      You do realise that most car manufacturers have discounts of older vehicles? The only difference here is that Tesla are open with their prices rather than the opaque pricing of legacy manufacturers and people get all up in their feelings about the brand (including you by the sounds). An example is when I was at uni I bought a brand new car fr $10k driveaway that had originally listed at $19k+ onroads because it's build date was early the year before and they couldn't move them.

              @Brick Tamland: lol.. not a single ev fire ever in Australia yet caused by an EV under normal operation.
              Of the 10 EVs that were burn
              - 1 from Temu charger used incorrectly (charger started house fire)
              - 5 were secondary fires (eg: other cars, house ect. caused the fire, 2 were result of arson.
              - 4 after major damage (nobody injured)

              @Brick Tamland: You want the truth about EV fires, talk to the insurance industry. They would know better than anyone around risks.

              I used to live in an apartment building with a body corporate, and we were looking to install EV chargers in our underground car park. We spoke with our insurance company as some members of the body corporate committee raised that concern around fires. The insurance company did not care about EVs in the building. Our building's fire suppression system was up to code and they sent us a best practices PDF around managing fire risks but it wouldn't affect the building premium. The last safety audit flagged untidy and loose items in people's car parks as a higher fire risk.

              Simply put, the number of EV related fires is so small and the prevalence is so rare, insurance companies don't register it on their radar. At least not yet. It is going to take a major accident directly attributed to an EV before things change.

          Thats not the main reason. Anti-elon is not big in Australia.

          I think in general there are just a lot more competition this year compared to before.

          Also, people are flocking onto the 2nd hand EV market as there are still stigmas attached to the battery being degraded but in fact its not true.

          Tesla Model Y is still the best-selling EV in Australia but that number is going down.

            @meong: Agree it's not big but it certainly impacting some people decisions. I am helping a family member buy a car and despite my anti-Tesla sentiment generally expressed by me here I recommended a Model Y to them but they said they dont care how good it is I dont like Elon so I dont want one.

            The used market is a little inflated I reckon, too many people bought in at super high prices and dont want to take a bath

          • @meong: I am not so sure about your anti-Elon statement, you would be surprised at how opinions have soured thanks to Elon here in Australia. My father in law and one of my friends who both own Teslas, would never buy another one. Entirely thanks to Elon. I feel bad because I played a big part in convincing my father in law in buying his Tesla.

            I don't know of a single person amongst my work colleagues or my friendship group that has any interest in Tesla any more. And the vast majority of us work in IT and are huge nerds. We are literally the target demographic. Many of us were Tesla fans.

            I almost pulled the trigger on a Model Y myself. Now my wife says absolutely not. The Zeekr 7X is now at the top of my shortlist, and I am looking forward to it's release next week.

            Recent sales have not been as bad for the Model Y because the new model was just released. There was a lot of pent up demand waiting for it to be available. Without it, I am sure we would have seen a similar negative swing as what is happening with the Model 3.

              @FuRyZ: I didn't say that there are no anti-elon movements.

              I was merely pointing out that Tesla is losing sales mainly not because of Elon, but because competitors are saturating the market now that people start trusting the Chinese brands.

              I once went to an EV show in Melbourne and I was chatting to this couple who "looked like the typical demographics of large powerful utes" who have been going from one utes to another in the past and they were so impressed with BYD Shark.

              Not forgetting as well that Volvo which is basically a Chinese brand now and they're bringing in their whole Polestar/Zeekr lineups to Australia and was basically dominating the EV show.

                  • @colster6000: I was a long term investor, sold all my shares earlier this year. I supported what Tesla was trying to do initially, but the brand no longer aligns with my values. So I divested and moved on to other things, made an extremely healthy profit either way. I probably would re-invest if Elon were to leave, at this stage the companies image has been tarnished heavily, in my opinion it needs a breath of fresh air. It is a free world though, I am not here to tell anyone how to spend their money. I can understand the mindset of separating Tesla from Elon. Because Elon really is not what makes Tesla brilliant, its the employees that did the real hard work and their work should be applauded.

