ING Orange Everyday - 5% Cashback on "Contactless" Purchases < $100 for 6 Months - New Customers

1710

Unlike the previous deal: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/81169

This promotion is giving all new Orange Everyday customers 5% cash back on every contactless purchase under $100 for 6 months from account opening.

It seems a good deal for those who missed last promotion and wanted to enjoy 5% Cashback on contactless purchase.

Terms and conditions:

The Wave & Save 5% new customer rebate ("Wave & Save 6 Month Rebate") is available for a limited time only from 1 April 2013 for six months from account opening ("Rebate Period") for new ING DIRECT Orange Everyday customers (including joint account holders) ("Eligible Customers"). The Wave & Save 5% rebate offer ("Wave & Save 30th June Rebate") was available from 1 October 2012 to 30 June 2013 ("Offer Period') to all existing Orange Everyday customers (including joint account holders) who requested to update to a Visa payWave card during the Offer Period ("Eligible Customers"). The Wave & Save 6 Month Rebate and Wave & Save 30th June Rebate (together, "Wave & Save Rebates") apply to all contactless purchases made by Eligible Customers during the Offer Period or Rebate Period (as applicable) on purchase amounts of up to and including AUD $99.99. The Wave & Save Rebates will be made into the Orange Everyday account immediately after transaction settlement. The Wave & Save Rebates are intended to be used for everyday purchases only. Should you use the Wave & Save Rebates in a manner that is not satisfactory or in line with the intent of the offer, we may place a stop or freeze on your account or remove the account from the rebate.

via online direct transfer from other accounts is the best

    • I deposit through AusPost and never have to pay a fee to do so

    • If you need to deposit cash notes and coins or a cheque then yea, your only option is Auspost through Bank@post.

There is no fee though. Your statement regarding it is incorrect:

      http://www.ingdirect.com.au/everyday/whereAreTheFees.htm

  • This is indeed the best bank offer I've even taken so far, pity it's for new customer only.

  • +10

Just buy a whole bunch of gift cards before 30 June instead if signing up again

    • Genius

    • +2

      ↑ what he said!!

    • Just be sure to spend them within a year, or the same money placed into your mortgage would earn more than the 5% saving. Extend the time by another few months for a high interest savings account (need to pay tax on the earnings).

  • Does it mean the 6 months only up to 30, june 2013? The term and condition doesnt says upto 30.6.

Or 6 months is extra ?

As a side note ,I've been with ING for over 10 years,in my experience I found it's best to have 2 accounts.
Savings Maximiser - high interest account(leave as much of your cash here as you can)
Orange Everyday - keep a small amount here ,being able to use ANY atm for free is fantastic, whilst $200 is a lot,you learn to manage what's your wallet better :)

Both accounts have no fee's and now the %5 back is great.

If you take advantage of their bonus interest offers and are disciplined enough with your savings, like I was, you can convert your savings into a home deposit and then take out a home loan with them, their rates are pretty reasonable, again no fees :)

  • I am thinking of opening an account , didn't open last time not wanting to maintain another account now I'm thinking what the hell.

few questions from those who have dealt with ING before.
    1) Are there any fees for the transaction account?
    2) How's the customer service for any disputes etc that you might have on any transactions
    3) What's the interest rate on the savings maximiser and are the transfers between the savings maximiser and transaction account instant?
    4) Any other issues faced with them?

    • 1 No fees no interest
      2 No experience myself
3 Don't have savings with them. Rates on their website.

      • Thanks, all answers on the link..

        No monthly account keeping fees.
Use any ATM in Australia for free when you withdraw $200 or more
Shop faster with contactless technology - just 'Wave and Go'
Access easy, and secure online and mobile banking
Call our 24/7 Australian based Contact Centre - we're always here to help
Link a Savings Maximiser and transfer to and from it, instantly

Rate on Savings maximiser… 5.00% p.a. Variable Welcome Rate

        • I am tossing now between joint or a single account.

Has anyone here bought additional cards on top of existing cards on a single account?

If I can get additional cards will go for a single account this time and the missus can apply after these six months expire.

I just to let you guys know that all AusPost shops got contactless terminal, thay have paywave, so you can even save 5% on your bills.

    • damn. my local post office doesnt :(. otherwise i would love the 5% cash back

    • I know three of my local AusPost shop near Burwood, Victoria which dosn't have it. Can you please share which AusPost shop you are talking about?

    • +3

Awesome tip, I have never paid bills on Post office but for 5% it might just start ,
esp the way utility costs have risen in the past 3 years.

Would post allow a 300 $ bill to be split up in three transactions ?

