Moderator Notes

We have been contacted by Acer that the cashback is available for New Zealand only hence not available in Australia. The product however was available in Myer for $341 after 10% off. Just that $79 cashback is not available to Australians.

While this model is sold out online (since last weekend), some stores may still carry stock. Caste Hill NSW had stock last week.

-4GB memory

***** UPDATE **********

Sorry for the confusion caused earlier in the thread.

Most sales staff at Myer are not aware about any Acer cash back programs.
Last week I bought a Acer S3 Ultrabook at Myer ($499, after 10% off from already discounted price of $559) and the sales person had no idea about the $79 cashback for the machine. Since then, I have successfully submitted my rebate application at Acer website.

Cashback is based on model and serial number. If the model number matches the cashback list and if no one has claimed a cashback for the given serial number and if the claim is within the dates specified by Acer, then Acer should honor that claim.

Having said that, it is still a good idea to double check cashback eligibility with Acer before any purchase.

So please double check with Acer before making any purchasing decisions.

ACER FACTORY STORE REFURBS

The same machine (but REFURB) are available for $330 at Acer Factory Store (only 4 Left, FREE SHIPPING)

Please use coupon MAFO21313
http://factoryoutlet.acer.com.au/acer/afo/index.php/aspire-v…

Applying the rebate will give you a price of $250.

Please double check rebate with Acer.

    • is this cash back for Australia??? When i tried to register for it, in T&C it says you need to New Zealand Resident. Is that so?

      • +1

        Yep. Got the same thing.

T&C's on the actual claim input screen state:

"The customer must be a resident of New Zealand."

They'll only post cheque to NZ addresses, as you can't select Aus as the country to send to. Still happy w/ the price, as there's not many sub-$400 i3 laptops, and the 15.6" is quite decent.

        • Very sorry to hear this, you may want to contact Acer or return the product back to Myer.

I did mention to double check the rebate with Acer.

        • +1

Keeping the laptop - CBF'd repacking it now that the wifey started using it.

I'm just going to find a random person in NZ Whitepages, and get Acer to send them a cheque LOL

        • me me me :)

No other way that I can find.

I have made a copy/paste list of Sydney (and near) stores. So I can start calling tomorrow.

  • Can anyone confirm the price is an additional 10% off? From ht I have seen the clearance price is inclusive of the discount?

  • How we get 10% off? :)

You guys need to check if the Part Number (NX.RYFSA.002) eligible for cashback…

I've bought an Acer Laptop previously with right Model Number, but they rejected my cashback as it's with different Part Number for claim !!!

Acer are sneaky as they need to match exactly the right Model Number and Part Number, and other company usually only with the Model Number for cashback claim.

PS. Each computer Model Number have few different Part Number with different spec

I haven't had any problems with Acer laptops(touch wood). They aren't the most glamorous, but you pay less.

      • +1

We've had them at work for years, no dramas whatsoever…something I can't say for HP!

IME, you find people with no actual direct practical experience make that comment all of the time, just coz some person their auntie's cousin's friend's mate's brother once met in a pub told them it woz twue! :p

    • +3

I am very happy with my Acer S3 Ultrabook with aluminium casing :)

My sister has an Acer laptop that she is using since 2007 without a glitch.

    • +2

I agree that Acer may not be the funkiest or sexiest looking laptop around. But my Acer Travelmate 4200 is about 6 or 7 years old. Still with the Original battery with a 15-20 mins backup time. Only Upgraded the memory until now. Its worth every single penny it was originally bought for. I'd definitely buy and recommend Acer.

  • +3

    Jakiejake, what a ridiculous post!

As a computer teacher at many schools, we have used hundreds of Acer products over the years and they have all been excellent. My own Acer Notebook computer, Acer AS5738PG, 15.6 inch touchscreen, now 4 years, old has been all over the world, used by hundreds of students and has not missed a beat. It has been put through hell and still works perfectly. This is the first notebook computer with a touchscreen that Acer made, and it is still a great notebook, and works brilliantly. A friend bought hers at the same time and it is still working brilliant too, with many advanced features for its time.

