LG Optimus G (4G) $388 Delivered - JB Hi-Fi (Out of Stock Online | Available in Store)

610

Hey all, I'm pretty sure I saw this deal posted last night…. however when everyone got to the final stage it showed up as $624, so the original poster deleted the deal. moved to the forums This deal is NOW active, and I called up 2 different JB HiFi's to confirm.

FYI:

This is Australian Stock
It is unlocked
Comes with Telstra Branding

I would like to give credit to the original poster… however I cannot remember their name! If you would please identify yourself, that'd be great.

It's an awesome phone everyone, especially at this price!

EDIT: THANK YOU mr_vino89 for posting the deal last night! The first comment has identified you!

This was the deal posted last night: www.ozbargain.com.au/node/101716

EDIT #2: I've read heaps of the comments! Just my own opinion, even at $388 + $60 = $448, it's still quite a bargain. Kogan is selling it for $438 Delivered, however as we all know, it would be a grey import with only 1 year warranty.

In terms of the Telstra no lock-in contracts, you can of course leave them after a month, so you won't be paying that $60 every month :)

I think it's best to compare this phone to the Nexus 4, as it is essentially an upgraded version of the Nexus 4. Nexus 4 delivered from Google costs ~$419. This is $448 with the no lock-in plan, however the Optimus G is a much better device than the Nexus 4.

    • Thank you!

I will put mr_vino89 in the title!

Also… if this is considered a dupe, how does one delete their post?

    • He said called 2 stores and confirmed the price now.

I added to cart and checkout still said $388.

      • I was just pointing out the earlier thread on this phone which was asked by the OP

        • Sorry by "this", I meant MY post haha… if the post you are on right now is considered a dupe, how do I delete it?

        • Yeap I got it. I was replying superforever :) I'm not sure about the dupey thing. Mod will delete it if it is considered to be a dupe

        • Oh okay! Sweet thanks :)

  • one thing i dont get is the 16gb phones get 12gb usable

bump that up to 32gb and suddenly you only get 25gb, which is this case.

    anyways great deal

    • Depends how much space the phone reserves for the system and also formatting.
ie my 16Gb USB drive has only 14Gb space.
I'm extrapolating here, but it's potential that 32Gb once formatted only has 28Gb of space, then take off 3Gb for the system and you're only left with 25Gb.

    • Better than the Galaxy S4 8GB usable space. :) http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/samsung-defends-16gb-s4s-mer…

  • Is this the same phone as the one kogan is selling for $439? http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/101783

    • Hey mahdi, I called up JB again to check what the model number was for the one they are selling… unfortunately none of the sales consultants could not give ma definitive answer. I would assume it's the same phone, however on Kogan you'll see they sell 2 models. The 75, and 73. The 75 is the better version I believe, because it supports more LTE bands.

      • Thanks BOSS ;)

      • It'll be E975, the Telstra version…

OP called 2 stores and confirmed the price!!

    • Some people only read the title before commenting I guess…

Tempted to get this but scared of LG's crappy track record in delivering updates

    • Custom ROMs are far better than anything that any manufacturer has ever (and will ever) released anyway!

      • I agree, but doesn't go for all customs roms, many phones don't have an official build and have broken components

        • Not Optimus.
The working/Not Working lists display nothing in the not working column… which makes sense given it's pretty much a Nexus 4.

    • Given that this is essentially the Nexus 4 (or the Nexus 4 is essentially the Optimus G) I would suspect there are quite a few roms available????

Too bad the G Pro (the successor of this one)is not sold in Australia

  • +1

What is the difference between Pro and no Pro?

    • G Pro is a bigger device, and many say it's a copy Samsung Note II. If you look at the G Pro and Note II, they look EXTREMELY similar.

The Optimus G competes with "smaller" smartphones, and by smaller I mean the likes of the GS3/GS4 etc

      Hope that helps! :)

    • doesn't the pro have the much newer snapdragon 600 chipset?

      • It is a bugfixed version of the S4pro in this one. Ok, the clocks will be a little higher (200mhz), but I really doubt the differences will be noticeable. However, if the software is written more efficiently, you will likely feel the difference.

  • This would be a bargain if Lg didn't simply abandon support for their phones 12 months down the track .

  • Is this 4G LTE? Can someone please confirm? Telstra are selling the LTE version but this one doesn't say!

    • Yes it is, sorry I should've put it in the title.
      Fixed.

    • This is the exact same one that Telstra sells.

  • +1

Noob question, does the 4G works only on Telstra network?

    • +1

      No.
as in, it will work on both Telstra and Optus (and Vodafone when they start)
All Australian Networks have their 4G on the 1800MHz band so far.

  • +1

Had a play with this at JB and in my opinion the screen was far superior to both the Xperia Z and the Galaxy S3. LG software on the other hand… yuck. I'd be chucking Cyanogen on it quick smart.

  • wow, great price for a quad core brand name phone. thanks op.

  • compare to Samsung Galaxy s3 4G, which one is better?

