Different every month, cost: $0

You're on neverpaid plans.

Post Paid. 2 x Phones with 1 x Hotspot (own the device) with 215GB of Data. Hardly use much of it all the time. About $350, including the phones themselves. We don't buy the phones outright.
I know we could save money by going prepaid and buying devices outright.

Is that per month?

Yes.

Holy shit, that is a lot. I just uped mine to $28/month prepaid and $20/month towards device replacement and have more than I need with almost 2tb of data rolled over.

that is crazy expensive.
my 3 phones with data share of 460gb per month AND NBN with unlimited data 1000/100 is less then your costs…. this also includes my data share sims

You don't want to know what my Internet Cost is then……..

rural? sat nbn? i know it get very crazy price wise.

@Kiro: $90 Primary Internet (Non NBN) and then 3 x Starlink Services (about $450 a month).
But it is all for business purposes.
So ~$800 ish just on internet and phones per month.

I'm a massive prepaid SIM slut.

Me too

Me three

Me 4 !!!😃

@Schon: I'm gonna skip 6 and say "me 7th" as it is a lucky number. Happy to let 3 others say "me 6" and be totally rock and roll!

oh well……me 9!!

A lot of SIMs go through my SIM slot, and I feel no shame.

Not scared you'll catch an STI (S is for SIM)?

Was waiting for the onlysims comment by someone who uses esims.

Prepaid 365 days plan with more than enough data. 10% off supermarket once a month, so the prepaid plan is essentially free.

If you shop at any major supermarket in Aus I'm pretty sure they aren't losing money on anything.

Last I checked, Woolworths watered down the 10% off offer to exclude 365 days plans. Were they losing money? Anyone's guess.

Dropping of the 10% deal coincided with prices rises across all Telecom.

i still get it.
perhaps my grandfathered renewal will keep it?

Me too.

My friend has postpaid, but he has to prepay it each month.

Telstra Upfront?

prepaid Kogan. 12 months. I never seem to use much data because wifi at home and work covers much of my use.

Same here.
I started on the M plan as i didn't know how much mobile data i needed. The most i have used in a year is 40Gb… on S plan now.
If they didn’t charge $179.90 vs $150 from website, i would just leave it on auto renew.
Shame i am not ob a grandfathered $120/yr Amaysim plan like my folks.

I aim to recharge around black Friday (late November ish) when Kogan often offers half price plans or two for one plans. Sometimes they offer at other times. Last year they offered the deal a little earlier from memory. But I could be wrong. The only down fall is if you need global roaming for texts and phone calls it cost about $45 for 7 days roaming with no data and only 2 hrs of phone calls. For data I would add an esim from travelkon or other that is best value. Travelkon often has sales that are worth hunting for if you know you are heading OS in the nest couple of months and need a cheap data plan.

My recharge cycle is out of sync with black friday unfortunately. I could have found something to get me by for a few months and then move back onto Kogan but it's more dicking around than the benefits are worth. The S plan use to be discounted to ~$99 but I've yet to see it at this price since the price increase. I think it's been discounted to $120 once since then.
As for travel, yes, I've been buying from TravelKon for the past 2yrs. 3HK too. Used SimsDirect once and they worked well. Ironically, this hasn't been for my own use… moreso ensuring my wife and parents have suitable data plans on their international trips. I love the fact that I can just instant message them a QR code and they can get a new data esim installed. Currently waiting for BFD sales to see if there's a big discount on the 45 day unlimited Asia Explorer esim.

Amaysim still have a ~$120/Year plan, and it's still available. It's just split up so you pay $30 every 90 days, and you won't find it unless you follow the instructions in this post.
It may not have enough data for you. 4GB per 90 days = 16GB/year. But they do have data rollover, so maybe it'll work if your average usage is less than 16GB/year.
If you do run out of data, you could install a cheap second SIM or eSIM just to get more data, like the frequent Boost Mobile offers on OzBargain. Like this recent one, $4 for 25GB to use over 28 days.

Thanks for the heads up that there's a $30 for 3 months plan with Amaysim still… never noticed it (or just didn't commit it to memory).
Yeah, 4Gb of data is too little for my needs. My usage is quite lumpy. For most of the year, I use very little as I'm on wifi at work and home. But occasionally… be it the need to hotspot when commuting to deal with an urgent work request, or data needs on a domestic holiday, I will need more. And in the case of work, when I need it, I need it immediately (i.e. no time to find a data esim or activate a new data plan).
The potential $30 savings would not be worth dicking around with compared to using Kogan mobile's S plan with to make this a viable option (especially when my mobile usage is a tax deduction).

Work phone: postpaid, personal: prepaid haha

Same here!!