For the last 7 years Acer, a Taipei based company known for the excellence of its products and its innovation, has been ranked in the 4 top selling PC companies in the world! Starting with 2006, ranked 4th, 2007, ranked 4th, 2008 ranked 3rd, 2009 ranked 2nd, 2010 ranked 3rd, 2011 ranked 4th, 2012 ranked 4th.

The 2012 rankings for the most PCs sold in the world are: HP 16%, Lenovo 14.8%, Dell 10.7%, Acer 10.4%, Asus 6.9%. Acer sells way more PCs than Apple and is only .3% behind Dell!

Acer would not have billions of dollars in sales every year, for over 9 years now, if they sold:
    "horrible plastic crap!"

OZ Bargain is a great forum, but not a place to make ridiculous generalizations and bag some of the best companies in the world. If you don't like Acer products, then don't buy them! But in the last 7 years there's over 220 million people who've bought Acer PCs!!! Surely they can't all be wrong???

AaronPoz, thanks for posting an excellent deal!

    • +2

OZ Bargain is a great forum, but not a place to make ridiculous generalizations…

Unfortunately, experience suggests some OzBargainers believe otherwise…bear in mind though, in their defence many of these folks genuinely don't know the difference between superficial finish & actual build quality!

Next thing you'll see on this topic will be that old SquareTrade laptop warranty study chestnut dragged out as 'evidence'…never mind the flawed design & questionable methods/motivations, it was probably written in Sanskrit on papyrus, it's that old! :)

[edit] Nah, that's too generous…seriously some of the most idiotic stuff I've ever read has been on OzB. If talking out of one's arse were suddenly declared an art form they would have to devote an entire wing of the Louvre to OzBargain! :p

StewBalls, I have had much experience with Acer products, not only owning an Acer laptop in the past and having family members owning them but as a computer technician as well.

Acer laptops in my experience as cheaply made, to me they're like a Compaq to a HP.

I wonder why they sell so many? Maybe because of their generally cheaper price tag, because of the cheaper materials. I must admit that the new Aluminium Acer laptops are much better than their more budget computers and are a bit better, but for the asking price I would much rather grab something quality like an ASUS Zenbook.

Simply put, Acer laptops (not the aluminium ones so much) are flimsy feeling, cheap looking and all round horrible in the design department, what do you see when you use a computer, you see it's design and you feel it too. I am not really complaining about the components inside the machine so much when I criticise Acer. But honestly, when people say they want a cheap computer and go for something like an Acer/eMachines laptop they are better off spending a bit extra and getting something a bit more visually pleasing and sturdy.

Also, touch screens on laptops are a novelty and I would much rather have them knock a few dollars off the price of the laptop and get rid of the touch screen.

      • I have had much experience with Acer products, not only owning an Acer laptop in the past and having family members owning them but as a computer technician as well.

Liar, liar, pants on fire… :)

        • -3

And what evidence would you have to back that up?

        • -2

Well, for starters…any self-respecting tech wouldn't have made the jump from:

          multi-gesture touchpad

          to:

Also, touch screens on laptops are a novelty and I would much rather have them knock a few dollars off the price of the laptop and get rid of the touch screen.

          …rookie mistake pal! ;)

        • I didn't.
I was referring to Bruce13's comment where he said:
"This is the first notebook computer with a touchscreen that Acer made"

        • +1

Well, you did address your comment to me, did you not…bear in mind that Bruce is talking about his own personal notebook in that context, NOT this one.

I'm still calling shenanigans on your claim to being a techie though. No IT admin with even half a brain values style over substance the way you're espousing. You clearly have no relevant experience with entry level consumer grade laptops from multiple manufacturers.

        • +1

The store I work at sells Acer's in addition to other brands.
Also, if price wasn't an issue and you put a good speced laptop up against a good designed laptop, most customers would choose the good designed laptop.

I like my computers to not crack and squeak when I pick them up.

        • Price is always a consideration for an IT professional, which you claim to be. Simply buying laptops because they're pretty is IME just about using salesmanship for superficial, vain end users, not real techies! You keep rabbiting on about Asus Zenbook, which is what…about five times the price of the lappy offered here, that's what we in the know call a specious analogy!