            @meong: Anti Elon is big enough. Know a couple (teachers) that had a new Y on order and were waiting on delivery. Elon does the salute, next thing they pull up in a Polestar. Y got cancelled straight up.

          They drive nice in terms of driving dynamics and NVH but the overall experience is not so great. Good cars with potential ruined by some of the worst thought out design decisions, such as doing everything, including safety critical things like gear shift and speedometer in the centre screen. Glass defogger is another thing I can think of. The way the mechanical door lock handle is hidden in the back etc.

            Nope. Still has QC issues.

            This is me coming from 2017 Subaru Outback which were miles better from QC perspective such as windscreen wiper sensor, aircons, side mirrors, and no rattling since i had it till i sold it last year.

            Its not just design. The quality is not that great. But it was the best value for a EV SUV at the time.

            • @meong: When the Model Y came out they put one in our local shopping centre. I could spot misaligned panels and uneven panel gaps from a mile away.

              I paid attention to those things in the recent test drive and didn't notice any issues like that. The exterior and interior, while barren, were put together very well. No rattles or squeaks at all.

              Obviously that's just quality that I can see, can't comment on long term reliability from a test drive. Thanks for sharing your insights. Even more reason to stay away…

              • @Bad Company: I got a HW4 Model Y in May 2024 and have not had a single problem with the car, best car I’ve ever had. I checked every panel gap etc on delivery and it was perfect. Don’t believe everything you hear on the internet!

        Combination of factors, Elon is a big one, so much competition in the market now with better features, better warranties etc. I mean 4 year warranty for a Chinese car is insane in our car market, unless you're guaranteed to flip it by then you'd have rocks in your head.

          • @Brick Tamland: I drive a second-hand 2023 BYD with 4.5 years warranty remaining, 6.5 years on the battery (BYD warranty is now bumper-to-bumper and backdated for all cars sold since 2022). Long range model, cost me less than half of one of these "discount" long range Teslas.

          Jokes aside. I actually don't have a problem with Tesla's or EVs.
          A few things deterred me from wanting one:
          1. Buttons (alack of)
          2. Expensive for what it is, and becoming more so as more Chinese EV of better quality comes to our market.
          3. Inflated pricing and leading to very big price drop when the other Chinese made cars are priced both transparently and honestly.

            ANCAP is now assessing that as part of their assessment and they will reduce ratings if a car has too much reliance on touchscreens.

              This is a Model Y post and I refer to model Y with these few points.

              I see Musk as a business man and doesn't what a business man would to in a pretty cut throat way.

              • @SetTheFaqUp: Im not arguing with your point. Just saying the issue is more widespread than you think that ANCAP is changing their criteria and also adding criteria about overly annoying DMS.

                Chances are if you buy a relatively new ICE car you will be dealing with the same thing.

                I heard from a colleague 3 years ago during covid his new BMW ICE had an issue with the touchscreen and it immediately got sent back to BMW which honoured the warranty immediately.

                However, due to covid, it took 3 weeks for the replacement unit to arrive and during that time he couldn't even turn on the aircon/heater!

                • @meong: Many manufacturers still got some basic buttons. Tesla is the odd one out, followed by VW - which already reverted back to button. A few incoming Chinese EVs are toying with buttonless. But for now, Tesla trumps it all.

I'm not responding to make Tesla look good. I don't care about Tesla as a company. I own a Tesla, and there are pros and cons about it that I have agreed with other commenters here.

                    Recent Subaru Outback releases for example have been slammed for moving their aircons to the touchscreen but their new "Subaru E-Outback" or Subaru Trailseeker EV actually moved them to physical but not released yet in Australia.

                    If you hate touchscreens, best to wait till 2026, why? Cause the new standard is for 2026 cars. Read this:

              @meong: But that becomes a moot point with a self driving car. I am on autopilot 95% of my drive, and feel 100% safe looking away from the road to tap a touchscreen button in my Model 3 when its on, and feel 100% unsafe looking away from the road to change the physical aircon dial in my ranger ute. Once FSD is released (supposedly imminent) her in Aus, physical buttons are not an advantage at all.