Slutty habits due to Ozbargain nerding. Losses not accountable!
Waiting for da $13 is it Hell or not (like 390MB) sim to decent from heaven!
Lotsa phones to do the hotspotting…
Prepaid Telstra (due to travel to remote areas). Used to be $35pm now sadly $39pm. Have never come even close to the data cap.
Buying devices on a plan used to be worth it in 2010-2012. Now I prefer buying the device outright which I'll use for 4 years before upgrading, and pay $3X pm for prepaid.
(due to travel to remote areas)
If you mostly only need Telstra so people can call you when you're remote, you could change to Telstra's PAYG plan which is $39 per 6 months, see the "Pre-Paid Mobile Casual plan" on this page: https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/com…
Use that line only for receiving calls (but you can also call out occasionally, you have 95 minutes of outgoing calls and 120 SMS/MMS included per recharge. And a miniscule 390 Megabytes of data.). If you call out on this line, ask people to call you back, to save your outgoing call minutes.
Then get a second SIM or eSIM from a cheaper provider, and use that for all your data and outgoing calls. Set the voicemail message to say "I must be out of range, try my other mobile number, it's 04……" and give the Telstra number.
So if you're remote and someone calls your second number, they know to call your Telstra number.
Only give your Telstra number to your workplace. On Android phones, you can select which SIM is used for a each contact, so you can default to the second SIM/eSIM for most outgoing calls, and specify the Telstra SIM for your workplace and workmates.
If you need to make lots of calls when remote, or you need data when remote, get a Boost plan. Those plans start at $26 per 28 days, and use the full Telstra network. As of December last year, Telstra bought Boost.

Or just move to Boost which uses the full Telstra network. Currently $244 for 1 year with 300GB and unlimited calls/sms.

I added that to my post already, you must have been typing when I edited the post!
But using two SIMs is still cheaper, e.g. Kogan Mobile's $150/year plan plus 2x Telstra $39 plan = $228, and you can probably find a cheaper plan than the Kogan Mobile plan.
I'm loving my Amaysim $60/year plan.

I had Boost speeds dropping from 300MB down to 12.
Lodged dozens of cases with ombudsman and copped heaps of abuse from Hell$tra's Phillipines based call centre.
Eventually after nearly 6 months got a whopping big $100 compensation.

I'm running dual sim both on prepaid.
My main is on Amaysim $60/yr talk and text no data.
Second Sim is for data only on Telstra/boost.
Whats the reason behind this? Curious if it's something I should be doing

It can save significant money.
Some people (like me) only need about 2GB of mobile data per year, so for me that adds $20 to the $60 plan. Can you find an annual plan that cheap?
If you use lots of data, some people "SIM slut" on the data SIM, using either introductory offers or cashback offers, giving very low-cost data.
You can also use an eSIM provider for data, like Eskimo. They offer 10GB of data for under 30AUD, with two years to use the data. But as Eskimo is Singaporean, websites will think you're in Singapore.

One number for the wife, the other for the mistress

My main is on Amaysim $60/yr talk and text no data.
Is this plan renewable at the end of the year?
Can you receive MMS with this 'plan' ?

I have that plan.
Is this plan renewable at the end of the year?
Yes. I've downloaded the CIS HERE, it says
Automatic Renewal
For convenience, this amaysim TALK AND TEXT Mobile Plan automatically renews every 12 months. Can you receive MMS with this 'plan' ?
Yes. With no other SIM in the phone, and mobile data turned off and WiFi disconnected, I can send and receive MMS messages. It seems that while MMS messages use data, it isn't counted as data by Amaysim. I don't have any data add-ons either.
The CIS also says
Standard SMS and MMS |Unlimited
Yes. With no other SIM in the phone, and mobile data turned off and WiFi disconnected, I can send and receive MMS messages.
That's great !
Thanks for confirming this.
You've really sold me this Amaysim 'plan'.

@Russ: Dual-SIM phone:
SIM1 - voice
SIM2 - dataSo, for SIM1, I just needed a plan that only had voice and text,
but every now & then, I might need to receive a MMS, so this Amaysim is a sweet-spot for that.
@whyisave: If you only want a small amount of data, I can tell you how to get long-expiry data for $3/GB using eSIMs. But websites will think you're not in Australia, which makes some not work. Cheapest long expiry data I've found with an Australian telco is $10/GB with Amaysim.
I'd be interested to hear your plan, in case you've found data at an even lower cost.

@Russ: I don't use data often, but I use Boost 5G for data and I have more than enough annually, before renewal.
My purpose was not for lowest cost for voice or data. The number that I think should go onto this Amaysim plan, is from an old company PAYG staff plan, that does not exist anymore.
So, i want to keep that number but I could not figure out the Amaysim value for it, eg. MMS?
Plus, I do not have eSIM phones.

Much better deals abound with prepaid, have been with Woolworths mobile for a few years now, $220/annum, always have banked data at end of my yearly period, get 10% off shops so $18 a week for my SIM and shopping savings of about $30-$40/month (yeah, could save by shopping elsewhere but Woolies is across the road from work).

