@Qazxswec: People switched from pirating to Netflix when it was all on Netflix… Now there's so many services and 4x the price. Could easily spend $100+/mo

Prime, Netflix, Hulu, Stan, Disney+, Paramount+, Binge, HBO Max….

You either have to choose a specific set of content, pay a shit ton, or just ahoy it….

            • +1

@Dyl: Exactly. I've set a limit of 3 streaming services. If what I want isn't on one of those then I'm cosplaying as jack sparrow.

              • @SirFaffer: Music I still pay for because there's no limitations on what's available on any one service, media I gave up on (other than prime but that's more for free shipping).

            • @Dyl: Still cheaper than a Foxtel Platinum package ($140+).

          • +2

            @Qazxswec: you wouldn't steal a comment

If paying isn't owning then pirating isn't stealing

The same price for Better Call Saul: The Complete Series

  • +7

Cheaper at several second hand stores and at least you own them.

    A real bargain

    • +5

In every effing thread. Movies and TV Shows despite being delisted on Apple TV store remain in your library tab.

      • Is this really the case? Genuine question.

        • Yes. I have atleast 3-4 movies that are delisted but they remain on my library tab.

      • +3

I think the point fred is making is that when you buy this on Apple TV, you're buying a license to the content as opposed to physical media

there's nothing stopping Apple/whatever company from changing their mind in the future

what if Apple TV goes away?

    • -2

So you're saying I have to own a physical media player, and then get dressed, get in my car and take time out of my day to drive around until I find a second hand store that has stock of what I'm after, just to watch a TV show?

Nah, I think I'd rather just spend the extra few dollars and stream it instantly.

      • +1

What a shitty era in human existence.

      • +2

One day you will ask yourself "when did it all go wrong?". Come back to your comment and you will find the answer.

        • -2

One day you will ask yourself "when did it all go wrong?"

I don't need to ask myself that, I already know we aren't heading in the right direction as a species.

In the mean time, I'll happily pay a small fee for convinience (or obtain content via other means), as I don't care for physical media.

If you enjoy collecting/owning physical media, then good for you, continue to pay for it while you can.

The very fact that in this digital age you didn't think to telephone the store and ask if they have it, is very strange to me.
The implied dislike of owning something that can play media (like a PC) in this modern age, is also strange to me.

But hey, everyone is different. I can't imagine not owning a PC in this day and age; but I know a lot of GenZ only have phones (which, believe it or not, thanks to OTG, many work with External BluRay drives).

Good real world exmaple of a popular show:

If you'd ever seen the absolutely MASSIVE difference in quality between Bluray 'Stranger Things' and the streamed version, you'd be shocked.
It's the best\worst example, because of all the black, grain\particles, and smoke, sure; but it's really relevant because in a mystery\thriller where you're actively looking for clues or background movement, the compression blocking is so 'solid' that it rips you out of the show trying to figure out what 'monster' you just saw… and it was just compression artifacts.

Taking the time to enjoy a notably higher quality experience should be a rewarding dopamine hit. Effort == Reward.

"Breaking Bad is a masterclass in storytelling, with Bryan Cranston delivering a tour-de-force performance as Walter White, a chemistry teacher turned drug-lord. Cranston’s Walt is a slow-burning fuse of desperation, pride, and chilling transformation. The show’s tight writing, morally complex characters, and relentless tension make it a gripping descent into darkness. Cranston’s ability to shift from comedic everyman to menacing antihero showcases his range, grounding the series’ wild premise in raw humanity. A must-watch for its bold narrative and Cranston’s commanding presence."

its only a 9.5/10 on imdb after 2.4 million people rated it

        • +9

well you watched 0.01% of the series

          • -1

            @upnlkbgvru: Actually I watched 1.6% of it (1/62 eps)

        • Thanks for the update.

        • +4

Well it's your loss buddy. Easily one of if not the greatest TV show of all time.

"I am not in danger, I am the danger."

          🐐

          • @dins: From above: "a chemistry teacher turned drug-lord". That doesn't sound like a likeable character to me.

            • @MrZ: are you a child?

            • @MrZ: I'm open to watching it, I'm intrigued by the positive reviews and the rave storytelling; but my hesitation seems similar to yours.

I can't personally imagine a way to make a drug dealer likable, but I guess that's the appeal of good writing, it sounds like they've managed to do it, so I'm very open to being wrong.

            • @MrZ: Well the moral ambiguity is a big part of what makes the whole storyline so compelling. Stop reading just watch it. You can thank me later. I am the one who knocks. 🚪

              • @dins: I read that in one episode, Walt orders the death of 10 people?! That's horrible - it makes Tony Soprano look like a saint.