      • +1

        No. They will not as they can't change the amount the transaction is for when it comes to Post BillPay. I tried (-;

If your bill is over $99.95 there is NO way to get the 5% off. Bummer but a fact

        • yes there is. buy a reloadable visa travel card and pay using that

        • Don't think so. Firstly I doubt you can load onto it with a credit card, let alone use paywave; and secondly the minimum amount you can load onto your travel card is $100, which means you can't use paywave. Done on both counts!

    • That's interesting. Bills are not really purchases, so you have actually got rebate from bills?

      • Bills are not really purchases,

Well not really, they are purchases, albeit Postpaid. I don;t see why Paywave MasterCard/visa will treat this transaction differently.

        • A lot of utility companies don't allow you to pay via credit card at the post office, and given contactless is considered "credit", I don't think you can tap.

      • +1

I got rebate from my Optus bill with no hassle.

      • +1

        Yes.
Purchases are just any transaction using your card with Paywave.

I bought something for $60 and then got it refunded (I didn't want it) and received 5% cashback on the $60. So profited $3 for nothing.

        • Wow, I can see potential abuse there. Then again they can remove customers who abuse the promotion. Also if refunds are placed back on to the card (most places I go seem to only give you a refund in the form of how you paid for it. eg. cash for cash, card for card) you would think the bank could cross-reference reconciling the purchase-refunds and take back the rebate. I wonder how many refunds it would take to raise a flag of concern, or how much you could earn from the promotion before you become a customer of interest.

      • Bills paid through Post BillPay are treated like any other in-store purchase. Talking from experience here.

    • +3

      5% off parking fines too?

      • If you can pay them in person at a post office via Post BillPay and they are for $99.95 or less, then YES.

    • +2

Tips for people paying bills at the post office:

Utility bills cannot be processed as credit at the post office so you won't be able to get the Paywave discount. Pretty much every other bill can be paid by credit otherwise. Some bills I've paid and received the 5% cashback include car registration, council rates, insurance, etc.

If your bill is more than $99.99, you WILL still be able to get the saving. I had a lot of trouble at the start asking the operator to split the bill into $99 EFTPOS lots but all in one transaction. Sometimes they will tell you they can't split the bill but this is because they think that you want to pay half of your bill now and pay the rest later (no matter how much I explain I want it in one transaction) and some bills won't let the operator do this. I've given up explaining and I just tell them I want to pay $99 each on 2 separate cards. Then I end up tapping on the same card. Gets the job done.

      • Which state are you in? I have tried to pay RTA NSW but failed. Failed for QBE greenslip (third party insurance) because the bill cannot split into several transactions.

        • +2

          I'm in Victoria.

Read what I said again. That is exactly my point. They will tell you that they can't split the bill in several transactions which is true because some bills need to be paid in full. But you don't need them in separate transactions, just in multiple EFTPOS lots. If you have a $150 dollar bill, tell them you want to pay $99 on one card and $51 on another card. When $99 comes up on the terminal, tap with ING. When $51 comes up on the terminal, tap with ING. If they tell you that you can pay on multiple cards, you CAN split it up and get that Paywave discount.

        • Have you actually done that and can attest personally that it does indeed work?

If that indeed was possible, then I reckon I could have probably saved over $5000 since this promotion began instead of just the $200 I've saved on bills so far.

          Damn!

        • I remember I was able to pay my licence fee years ago using 2 bank card at RTA so I think yes they can split the bill

      • +2

Paid a bill from Origin Energy at the post office using Post BillPay and got my 5% discount.

        Be careful about making overarching statements like "Utility bills cannot be processed as credit at the post office…" because that is just asking for people like me to come and prove you wrong…(-;

        • Thanks for reporting back.

        • I was able to pay Origin bill at Auspost using PayWave today :)

        • +1

I also paid for my Origin bill today at Auspost using paywave! Awesome.

          I have a feeling there's a 0.6% surcharge (stated on the bill somewhere), but whatever, 5% > 0.6%.

        • Signed up for an account and card just arrived. I'm gonna try paying my Vodafone bill next month- it's a bit of a hassle to get to the post office to pay, but hey 5% off for 6 months ain't a bad deal :)

        • payed redenergy gas and electricity with this. Thought I was the first to discover this :P

Would have been perfect if I could get it to work with the 28degrees CC. Price protection +5% off
          Sadly it does not.

        • I have tried to pay Redenergy bill at Post Office, but the staff tried and said Redenergy do not accept CC payment. Did I missed something here? As I re-read the comment by jeppikah and discovered the word "EFTPOS". Does that mean Paywave can be used for "EFTPOS" transactions and get the 5% rebate? Isn't it "EFTPOS" treat as cash payment, and not qualify for the 5% rebate? Thanks in advance for replies.

    • For some bills I've found they don't accept paywave at Aus Post - try it anyway and if you received a "CONTACTLESS READ FAIL" or similar wording you know that the biller doesn't accept tap payments. Took me a replacement ING card to figure this one out :)

    • Been doing this since the old promotion started back in October 2012. I cancelled the direct debits on ALL my smaller bills and pay ALL of them in person at the post office now.