Both, prepaid and postpaid (different phones).

$89 a month, for 2 years with telstra

Postpaid. Which is actually prepaid now with Telstra, all their plans have you pay the month ahead instead of the month behind. I know Telstra is a huge rip, but they had the fastest 5G plan and didn't shape it. Things may have changed now, but I can't be bothered changing.

Postpaid only because I've got a really good setup, otherwise I'd be on prepaid every time.
$65/m for 500GB with Optus.
6 x $5/m data only SIMS with 20GB each (used to be $0/m for all 6)5 of them are used for data for family's secondary SIMs, they all get their calls/text with Amaysim for $60/year on their primary SIMs
The remaining data SIM is in a 5G Nokia modem at my parents house for internet since they're not high end users.
So I got a proper mobile service for me, data access for my family and a broadband service all for $95/m and we never need to worry about how much data we use. Used to cost me $65/m when the data sharing SIMs were $0/m.
Been on this for 5+ years now. Promo comes around every year for anyone else who wants it.

you have with your cellphones
I think you are looking for USAbargain
People on OzBargain use mobile phones.

Glad to see I'm not the only one that was triggered. Wish all this American English creeping in didn't bother me so much.
I don't flag it IRL, but it's cringe. Someone close to me said they were going to "the DMV" the other day. Had no idea what she was talking about… It's the RMS or RTA mate, far out

Wish all this American English creeping in didn't bother me so much.
Dude….

Surprised to see so many people on Pre-Paid. I guess due to travel not wanting to muck around with sims - these days post paid available with no lock in contract anyway - why I am with post-paid. Roaming is so good to have.

Roaming is so good to have.
Roaming is available on many prepaid plans, and some are surprisingly good. Like the cheapest Amaysim Roaming option, $20 for 100 minutes of roaming calls and 100 roaming SMS, with 365 days expiry.
For data, you should either buy a second SIM/eSIM for the country you're visiting, or you can buy global PAYG credit with an eSIM provider, e.g. select "Pay-as-you-go" on this Roamless page. Note Roamless prices are in USD, and the data price varies in some countries. In most countries the data costs 2.45USD (=$3.90AUD) per gigabyte, some countries are higher, check the "pay-as-you-go" tab on individual countries. PAYG credit never expires at Roamless, and you can easily top-up your balance.

Or you pay $5 per day with Vodafone and don't have to do any of that. Your data allowance carries over to the host country. No sims. No purchases. No time wasted. Your plan is 200GB ? You get 200GB all over the world. Roamless would cost $780 for 200GB. Amaysim's highest plan gives you a measly 9GB of data on their "Epic" $70 plan.
If not going the extremely terrible value with something like Roamless - you have to look for another solution every time you go from one country to another or have a stop over and can't find (or don't want to use) public WiFi (for security or slow connx reasons)
No thanks. What a headache.
Travelling for 2 weeks ? $70 AUD with Voda. It would cost you a measly $50 more to not worry about ANY of the above and to not have to do ANYTHING else - just travel country to country and enjoy large amount of Data just about anywhere you go.

Vodafone is cheaper in some locations, and absolutely woeful in others.
You get 200GB all over the world
No you don't. Have a look at the coverage map - Vodafone $5/day coverage only exists in the red-coloured countries: https://www.vodafone.com.au/mobile/international-roaming
Of the green countries, let's pick Morocco and Egypt as examples.
Vodafone charges $1 per MegaByte in those locations - or AU$1000 per GigaByte.
Roamless charges US$2.95 and US$3.95 per GigaByte, respectively, so about AU$4.50 and AU$6 per GigaByte. That's respectively 222 times and 167 times cheaper than Vodafone. And in some countries (Sudan and Iran according to the map, plus others), Vodafone offers no coverage of any kind. Roamless does offer coverage in those countries (but not in all countries), but it's not cheap (US$16.45/Gb in Iran!). For countries where prices are expensive, there's almost always a cheaper provider on eSIMdb. For example here's an Iran plan with 15GB for AU$36, with 30-day expiry. If you run out of data, you can always buy another eSIM and keep going.
Even in the countries where Vodafone does offer $5/day roaming, it's frequently not the cheapest. Example: a holiday in SE Asia. Even taking the lazy option (not checking eSIMdb and just purchasing from Travelkon), you can get unlimited data for 15 days for AU$45, rather cheaper than your quoted AU$70 for 200GB over 14 days, and with more data.

On the Aldi family plan, $95 a month covers 4 of us. Well over 2TB rollover data in the bank.

