MegaBuy's already not too bad… prices

LOL. Generally retailers are a bit more effusive, e.g. "get a further X discount off our already low/great/fantastic prices!". Here, Megabuy can only bring themselves to describe their current MacBook Pro prices as "not too bad". Thanks for the honesty though. :)

  • +11

    Thanks Tomato,

We know you guys will compare them anyway - so you can make up your own mind.

In fact we might make a few of them even cheaper if we can… give us 5

    • -4

Wasn't there an issue with Mac Pro's electrical systems…?

Eg, Apple got pinged for the issue(s) in Europe… but - instead of FIXing the issue(s) -

…Apple just -stopped- selling the problematic models in Europe.

Maybe these models are being "dumped" here…?

If so, what are the issues, that EU rejected…?

      • +1

        Mac Pro vs Macbook Pro

        Desktop vs Laptop

And I'm assuming (rightly hopefully) that these are with an Australian plug.

      • +1

I don't think there is anything sinister at play here, Australian stocks - these are popular models everyone sells everyday and for a limited time we can do a great price. :)

        • C'mon, I'm not pointing fingers, here.

          There'd be some short-term "over-supply"
          (too many issue-tainted boxes).

If the issue -isn't- linked to a fire-
hazard risk, then OzB-ers can be winners.

          I'll try to find the /. article…

        http://9to5mac.com/2013/01/31/apple-to-discontinue-mac-pro-i…

I wouldn't say it was a problem, just the regulations have been updated and Apple couldn't be bothered to update the system to meet them. Tim Cook last year I believe mentioned that the Mac Pro was due for a refresh this year very briefly, so chances are they are putting their effort there. The Mac Pro met the previous specifications just fine however, and I recall some of the issues they didn't want to address were fairly trivial ones like all the fans needing to have a grill over them or something relatively minor like that. In fact, I believe stores are allowed to continueing selling units they have in stock/inventory, Apple just can't supply more of them so once they leave the shelves they are gone.

Anyway, that affects the Mac Pro only, not the Macbook Pro.

  • Good prices. Can they be ordered with extra RAM - 16 GB on the $2024 model?

  • -1

does this mean a refresh of the retinas is on the horizon? might wait then, as i can get these prices through my uni (even a bit cheaper)

    • +4

These are a lot cheaper than education pricing. Where can you get them for less?

  • +3

    Made them cheaper again..

Nyama, dont have anything on the 16GB prebuilt models at the moment and cant get the same pricing on a CTO.

As far as we know, these are still all current, but you never know with Apple.

  • free shipping would sweeten the deal…

    • +5

      already free shipping Heath :)

    • -1

      coupon expired?

      • +2

Coupon is still working, shouldnt expire at all.

      • Just try to remove from cart and readd

I have the same problem in the first time, showing coupon applied successful but with 0% discount

  • +13

Don't undersell yourself. No one is offering 20% ish on MacBook. These are very good prices.

    • -5

      it's not 20%.. this is only 10%
      MD212X/A: RRP $1899 | Normal: $1740 | After discount: $1566

unless other stores all sell at RRP?

      • +4

Most stores DO sell at RRP afaik.
This is 10% off already discounted prices.

yeah JB Hifi sells the MD212X/A for the full $1894. RRP.

      • +2

I hate all the negativity - Please do your research before writing this stuff. As the person above me said - JB HIFI offer $5 discount on their apple products. YEEEEES other stores sell for RRP or very close to it. YEEEES some stores will offer 10% off a special deal Like DSE and DJ's. I know the best deal staff can get is around 13%.

If you take this overseas - its the lowest price in the world - 29% off RRP for an current.

this is much cheaper than the USA.

        • I'd say cheapest if you want to pay cash, but there's a 2.5% surcharge on CC or paypal that takes it close to what I get from staticice. though still good deal :)

  • seems good …altho not sure if cheap for the MD212X/A as some other online stores with similar prices. would also have to factor in whether they also have the credit card / paypal and insurance surcharges.
    http://www.getprice.com.au/Apple-Macbook-Pro-MD212X-A-13inch…

  • Is it GST inclusive?

    • everything we sell is GST inclusive

      • Does that mean I am also able to claim GST refund when leaving Australia for the mbp?

        • Yes, i think you need to claim within 14 days from ATO.

        • +1

Yes, but the seller must include a Tax Invoice with your order.

