You normally get 30 free anyway don't you? Which I think they changed to 40 free as of May 1st.
For most people Ozbargain I don't imagine it would be a great offer. I'd rather keep the old 7.9% final value fee and get 30 free listings..

  • +8

Now that they charge 10% for final value fee, they can't get people to sell.

    • +2

is that final value fee inclusive of shipping cost?

      • They didn't include shipping cost before.. so I don't think it does include it unless they changed it.

      • Shipping isn't added to the final value fee. Some sellers pad the shipping to absorb fees.

    • WTF?

Are you serious, I know that PayPal used to take a cut of all sales, but is it ebay-wide now?

Edit: All I could find for reference to fees were for running ebay-stores, not for individuals.

      http://pages.ebay.com.au/help/sell/storefees.html

      • +2

Yes 9.9% final value fee, unless you sign up to their store packages.

        http://pages.ebay.com.au/help/sell/fees.html#final

Paypal only takes a cut if you receive payment through them, $0.30 + 2.4%.

Making the total fee for 99% of eBay sales $0.30 + 12.3%.

        • should be $0.30 + 12.4%

        • Wow. I often wondered where the extra fees from paypal were coming from.

I don't sell things on eBay much, but that really pisses me off that its so high a fee considering they don't actually hold the stock or provide any form of escrow like normal auction houses.

    • No mentioned that PayPal charge stands, add up to 12.4% + 30c, way to expensive and now I take it as last option to sell my gadget

  • +24

No bargain to be had whatsoever when they charge 10% final value fee.

    • +8

Exactly why this is a shenanigan and not a bargain.

    • and even less of a bargain when sellers start padding their postage and handling fees (beyond AusPost increases) to make up for it }:

  • I am having a declutter this weekend, so it is of use to me. Yes the sales fees are stupidly high. But at least if I don't sell them its into the garage sale pile.

I list using an ipad, so its not too bad to choose things that might have barcodes etc and chuck them on

    • Have you looked at Facebook for selling ? In my area they have local sites eg "Illawarra baby and children's goods". I have been having a declutter and found this really convenient . It's free and everything sold within an hour and people came to pick up within 2 days.

  • +3

already get 30 free listings, but I cannot stand the commissions they take. and then even more if they pay by paypal..

  • Gumtree ? What's the fees there ?

    • +4

      Gumtree is owned by ebay.

    • +6

Gumtree is owned by ebay. Its purpose is to block competitors from starting a free service that might grow to compete with ebay. So it needs to be good enough, but not too convenient.

      • +5

If you've noticed gumtree lacks any kind of moderation or policing, so scammers are everywhere and people often list things with the wrong titles to attract buyers.

Some things I've noted are fake job ads designed to harvest personal data. Once I called up to see what a job was about, was given a (fake) address and when I drove over it was nothing but a residential building. That was when I figured out that it was a bogus operation.

In any case, job seekers beware — always ring up and gather as much info as possible before sending in any personal docs.

        Gumtree ? What's the fees there ?

Gumtree actually has a lot of trap fees. E.g to edit an ad 12 hours after posting they need to you pay for a search upgrade to edit it. Why not just delete the ad and start again?
Bumping an ad costs money — something you could avoid by simply deleting and reposting an ad.

  • +4

If you're going to sell, just mark your items up by 10%. That's one approach I take.

It makes it harder when AusPost keep increasing postage fees and then to keep PayPal happy you have to offer Signature on Delivery. Sending a 500gm satchel with Signature on Delivery using Click and Send costs $11!

Selling locally using free classifieds websites is a better choice.

    • +8

A great little secret is Officeworks Parcel Delivery Service. It'll save you money, plus its courier delivery (Toll IPEC), the packaging is free, the signature on delivery is free plus there is full tracking and overnight delivery guaranteed all for $9!!!

      • Thanks! Definitely going to check this out.

      • i'm loving officeworks more and more :)

    • PayPal happy you have to offer Signature on Delivery

actually, you only need to have 'proof of lodgment' such as the tracking applied to 'click and send' postage..
Signature on delivery is not a condition of paypals buyer/seller protection

      • +1

PayPal are pretty sketchy though. I'd say in most cases the favour leans toward the buyer.

I just read that Signature on Delivery is required for items over $250.

Also, what happens when AusPost screw up and your parcel falls off the radar? I have one parcel that reached a delivery centre in SA, but there have been no updates since then. This was almost a month ago.

        • Australia Post can go to hell!!! I only send items via Officeworks now. Cheaper, better, faster & safer.

        • In australia, there is no condition that a signature is required..
          http://ebay.com.au/help/tp/paypal-seller-protection.html

        • I just read that Signature on Delivery is required for items over $250.

It's help if you read the AUSTRALIAN policies.

Also, what happens when AusPost screw up and your parcel falls off the radar? I have one parcel that reached a delivery centre in SA, but there have been no updates since then. This was almost a month ago

As far as Paypal is concerned, that is why you don't have to prove delivery… only that you posted.

As for the lost item - if it was valuable then you should have insured it. If it wasn't valuable, then it's not the end of the world.

        • Thanks, but there's no need to be a jerk about it.

I clarified myself about the SoD.

  • +6

10% now? Wow they are just getting greedy. I mean I am sure they were raking in the billions of dollars when it was 7%. Why the increase? Just to hurt the poor Chinese and grand parents who hardly make a dime when they sell something.