                @dtpearson: FSD is kinda hard to be approved in Australia especially since ANCAP keeps moving the goal posts every time Tesla delays this.

          • @SetTheFaqUp: Totally agree. I test drove the Model Y Juniper and to be fair it drove really nice and very easy to drive once you get the hang of the OPD. I concur that the lack of buttons is horrible, I really hate faffing around in screens/menus in a car. The depreciation and expensive insurance nullifies any savings on petrol if you dont do mega KM per year

            • @Brick Tamland: Kinda depends what you're trying to do. You can voice control quite a lot though it's still not second nature for me (more likely to poke the touch screen)

              Our second EV was purchased via wife's company which is great for the FBT exemption. Certainly makes it far cheaper.

              Also just to highlight how politicisation of stuff really depends on who you are and what you read, most Chinese EV makers don't exist in Taiwan cos they won't buy them (they'll go Tesla ahead of BYD).

                I was once driving in some rural areas on a windy mountain road and really needed to use the voice control just to change the aircon cause I couldn't really look away from the road in that condition and guess what? No internet 😅

                Voice control still does not replace physical buttons.

            • @Brick Tamland: I just renewed the insurance on my 2024 Model Y and the range of quotes was huge. It’s clear the insurance industry doesn’t yet have enough data on EVs to confidently price them so it really pays to shop around. I ended up going with Shannon’s for $1,187 which was like $600 less than my first year of insurance with Allianz and a full 67% less than the highest quote I got this time round!

          That's fair enough, but it's either Elons Tesla or Chinese EVs if you want a reasonably priced EV.

          The Chinese government have invested heavily into making China the number one EV car manufacturer globally for their own means. The Chinese government aren't exactly pleasant in terms of human rights (as we're finding with a lot of governments recently) so it's not exactly a great alternative for the righteous on those grounds.

          Personally, I think the west, in particular the US, FAFO. They offshored their labour, manufacturing and tech to an autocratic government for "shareholder value" and got burnt. Now freedumb isn't so important because it gets in the way of profit.

      • Personally I don't think it's related to politics. It comes down to how often they drop their retail price, which used Teslas will lose a lot more value on top of the natural depreciation to stay under discounted new Teslas.

        Impact of Tesla slashing 10-20% off their new car prices:

        • On top of the natural depreciation of a new car, Tesla owners have to drop their value even further to be priced below new Teslas
        • People who finance or lease the vehicle have lost a lot of money as the value of their car continues to drop
        • Often manufacturers slash prices of older models which typically have some level of change/update, but Tesla remain largely similar as its new software features are updated across many models.

        This puts buyers off completely or delays the decision of potential buyers.

        • This was true for a while but hasn’t been since May 2024. The price of the RWD didn’t change from then until they released the new model when they bumped up the price by $3k. Teslas boss in ANZ has said they have adopted a much more stable pricing policy now, I think they recognised the problems the frequent price changes (up and down) were causing previously

        If you have solar, the potential savings are huge. I have save half that money in just 2 years filling up free from the sun.

        While I am a big proponent of EV for its various benefits (as well as the current NL incentive if it's otherwise suitable for you), I find Tesla’s “estimated petrol saving” on their homepage a rather disingenuous way to promote EV advantages.

        If you want people to "look at the greater picture" and start thinking about the global cost of ownership after the initial purchase, you can't choose to present only the saving and ignore aspects where you are worse. E.g.

        • Insurance - you quite likely pay more compared to another EV / equivalent priced ICE.
        • Depreciation - EV still unfortunately has worse depreciation than ICE (however unfair this phenomenon is)
        • Tyres - due to high torque and higher mass, you likely wear your tyres out faster.

        If Tesla wants to present a holistic comparison of ownership costs, it’s irresponsible to cherry-pick fuel savings while omitting known additional expenses like insurance and tyre wear.
