royal gala are of course the best apples to eat fresh :)

don't forget to keep truss tomatoes attached to the vine so that they continue to ripen - and store them at room temperature not in the fridge :)

Jazz are better, but they have a very short season…

    • Any poms on here who remember Cox's orange pippins?

      • Yes, they were sprightly subacid, with hints of cherry and anise, becoming softer and milder with age….

      • I hoping to shake one to hear the seeds rattle someday.

    • gala is a pure bred, jazz is a cross between gala and braeburn

I was going to say that I prefer Granny Smith… But I can see how that can be misread.

    • Fuji is where its at.

  • don't forget to keep truss tomatoes attached to the vine

    or better still, eat them…

    Pretty standard prices for Aldi.

    • What's the quality like though?

      • -2

They are Red, Round and have seeds..

      • In my experience Aldi fruit/veg quality is variable

        • Exactly , what I was trying to point out the to the ultra pedantic JV, was that this is "fresh" fruit.

          Quality will depend upon.

          1. What you are comparing it to. Ie local competitors
          2. How long its been on display
          3. Time of day you visit. After all the early morning mums/pensioners etc have mauled the produce.
          4. Whats left after everyone has picked thru the initial offerings
          5. Your personal idea of quality. Flavour or looks
    • not in melb :(

Avos were $1 ea in chatswood today.

    • 50c at Towradgi

      • I paid $1.89 at Aldi in Melbourne yesterday.

ain't nothing special about these prices

Look, I'm an Aldi shopper but these are just normal prices and not worth clogging up this site with. About the same from your regular fruito and even less in produce markets, e.g. I paid $2.50/kg for bananas, and $1.50/kg for Royal Galas on Sat.

don't forget to keep truss tomatoes attached to the vine

I think you mean the stalk, the vine is back at the farm. :)

    • no, i mean vine, which connects to the stalk that attaches to the tomato :)

      • The whole vine? Never mind, we know what you mean. :)

Apropos of nothing, I've heard stories of desperate people pulling off the stalk in supermarkets and then passing them off as non-truss tomatoes at the checkout.

        • "desperate people pulling off the stalk in supermarkets" - Euphemism?

          Go wash your mind :P

This sounds like one of those woolies ads. Has a marketing hot shot defected to Aldi?

Anyhow no real deal here, pretty standard prices from what I can see.

  • Doesn't appear to be a bargain at all, my local fruit market beats these prices everyday.

    • where? quality?

  • Are Royal Galas nice? I'm used to the sweet taste of Fuji's.

    • They're better than fujis… crisp and sweet… jazz are better though… more flavour.

Pink Lady's are the best :P
Aren't these pre-packed apples? Usually the pre-packed are a lower class of apple smaller etc.

        • I prefer royal gala to pink lady. I haven't tried jazz though.

        • Aren't these pre-packed apples? Usually the pre-packed are a lower class of apple smaller etc.

          not in this deal

btw pre-packed are generally smaller but not necessarily lower class/quality

        • huh? why the neg? hope that's just a slip of the click :)

        • Plus for you

        • huh?
          Neg reason further down sorry.

    • They're my favourite, that's for sure. But only when they're fresh and crisp. But that goes for all apples I guess.

  • My favorite Apple is Granny smith. Granny Smith apples are a crisp, tart apple that make a delicious snack or a tasteful addition to recipes. Because these green apples are have a higher acid content than other apples, they take longer to go brown once you cut into them.
GrannySmith apples are full of antioxidants that improve health.
Anyway I went to buy The Granny this morning at my local fruit shop for $1.49/kg. Cheap but quality and freshness are not that good( as of most local fruit shops) that I even hard to find one good Apple there. You get what you pay for in this case.
So I went to Coles to check the price and they were selling Granny for $3.99/kg but very good quality and very fresh indeed.
Then I went to Aldi and found $2.99/kg. Quality and freshness are not as good as Coles but miles ahead of that local fruit shop.
I also found seedless watermelon for 39c/kg and mango for 99c each. So I decided to share with my Ozbargainers.

    Have a good night all

  • No bargain, regular prices, Bananas @ local Coles & Woolies $2.98 per KG.

    • but how much are gala apples, truss tomatoes, avocados at your local colesworth?

      • Don't eat Gala sorry, got tomatoes all over the backyard atm, and Avos are were 2 for $4

        • so you neg'd me because 1 out of 4 items was cheaper at another retailer?

sorry but in that case your neg is invalid, especially given that you also found avocados more expensive elsewhere :)

        • I gave your deal a negative vote because the items relevant to me were not the cheapest.

The prices you posted are also everyday prices.

To add to that it has been my experience with Avocados from Aldi that they are generally not very ripe, and whilst Coles/Woolies do not always have ripe Avos, I do find them more reliable. So in that sense I would find the non Aldi Avos to be better value.

Local fruit shop's alright on prices too with a lot of FRESH local produce, usually Apples assorted varieties around the $2 mark.

Oh and my "truss tomatoes" still on the vine in the backyard were $1 for the packet of seeds and now they're growing like weeds :P

fuji apples taste better with their crispier skin

  • Normal prices. There are the same or better prices everywhere. No bargain.

    • your neg is invalid unless you specify where better prices are :)

      • Chirnside park fruit and veg (literally 1 shop down from Aldi), always cheaper than Aldi, with equal or better quality, not to mention in stock and a LOT more choice. Truss tomatoes from memory were $1.99/kg. The other prices you mentioned seem pretty average too (average for Aldi, and above average for the fruit & veg shop).

    9c pear anywhere?

Heck all this talk about apples and more apples. Think that I will just go and eat one. Lovely snack size Pink Lady picked up at the local fruit shop for $1.50/kg. I like the small ones.
