reading this comment I looked for the code on the Aldi pack but couldn't see one unfortunately so not sure who makes it but I seem to remember it being Bega at some stage.

  • Costco do some excellent UK Cheddar (and other cheese).

    Failing that Mainland Vintage.

I'll give the WW one listed above a go and how that is. Cole used to make an Extra Tasty 1kg for a similar price which was pretty good, I wonder if it's the same.?

  • -2

When the French cheese sued A&NZ cheese makers and supermarkets calling cheese cheddar. They had to to pay or change their products to TASTY or some other bullocks.

  • Why are the bega products so expensive? Not just cheddar but across the board. Special cows or workforce 🤨

    • Name, marketing that name, and dairy/transport costs. You can be very sure thay also sell cheese other other brands.

  • Is it still all dry and cracks into small bits when using a cheese slicer?

    • Been buying this since 2016 when Aldi opened in Perth. With two hungry kids we go through a tonne of it, grated & sliced. Never had this issue. Are you storing it correctly?

      • Straight outta the packet does it ive found.