I'm on an amaysim full year with international calls and plenty of data, I haven't paid more than $100/yr for it, I think it's a $160/yr renewal

My folks are on the $119 plan that use to be sold at Woolies. I think it's funny that it's better than the $120 version Amaysim use to sell on their website. Both plans have got unlimited calls/text and 60Gb data but the Woolies version comes with international calls for $1 less too.
I regret not jumping on this too. I use ~40Gb/yr so would have banked up data every year for emergencies. It would be cheaper than what I get from Kogan atm and I'd have access to Amaysim's roaming packs.

On Aldi - old number for receiving only, $15 for 365 days. Amaysim $30 every three months, with 145GB data in the bank I'll probably never use.
Both on free phones from the muck around with the closure of the 3G network.

Prepaid. Stops “bill shock” of doing something stupid with overseas travel.

Amaysim 18gb $15 a month. 496gb data banked. Was on grandfathered $10 2gb, but they forced the increase.

Kogan prepaid is the way - plenty of data for cheap

Postpaid that is actually prepaid. Be nice if Telco’s offered smart watch sims on their prepaid plans or to MVNO’s

Been using Boost prepaid for some years now. I wait until sales and cashback sims, call boost and ask them to transfer the old number to new sim.

Was prepaid, but switched to postpaid (Moose) on the cheapest offering so I get phone insurance w/ Citi

Main line: ALDI PAYG (hardly ever used).
2nd line: Have a $500 credit currently on Felix 2nd line which I use for data. Will last around 20months, will go back to sim slutting if no more credits for referrals
I pay effectively $5.66 a month.
If anyone has any cheaper, please discuss :)
I'm paying slightly less than that. For calls and SMS I'm on Amaysim's $60/year talk and text only plan, so $5/month.
I also have an Eskimo eSIM that I bought for Australian data. I barely use mobile data, luckily Eskimo's data has two years expiry, and you can keep extending the expiry by buying more data every two years.
The minimum data purchase at Eskimo, for Australian data, is 1GB for 4 USD (= $6.04 Australian dollars at the moment).
So if I used 1GB of mobile data per year, that would be $66.04 total for the year, or $5.50 per month. I reckon I use less than 1GB of mobile data per year.
If you exclusively use instant messaging and voice calls through Whatsapp (or similar), you could have only the Eskimo eSIM. Eskimo data gets cheaper the more you buy, so 10GB/year will set you back a little over $27 AUD per year, or about $2.25 per month.

I have unlimited calls & texts and 300gb data per month :)

how?

Plan that came with a gift card. Monthly price x 24mths - GC = 136. 136/24 = $5.66 per month.
It's great :)

prepaid, current on a 12 month More plan because of the CBA perks.

Postpaid (if that's what Telstra upfront plans are?). Handset purchased outright. Only because work reimburses for it, else would be prepaid.

retired - most usage with home wifi - low usage away from home - Boost $300ish for 240GB for 12 months = $25pm and I don't use most of the data - in one month I've used 3GB

I didn't expect so many people on prepaid. Wow. I'm on prepaid too, 1 year prepaid plan but I work from home so data isn't the issue which is nice.

Most people I know are on an annual prepaid plan. The fact that they've got unlimited calls/text, have ample data and are so affordable makes them quite suitable for many.
I feel that the $300-360/yr mark is where one would be considering postpaid as a viable option to prepaid and one would have to be a high data user or need extra features to make it worthwhile. And even then, plans on Boost at this price are still competitively priced compare to Telstra post paid if one needs to be on the Telstra network.

I didn't expect so many people on prepaid.
Well you are on a community website for sharing bargains. Members are professionals.

Prepaid Everyday Mobile by Woolies. 1 service for me and 1 for my son. $30 and $25 plans on separate accounts. Get 2 x 10% off shops per month at Woolies. Use it for 2 of my larger shops each month, I'd be shopping at Woolies anyway and it saves me close to half of the mobile bill each month in the discount.
Previously had Aldi Mobile but I've dropped to a cheaper plan with Woolies and I believe they've jacked up the $19 plan at Aldi recently too, so made the jump at the right time.

Prepaid
$120 total, Optus, 12 months, 280gb data, unlimited calls/text in Australia, and some international stuff I don't use.
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/878377
Usually a deal like this comes up around that time of the year, so I just recharge then.

Prepaid. Currently on a 12-month plan with Kogan.

Prepaid Telstra $38 for 6 months, used to be $35, used to be $30.
Been using it for years, never run out of txt or phone time as it is more to receive calls than to make them.
Wife has same plan, and now kids have same plan. 4 x the cost but cheaper than alternate plans.

86% on prepaid.
Im not one of them, def not a real ozbargainer haha

Postpaid can be cheaper for some people, it just depends on how you use your phone.

Just got postpaid with Optus for a cheap pixel 9 pro fold. Might cancel in 4 months or might keep it so I can continue using number share with my watch. 800ish to cancel, sticker price of the phone is 2800 (insane).
