  • a bit out-dated… but pretty gd deal for this price

  • +2

I recommend before buying you research the specs further.

Low powered single core cpu. Sucks.
    2.1kg. Heavy paper weight.
14 inch screen. Makes this okay for watching DVD's.
Intergrated graphics. Good for a movie.
HDD. Nothing like a slow hard drive to go with a slow system.
Ram. 4gb Almost sound like over kill.
Operating System. Don't forget if you want windows this only comes with linux.

In short a Tablet is better value, lighter, and quite possibly more powerful.

    • Depends on what you're trying to do though! That alternative in the tablet would be far inferior if the main use was some sort of alphanumeric data entry, say word processing.

    • Great deal for the price. System spec way higher than most tablets.

If you are a student and have no job this is perfect, as an above poster stated for word processing, spreadsheets, pdf files, Internet browsing the CPU is enough, my WD Green 5200RPM reaches 110MB/s (just tested), HDD is OK, 4GB of RAM is enough for having Word/Excel/Chrome all open, screen is a decent size and entry level AMD graphics!

Edit: Also has Bluetooth for phone sync/modem, HDMI out for use as a media center, 6-cell battery, not bad deal!

      • 110mb/s would be the burst rate from the ccache, not from the platters.

        • No way you can cache a 4GB file and it was sustained :-P

    • is there one at this price though?

  • +1

Its a over sized netbook. Nothing special.

This would run Win8 well and HDMI out + a decent integrated card makes it an entry level HTPC.

You could keep this in your entertainment cabinet all day round and it would be quiet and have a low profile. CPU looks like the biggest bottleneck so would be worthwhile doing some reviews on 1080p playback even with hardware decoding on the HD6250.

    Review here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo-reviews-owners-l….

Only issue is that as you add at least $58 for Wim8 you'll be up around $285 and stretching the budget to $349 would yield something a lot better on sale.

    • +1

agreed, a little more $ goes a long way on ozb….but this isn't an ideal world, if your budget is tight or you are sure you only need to do simple tasks this netbook is ok, good points are small size, long battery life, 4gb ram(for a netbook it's lots!), i had the version with the C50 dual core cpu, unfortunately even the 2nd core couldn't improve the laggy response
ps re review, "…with a fan cooling the GPU actively. The AMD core is cooled passively with an aluminium heatsink…" wot?! the C30 is an APU, has both cpu + gpu core on one die, either reviewer wouldn't know the difference between a silicon chip and a potato chip or he had a weird laptop version!

    • The graphics are slumming it.
In the linked thread I'm not sure what gaming he was referencing but it conflicts with other reviews of this GPU, perhaps he was playing Mine Sweeper :P

  • i believe $58 is upgrade price for Window 8 ~ brand new cheapest is $92 on staticice.
For HTPC if you gonna add OS price, must as well spend a bit more on this one Hp Dm1 4108au for $348

    http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/hp/pavilion-11-inch-noteb…

    • Good catch, I said $58 as to my surprise, a colleague walked in to HN and asked for the upgrade and was given the full version for $58. He went back again to pick up another copy, didn't mention he got the "full" version for $58 or that he had a receipt and they still gave it to him for $58. It does sound like a mistake on HN's behalf.

You can use the upgrade version to do a clean install if you modify a registry key but if you want to keep to the EULA, it is around $92 as you mention.

    • Why do you need Win8 for a HTPC?
It runs Ubuntu, therefore it runs xbmc

Its good to see a laptop without Windows on it. Those who don't like Windows have to pay for it anyway with most laptops = Windows tax.

    • +1

Give it 10 years and people will be wishing that Microsoft was still making Operating Systems,

"Windows was so easy to use, the days when software just worked out of the box and didnt break after an update" :-P

  • It's been at this price for ages.

    Bad reviews on OCAU.

The main issue is the C-30. Although, the graphics processor is alright, it is severely limited because it doesn't have the C-50 chip. Even that isn't that great but it brings it back to "usable" with regards to 1080p playback.

  • Yeah C-30 seems to be terribly slow. From PassMark

    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+C-30

Single core 1.2GHz scored 298. Wow.

As of Ubuntu it's actually great and quite easy to use. I have an old Dell Inspiron (Core2Duo T7100 circa 2007) that I've removed Vista and installed Ubuntu 12.10 on it, and neither my kids nor my in-laws have problem using it (browse the web, use Reading Egg, use LibreOffice Impress, etc).

    • Win8 flies on my old laptop with a T7200 and it's woeful 160GB 5400 RPM drive, too :)

    Recommend AVOIDING,
Picked up a Clevo Horize W246 from LogicalBlueOne and found the Power Chord causes tv reception to go out on HD TV Screens,
I've found most browsers work quite slow and freeze up, except for Safari, Opera…
Videos also tend to freeze a bit, except in Windows Media Player…
The built in 'mouse' is also fairly unresponsive…

If your only using it for Word or basic homework, it can be Okay… But even minor video editing can be slow…

If you need a laptop now and only need the real basics, it can be useful…
But saving a bit and buying a better product might be a better option…

Customer service has also been relatively unresponsive, after trying to contact them numerous times regarding the power chord issues…

    • ty for this
      very useful to know.