Like I said, you also clearly haven't had any dealings with the base models of other makes. The last few entry level Toshies I've had my hands on have been no better; perhaps worse; than any Acer as far as fit/finish goes…same applies to Dell, Lenovo et al.

You're not swaying me bro, I still reckon you're full of it…you just don't communicate like an IT pro, more like a sales drone.

        • -2
        • You do know that B&H Photo is US based don't you karma???

Ok, based on the cheapest Oz stock roughly 4x at least…so the point is still valid. Upselling someone from a ~$260 laptop to a >$1k one just because it's shiny might be a salesperson's wet dream, but here in the real world most of us choose our gear on a bang for buck basis. :)

        • No, I buy laptops because they're quality and don't give the user a horrible experience.
I mentioned ASUS Zenbook once, I never said Toshiba were any better. But for what you're paying for in this laptop, you're getting.

Take a look at this for example.
          The Acer Chromebook
          http://www.google.com.au/intl/en/chrome/assets/common/images…

          And the Samsung Chromebook
          http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/gadgetlab/2012/10/Samsung_…

The Samsung features a much better build quality, is slimmer, minimalistic and so on, where as the Acer is bulky, horribly ugly etc.
If you were to buy those Chromebook's in the US you're looking at a $50 difference (the Samsung being on the more expensive model).

What's a laptop's prime purpose, portability. Why do I focus on the design of a computer? Because it's what you feel when you use it and what sort of image you put out of yourself when you're using it, do you really want be carrying a bulky laptop around all day? Keep in mind that I am not talking about Acer's aluminium laptops here.

        • Yep, still clueless…

        • That's no where near 5x, that's under 2.1x.
It is worth the extra money IMO.

        • -1

This is where me and you disagree, if you buy the cheaper model's you'll get the cheaper machine.

        • Thanks Stew, I'll make the assumption you are too.

        • Please tell us all where you can get a Zenbook in Oz for $550.20 ($262 x2.1)???

That's no assumption BTW, you're ably digging yourself deeper into a hole. Every time you post a comment you actively demonstrate that you do not have the professional chops you have claimed. Have you stopped to ask yourself why your comments above are being negged by so many people…it's not a conspiracy, you're simply wrong! :)

        • On one hand, you're saying

here in the real world most of us choose our gear on a bang for buck basis

On the other hand, you're disregarding the fact that you can get a laptop for half the price you seem to think it costs.

I didn't say you had to get a Zenbook. I didn't even imply that the Zenbook was a better laptop. I pointed out that your argument was invalid, and you seem to have taken offense to me doing so.

        • That Zenbook comment wasn't even remotely directed toward you karma…I would think with half a dozen comments between this and the one I actually addressed to you that fact would be self-evident.

Like I said, you need to compare apples with apples, Oz stock with Oz stock…ordering big ticket items from OS brings with it a whole new range of caveats. Therefore, the point was never invalidated, by you or anybody else.

      • +2

        To continue this debate:

Jakiejake, your comment "Acer's are horrible plastic crap, even at this price" is still ridiculous!

I also have a Toshiba Satellite notebook, which has also been a brilliant computer, but the build quality appears to be on a par with my Acer. As I said previously my blue Acer has been through hell and still looks great and I've never once considered it "flimsy, cheap looking, squeaky or cheaply made". And it has never let me down despite being banged around and used by hundreds of students.

I agree with Stewballs, I don't think you know what you are talking about!

"Also, touch screens on laptops are a novelty" - OMG, get with life in the new world! If you don't like touchscreens don't buy one, but if you don't know what you are talking about, keep your comments to yourself!

Touch screen notebooks have several great uses,
scrolling on website is much faster and easier
pinching photos and text to enlarge or reduce them is another great feature
using educational software that has multi-choice answers is brilliant on a touchscreen
running PowerPoints for large audiences is so much easier on a touchscreen
to drag and drop photos and text is also much easier
designing software using a graphics interface is again much easier

You obviously don't like Acer, that's you choice, but I take exception to making generalised statements bagging one of the top 4 companies in the world that has sold over 220 million pcs!

