Kobo Clara BW $199.96 Delivered @ digiDirect eBay

570
DIGIOFF

Been keeping an eye on these for a while – finally pulled the trigger as a gift for the wife (hoping it buys me some reading time of my own πŸ˜…).

Was tossing up between Kindle and Kobo, but went with the Clara BW for the access to local library borrowing. Free books > Amazon ecosystem, right?

Nice little unit for anyone looking to read without glare, ads, or Jeff Bezos.

$215.96 for the Kobo Clara colour if that's your thing

Same price as previous deal

panicked for a second as picture was the Roborock Q Revo Qrevo MaxV. Thought it was for $200!

  • Thanks got the Roborock for $200. Best deal ever

    • +3

Haha yeah not sure what happened to my link and it doesn't seem to change to the correct link :(
      I'll keep trying

  • if i remember it right, kindles in the us can borrow books. not sure why it's not the case in oz

    • annoyingly i bought one of these last week. Set up with the Libby app I'm borrowing books from my local library. Can't borrow magazines though.

I avoid digidirect like the plague. The physical shop is fine but you'll wait ages for your order to be fulfilled with the online store. I am not sure if it improved from last time

    • It's saying it'll be delivered in 1-2 days. Let's see how it goes 🀞

      • Hopefully they have the stock πŸ™πŸΎπŸ€žπŸΎ

    • +1

I personally haven't had any issues with them ordering online (both eBay and their own website). Deliveries have been quite prompt though I am also in Sydney, which I think is where they're based. I suppose it also depends what you're ordering - I'm pretty sure they drop ship some of the products they "sell".

    • +1

I have received a 'your order has been shipped' email just now from my order last night fwiw

  • Why Not the colour for $16 more?

    • +7

There are pros and cons of the colour vs black & white screen.

      • clarity
      • refresh speed
      • brightness
      • outdoor readability
    • +1

Apparently, since the color one has a few extra layers on the screen, one for each colour, it looks 'less' white that the B&W one, and thus the image looks darker. I read it is recommended to always have the backlight on at some level (i think it was around 10% form the top of my head) for a better reading experience, which is not the case with the B&W one. For just books, i would stick to the B&W, but if you are looking at comics, documents, magazines, etc, i would go colour, but only on a bigger screen

These don't work with Amazon Kindle library right? Would have to use libra or something manual?

    • I manually upload my books and it takes like 3 seconds

    • +2

Download the Calibre program it sorts all this out for you.

    • Kobo have their own book store. And, if it's your thing, you may be able to borrow books for free from your library straight to the device using the Libby app (library-dependent)

      • Just sign up to a library that does offer it. Pretty sure you don’t need to be a resident to be a library member

Kobo Libra Colour (White) down to $303.96 if you want the 7 inch one

    • +1

      @TerryJustTerry

Kobo Libra Colour (White)(ebay.com.au) down to $303.96

This does not appear to be the case for me. It is $379, the same as pretty much everywhere.

Is there a code to be entered?

      • +1

        DIGIOFF :) same as post

        • +2

Thank you. Because the code wasn't explicitly mentioned in the OP I missed it in the line.

Thanks. $303 is nice price for the Colour…

Anna also has a vast library

  • Is this worth an upgrade from a 7th gen paperwhite? thanks

    • +3

i have a kobo libra 2 from i think 2 years ago, and it works amazingly well! My mother gave my kid her old kindle, not sure which gen it is, but the system is crap, browsing through books is really hard compared to a kobo, the ads are disturbing, and the process to use a dictionary is not straightforward. Also, i source book from some 'open' libraries, and most of them already come formatted in epub. Since conversion to the kindle format is not 100% perfect through calibre you are better off with the kobo

I'm not sure if I'll get up or downvoted for this, but it seems that piracy protections on ebooks are very weak. I can usually find an epub or pdf version of whatever book I want to read within a quick google search. I then fire up Calibre, convert the book into the kindle format and upload it to my kindle.

Which makes the decision as to which ebook reader to choose somewhat redundant - just choose the cheapest one with a backlight (love the paperwhite backlight on my kindle).

$200 also seems a lot - I have a draw full of kindles and the prices I paid for them range from free to $50ish - people are always flogging them off on facebook marketplace.

    • +7

It's unAustralian to not pirate. I remember we were at the top of the world in pirates per capita once upon a time.

    • +3

Just adding another method which I have started using more frequently as it negates the need for a PC/Calibre

      1. Download your eBook to your phone
      2. Go to send.djazz.se on the browser of your Kobo/Kindle
      3. Go to send.djazz.se on your phone and enter the unique key that appears on your eReader
      4. Upload the eBook from your phone
      5. File can be downloaded onto your eReader

It's incredibly simple and means that you don't need to be at home to add them.

      • -2

Does this work for non jailbroken kindle? If yes, can you please pm examples of libraries?

        • You can source your own eBooks, other comments have mentioned sites for that. For Kindle, I beileve that you need .mobi file format rather than ePub but again you can convert this with other sites. Then you just open the Experimental Browser on your Kindle and go to that website.

    • How's the battery life on those used ones?

Btw why do you need Calibre? https://www.amazon.com/sendtokindle supports epub and pdf.

      • Fantastic. They last a lot longer than my attention span. And new batteries are $20-30 on aliexpress for the real iron readers out there.

Battery life is a funny justification to burn $200+ on a new one of these.

Kobos are awesome! Using Overdrive/Libby for connections straight to library borrowing make this an absolute no brainer compared to the Kindles. And then it also seemlessly works with Calibre as well.

    • I've found that some books via Overdrive/Libby don't get synced to the Kobo. Is there something that I'm missing ?

      • Do you use multiple libraries? It will only sync with the one library that you have logged into overdrive, unfortunately.

So you need to either log in and out or sideload using Adobe Digital Editions, Calibre etc.

        • -2

No; I can see the book borrowed on libby but it doesn't sync up with Overdrive on Kobo. It's only on some books but generally most books get synced

  • +2

Might be worth noting that Calibre ebook reader on windows allows you to push whatever content you have into your Kindle, including free books. Or you can email your ebook to your kindle email address and it turns up.

I managed to find a Lenovo smart paper for $200 a while ago and after it not working a couple of tries sucessfully loaded the kindle app onto that and its a win, as the larger screen is great for manga and technical pdf files, and it can access my kindle library. The trick with the kindle app on the smart paper was finding one that was built for the right ARM processor, which wasn't the standard one that I'd tried before that.

  • Telling me it's gone when i try to order, but page still says more than 10 available. Anyone else having this or did I just miss it?

    • +1

      same here

The memory in these is an internal MicroSD card. Easily removable. And there's multiple guides online on how to correctly setup a much bigger card if that's your thing.

  • +2

I personally prefer the Libra's form factor over the Clara.

    Oceanofpdf. Thank me later

    • How's PDF reading on an Kobo? Does it reflow?
