  • Ummm how about including the price in your posting!

  • oops sorry missed it! fixed now!

  • Hmm, shouldn't this price drop below $199 now. This is same price many months ago - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/5731.

  • this can be bought for $179 if you use the 10% discount floating around atm.

  • The Western Digital one is only $177 at Officeworks now. Not much different from this one, aside from the design, I think.

    • I think the most important factor for ppl buying Lacie products is the design :)

      • +1

Does anyone know what is so special about the design of this product?

It looks like just a black plastic box with blue light and stickers to me…

        • yeh, it doesnt looks heaps good.

        • Neil Poulton is a rather famous product designer…for those who are interested in this kind of thing…

I believe that the blue LED light will be projected to the surface of the desk….. on the other hand it has a glossy piano finished case.

I am not really trying to promote anything here. Some ppl can settle with just a bare drive with a usb->sata converter plus a external power adapter. Some ppl want to get something like WD passport which can nicely put in the bookshelf with the books. But hey it's their personal reference :)

Personally I quite like Lacie products. But yeah sometimes it's quite a rip off for requiring to pay 30-40AUD more for a 2.5 "Porsche Design" external harddrive.

  • It also is supposed to be very quiet as it has fanless cooling. For more information check the link out, http://www.lacie.com/au/products/product.htm?pid=11015.

    • I can't imagine what the "fanless cooling system" is unless there are heatpipes/heatsinks that conduct heat to the exterior of the case. In any event, this one presumably runs a bit hotter than others. (Although the Carnegie Mellon study of ~100,000 hard drives indicated "temperatures had little to no effect on failure rates — a cool hard drive survived no longer than one running hot".)

And glossy black finish = fingerprint smudges.

    • I have one and it is loud and hot. I don't have too much problem as I only turn it on occasionally, I also own and recommend WD MyBook if you going to have it always on.

      • Loud therefore = not fanless?

  • i have the same one - bought for approx $190 delivered about 3-4 months ago. no sound really comes out - is quiet.
don't really care about the look though