  • +2

Unless you have something of real value in high demand, it really isn't worth selling on eBay

    • But what's the alternative? I listed items on both ebay and gumtree and couldn't move them on gumtree. Sold on ebay and paid nearly 13% in total commisions. Is there another way?

      • I am wondering too. I am interested in an alternative that doesn't charge fees.

  • +7

Also keep in mind that this increased free listings promo means increased competition since there will be a much greater amount of items listed on eBay during the promo .. therefore it could mean the final sale price of auctions may be less.. So you may in fact end up worse off.

  • +3

10%? So if I sell something for $1000, I have to pay them $100? Ridiculous.

    • +4

      Plus PayPal fees.

      • How much are PayPal fees? Another 10%?

    • -1

      It's 9.9%, so yeah, $90 + [Paypal fee]

      • +3

        9.9% = $99

      • +3

        fail

    • +7

10%? So if I sell something for $1000, I have to pay them $100? Ridiculous.

Can you do my maths exam for me next week. You seem to be very good at it.

      • +8

Nah, not really. I had to use a calculator for that.

  • Just ridiculous - I about fell over when I got the fees for selling a couple of things on ebay - then you got paypal on top.
They WILL shoot themselves in the foot though - I never bother to look for bargains (from dealers) on ebay anymore unless its for something from China.. everything else is more than regular online stores!

  • +5

Try quicksales.com.au. Totally free, no listing fee and no final. We need to support another auction site for beating crazy ebay.

Yes, they are still not good enough. But support from more people will make them improve their software quicker and we really need another main competitor to destroy the monopoly of ebay.

    • Be interested to know if anyone makes sales on quicksales.com.au never used it myself but I'm curious.

      • i've only sold 1 item back in 2009. took a few months for it to sell (limited audience and all) but the buyer was great to work with.

it'd be great if more people used them, however i wouldn't want to see the deadbeats and time-wasters from ebay migrating over as well :\

  • +3

So, ebay: 10% + insertion fees + Paypal 5% + shipping ….. No wonder I find so many useful things like videocamera, digital camera, BBQs, Printers, TV's on the side of the road !

  • They are also saving on storage and bandwidth costs by limiting the number of transactions (by time and number) in your account. They deleted most of my emails. I got pissed with them as all those emails from past sellers and buyers were an easy search for what was said and who I got it from. I told them so and then they sent me a request to take the CS 'How Are We Doing'. Ha!

    • Gmail. Problem solved.

      • Gmail only works outside ebay?

        • +5

if your email listed on your ebay profile is gmail, then every mail coming into your ebay message will also go to your gmail.
then you can just archive those emails.

  • +1

Not a bargain. The increase number of free listings mean nothing when compared to the increases of seller fees!

Also eBay have destroyed Gumtree around the world too.*

*For those that don't know eBay own Gumtree

  • 9.9% plus PayPal monopoly fee?
Then pretending its all golly gosh super-positive???

Ebay can hum on my plums.

Pack of double-dipping scab bastards. I really wish Google would kick off their own version and take these pricks on. They are amongst the few that would have the reach.

Was looking at Craiglist when I realized they've started a site in Australia. This is one of their listings:
      http://sydney.craigslist.com.au/clo/3839778608.html

      • Hey yeah.
I always hear Americans going on about Craigslist, so hopefully it will take off here. Zero promotions have reached me so far.
It would take a large multinational with wide net presence in most countries to offer any kind of viable Ebay alternative. The rewards are HUGE if any company has the nads to pull it off.
There is probably a large Ebay resentment factor with nowhere to go.

        EDIT
Lol scrimshaw you are a sick man.

      • hmm… Panties…

Why is everyone freaking out about the fees? They changed ages ago

As for free listings… listing on ebay is free ANYWAY. SO this is just getting a few more free listings for a really really short period.

You'd be pushing it uphill with a stick to list 100 items in 7 days. This is a non deal (not the OP's fault)

    • yeah we know they changed "ages ago." it's just that we resent (not the same as "freaking out") ebay making it look like they're doing sellers such a sweet deal with these free listings while back-end screwing us if/once we sell an item.

    • It's not free to all. Ebay made me a powerseller which does nothing for me. I don't think sellers can see that for my profile. So the 30 free listings are applicable to non power sellers and new members can only list 10 items any given time unless they verify their paypal account iirc.

As for the change of fees they changed it this month. It sucks for sellers and buyers alike. Think of people selling cameras or pcs who jack up their prices due to this. And yes, an approximate 2.7% increase is noticeable. Bad enough paypal take a cut too.

    • The increase to 10% was only recent actually

  • The eBay fees are so high, but so are auction houses. 22%, which includes gst.

My ebay invoice for may is $107. And I had to file an unpaid item dispute, so the following month I'll be in credit $40~ with eBay…

I don't mind really. The items I sell are only to a particular audience, and selling on gumtree I would get far less $$. It all works out in the end.

  • Having a store on E-Bay is of little value .
You pay high fees for very expensive real estate , and no priority in the search.
The only metric they use is feed back points .
So if you are a new player on ebay with little or no feed back your store will never be found.
When you add all the other fees it becomes very expensive.
I think ebay has seen better days.
I didnt know that ebay owned gum tree.

  • cheap cash grab….the cost of running online anything is considerably lower especially when you divorce yourself from any legal responsability in the host countries like ebay does.

  • Ebay = Fee bay

  • Do Chinese ebay sellers also pay for this ridiculous 9.9%?

    • They sell to you, but "relist" the item. Don't know if it saves them the 10%. But what is 10% on $5?