    • Hardware wise - Optimus G is better. (Faster CPU and GPU, 2Gb RAMVs 1Gb RAM)
Official Software wise - Samsung is better (Jelly Bean Vs Ice Cream Sandwich)
Unofficial Software wise - Optimus G is much better (ROMS can be made using Nexus 4 as a base, wheras Samsung wont release code for their Exynos CPU)

      • Galaxy S3 4G i9305 comes with 2GB ram

      • +1

LG G comes with Jelly bean and not ICS.

        From JB hifi website:
"LG Optimus G 4G with 1.5GHz Quad Core Processor, 4.7" HD Touchscreen, 13MP Camera With 1080p HD Video, Up to 32Gb Internal Memory and 2GB RAM, Jelly Bean 4.1"

        • +2

Happy to stand corrected on the above points.
The balance swings further towards Optimus G!

        • so, not much different. only the camera different. but i believe Samsung's camera has better color.

it only the matter if you want to use unofficial software wise.

        • +1

Faster CPU and GPU on the Optimus by a long way
          Camera definitely loses out somewhat.

  • G pro has a 1080p screen

  • This or galaxy S3?

    • +3

      this!

  • Damn thats a super bargain great find

  • Great price on a great phone. OZ stock to boot!!

For those still weighing up their options, this is essentially the same phone as Nexus 4, but is better calibrated for superior performance. Granted LG hasn't been too good with updates, but this shouldn't be a problem after rooting and roms.

  • I'm so torn between buying this right now, or continuing to wait for my galaxy s1 to die before I get a new phone :(.

Anyway this looks like a great deal.

    • I'd just buy this…
I'm amazed how you can still use that piece of sh@# lol ( just saying this cuz s2 is still great to use… s1.. oh god)

      • On behalf of my SGS1 I take offence to that comment! :-)

Mine is running the latest OS, and is still fully functional after 3 years! (I've never previously had a phone last longer than 20 months before some cruicial component broke)

    • +1

I'm in exactly the same boat, with an SGS1.
But I've been hoping the Optimus G might "flop" and it appears my wishes have been granted.
I see the Optimus G having a similar lifespan to the SGS1.
Brilliant, high end hardware, with a Nexus "brother" that should keep (unofficial) ROM updates flowing well into the future.
Opportunities like this don't come regularly I've jumped on.
Worked out it'll cost me around $28/month over 24 months on my $12/month LiveConnected plan.
      That's a bargain in anyone's language!

      • Just pulled the trigger and got one(picked up instore at hornsby westfield, no internet purchase either). I feel as though I've cheated on my sgs (typing this on it now). SGS development on XDA piggy backed on nexus, fingers crossed the G will do the same.
PS mine came with a free wireless display adapter too.

        • Sounds good - Can you put up your receipt so we can try the same? Thanks

  • this is insane value. better than a nexus 4 and cheaper. 4G, double the internal memory, higher clockspeed on the CPU, physical home/menu/back buttons so more screen real estate, microSD card slot and FM radio to boot.

    flash this ROM:
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2247095

and you'd even be hard pressed to notice any functionality differences between it and the nexus 4.

    • There's no microsd card slot on this. Would be glad to be proven wrong though.

  • Pretty good deal!

  • Tempted to buy this, but I'm currently the owner of an LG P880 4X HD. It is a piece of shit which is occasionally laggy and has a terrible battery life. The specs on my phone appear to be good (a 2150MAh battery) and it struggles to last a day just from sitting in my pocket. Does anyone know how well this phone performs? Because if it performs similarly to my current phone, I'd much rather fork out several hundred more dollars and invest in a GS4.

    • Ive been.browsing the net for the past hr at 50% brightness.and its used 8% of the battery, its very well worth the buy, ive got an s2 and it sh*ts all over it, its also 32gb which i didnt expect

  • I am about to order Nexus 4 (built by LG).
I was told Nexus 4 is very close to LG Optimus.

Obviously Nexus 4 is 3G and this LG is 4G.

Which one to get apart from the difference in network connection?

    • This has much better specs than the Nexus 4. This appears better on paper. The Nexus 4 however has a good reputation and I have not heard much about this phone.

      • The Nexus 4 is effectively a gimped version of the Optimus G.

    • They're effectively siblings, there's a lot of shared components.
LG also has 32Gb vs 16Gb
but the Nexus has much better official software support.

If you don't want to flash a Custom ROM, and can live with 16 (or 8)Gb, then go for the Nexus.
Otherwise, if you don't care about the software or are willing to flash a custom ROM, go for the Optimus.

      • this one is cheaper too

  • I was literally about to pull the trigger on a N4 for the missus but this seems a better deal!

Now to find a bounce/drop/bash proof case!

Do the N4 cases fit on this or do you need specific OptG cases?

EDIT: This is the 32GB model, right?

    • Too slow, it just ran out of stock :(

  • What's even better is two weeks ago this phone's bootloader was unlocked :)

    http://ausdroid.net/2013/04/13/telstras-lg-optimus-g-gets-ro…

You would be silly to consider the Nexus 4 with the Optimus G (4G) at this price.

