Generic toner is still pricey for this printer so it's not recommended if you're printing in large volumes.

    • +8

The toner is $32 on Amazon right now… that's 1c/print

      • +9

but some older brother, the toners are $12-14 on ebay cheaper if buy multiples

        • +2

yeah I bought 3x 2600 print toners for my 2270DW for $30 delivered.

(or $43 for 3x inkstation generics, which have tested well in the past)

the generic drum units are also very cheap for this model (and i see them dirt cheap on marketplace all the time)

      • +1

Can you share the link to the toner page?

      • Is this for an after market toner?

    • Last time it only cost me A$13, that was a couple years ago.

    Comes with ink,

Make sure you retain the chip in the original ink cartridge. You can take it out and put it in third party ones to trick the printer. It takes seconds to do and will save you a fortune.

    • for this particular printer, how much is the third party costs? edit. $30.50 on ebay

    • Is this the way (i.e chip) brother has gone now with their cheap laser printers. If so, it may be time for a new ozbargain favourite, maybe from Temu.

        • I didn't mean that way i.e compatible cartridges from temu. I have used these brother laser printers (x3) with cheap toner cartridges from ebay for years.

If brother is going to make it harder for us to use generic cartridges, then hopefully a Chinese brand can fill the gap.

However, it doesn't look like there is.

    • +2

Would this be why my brother printer isn't working? I replaced toners with compatible off brand ones and it just says 'no toner' (something like that, don't have it in front of me) no matter what I do.

Was thinking I need to take my printer in to a service shop to get checked, but maybe I just need to buy some official branded toners?

If that's the case, is there a video on removing the chip? I'm not even sure what I'd be looking for!

      • I had this problem with two generic toner drums I bought for HL-1110. Both said "toner low" straight away and act like they have low toner (grey printing on edges).

        • +1

I use a HL-1110 printer and I have Never bought original toners for it….

If the printer states low toner then press the button 7 times and the low toner light stops blinking :D ( has to be pressed with a certain timing, if you do it wrong nothing happens, do it again, you will know when you get it right)

    • I thought this was a laser printer?

    • How do you take out this chip and install in third party cartridge though??

    • MVP right here

The inbox toner lasting up to 1200 pages is a plus, and the option to upgrade to 3000-page XL toner makes it a great value for home or small office use. $104.87 with PayTo is a steal.

    • How long does the toner last from a time perspective? I wouldn't go through 1200 pages in 10 years, so curious if these dry or require replacement even with very low use.

      • +2

My Brother mono laser is still going strong on the original toner, bought it in 2007.

  • +1

I have this one. Was given for free from facebook marketplace with a 90% toner and 2 sealed ones.

    Great printer

Still using first 90% toner for over a year now

  • +15

These are the Toyota Camry of printers.

    • LMAO. Accurate tho.

    • Byd = Epson Ecotank.

    • +1

No, brother printers have good, reliable, predictable drivers that don't crash

  • +3

I've a similar unit. It doesn't do colour, scan, fax, staple, copy, email, NFC, A3, CDs, photos, online print, order itself new toner, require a subscription, no Wi-Fi, doesn't have a 500MB installer for Windows, has to have an "account" with the manufacturer, require a Wi-Fi Direct connection from a mobile app to set up, need driver reinstalling randomly after a couple of months. So yes, it's not an HP.

I hit Print and out comes my mono A4. Even after months of not having been used at all. It just fires up and out comes my doc. But toner's getting hard to find so I may have to get this one.

    • +2

I have an older Brother HL-1110, it's actually my second one of the same model…. but the thing just doesn't want to die (and good that it doesn't as I got that printer dirt cheap from Officeworks many moons ago, after getting my first one from Harvey Norman that lasted a few years). I also got a good deal from Safeway/Woolworths on Reflex A4 paper almost 12 years ago ($3 per 500 page ream…. when it was going for $6), ended up making a few trips. At the time I was doing a lot of printing………… I've barely used 2 of them since. But nice to have on a rainy day, can make paper planes out of it I guess!

      • +1

I have the same one! It's printing some spotty marks and stuff so probably needs a clean, but otherwise it just keeps going and going, and a single toner cartridge lasts me so many years!

      • +1

My HL-2132 is over a decade old. So tough it could survive a beating from the Office Space guys.