What's so good about this show?

      The acting.

      The story.

      The characters.

      The humour.

      The themes.

      The cinematography.

      The tension.

      The unpredictability.

      The cars.

      The iconic lines:

"I am not in danger, Skyler. I am the danger."

"I am the one who knocks."

      "It's Kafkaesque!"

Highest rated show of all time on IMDB, with an average score of 9.5 from 2.4 million reviewers: https://www.imdb.com/chart/toptv/

I'd answer your question but I only read the first word, so I don't understand what you're asking.

    • +1

Give it another go! I only started watching for the first time a few months back. Probably thought the same as you after only 1 or 2 episodes.. But once you get in further you realise why its rated so highly. Its brilliant.

    Isnt this on netflix lol

      Not at the moment

      Oh wait it's back

      Oh wait it's gone again

    • -2

this price is to own forever. it will eventually cycle out of netflix - it'll probably happen when you're nearly finished the series

    • +1

      It's on Stan

    • +1

What's your point? Not everyone has Netflix.

  • +1

Doesn’t seem to be in 4K for some weird reason

    • -1

Should be highlighted that it's not 4K, that's odd

      • lol this show is from 2008! There weren't even 4K TVs back then.

        • I've got the whole series in 4K, Amazon has it in 4K https://www.amazon.com/Breaking-Bad-Season-1/dp/B0012QRPU4

          • @Dyl: Maybe it's upscaled from HD?

            • @MrZ: Amazon has it in 4K, it's available in UHD

              https://www.amazon.com/Breaking-Bad-Season-1/dp/B0012QRPU4

            • @MrZ: The series was shot on 35mm film which, when scanned to digital, gives you a "native 4K". No upscaling needed. Have they actually done that (scanned from 35mm to 4K) or they just digitally upscaled the HD version, that I don't know.

              • @Alx75: Unrelated to Breaking Bad, but related to the technology;
It's why Stargate SG1 never got a good quality HD release. The first 2.5 seasons are on 16mm film :(
The studio just can't get it to look good enough to do a 'HD release' and not have blowback.

                • @MasterScythe: Standard 16mm has a native resolution roughly equivalent to 2K–3K digital resolution. It's beyond me why they couldn't get a good scan out of that. Unless it was a really bad film stock to start with or got badly damaged over the years in storage. But 16mm is more than enough for HD.

                  • @Alx75: Apparently 16mm isn't enough for dark scenes, and the first several seasons have a HUGE amount of scenes with what you would call candlelight at most.

IIRC, many pro filmmakers were discussing it on the SG1 reddit, and I don't believe it was an outright resolution issue, so much as an ISO and shutter issue; blur and grain are nuts (even on the DVD).

Modern AI helps a lot, identifying the grain and removing it, so people are doing neat things :)

                    • @MasterScythe: Yeah, nothing helps in the "💩 in" situation, as you can only get "💩 out".

              • @Alx75: Ok, I thought that might be the case. Unusual for a show from the 2010s era to be filmed on 35mm, though. Wasn't almost everything at that time filmed on HD video? Why would you choose 35mm when cheaper HD 1080p video was more than good enough for a TV show at the time?

                • @MrZ: "Breaking Bad is one of the very few shows still shot on 35mm film instead of video. Why?

When we started the name of the station was American Movie Classics. They considered themselves filmmakers. So they insisted that everything be shot on film.

I think that was a wise choice for Breaking Bad. There are certain advantages that film has for certain kind of storytelling, the cameras are autonomous, they don’t have any cables, and the cameras are robust and sturdy, when you’re shooting out in the desert."

  • Is it 4k? HDR/DV?

    • Not 4K according to above

  • +1

ATL was $0.00 via definitely legal means

  • 720p?

  • Team Skylar.

  • I love this show, there is nothing else quite like it besides Better Call Saul (which I didn't enjoy nearly as much).

Late to the party but I have been watching The Sopranos for the first time, it has scratched that itch for me, it's very similar in terms of storytelling and pace IMO. It's frequently recommended if you liked BB.

Do check out The Wire and The Shield as well they're along similar lines.

Will do once I'm done. Thanks for the suggestions.

  • Didn't the whole world pirate this 15 years ago?

    • Not in 4K. So you have to do it again for the sake of your children and your children's children.

  • I learned so much from this show for my cooking.

  • Price has already changed 😞 it’s $49.99 now!
