An App for Google Maps for iPad: EggMaps HD - Free for One Day!

890

The last ozbargain promotion went so well, I thought I'd do one more (but much shorter this time).

I have made a Google Maps app for iPad, to use until Google releases the official app. So you don't have to use the iPhone app at low-resolution.

It's currently #2 in the App Store (navigation category) and has received very positive reviews.

It's called EggMaps, and will be free from now until Monday 21st. I've set the price to automatically go up on Monday.

Edit: Before anyone asks, the price from Monday will be Tier 1 ($0.99). I may raise it beyond that at a later date.

Update: I've launched a design contest to redesign the icon. Winner gets US$135 (guaranteed by 99designs). See here for more info: http://99designs.com.au/icon-button-design/contests/eggmaps-… . The people have spoken and they have been heard!
Update: wrong prize amount entered in last update - sorry for confusion.

      To make some money?

Or are you asking why I'm making it free until Monday? Because:

      1. Then I can post it on OzBargain. Because it's a bargain.
      2. You'll try it and like it.
      3. You'll show it to your your wife/husband/brother/sister/hermit crab.
      4. They'll want it and they'll buy it for $1 each.

What a simple and brilliant answer!

        2. You'll try it and like it.

I see you haven't quite met jv yet.

        • I noticed that jv posted a deal for Discovr Music, which is one of my favourite apps.

My hermit crab was very impressed by it. Nice app.

Thanks for the upvote and the positive review!

My hermit crab dropped his iPhone in the water :(

Still a lots of bugs need to be fixed. Deleted after trying for 10mins.

  • Few points to consider

    -The icon looks crap
-How long did it take to code this app? Coz once google releases their app, this app will be redundant/worthless

    • +1

I respectfully disagree with both of your opinions.

However it seems that there are a few others to whom the icon does not appeal. If I make enough money from this, I will hire an icon designer to revise it subtly. Subtly because the existing one is quite distinctive (although not a work of art). An icon's primary purpose is to be distinctive; looking beautiful is an important secondary consideration.

        Icon is ugly..

        Brown oval on blue background.

Looks like something that can be done in photoshop in 2 mins.

Maybe make the egg lay on some graphics of background of a
-lush green grass with blue gradient sky

        or

lay on a road track etc..

      • It can be distinctive and stylish. The two are not mutually exclusive
I don't think the icon is 'crap', maybe a bit plain is all

        • Yep, as I mentioned, I'll get a professional to revise the icon if I can. You're right, the two are definitely not mutually exclusive, but (IMHO) distinctive is more important than stylish for an icon, so you can easily find the app you are looking for.

As mentioned in my latest update, I've listened to your feedback (and others) and as a result have launched a contest (prize: US$135) to redesign the icon:

      http://99designs.com.au/icon-button-design/contests/eggmaps-…

      Feel free to enter!

Update: wrong prize amount entered before, Sorry! It was only up for a few minutes so hopefully I didn't mislead anyone.

      • Some good entries on there already. Certainly a lot better than the current design.

Link it to local data eg. Traffic feeds, ozb posts etc. and you'll be on a winner!

I'm not planning on upgrading to ShitOS6 until Gmaps is available for it.

Nice app mate, direction suggestions load super fast too, love it!

It's interesting how 1 person can release an app significantly faster than the swarms of Google programmers. Nice app mate! Been waiting for this. Siri nearly took me off a boat ramp the other day.

Nice, and it has the street view function too. Even has the little blue location ball flashing in my house from street view.
What is the little icon in the bottom right hand corner for? It goes yellow when I press it.

  • Great, i'll give it a try!

  • +1

Happy to have full screen maps on the iPad. Thanks for this.

  • Hi

    Streetview doesn't work properly
and seems to lock up at one street.

Also how can I pan in streetview?
I can't pan around to look at other streets.

It's not bad app, considering you are one man team vs google team.

Hope you can make a bit of cash before google maps comes to the ipad.

Hi tyler, thanks for all your feedback. Believe me, it is appreciated. I'm sorry you're having trouble with streetview.

Streetview doesn't work properly and seems to lock up at one street.
Also how can I pan in streetview?
I can't pan around to look at other streets.

Is anyone else having problems with street view?

It's unlikely that I'll be able to fix it, since that part of the app is handled entirely by Google. But I will investigate it. I am able to pan and move in streetview on my iPad. To pan, just swipe (slowly) with your finger.

      • Is there a particular location where it locks up?
      • Can you point me to a location where it happens (without making public your own location)?
      • What model of iPad are you using? Which version of iOS?

It's not bad app, considering you are one man team vs google team. Hope you can make a bit of cash before google maps comes to the ipad.

Thanks mate! Of course, I'm hoping that it will do so beyond that. Time will tell.

What course or book/website did u study to do IOS programming?

Thumbs up for helping others who are interested in learning to code.

On another note, maybe once you have a big enough fan base for your app you can ask if anyone would be willing to donate their time to come up with a nicer icon (and obviously you would mention them in credits and link to their site so it's win win).

If you want to get into iOS, sign up for a developer license (which you need at some point anyway). Apple's resources are decent (lots of code samples). Signing up gets you access to the WWDC videos too. The older videos are more likely to be introductory, but some of the APIs have changed significantly. Annoyingly they don't post the code samples unless you attended, but I was told that if you need something specific you might be able to get it by contacting the relevant Apple Evangelists (a real job title at Apple).

In true OzBargain spirit, you might be able to get access to the resources by signing up for the Safari developer license, which is free. Not sure how much they lock down the individual sections, but I have a paid iOS account, but I also seem to get access to most of the Mac stuff too (which is a separate fee.

I would also strongly suggest taking a look at the Stanford CS193p (from memory) course on iTunes U. I haven't seen the latest stuff, but earlier you could get access to the student resources as well as the lecture videos.

put a face on the icon

    • +2

Then it will look too much like me!

      • it's more like an elipse than an egg.

  • I really like being able to swivel the maps around 360 degrees with 2 fingers using the Google app…why can't that be added to this app?

Besides that everything is great…especially for free!

Nice work cobberboy and find that it is actually really useful.

The one question that I do have is if I get directions, the directions pop up on the left hand side but then cannot for the life of me get it to disappear. I have to force quit the app and get it to restart for it to disppear.

    • Thanks for the positive review!

The "route" icon in the top toolbar will be yellow when the directions are displayed. If you tap the icon, the directions will be hidden. Tap it again, and they reappear.

My guide dog loves it! Thanks :)

  • This app will be redundant in the near future

    • Thank you for using the future tense, thereby implying that it is useful now.