You get posters on here who say stupid things like, "Samsung make crappy TVs, I bought one in 2006 and it needed repairs!" This forum should be about focusing on the deal presented, stating the pros and cons of each deal, not about personal bias and personal issues from years gone past, not about vendettas, not about making ridiculous comments etc.

        • As I said before, they sell so many because of their low cost.

In response to your "Touch screen notebooks have several great uses" statement, here we go:
Touch screens are a novelty, you can't really get a decent laptop without one and it's just un-necessary cost.
Scrolling with a decent multi-touch trackpad is easier than with a touch screen
Learn your keyboard shortcuts, and if you have a use for one than that's great, Most general users don't, they just think they do, but they don't.
You can use arrow keys on PowerPoint, but once again, if you feel as if it is good for you, then get a touch screen, it is idiotic how they are included in just about any half decent laptop.
Dragging and dropping using Windows Explorer is hard as hell.
If you're using FreshPaint to design graphics, then yes.

I didn't have to get repairs on my Acer laptop, nor has anyone else I've known, the part I am mainly criticising is their pathetic build quality.

        • I didn't have to get repairs on my Acer laptop, nor has anyone else I've known, the part I am mainly criticising is their pathetic build quality.

Jake, any real IT pro would know the difference between build quality (which equates to reliability) and finish (which goes to ooh, shiny)…your entire argument is all over the shop; ergo, you don't have a clue.

As Bruce rightly alludes, the problem with the interwebz is that it allows people like you to make ignorant, unsubstantiated comments…normally not a problem, but since the clueless notions are delivered with such fervour, in an open forum like OzB gullible people will be swayed by them, that is a fact. You are actually doing your fellow OzBargainers a huge disservice by punching above your professional weight bro!

        • Build quality being the sturdiness of the product.

        • +1

          Reliability = sturdiness, champ.

        • -2

I'm talking about physical sturdiness, champ.

        • -2

I hope I turned at least 1 person off buying this.

        • I didn't have to get repairs on my Acer laptop, nor has anyone else I've known,

So let me get this straight, NONE of the many Acers you claim to know of throughout your "much experience" has ever required repairs, yet you don't consider them 'sturdy'? Do you even have an inkling of how stupid that sounds?

I hope I turned at least 1 person off buying this.

Wow, seriously…how old are you, 12??? Your homework is to go look up the words 'petulant' and 'troll'.

  • uh…the rebate is gone now? The list seem from Acer website seem to have changed? I couldn't find that model on the list anymore.

    http://ec3.acer.com.au/AcerCashBack/ACA/Projects/CashBack/Lo…

  • f*(&, missed out!!!

    • I bought one refurbished from acer factory outlet last night.

  • I found a store that have stock but he doesn't want to give me the extra 10% off :( Is this a 1-day promotion?

    • This is what the sales guy told me when I bought another clearance laptop, but I insisted that he check the computer system, when he did the price was further 10% off.

      • so was that 10% automatically applied at checkout? He told me he scanned it and the price is $379.

        • I got the price upon scanning … not during checkout.

          Which state ?

        • I'm in Melbourne Victoria. When did you buy it? Is this extra 10% off Super Saturday special or some kind of 1-day special?

  • +1

I got one today from Hornsby. There may be 1 or 2 left in NSW. Bonus starter pack was expired already. I hope tethering works using my iPhone 4.

  • Ramthonio, what price did you pay?

  • $379 - 10% discount = $341.10 plus Myer points
Thanks for sharing this bargain :-)

    • Great!

    • Ramthonio, I bought from Hornsby Myer too on the same day as you did. I had third last one from hornsby myer. I asked them for 10% discount, but they insisted that the discount is not valid. I called again today and how come another person (which is you Ramthonio) got a discount, whereas I didn't. She said she sold last three items and she gave to none of the customer. Can you let me know what was the code or comment on your receipt regard to 10% discount?

      • look at the next page @eeeee got the discount as well as the bonus pack, not sure which store it was

  • I'm contacting Acer soon to find out about the cashback.

    • You can initiate the claim online

  • Nice! The screen is bigger than I thought. It's comparable to my $1000 Asus many years ago :-)
I wonder if it's worth jail breaking my iPhone 4 to get tethering from phone to this laptop.