Saved at least $200 so far I reckon just on bills.

  • hi guys,
just want to know how to close my account? everyday and saving max. Can i do it online? hate to call as it is way quicker to do it online.

    • Call our 24/7 Australian based Contact Centre - we're always here to help

      You'll hate them less :-)

Alternatively it looks like a longer process..

      http://www.ingdirect.com.au/about_us/faq/general_faqs.htm#FA…

PS: Why are you closing ? benefit period expired?

      • thanks.

i haven't used them for a few years. want to consolidate. also heard that govt will take the money soon from account that is not active? managed to close my bankwest lately and transferred some leftover.

  • +6

Too bad they won't be extending this offer to existing account/card holders.

    But here's the plan…

    Near to expiry:

    • Top up Myki at 7-eleven
    • Buy several fuel gift cards
    • Maybe get some Coles/Woolies gift cards as well
    • Possibly OfficeWorks gift cards

Keeping each txn under $100 of course.

Probably worth it since interest rates is less than 5% currently, and doesn't look like it'll rise anytime too soon! :P

    • +5

…keep topping up your Myki with $99 of Myki money and then put in a refund of all the Myki money?

  • -1

I heard that if someone waves the device near your pocket where you keep your card in it can get all the information on your card, is it true ?

    • The operating distance of these devices is about 1-2cm. So it is possibly for this to happen, but very unlikely..

Also, it doesn't just "give out information", it confirms a purchase via various security methods. Only approved devices are able to make a transaction.

    • It's not a passive card that gives out info. It has to communicate via a protocol with the back end.

    • it's similar to displaying your credit card in public when people can see the number. as mentioned above it's rather secure. also, when you have a stack of rfid cards together in your wallet it's most likely to return a read error.

  • Do when doee current ing members rebate expire? Or this is also included for old members?

  • -2

Thanks. I just registered for a new account.

I had a look at the fees etc. It may have been included in a comment already but I haven't gone through all the comments but the first ones.

Apparently if you take cash out which is more then $200 through a transaction process (NOT ATM) but at shops, there is a 50 cents charge.

    • +3

No, they credit you 50 cents, not a 50 cents charge.

    • +1

gain $0.50 by withdrawing more than $200 in shops, make sure do not withdraw money at the same time as paying for goods, as it doesn't allow you to use paywave (have to insert card and enter pin)

      • Is there a cap for this? Why don't people open up a non-ING account transfer funds withdraw over $200 from account - profit 50 cents ad infinitum. If you did it in batches of a $1000 then that's $2.50 each set of ATM withdrawals. Or would intra-bank transfer periods take up too much time to be worthwhile? Is any bank linked to do some day transfers with ING? There is the time cost of lining up to deposit money or depositing money in an ATM and waiting for it to be recorded to consider but for a dedicated bargainer I'm sure they would line up for a few minutes to gain $3 time after time.

        • +2

I'm sure that even working at a $20/hr job you could not justify the time to gain $3.

        • You could do this if you were good friends with a post office, as you can get fee-free EFT cashout here and also deposit cash here. You could cash-out, then deposit the cash back in again (instant) and repeat. For $1,000, you'd have to do this 5 times.

So it is possible to do… if you had absolutely nothing else to do and you knew your post office would not get annoyed at you. Up to you to decide whether this is the best use of your time (opportunity cost and all that!).

  • +2

Damn I should've posted this haha

  • Does this account have any fee's? I cant see any, just wondering where they make their money. I currently have a westpac account, but would like paywave and the rebate makes the deal even better. What ATM's can you use without a fee? Or just cash out?

    • +1

As said previously there are no free ATMs unless you withdraw more than $200. Cash-out is fine.

      • +1

Actually, they charge a fee if you withdraw less than $200 at an ATM. Withdrawals of $200 or more are free.

  • So when does old members pave wave expire? Is the new 6months also apart of old members? Can we just reapply again just for the paywave? Cause most of us are with ing only for the rebate.

    • +1

Maybe you should read some of the replies!

  • here is my tip, go to master warehouse or woolies, and buy the gift card and fill with $99.99, then purchase item on that store pay with gift card, then return it, they will give you cash instead of money return to gift card, in this case you made $5 :)

    • +1

You can just buy an item and return it - ING don't take back your 5% credit either way.

      • 10 BUY $99.99 ITEM
        20 RETURN ITEM
        30 GOTO 10

        • +1

          LOL. Nice loop muncan.
You just teleported my back to 1985! C64-style!

  • This will be useful for petrol, thanks OP! Combine this with my 4c (currently 8c) staff discount too.

