Supermarkets Increase Price on Store Brand Coffee Beans Again

Just a couple of months after the last increase, saw today Aldi dark roast up again to $18, medium up to $20.

Checked the Woolies site and sure enough theirs are $18 already, only Coles to go.

I tried Coles Simply beans and didn't like them but they are still $15 and the Urban range is still $18 and no doubt will be up soon too so grab some now if that's what you normally get.

This a PSA or point for discussion?

PSA.. not much to discuss, the supermarkets will do what they want and like the last increase they all follow each other.

Probably got this week to buy Coles beans before they increase too.

Coffee is up across the board

200g House brand granulated coffees were $3 for a long time

Then suddenly they jumped up to $4.50 - a 50% increase
I checked again today and they are now $5.50

        Similar story with Chocolate

  • Thanks for the heads up.

I tried Coles Simply beans and didn't like them but they are still $15 and the Urban range is still $18

Are they much worse than the Urban range?

    • +1

I haven't tried the Urban yet, but were my least favourite of the 3 brands in that price range.
Could have just been that batch though didn't think were that old or anything, but found them more bitter than the others.

Going to grab some Urban to try while they are still $18 anyway.

      • Thanks. I got a $20 off $40 supermarket Uber Eats promo, so might grab a couple bags of Urban Medium from Coles on Uber Eats for $19.80 ($18 + 10% markup). I only tried Urban Intense from this deal.

Not sure if they are the same beans with different packaging, but they are roasted at the same place.

  • Aldi dark roast is meant to be the cheap one.

I am trialing the luxe Aldi ones next week otherwise lime blue is unbeatable value on special

Haven't tried those but saw them there the other week. Interested to know if you think they are worth the extra when you do.

If these supermarket ones keep going up, I'll end up switching back to what I used before which is Braziliano, roasted here in WA and $23/kg

    • World-wide coffee prices are increasing.

Coffee prices in Australia are influenced by global supply chain disruptions, climate change affecting coffee-growing regions, and rising labour and transport costs. Sustainability concerns, such as ethical sourcing and eco-friendly farming practices, also impact pricing as more consumers demand transparency.

The price of coffee beans has soared to its highest level since 1977 due to bad weather in Brazil and Vietnam.
Global coffee supplies have been lagging behind demand for three years now.
Roasters are preparing to pass on the price increases to coffee drinkers, who are likely to feel the pinch in six to 12 months.

Coffee being consumed was harvested earlier this year, certainly not after June 25th, which is affecting the spot price currently. That price is the lowest since December 3rd, 2024, which the above articles refer - abc article 11/12/2024. Current spot prices won't affect local coffee for some time.

          • @DashCam AKA Rolts:

Current spot prices won't affect local coffee for some time.

Depends on what contracts each roaster has in place with suppliers.

            Price trend is definitely down…

  • We had been warned that price increases on coffee bean were coming so this is not unexpected. The Aldi 1KG Lazzio meduim roast beans went up from $14.99 to $16.99 several months ago, I just did a quick search and they’re listed as $19.99 now. The Lazzio Luxe Blend 1KG bag increased from $22 to $25 not long back as well, they have increased again to $27.99 now. They’re still reasonably priced beans and a great affordable option in my opinion, especially in comparison to Woolies and Coles who have increased their standard price of some brands of 1KG bags of coffee beans much higher to around the $50 mark.

  • This is how drug dealers work.

Prices are supposed to be coming down, not up…

  • To be honest, I don't buy the supermarket shit, so not too worried about this.

Have you tried them? These ALDI beans are freshly roasted in melbourne, usually 3-5 weeks prior, depending on your store. If they sold the same beans at a coffee website for double the price, does that make them better or different?

      • I haven't, I'm assuming they are roasted for espresso which is a non-starter for me as I prefer pourovers. It would be interesting to try them on an espresso machine if I had one, I still highly doubt it would be something I'd enjoy, but I would give it a go.

For what it's worth, I've tried some of the coffee website stuff (airjo and lime?) that are popular here and don't find that compares well to what you can get from other roasters here in Melbourne.

      • +1

Definitely punching above their price point (well, especially when they were 12 bucks)

I'm fairly tolerant to most beans, I only use in an automatic machine and drink with a dash of milk but I drink many per day. I can't afford to spend much more on beans :D

What do you normally have mate?

  • It's called inflation

  • +1

per kilo that's really good compared to beans bought elsewhere still.

    • +1

Yeah, I was going to say exactly this. I thought they were talking about 250g!
I pay $70/kg at my local roaster. Happy supporting them, and more ethical coffee supply chains.

I'm a specialty coffee roaster who's been in the business for more than 15 years. Our contracts that expired this year saw a ~85% increase in green bean pricing across the board. Some of the green beans we buy now cost $20/kilo, so paying around $20/kilo for roasted is cheap coffee!

    • I'm sure jv will tell you, and us, that is simply not true.

    • Economy of scale though, I would imagine the quantity they are roasting secures them a better price.
But yes, I understand it takes time for the effect to filter through. Lets hope it goes the other way eventually since supply is supposed to be getting better.

Must be a shortage on LEDs too since my changedetection just alerted me that Bunnings put up the price of the Ozito worklight by $5… 😜

  • So, it appears Inflation is real, all over the world from primary producers, manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers.

    Who would have thought????

  • Not sure if Coles is taking the piss, testing the market, but watching their prices over the last few weeks they left it for a little while only to jack the Urban range from $18 to $24 and the Simply to $20, maybe waiting to see if others follow..

I guess they overshot their price jack and have dropped Simply back to $18, though Urban still at $24. I tried both the medium and strong, wasn't impressed by either tbh. Would rather Aldi dark so guess not a big deal for me, but they've bumped their medium up to $22 now. Hopefully dark isn't next.