    • Yes there will be roms for this, but whats's quality of the roms?

I got a HTC Velocity and a CDMA HTC One V. The Velocity is meant to have an official CM release, but its still in the beta phase with some problems. The HTC One V has quite a few roms available, but the most stable one seems to be a stripped down stock rom, with most others having camera issues.

Basically, yes there will be roms for you to flash, but if you want good quality roms thats fully tested, stick with the Nexus. But if you can live with some minor issues, then a flashed non-nexus phone might be for you.

  • Can we fit microsd in this?

    • Seems not. Only the model made for AT&T in the US had a MicroSD.

  • Don't bother.

No product is available. Deal expired on JB's website

  • Lucky i had it in my cart! ordered. now need to wait for pickup email!

  • Too bad the deal didn't last long but this was truly an exceptional bargain for a phone with great specs!

  • wtf I just clicked on it..cry..

  • +1

Personally not a big fan of LG phones i had one and the software support from them was horrible and all over the place.

  • +2

Thanks OP. Recently, I upgraded my wife's iphone to a nexus 4 and it was really nice. I now have bought this LG and will sell my iphone 4.

  • +1

Went to jb hornsby westfield and picked one up about half an hour ago, didnt bother with internet purchase… Happy days

  • reciept anyone?

  • Ok I called up a store and the guy told me I had to take out a casual plan with it, which was a $60 plan?! Has anyone heard anything about this? !

    • Yes. I called a whole bunch of stores in Melb and all of them said that you can only get this phone for $388 when you take out a "no lock in" contract for $60 p/m with Telstra.

I told them all about the sale on their website; a few of them were willing to sell it outright @ $388. A few won't budge.

I've put one on hold to pick up tonight, but it will be a unlocked telstra branded one. Every store I've contacted only has the Telstra branded phones in stock. Will be interesting to see if the web purchased phones are Telstra branded or not.

      • They will be.. Telstra had (and possibly still has) the exclusive in Australia.

      • Ironpaw, which Melb stores were willing to sell the phone without Telstra no lock plan?

        • +1

Springvale, that's where I picked one up tonight. They have a few left.
I believe Brighton was willing to as well - I called and when I asked "$388 no contract outright?" the salesgirl said yes

Chadstone claims to have no "outright stock"

Southland won't sell it without you buying the $60 plan.

    • As far as I'm aware this was supposed to be the deal all along. Not sure if it was miscommunication somewhere along the line as to why it was being sold outright at this price without the Telstra connection, but then again I'm not very aware.

      • Then someone screwed up offering it online for outright purchase? More win for Ozbargainers!

      • No mention of the $60 Telstra requirement when the deal was available online.

  • call one store, the guy said the term and condition was to buy a $60 non-fixed plan from Telstra for the first month. It will be an unlocked phone, though.

    • Confirmed its BS, just purchased the phone and it came with a wireless adapter that u hook up to the tv…very quick and nice phone, amazing…

  • Bought this just now at JB Elizabeth St Melbourne after earlier calling to reserve one after it sold out online. The guy told me it was a pricing error hence why it had been removed, but that they would honour the online price.

As mentioned, it comes WITH a Wireless Display Adapter for hooking it up wirelessly to your HDTV via Hdmi which is damn cool and a nice little bonus.

No mentions of a contract. I'm putting it straight onto Vaya 4G.

    http://tinypic.com/r/2zjhlix/5

    • Can you let me know if it works, im looking to order a 4g plan also thanks to this beauty!

    • +2

Receipt below, hope this helps somebody.

      http://tinypic.com/r/34t7bxf/5

It will work on Vaya 4G since Vaya is just Optus.

I signed up to Vaya in April when they were giving 20$ free credit on sign up, + 10% off for the life of your prepaid time with Vaya, so I'm paying $17.60 a month for 650$ calls, unlimited text, and 1.5GB 4G data (no contract!). If it turns out to be a good carrier, I think I've done well.

They do have a reputation for lax customer service, though, see their WP thread.

      • Have you tested the data connection with Vaya, it seems my one only works with Telstra 4G Data, when I inserted the vaya/optus sim, there's no data connection at all, voice works fine with vaya though. Also tried Voda 3G, no data either, only telstra has 4G data.

        • You'll need to change the APN's to Optus ones

  • +1

Just called up… $60 Telstra requirement

    • Is there a way to unlock it for free?

      • +3

The phones are not locked. Its just that some stores require you to purchase a Telstra no lock contract in order to receive the phone for $388.

Just point them to this thread…seems like a few stores are flexible in selling the phone at this price without the plan.

    • I can confirm with stylzjhn,

I just called up.. and the deal is $388 for the phone provided you sign up to a one-month no-lock contract with Telstra for $60. Overall bringint the costs for $448, which is only $28 more than a Google Nexus 4 but double the capacity & a higher clocked processor & a higher megapixel camera (quality is questionable).

This is probably the greatest bargain yet, I've been rocking my Nexus S for 2 years now lol.