  • ok phew, thank god i managed to grab the last one in WA (called all stores, only Myer Karrinyup has one). It is however a display model, but i took it nonetheless cuz it still look pretty new and battery not used. Apparently, they are holding one new one for a customer (whom i suspect from someone from here ..gutted >.<) Anyway, the laptop was displayed as $545, but scanned as $379. I asked the staff whether i can get extra 10%, but they insisted it's already more than 30% off which is fair i guess and they looked at me funnily when i asked. so i didn't insist. Really dunno how you guys managed to get extra 10% off. =/

I could however still claim TRS ( going oversea this month, so it's all good :) )

Now let's hope the cash back works

  • Ok what the heck!? When i tried to register for cashback? the country on the form fixed at NZ? What!? Only for NZ customer then?!

  • Bad news!

  • I have asked acer to cancell my order, hope not too late.

  • The terms and conditions say cashback is only for New Zealand residents.
I guess the only way is to find one who can get the check for me in New Zealand?

    • I am not sure why the country is set NZ. Did you check with Acer?

This is why I mentioned to double check the rebate with Acer. I posted the deal based on the info from the Acer Aus Website. Not sure why the program is limited to NZ when the page is from the Aus website.

I did not have any issues with my rebate for the Acer S3 ultrabook I bought from Myer. But , that is a different machine.

      Sorry to see this happen.

  • it's alright…$379 is still pretty dam good price for laptop this spec. plus i can get 10% GSt back end of this month. I guess we can't win all all the time..

    • Ramthonio actually paid $340 (with extra 10% discount) @NSW Hornsby

Yes, 379 is a good price too. Also this model has good reviews too…

      • I'm really not sure how some of you get the extra 10%? Is it just the east thing? Cuz when that Myer Karrinyup WA guy scanned the laptop, it came up as $379 (displayed as $545), and the guy insisted it's already more 30% off, and seem annoyed i asked for more discount. So the question is does that laptop automatically scanned as $545 as the original price or $379 in Myer over east? If it's $379 then it makes sense, as Myer here did have sign "laptop 10-30% off" in the store. If you work out $545 > $379, it's already more than 30% off.

  • I managed to get the last one at Myer Hornsby on the Sunday, it scanned $379 and when I asked about the 10% off, the lady said it's part of the Saturday sale only but she gave it to me anyway so it ended up costing $341.

Anyway, I called Acer just now to clarified the cash back situation and the guy confirmed the cash back for this particular model is only for machines sold in NZ to NZ people. The cash back website is http://ec3.acer.com.au/AcerCashBack… but when you look down to the bottom of the page, the phone number is actually a NZ phone number starting with 0800. Oh well, no point arguing any further, $340 for an i3 laptop is not too bad, it would be nicer if the cash back worked but doesn't matter.

    • Don't give up so easy. They have just taken down the incorrect Australian rebate website. The conditions only appear after you buy and use the serial number. Pretty unfair. It states its for NZ residents that buy the computer in Australia. Also, the NZ phone number says STD calls may apply meaning out of NZ might ring. Anywayz, this is a matter for the ACCC if they don't honour it. It is impossible to know its not for Australians until after you buy the notebook. Even their phone message says Australian rebates are on the Australian website and NZ rebates are on the NZ website. They may have stuffed up, but many people have bought this PC based on this info. Even MSY is advertising the rebate on their notebook list.

    • I got mine from Hornsby too for $341.10 plus Myer points, without bonus starter pack (expired). Acer said cashback is only for notebook bought in New Zealand. I'm still happy with it. Now just figuring out if there's a way to get cheap/fast tethering from Optus $2/day mobile phone (iPhone 4) unlimited prepaid to this laptop.

They can say what they like as they took down the cashback website now so you can't see the terms and conditions. I had one on hold in Hornsby on Sunday until 1.30pm. Was that you who picked it up :) I ended getting one from another myer with the case, wireless mouse and 8gb usb. :) A bargain at 341, but I still want my $79 :)

        • Looks like you got the best deal ….. would have been an awesome deal if Acer honored their cashback.