Take the tax invoice to Customs/TRS at the Australian airport (after Passport control, but before you leave) and they'll issue the refund. Must do within 30 days of tax invoice issued.

        • additional to this is that you must bring the goods with you as carry-on also - not check it in.

          http://www.ausbt.com.au/travel-trip-claiming-the-trs-airport…

  • +1

For those that would rather buy from Apple with the 2 week change of mind period etc. I just called them up and it seems like they are able to price match after the coupon discount (at least for the retina 13" 128gb).

    • Which apple store did you call shadowlol if I may ask?
      Thanks.

      • Call centre - 133 622

I think you'll have to wait until Monday to call according to the Apple site.

        • I wonder if we can "configure" the device after pricematch. Would love a 16gb ram instead of 8gb offered! LOL. Asking for too much?

    • +2

Our Promo can end at any time.

    • +1

I hate to go and ask Apple to price match when someone offers a lower price!

      • Yeah, unfortunately the only reason I'd go directly with Apple and have them price match is because they offer something that others don't. 2 week no questions asked refund in case of dead pixels, screen issues etc. I don't want a brand new retina display with those issues if a big reason I'm buying it is for the screen!

    • If you buy from Megabuy and find dead pixels, what do you do? Is it covered under warranty and can you go to an Apple store for a replacement?

  • So, what Software is included with a Mac Pro, by default…

More important: How much of the limited secondary storage does it take up?

    • Apple has an AppStore. If you're paying this much for a laptop, software costs are not an issue.

It runs a BSD Unix variant, so you can install many good Unix apps too.

      • That's not what he was talking about at all.

He was asking how much space the default Mountain Lion installation on the limited hard drive space.

Sorry IVI, but I am not 100% sure.

        • IIRC, it's almost 30GB for the base OS and packaged software. My 128GB MBA 13 is around 95GB usable after the OS and formatting.

        • He asked two questions. RedHab just answered the first.

Anyway go to Apples website and have a look at the OS X section. It's pretty standard OS stuff though…iTunes, Calendar, an Email Client, Web Browser and the like.

        • I still don't think that's what he was asking, but either way:

It also comes with iLife, which is great.

    • Nothing outstanding not included in a normal OS install (ie Windows / Linux), GarageBand is probably the only exception.

  • Hi Rep, think this could work for Mac Mini too? :)

    • Yeah, do a similar deal on Mac Mini and I'll buy now!

  • +2

This is ridiculously cheap, even after taking into account Apple's educational discounts and $100 free iTunes card for uni students. Unfortunately I'm hunting for the base model non-retina 13", hope you guys have those on special sometime, but great deal regardless!

  • +4

    http://www.productreview.com.au/p/megabuy/2.html

reviews on the megabuy isnt so great…. better read those reviews before you buy.

  • -3

I'm an IT manager and have spent about 8K in hardware from Itspot/Megabuy combined can you give me an even better deal?

  • +1

Bargain! would buy if I had the money :(

  • What about mac mini? Any discounts?

  • +5

It used to be that Apple store gave you pretty good incentives to buy at the start of uni semester e.g. giving free ipod touch with purchase. Now they just give you a lame itunes gift card…pfffft!

  • Similar prices at eGlobal:
    http://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/mac/apple-laptops.ht…
    Wondering what's going on.

    • it is about time for the macbook pro cycle to have a refresh… i am sooo tempted by these deals, but i am gonna wait. check out the buyers guide here http://buyersguide.macrumors.com

      • I thought the 13" retinas were fairly recent.

        • The 13s are fairly recent. :)

    • Those prices at eGlobal are for grey market imports shipped from overseas, as opposed to this deal which is Australian stock by an Apple Authorised Reseller (which Megabuy is). No difference in terms of warranty, since Apple's warranty is international, but there's a big difference if you're heading overseas in the next 30 days because the Megabuy prices include GST which can be refunded via the Tourist Refund Scheme.

If you're heading overseas, another 10% off these prices makes them unbeatable. :)

  • +1

Great deal. Pity that imacs destops are not furter reduced.

  • Great deal indeed but still deciding touch screen or not touch screen. Macbook pro or IBM helix.

  • +1

I just bought a MacBook Pro from dwi and turns out that it was caught in customs and dwi made me the importer on record. That means I have to pay duties and customs on it after I was told that they had 2 in local stock.

