Interested in other people's thoughts on picking this up now v. waiting for AirPods Pro (3rd Generation) which is supposedly coming late this year or next.

    • +10

They are headphones. There is no change in technology that requires a new version, the only reason a gen 3 will exist is to sell more stock to people who don't realise this

      • +1

New one is rumoured to have be features such as heart rate monitoring.

        • +1

You'll get a few people who will rave about that and not accept it as anything but an improvement.

Personally it's unwanted cost and battery drain to allow it to do something I'd never want it to do.

I can't wait for Gen 4 where it listens to conversations with the mic and AI tells you through the speaker what to say. That way we can totally disconnect from each other and grow a society of fools. But don't worry, it'll be the best thing ever and $500 plus an ongoing subscription cost.

          • @justtoreply: I’d just like heart tracking without needing to forgo my G-Shock for a smart watch.

    • +2

Other people’s thoughts are not important to you. If you need it now buy it now, if not, there is always a new gen on the way.

      • +5

Except we are actually 2.8 years into the 3 year gap, and this gen has been cheaper before multiple times.

Only get these if you need an urgent replacement, otherwise you’re just buying 3 year old hardware that is about to be updated.

The jump from gen1 to gen2 was pretty significant.

        • +1

If it works fine for them and meets their needs, what's wrong with 3 year old earbuds? Airpods Max is even older and people still buy it. I'm using a Sony XM4 from 2020. No problem 🤷‍♂️

          • +1

@raperozbargain: Because this is Ozbargain, not Reddit.

The goal here is to inform the buyer as well as possible, as there is often more to the story than a mere price reduction. The comment section can often be a fantastic resource for just about any buyer, as we can't keep up with every single product line from every industry.

I personally have no issue with using old hardware. I'm still on AirPods Pro Gen 1, which I purchased used in 2022 a couple months before Gen2 came out.

The key detail is that I purchased them used for $90, then bought some new tips for $10. For $100, it was absolutely worth it.

It really boils down to the price, a.k.a value proposition. Older hardware acquired cheap can have fantastic value proposition.

As above, for the buyer that needs an urgent replacement (i.e. they've lost or damaged their pair and the hands free calling was saving them valuable time,) then that's still a positive value proposition.

But for the buyer that's in the market for this product at some point in the future? Of course they can decide for themselves, but at the very least they should be aware of the facts: This pair has been significantly cheaper in the past, and the new gen is around the corner. Once gen3 comes out, you can expect to see gen2 stock being cleared out for much cheaper than this.

Improved sound quality maybe - maybe a better chip but it is also rumored that the third-generation version of the ‌AirPods Pro‌ are expected to include health-related features such as heart rate monitoring and temperature sensing. Heart rate monitoring will allow more people to access heart data for health and fitness purposes without the need for an Apple Watch, while temperature sensing can be more accurate in the ear.

      • +1

I'm really hoping they put their ECG tech in, would make it a day 1 for me. I use a Garmin watch and don't intend to swap to Apple but am jealous of the ongoing monitoring, if I could get that via the airpods and just stick with a sports watch I'd be sorted. Temperature is cool too.

        • I just went from a Fitbit to an Apple Watch and really love the monitoring stuff (even though I only use the watch when exercising)

    • +1

slightly better battery life and same features with beats fit pro and form factor suits some folks better

    • I had the Pro 1st gen, and a few weeks ago grabbed the Pro 2nd gen knowing full well the 3rd gen are around the corner. Reason I’m super happy is that I was able to get them for the same price as this deal, and the 2nd gen are leagues ahead of the 1st gen in terms of noise cancellation, and a small step up in audio quality (I don’t listen to music that often it’s 90% audio books). The 3rd gen may have further improvements but if I can hear my audiobooks now flawlessly uninterrupted through Southern Cross station noise, I didn’t think the release price of the 3rd gen’s will be worth it for me

    • 2nd gen AirPods Pro are great. They have great mics, great sound. Only issue I have faced is battery life - I can't see that getting much better this generation. I think gen 3 are going to focus on health monitoring which I don't care for.

    • +1

Honestly, at this price, they’re a great deal. I grabbed a pair yesterday for $322 to replace my Gen 1s that died last week. For under $300, there’s not much that compares if you’re in the Apple ecosystem.

The sound quality is noticeably better than Gen 1, and the noise cancelling has definitely improved. If Gen 3 drops later this year, it’ll probably stick close to retail pricing for a while. So unless you’re happy to pay full price when it launches, I’d say this is a solid pickup now.

Comparatively I run $900 headphones which my wife didn't like the cost of but I've now spent that much on my wife's earpods just replacing ones she's lost

    • same here mate

    • In her defense if she can manage to lose Airpods with FindMy, her logic that spending 900 is excessive is probably correct just missing the step that not everyone is like her. I like Moondrop Space Travel's as a 'throw it in a bag and don't worry' option alongside something more expensive. I've never lost a pair yet (touch wood) but nice not to have to worry too much if I were to.

      • +1

FindMy (if that's what apple calls it) has been a 100% turd for the couple of people in the family that have tried using it. I wonder how it works for others? I haven't used anything like that for myself ever so I'm not sure

        • FindMy saved my butt lots of times over.
          Especially with finding my AirPods.

        • FindMy worked well for me, was very useful multiple times.

  • Any advise for the AirPods pro2 case?

    • $10 silicon one from amazon—anything more than that, you might need another case for the case for your case.

      • Thanks, was eye on this one, will the lid open easily when put that in the bag or pocket?

        https://www.amazon.com.au/ESR-HaloLock-Compatible-Generation…

        • No, the case will definitely stop the lid from opening by accident (but it might still open if you drop it). Even without a case, the lid won't open so easily inside your bag or pocket, unless you drop it. Just be mindful that the case will add a lot of extra bulk, so you will definitely feel it in your pocket compared to no case. If your main priority is just keeping the lid closed in your pocket or bag, you don't need a case for that, and it probably isn't worth the extra thickness.

        • I had the similar one for years and never had any issue with the lid. but even without the case, it is not easy to open.

        • Thanks for the feed back.

Someone advises this in other sources.

          https://www.amazon.com.au/R-fun-Full-Body-Protective-Shockpr…

My friend has this but for AirPods 3, he think it is good when new but it is fairly easy to hit the button to release the lid. He found out that recently by having pop up message from the phone with AirPods connected.

          • @samedream: Got these exact styles for my wife’s AirPod 3s and my sons AirPod pro 1st gen. They both love it, especially the clip to keep it closed. Cleaning kit is an added bonus.

  • Still waiting for them to enabled hearing aid option support in Australia

    • +6

It already has been enabled in Aus.

      • I'm currently in india and done a reset to give them to my dad. Didn't find the feature enabled. Will try again. Not sure if it checks location to enable

      • +1

Yeah been here in Australia for months now.

  • Arrrg I literally bought these yesterday for $322 sigh..

    • $38 bucks, hardly worth stressing. It is what it is.

  • Wasn't it always this price?

  • Thank you! Ive been waiting for this sale.

  • -2

Ehh, it was $221 effective with the Woolies market SB cashback a couple of weeks ago.

  • +1