  • What bills have you paid and got 5% at Auspost? Most bills don't accept 'credit' transactions for pay at post? I say most don't because I only know Telstra, Sydney water and origin energy NSW..,.

    • As I mentioned above, I've paid car insurance, council rates, car registration, university SSAF fee and others at the post office and gotten the 5% back from using Paywave. Generally, you won't be able to pay credit for utilities such as phone, water, gas, electricity, etc.

      • I read your post above too. How can you tell which things can and can't be paid via credit though? Doesn't that also mean you can't pay for the utilities such as phone/water/gas/electricity via a credit card? Cause you were saying that they generally don't accept credit payments and paywave is counted as a credit payment.

        • +1

Sorry, I meant you won't be able to pay credit at the post office for utility bills. You can pay using a credit card through BPAY or through the phone of course. The post office person told me that utility companies are charged a fee by the post office when people make credit payments at the post office. Therefore, the utility companies disable that option completely so that it forces you to use other methods to pay credit without incurring a surcharge for them.

There isn't any foolproof way to tell if you can pay a bill at the post office by credit or not. Some bills specifically say that you can pay by credit at the post office in the "How to Pay" section. Others don't. I would give every bill a shot that isn't a utility.

        • brisbane council rates doesnt work at post office

  • good. done.

  • Just signed up and im pretty sure i ticked the open a savings maximiser as well. Did anyone else do this also? Did you guys get your account number for that account too? Because when i went through all the verification, it only gave me the everyday account. Not sure if it just takes a while for the other account to come through..

    • Might take a while. Relax.

      • I did the same when I opened months back.. It just took a while ;)

  • -1

Any ideas on how we can 'game' the system to get BOTH promotions meaning the older promotion for existing customers and this one offered for new customers only?
My aim is to get the 5% extended till the end of 2013. This will be winning in my book.

Looking forward to hearing from fellow OB professionals.

    • Get a card for your wife

    • Have you tried calling ING and asking if they can extend the offer for you? Worth a try using the "loyal customer" angle that people use with the telcos.

      • Tried that. No Go.
Promotion for me will end on June 30. ING won't negotiate

      • +2

Besides, I am very far from being a loyal customer. I have no loyalty to anything or anyone. All I care about is saving $$$, nothing else.

        Actually, I think I am probably the ultimate 'customer slut' ..hahaha (-;

  • Any chance anyone know if there's a due date to sign up for this offer?
Hoping to get someone else to open a new account come 30 June 2013 so 5% discount lasts another 6 months :)

    • I suspect this offer will be open until deemed unprofitable by the powers that be.

  • Has anyone successfully closed & reopened their account to extend the current 5% cashback offer past 30 June?

I'm an existing customer with a Savings Maximiser and an Everyday account since November 2012 (specifically joined to get those offers). The Savings Maximiser welcome rate ran out a while ago and the 5% cashback will end soon.

I would like to get the savings welcome rate again for 4 months and extend the 5% cashback.

If closing & reopening is not going to get me either I'd rather not bother with the paperwork, so any input would be welcome.

If I close down the savings account, what about the interest payment I would have received at the end of month? Would the account have to remain open til then? Better to close down the day I receive my next monthly interest payment?

  • I'm an existing ing customer, with my 5% off ending soon. Woolies have prepaid single load cards for $3.95 fee, $1000 maximum load, which I will be buying a few of, then splitting my payments into multiple transactions

    • edit: so anyway, i went to woolies and purchased a single load card for $3.95. The checkout chick tried to split my $990 load into 10 transactions, but it wouldn't let her split payments like it usually does when you check out.

2 other options i know of: auspost's load and go, and the woolies reloadable card. Auspost comes in a little cheaper so i'm going to try that today. the only thing that concerns me with auspost is teh wording "top up via cash or eftpos". this may exclude paypass. will update thread with outcome

      • auspost had no cards in stock, will try again later

        edit: no good, doesn't work :( d'oh

        • Where can you get these woolies reloadable cards and can you use them at caltex, dick smith etc?

  • This might be a silly question- but according to the T&C the 5% rebate should be credited back into the account immediately upon settlement, am I right? Just made a few purchases today with the card but the 5% rebate didn't appear in my account :(

    • I think they are still authorisations at the moment. You will need to wait for a day or two until they appear as transactions. That is when you will see the rebate.

      • +1

Thanks vipulrm, the rebates started coming in :)

It's good and dangerous at the same time having the 5% discount- I find myself tempted to purchase things that I don't necessarily need but because there's an additional 5% discount I end up buying it anyway!!

Also can anyone confirm if phone bills can be paid at AusPost with this deal? There's a 1.1% surcharge for Vodafone but I still net out with 3.9% discount so it's worth paying via ING.

  • Hi, I currently have an ING Savings Maximiser account.I have never held an ING Orange Everyday - 5% Cashback account. Am I eligible for the offer?