Anyway I'm getting FedEx to ship back to the sender so that I can get a refund. I'm hoping these guys are good with refunds, I have bought off them before but never something to this value. And have never tried returning something back.

Anyway all I'm going to say that after a month's worth of research I find these prices the best in Australia for local stock. So I just bought one - and it was cheaper than the grey import from DWI.

Please note that I'm not knocking DWI, I've purchased off them before and been very happy with the service. But for local stock this is unbeatable.

Hopefully you guys will ship out soon!!

  • Has anyone bought from MegaBuy before and has anyone used this offer?

I was very impressed by these prices and was considering getting a 15" retina, 2.6, 8gb, 512gb, but thankfully I checked Whirlpool first (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1691430). MegaBuy isn't exactly receiving rave reviews.

I went to JB Hifi to see if they would price match, but the best they could do is about 2800. Apple would only match the education price. Apple did, however, confirm that MegaBuy is an authorised reseller.

I'm thinking of going back to JB and paying the extra ~250. Any thoughts?

    • I had no problems when I called Apple last Friday. The rep I spoke to was great and he gave me a 10% discount based on the NEW prices for my macbook (he contacted me back yesterday, presumably knowing the price was going to go down). I made payment yesterday of $1484 for the macbook 13" 128gb and $60 for the incase pro sling bag. Tracking says it's at the Sydney TNT depot and will be delivered on Monday.

Try calling again until you get a better sales rep :)

bought one. transfer money. see how it goes~~~

  • Ordered and transfered money, waiting for processing …

  • +1

I have done the bank transfer on Friday night, and order status changed to processing this morning, and processed now.

I will update when I received it (to Melbourne)… hopefully not as bad as seen on those threads

    • status changed to shipped this morning and I got it this afternoon.

What a pity that apple drops the price today! Though I still paid less than the new price with 10% off, so not too bad.

But now we all know how megabuy got such a low price!

  • Here is what I do to get my MacBook Pro recently.

    1. Get Myer to offer 10% discount
    2. Buy the laptop with the discount card which I bought earlier that was offered with $10 for every $100. In fact, I found someone to sell it to me at 15% discount actually
    3. Get another 10% discount from the GST refund
    4. Myer gave $20 gift card because of the Myer One

I ended up getting around 32% discount for a macbook pro. Happy man I was. :D

  • Hi Megabuy,

Can you please provide a customized machine. I am interested to get a MacBook Pro with 256 GB Flash Drive and i7 Processor. Both Retina and non Retina models would be fine. Thanks.

    • ^ Agreed. Do you do the same models as customised machines?

  • For the posters right above me, the 15" Macbook Pro with Retina Display comes with quad core i7 and 256GB SSD.

There is also a 13" Macbook Pro with Retina Display which comes with dual core i7 and 256GB SSD.

  • Bah, I can't make up my mind between the higher end 13" or the base 15"

13" is the perfect size but for $200 you get so much more for your buck. I wish the 13" were less expensive to compensate for the lack of specs.

  • +1

Hey Megabuy - very interested in this offer as have been looking to pick up a 15" retina for some time.

Any chance you are able to offer the newly released Macbooks under the same deal?

    http://store.apple.com/au/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macboo…

    Thanks

    • Ahah, now I understand why Megabuy were able to offer this deal with updated models about to be released.

      • We didnt know about it though, neither did the distributor who offered the deal.

It was to move stock.. touch of irony!

Even Apple representatives didnt know until Monday.

Working hard to make sure everyone is covered..

        ANY issues, email [email protected]

        • So any chance of offering the newer models?

        • Will do our best, trying to find out when they land.

  • True.

  • Just got emailed the tax invoice. Does anyone else's tax invoice say there's still a "Balance Due" (equal to the coupon amount), even though I've paid in full and the item has supposedly already been shipped out? Also, I'm not sure the Tourist Refund Scheme is going to accept a tax invoice that says I still owe Megabuy money. I'll probably have to follow this up if/when I receive the computer…

    • same here. .have emailed Megabuy to amend invoice

Got MBP today, overall a happy customer: usually email replied within 24 hours. it took 3 days after payment confirmed which is not bad at all. Will see how the invoice issue is fixed though

      • It is the same here with a invoice showing balance due

      • Haven't received my 15" rMBP here in Sydney yet (paid last Friday). Supposedly shipped on Wednesday, but no tracking number provided. :(

        • Same here mate… And I just spoke with a David there at Megabuy who told me that he couldn't get in touch with the courier so he just wants me to sort it out.
I guess you get what you pay for.