  • been a while since these brother deals?

    is this good lol?

i just need a printer for the rare occasion i need to print something but also I wanna minimise particles?? (printers are like bad for you or something right in an enclosed space??)

and like maybe a scan function so i can convert documents i get into pdf is that a thing?

    • +2

Phone app easier for very infrequent pdf creation

  • Does this come with toner, or printer only?

    • It will come with Toner. But not a heaps big one.

      • +6

I have had mine for 6 years. I'm still on the original toner cartridge that came in the box. Maybe 300-400 prints so far.
        This thing just works.

        • this printer was released 2 years ago, how could u have had it for 6 years

          • @zeila: probably the very similar looks but older model

  • Excellent printer. Have had it for several years, cheap to run. Hasn’t missed a beat.

    • The HL-L2445DW is a current model, released in late 2023.

      • with much harder to produce 3rd party toner….

  • +2

I have this one. Generic toners are working with it but it continues to prompt for firmware upgrade. I continue to not upgrade.

  • +2

Reminder to combine with Yello offer $15 off $100 spend https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/914136, if you're targeted

  • Spiritual successor to HL-2130?

  • Maybe it's time for me to upgrade my ancient Samsung mono laser that no longer has Mac drivers. But I'm just refilled the toner, so it will probably last me another 5 years. Wireless printing would be nice though.

    • I'm on the same boat. Got an old Fuji Xerox that I can only use with my 2012 MacBook air. No drivers for new machines that I use.

Doing my research on toners before I hit buy.

  • my L2445DW got a few black dots on printing, is it toner's issue? warranty covered?
tried to clean toner a bit, feeling more dots afterwards :(

  • +5

For those on the fence about this printer, if you have young kids it is a Godsend. I reckon I would print 12 colourings a week for my two kids which buys me about 20 mins of peaceful bliss. I’m happy, kids happy, wife happy … for 2 hours (assuming worst case that they always colour together) … each week! That is over 100 hours of family happiness for year.

My old HP was so bad it created net family unhappiness. This is a much better investment than going to dreamworld for cost per happy minute … and you can also use it for non kid stuff … winner!

  • How does this compare with Lexmark B3442DW Mono Duplex High Speed Laser Printer

    • How much? Link?

      • $140 at Centre Com

    • +1

@Megatron google how much is the toner and think again

  • +1

So plenty of people linking generic toner for this one now. Has anyone actually used them and had success. Do they need the chip moved across from the generic one as suggested above. I assume this doesn't do great moving the 1200 page chip to the 3000 page generic toner?

  • ok bought…. 3rd party $30 i guess is still cheap hopefully the chinese will get around the chip thing next year and sell generic for $15

    • Got a link to a YouTube or something on what the process is for this and which/where is the $30 toner you are looking at?

      • Just type the model number on ebay. $30ish. And yes the 30 dollars i as referring to toner not printer lol.
Replacing chip probably on youtube havent look at.

  • +1

Anyone recommend the HL-L2464DW if requiring a scanner too at $169?

  • Some girl sold this to me new for $10 on gumtree. Really good printer, fast print and connectivity via wifi and AirPrint

  • Great printer bought one 6 months ago. Recent model too, not affected by the recent security holes in Brother Printers and will be supported by software updates for a while yet.

    • one 6 months ago.

How is the original toner that came with it, still using it till now and how many pages you think it built to last?

      • +1

The included toner prints 1200 pages. As toner is a dry powder, they last a long time. I have been using the same toner cartridge on my old Brother HL-1110 for like 5 or 6 years and it's still going! I only print a few pages a few times a week though :)

  • For anyone looking to buy the generic ink at $30-40 off eBay it only lasted us 3-6 months twice in a row before the toner prints very faint at even 50% toner remaining…

Buy the genuine brother XL one for value and check it’s genuine with logo on it and forget it for long time rather than mess with all these generic toner issues and stress everyone in the household with faint printing and fixing printers year round

    • -1

How long have you found genuine lasts for?

  • -5

Does it come with the toner or do we have to pay extra for it?

    • Read. The. Description.

      • -3

        that doesnt really help mate

        • +1

Okay, to be fair the term “inbox toner” is not very clear. It means there is a toner in the box.

  • Now $128 :(

  • O Brother where art thou?

  • Struggling to connect this to my wifi

    • Was having the same problem. Disconnecting the VPN resolved the issue for me.

      • Didn't have a VPN. Did it manually on the unit like a caveman

  • received. if only this can have scanning but with the same dimension/size and price…