          I'm also in Sydney.

        • Did David say which courier they used?

        • Most likely Fastrack Express is my guess. Was told there was a stuffup and it was re-sent on Wednesday. Load of rubbish really because I was then told it was sent out again this afternoon.

        • Geez…That's no good..courier was Toll for mine. Was sent to a business address syd . Got goods before invoice though. Tracking was given after email to Megabuy

        • Tracking was given after email to Megabuy

They haven't responded to my email request for a tracking number (similar to ricerocket), which is now making me pretty nervous that there's been some sort of a mix-up. In fact, this is probably the first online store I've bought from in years that didn't automatically provide a tracking number — a tracking number would save most of us a lot of angst, particularly when this is a relatively high-value shipment.

        • The tracking number they finally supplied was for the wrong order. I was fuming when it stated it was all delivered etc. Was promised that they would provide the new tracking number on friday….again, nothing. So I'm just waiting for Monday to come along to see what happens.

  • Same here guys… Wtf

  • FFS! These guys are completely incompetent! Called them numerous times and was told that it would come today ABSOLUTE latest. (I ordered on Sunday). Finally told that they would send it out again today and I'll receive it Monday. Asked for tracking which I have still not received.

Will not be doing business with them again.

    • Hi Rice,

Could i have your order number please?

      Id like to investigate.

  • Exactly the same situation for me.
I bought retina 15 + applecare last Friday, payment was received on Tuesday. The annoying thing is, I received the applecare but no macbook =(

    What's going on??

    • Hi Kenezi,

All orders will be filled, see our announcement at the top - apologies - its been a bit of battle because of the Apple Announcement.

before we did the promotion we asked two questions from our distributor:

Is this ongoing to promote or just for stock on hand?
      Is there lots of stock?

We got yes to both, from distribution, then this was rescinded after we did our promo, normally Apple stock is very quick to come back into stock, even for a promotion as popular as this one.

We have worked really hard and managed to make sure ALL orders are filled and will be calling those who didnt decide to go ahead to give them an option before we promote again.

We also had about 5 people sick in our office last week, including myself, which didnt help with communication . please accept my apoligies

      MegaBuy

      • I contacted Megabuy customer care this afternoon and was advised the order was shipped today and I will be receiving it tomorrow. Hopefully it does because a tracking number was never provided to me.

        • Update: took a day off work so I could sign the package when it arrives. IT never came. Called up and was told there is no tracking number since they were unable to get a hold of the delivery company. FFS! I purchased the macbook the day this offer was published on OZB and still nothing.

  • They're now saying the retina 15 is out of stock on the top of this deal. They better have fulfilled mine before it went out of stock. I was promised delivery today and this didn't happen. I was promised calls back from them after they spoke with the courier (in my case apparently Fastway) and again no calls. The last time I called "David" told me that he didn't call the courier and that was that.

If I don't get my macbook on Monday I'm getting a refund. I don't like false promises.

  • bad reviews are there for a reason….

  • Still no sign of it.

    • Just checked my mail box. Fastway left me a "sorry we missed you" card at 4PM (not long after I posted the above comment), even though I was home at the time (and was for the entire day) — the courier was too lazy to come to my front door. So it looks like the computer has made it to Sydney at least.

Looks like the blame lies with Fastway! For something shipped from Brisbane last Wednesday, their performance has been atrocious.

      • Hi Tomato,

our distributor sent some of the macbooks to our warehouse in Brisbane, when they should have been dispatched and been with you next day from Sydney..

        a "data Error in SAP"

They offered to pick them up, take them back and reship them, but that takes weeks.. so we onshipped them straight out at our extra cost.

        Sorry for the delay.

  • I just received mine. So far so good and no issues. If it's still not here after a week… I'd be chasing Megabuy for a tracking number ASAP and making sure that there is movement on it.

  • +1

Struggling to get issued with a proper Tax Invoice from Megabuy. They reissued me with another one after I emailed them, but it still indicated I owed them money (despite the order being shipped and being paid in full). Now no response to my second email. :(

I'm still pretty happy with the deal overall, but Megabuy has to be one of the most frustrating retailers I've ever dealt with…
